    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Zhongshan Chuangjian ABS FR-300 is a brominated flame-retardant acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection moulding grade supplied in pellet form. Manufacturer-cited representative values include a melt volume-flow rate of 22 cm³/10 min at 220 °C under a 10 kg load according to ISO 1133-1:2022, a density of 1.18 g/cm³ according to ISO 1183-1:2019, and a tensile yield stress of 41 MPa under ASTM D638-14. The flame-retardant package is based on brominated aromatic species with antimony trioxide synergist; this system gives UL 94 V-0 classification at 1.5 mm thickness in natural and black colour, with lot-to-lot variation controlled by certificate of analysis. These values are not specification minima; they are typical lot averages and must be confirmed on the final part before regulatory submission.

The property set used for initial material selection is summarised below. It is not a substitute for the supplier’s specification sheet or UL yellow card.

Drying is mandatory before melt processing. The pellets should be exposed to a desiccant-dryer air stream at 80 °C for 3–4 h, with an inlet dew point no higher than −30 °C, to achieve residual moisture below 0.02 %. Drying above 90 °C can cause pellet bridging in the hopper and should be avoided. At the nozzle, the melt temperature should be maintained between 200 °C and 230 °C; the recommended upper limit is 250 °C. Mould-temperature-control units should hold the cavity surface between 40 °C and 60 °C. Back pressure of 0.5–1.0 MPa hydraulic is generally sufficient for melt homogeneity. Injection velocity should be profiled so that the melt front advances at 250–350 mm/s in walls above 1.5 mm; in walls below 1.0 mm, higher velocities may be needed, but the resulting shear heating must be checked with a needle pyrometer after a short purge. Screw rotation should be 60–90 min⁻¹ for a 50 mm general-purpose screw of 20:1 to 24:1 L/D and compression ratio 2.5:1. If a barrier screw is used, melt-temperature monitoring is required because high-shear zones can degrade the brominated package. Total barrel residence time should remain below 300 s when the melt temperature is at 230 °C or above. At shutdown, the barrel should be purged with low-viscosity polystyrene or ABS purge compound, and heating zones should be reduced to 150 °C before shut-off to reduce carbon formation in the flame-retardant package. Vent vacuum in a vented barrel should be −0.08 MPa to prevent moisture re-uptake; however, the grade is not designed for vented-barrel compounding in the moulding machine. In production-scale lots, hopper residence should not exceed 4 h if ambient relative humidity is above 60 %, because conditioned pellets can regain surface moisture and produce splay in flat panels. A closed-loop material-handling system with dry-air conveying is recommended.

Why Does UL 94 V-0 Retention at 1.5 mm Depend More on Regrind Ratio Than on Barrel Set-Point?

The reason is that the active flame-retardant species are partially consumed or redistributed during first melt processing. Brominated flame retardants with antimony trioxide act largely by releasing halogen species that interrupt gas-phase radical reactions; however, the additive package can migrate to the part surface and can be depleted from the skin layer after repeated heat histories. In injection moulding trials on a 1200 kN clamping force machine with a 280 g shot weight and an open-nozzle hot-runner manifold at 225 °C, a virgin-material batch produced afterflame times of 2–4 s on all five 1.5 mm bars. A 20 wt% regrind blend continued to meet V-0, but afterflame times shifted to 3–6 s. At 35 wt% regrind, one far-end bar exceeded 10 s afterflame in two consecutive runs, failing V-0. The barrel set-point in the same study was varied between 200 °C and 230 °C; the regrind effect remained larger than the set-point effect. The practical limit is therefore 20 wt% regrind unless the specific part and runner scrap are re-qualified under IEC 60695-11-10. Gravimetric blending of regrind with virgin pellets should maintain accuracy within ±0.5 %. Regrind must be dried to the same moisture specification as virgin material. In multi-cavity tools, flame-bar specimens should be collected from the gate end and the far end because selective segregation of the flame-retardant system can produce different results across the cavity.

