Zhongshan Chuangjian ABS FR-350 is a flame-retardant acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding grade supplied for electrical enclosures, switch boxes, power-distribution covers, appliance control housings, and similar thin-wall structural parts requiring defined ignition resistance. The alphanumeric designation FR-350 is supplier-specific and does not encode a standardized melt-flow index, tensile modulus, or UL 94 thickness; it identifies the compound family rather than a single measurable property. The product is normally supplied in natural and black pellet form, with the black variant commonly containing carbon black as a hiding pigment and weathering additive. Because publicly available data for the exact FR-350 configuration are limited, the operational values discussed in this document are drawn from commercial V-0 ABS systems of the same general class and must be checked against the current technical data sheet and lot-specific certificate of analysis before mould tryout or production release. The material is pre-dried in a dehumidifying or desiccant dryer at 80–90 °C for 2–4 h; residual moisture above 0.05% by mass is generally associated with surface splay, melt fracture, screw slip, and loss of flame-retardant uniformity. The compound is intended for reciprocating-screw injection moulding rather than profile extrusion or thermoforming unless specifically qualified by the supplier.
Flame-retardant ABS of the V-0 class is assessed under UL 94 or its harmonized form IEC 60695-11-10. In the vertical burn test, five specimens of defined thickness are conditioned at 23 ± 2 °C and 50 ± 10% relative humidity for 48 h before a 20 mm open flame is applied twice for 10 s. A V-0 classification requires the total afterflame time for ten flame applications to be not greater than 50 s, no individual afterflame to exceed 10 s, and no flaming drips to ignite the cotton indicator. For enclosure-grade ABS compounds, thicknesses of 1.6 mm and 3.0 mm are commonly cited on supplier documentation. Published data for FR-350 at sections below 1.0 mm are limited; UL performance in thin walls is sensitive to mould temperature, melt temperature, local pack pressure, and gate-induced orientation and must be re-tested on the production tool. Glow-wire and ball-pressure requirements for unattended appliances are often invoked under IEC 60695-2-11 and IEC 60695-10-2. A representative acceptance criterion for enclosures in proximity to live parts is a glow-wire flammability index of 850 °C or ignition temperature above 775 °C; FR-350 lot-specific values should be obtained from the supplier for the exact colour, thickness, and moulding parameters used in production.
Melt preparation for the FR-350 class requires a single-stage reciprocating screw with a length-to-diameter ratio of 18:1 to 24:1 and a compression ratio between 2.0:1 and 3.0:1. Barrel profiles should be staged at 190–210 °C in the feed zone, 210–230 °C in the compression zone, and 220–240 °C at the nozzle. Melt temperature measured by an insertion pyrometer should be maintained at or below 240 °C; operation above 250 °C or extended residence above 8 min can degrade halogenated flame-retardant additives, producing brown streaking, plate-out on the screw root and non-return valve, and variable UL 94 performance. Screw speed in the range 30–60 min⁻¹ and hydraulic back pressure of 0.3–0.7 MPa are typical starting values for uniform additive dispersion. Higher shear should be avoided if the grade contains an antimony trioxide synergist, because local melt temperatures at the screw surface can exceed the bulk temperature by 15–30 °C. Injection speed is set to produce a stable pressure integral without jetting or uncontrolled shear heating. Packing pressure is typically 50–70% of peak injection pressure, and pack time should cover gate freeze; amorphous ABS of this class has no semi-crystalline shrinkage discontinuity, so sink and warp are controlled primarily by uniform cooling and gradual wall-thickness transitions. A mould temperature of 40–80 °C is generally compatible with enclosure-grade ABS, with the lower segment used for thin-wall parts and the higher segment for high-gloss surfaces. Vented barrels are not recommended unless the supplier confirms that the flame-retardant package has low volatility at processing temperature.
Mould design for FR-350 must account for the lower impact strength and higher density of flame-retardant ABS relative to unfilled ABS. Gate positions should be placed away from impact-loaded bosses, snap-fit roots, and weld-line-sensitive sections. Rib thickness should not exceed 60% of the adjacent wall unless gas-assisted or sequential-valve processing is used; abrupt variations in wall section near gates can produce differential shrinkage and post-mould bowing. Ejector area should be increased because flame-retardant ABS at demoulding temperature has lower hot stiffness than the unfilled resin. Mould shrinkage measured according to ISO 294-4 in the flow and transverse directions is typically between 0.4% and 0.6% for V-0 ABS, with the lower values associated with higher flame-retardant loading and higher injection pressure. Tool cooling circuits should maintain a cavity-surface temperature variation of less than 5 °C to avoid asymmetric shrinkage. Hot-runner systems may be used if the manifold and nozzle are capable of holding melt temperature within the stable range and no dead spots allow material stagnation. With valve-gate systems, gate blush can be reduced by controlled needle-open speed and a short decompression after screw recovery.