Component applications include electrical junction boxes, low-voltage switchgear housings, power-distribution blocks, appliance control panels, and power-tool housings. Compliance in unattended appliance enclosures requires more than UL 94 V-0; the relevant glow-wire tests are IEC 60695-2-12 for GWFI and IEC 60695-2-13 for GWIT. Supplier documentation for FR-300 lists a GWFI of 850 °C at 2.0 mm and a GWIT of 775 °C at 2.0 mm, but these values are colour- and thickness-dependent and must be re-verified on the final moulded part. For printed circuit board enclosures, comparative tracking index should be determined under IEC 60112; brominated ABS grades commonly fall between 250 V and 399 V, but FR-300-specific certification on the UL yellow card must be used for design. Materials selection for load-bearing live parts also requires accordance with IEC 60695-10-2 ball-pressure test. If the part is used above 75 °C service temperature, the ball-pressure indentation diameter should be recorded and compared with the value specified by the end-product standard. The product is normally supplied with a regulatory declaration for RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU including Delegated Directive (EU) 2015/863, and for REACH Regulation EC 1907/2006. Restricted PBDE and PBB flame retardants should be below 1000 ppm per homogeneous material. The relevant analytical methods are IEC 62321 series for RoHS substances and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for specific brominated compounds. A certificate of compliance is required for each production lot.

When a Multi-Cavity Tool Has Flow Paths Below 1.2 mm Wall Thickness

Long flow paths in thin sections reduce the moulding window. At 1.0 mm wall, the melt may cool below the no-flow temperature before the brominated flame-retardant package is uniformly distributed. The result can be a visible flow-mark boundary near the end of fill and localised loss of flame retardancy. A practical spiral-flow length for FR-300 at 220 °C melt temperature and 50 °C mould temperature is approximately 440 mm at 2.0 mm wall and 180 mm at 1.0 mm wall under injection pressure limited to 120 MPa. These values are design-starting points for mould-fill simulation, not universal specifications. If the part has a wall thickness below 1.2 mm, V-0 classification at 1.5 mm does not automatically extend to the thinner wall; the specific cavity should be tested under UL 94 or IEC 60695-11-10 at the nominal thickness. High-speed injection without a profiled velocity ramp can cause jetting in thick-to-thin transitions, especially at the gate. The resulting jetting strand may increase surface area available for flame propagation. When hot-runner valve gates are used, the valve pin should close at 0.2–0.5 s after hold-pressure switchover to minimise gate-stringing and degradation of the flame retardant. Moulds with beryllium-copper inserts should be replaced or hard-chromed because acidic byproducts may corrode unprotected copper alloys during extended runs. For ejection, mould release pressure is higher than with standard ABS because the grade can plate out low-molecular-weight species on cavity walls. Ejector pins should be nitrided or coated, and draft angles should be at least 0.5° greater than standard ABS tooling.

When compared with general-purpose ABS, FR-300 has a density penalty of about 0.14 g/cm³ and a significant reduction in notched impact strength. Standard ABS at 1.04 g/cm³ and 300–350 J/m notched Izod can be replaced by FR-300 at 1.18 g/cm³ and 170 J/m under ASTM D256. The tensile yield stress is also 6–9 MPa lower. Against halogen-free flame-retardant ABS or PC/ABS, FR-300 processes at a lower melt temperature and usually has a wider processing window, but its heat deflection temperature is lower than many halogen-free PC/ABS grades and it can form acidic decomposition species above 250 °C. The material is not intended for blending with polyamide, polyoxymethylene, or other acid-sensitive polymers. Hot-runner components made from unprotected copper alloy or aluminium should not be used; stainless steel or chrome-plated parts are preferred. The product has limited published weathering data for UV-exposed outdoor enclosures; a UL 746C f1 rating should be confirmed on the final colour and texture. For parts with weld lines, impact and tensile strength at the weld line may be reduced by 30–50 % relative to the base material; this should be evaluated with ASTM D638 or ASTM D256 specimens cut from the production tool. Published data for FR-300 after five regrind cycles, in walls below 1.0 mm, or after prolonged hot-humidity conditioning above 85 % RH are limited; end-use qualification on the intended cavity geometry is required.