Enclosed power strips, battery charging bases, and circuit-breaker housings create accumulations of heat and low-molecular-weight degradation products inside the enclosure. Under these conditions, the thermal stability of the flame-retardant system, the tendency for surface blooming, and the compatibility of the compound with metal contacts and wiring become decision parameters. If the FR-350 formulation follows the common halogenated V-0 ABS route, continuous-use temperature is typically limited to 60–70 °C; above this range, dimensional stability, impact retention, and flame-retardant performance may deteriorate over service lifetime. A halogen-free formulation, if applicable, would require a separate decomposition-path and extraction analysis. Contacts of silver-plated copper or brass should be evaluated for tarnishing in the presence of sulfur-containing or halogenated volatiles; field data from comparable ABS systems indicate that poorly dried FR compounds and high regrind fractions increase deposit formation on mould faces and contact points. This product class should not be combined with polyamide-based regrind, amine-containing antistatic masterbatches, or acid-scavenging additives without explicit supplier approval, because acid-base interactions with the flame-retardant package may reduce UL 94 performance and produce surface exudation. Regrind addition should be limited to 20% by mass unless retained UL 94 certification at the production thickness is demonstrated; each additional pass through the screw increases thermal history and shifts the molecular mass distribution toward lower viscosity.
Thermal degradation of flame-retardant ABS can be characterized by thermogravimetric analysis under nitrogen and air. Commercial V-0 ABS compounds of this class typically show an onset degradation temperature near 350–380 °C in nitrogen; the actual value for FR-350 depends on the bromine carrier, antimony trioxide loading, rubber content, and stabilizer package. A significant mass loss before 250 °C may indicate moisture, low-molecular-weight additives, or degraded regrind and predicts mould deposit formation. On the production floor, melt viscosity drift is commonly monitored through screw torque and cushion stability. A torque reduction of more than 10% at constant screw speed and melt temperature often indicates chain scission or additive degradation. Lot-to-lot variation in the flame-retardant package is controlled by the supplier through antimony and bromine content; incoming-quality checks using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy calibrated to the grade provide a useful lot-acceptance screen, although wet chemical analysis remains the referee method for regulatory reporting.
Property differentiation against general-purpose ABS, PC/ABS, and lower-flow V-0 ABS is relevant for material substitution studies. The table below summarizes class-level reference values. The FR-350 column should not be treated as a supplier guarantee; it identifies the likely positioning of the grade determined from product literature and may be updated with certificate-of-analysis data before tool commissioning.

In comparison with lower-flow V-0 ABS grades, FR-350 is positioned for thin-wall enclosures and multi-cavity tools where high melt length-to-thickness ratios require low viscosity. The trade-off is usually found in notched impact strength and weld-line integrity. Weld-line tensile strength under ISO 527-2 is commonly 60–75% of the unwelded value in flame-retardant ABS. For FR-350, weld-line performance should be measured on the production gate layout because the flame-retardant package can reduce melt-front interdiffusion. Compared with PC/ABS, FR-350 generally offers lower heat deflection temperature, lower impact strength, and lower raw-material cost, but also lower processing temperature and lower melt viscosity. Compared with halogen-free flame-retardant ABS, a halogenated FR-350 variant may provide a more established V-0 performance window at similar thickness, although the halogen-free systems may be specified where low smoke, low toxicity, or low corrosive gas release is a mandatory design constraint.
The compliance position of FR-350 for the European electrical and electronic equipment market should be documented through a supplier statement referencing the following test and directive benchmarks. Because compounds may be modified by colour masterbatch, regrind, and processing aids, the final article manufacturer remains responsible for verifying that each homogeneous material meets the applicable concentration limits.

Operational boundaries for FR-350 include a restriction on polar solvent contact. Ketones, esters, and chlorinated hydrocarbons can attack the ABS matrix and extract flame-retardant additives; cleaning hot mould surfaces with acetone or methyl ethyl ketone should be avoided because residual film can leave blush on the next shot. The grade should not be exposed to high-energy ionizing radiation, repeated steam sterilization, or long-term outdoor UV unless a UV-stabilized black or customized light-stable formulation is specified. Storage in unopened bags at 20–30 °C and below 60% relative humidity is recommended; opened material should be re-dried if ambient exposure exceeds 4 h. Material transferred by hot-air conveyors should be protected from condensation in the hopper. The exact drying, processing, and regrind conditions should be replaced with the current supplier technical data sheet and application-specific validation once the production tool is available.
