Application of Yuyao Weier ABS 305AB

Does ABS 305AB Retain Notched Izod Above 20 kJ/m² in Low-Gloss Instrument Panel Carriers?

The moulding specification for Yuyao Weier ABS 305AB in instrument panel carriers is governed by the ISO 2580-1:2019 designatory system, in which the grade is classified by melt volume-flow rate, Vicat softening temperature, and notched impact strength. For a low-gloss interior trim substrate, the resin is processed at 100 wt% of the compound base and combined with a carbon-black or colour masterbatch at 0.5–2.0 wt% and, where ejection forces exceed 50 kN, a zinc stearate release agent at 0.1–0.3 wt%. The material is pre-dried in a desiccant hopper at 80 °C for 3–4 h to a residual moisture below 0.05%, measured by Karl Fischer titration. On production-scale toggle presses with clamp force between 1,200 kN and 2,500 kN, the melt temperature window is 220–250 °C; shot-to-shot mass variation remains below 0.3% when a 25–40 mm reciprocating screw is used and the screw recovery position is held within ±2 mm. Vicat softening temperature measured per ISO 306:2022 B50 is typically 96–102 °C, and notched Izod impact per ISO 180:2019 at 23 °C remains above 20 kJ/m²; a fall below 18 kJ/m² after drying or processing indicates moisture-induced hydrolysis or butadiene-phase degradation.

Compliance for automotive interior applications references FMVSS 302 for horizontal burn rate, ISO 3795:1989 for flammability of interior materials, and REACH 1907/2006 Annex XVII restrictions on restricted phthalates and PAH. The injection moulding process uses a mould temperature of 45–70 °C, an injection pressure of 70–100 MPa, and a holding pressure maintained at 60–80% of injection peak for 6–10 s. Gate freeze time is derived from part wall thickness; for a 2.5 mm nominal wall, gate freeze is observed at 2.8–3.2 s. Terminal parts include instrument cluster housings, glove box assemblies, driver knee bolster covers, speaker grilles, and door panel trim strips. The limiting processing boundary is the butadiene phase thermal stability: melt temperatures above 260 °C or residence times beyond 5 min produce surface streaking and reduce notched Izod by more than 15%.

When ABS 305AB is co-fed with bisphenol-A polycarbonate for thin-wall business equipment housings, the compounding objective is a two-phase acrylic-styrene-acrylonitrile dispersion that retains a notched Izod transition at the 30 wt% ABS threshold. In this configuration, ABS 305AB is added at 28–35 wt%, polycarbonate at 60–67 wt%, a core-shell MBS impact modifier at 3–6 wt%, a phosphite/antioxidant package at 0.2–0.5 wt%, and a pentaerythritol tetrastearate lubricant at 0.2–0.4 wt%. Published data for ABS 305AB in this specific PC/ABS configuration is limited; the ratio is derived from grade-specific melt-flow testing under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 260 °C and 5 kg, with validation on the target twin-screw line required.

The compounding route uses a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 36–44 and a 65 mm screw diameter. Polycarbonate is main-fed at zone 1, while ABS 305AB is side-fed at zone 5 after the polymer has reached 240–250 °C, minimising the residence time of the butadiene phase. Barrel settings are 240–270 °C, vacuum degassing is maintained at -0.08 to -0.095 MPa, and screw speed is set to 300–450 rpm. Failure modes observed on production lines include black specking from degraded ABS at the side-feeder throat when the melt seal is lost, and housing delamination when ABS content exceeds 40 wt%. Downstream injection moulding of the PC/ABS pellet uses a melt temperature of 250–280 °C, a mould temperature of 70–90 °C, and a back pressure of 3–6 MPa. Terminal parts are notebook bottom covers, monitor rear housings, telecommunication rack bezels, and printer chassis panels.

Compliance is assessed using ISO 180:2019 notched Izod at 23 °C and -30 °C, ASTM D638-22 tensile properties, ISO 306:2022 Vicat, and UL 94 HB or V-1 at the specified wall thickness. The operational boundary for ABS 305AB in this alloy is the upper barrel limit of 275 °C; above this, butadiene decomposition introduces volatile compounds that increase die plate deposits and reduce weld-line strength by up to 20%.

    Flame-Retarded ABS 305AB Compounds and UL 94 V-0 Retention at 1.5 mm

In a flame-retarded enclosure compound, the brominated epoxy synergist package is limited by the debromination onset temperature and the need to keep injection moulding melt temperature below 215 °C. Using ABS 305AB as the base resin at 100 phr, the formulation comprises a brominated epoxy oligomer at 22–28 phr, antimony trioxide at 6–10 phr, chlorinated polyethylene flexibiliser at 6–10 phr, a calcium-zinc thermal stabiliser at 0.5–1.5 phr, and an internal lubricant at 0.5–1.0 phr. The compound is dry-blended in a high-speed mixer at 1,000–1,500 rpm for 8–12 min, with the antimony trioxide pre-milled to a median particle size below 1.0 μm to avoid screw wear and settle-out in the hopper.

Extrusion runs on a co-rotating twin-screw line with L/D 40 and 52 mm screw diameter use a barrel profile from 160 °C in zone 1 to 195 °C in zones 5–7, with side-fed brominated epoxy at zone 6 to prevent pre-shear degradation. Melt temperature measured at the die is held at 198–210 °C. Vacuum degassing at -0.08 MPa removes residual styrene monomer. Injection moulding of junction box blanks uses a melt temperature of 200–215 °C, a mould temperature of 40–65 °C, and an injection speed of 30–60 mm/s. In production-scale troubleshooting, a short shot or charring at the check ring is observed when the compound contains less than 6 phr antimony trioxide, and a drop below V-0 at 1.5 mm occurs when the barrel residence time exceeds 8 min.

Compliance is evaluated against UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm, IEC 60695-2-11:2021 glow-wire at 850 °C, ISO 1133-1:2022 melt flow, ASTM D648 heat deflection temperature, and RoHS 2011/65/EU for restricted brominated additives. REACH 1907/2006 SVHC screening is required for imported antimony trioxide and chlorinated polyethylene. Terminal finished products include miniature circuit breaker distributor boxes, switchgear housing shells, wall-mounted junction boxes, and terminal block enclosures.

When ABS 305AB is run through a roll-stack sheet line, the critical operating limit is the sheet surface temperature at the nip: below 80 °C roll temperature the sheet releases with visible chill marks, and above 95 °C the sheet can adhere to the polishing rolls and block at wind-up. The extrusion formulation uses ABS 305AB at 100 phr with a white or colour masterbatch at 2–5 phr; if surface roughness exceeds 1.2 μm Ra at the first polishing roll, a high-molecular-weight acrylic processing aid is added at 0.5–1.0 phr. Pre-drying is carried out at 80 °C for 3–4 h. A single-screw extruder with a barrier screw and L/D between 30 and 34 is used, with barrel temperatures from 180 °C at the feed to 220 °C at the die. The die width is set for 1.5–6.0 mm sheet thickness and the roll stack is maintained at 70–95 °C.

Thermoforming of the extruded ABS sheet takes place at a sheet surface temperature of 140–170 °C. Below 140 °C, stress whitening occurs at plug-assisted corners; above 170 °C, sagging and wall-thickness variation increase beyond ±0.15 mm. The process can be run on a shuttle or rotary thermoformer with a clamp force of 150–250 kN and vacuum pressure of -0.08 MPa. Compliance references ISO 2580-1:2019 for designation, ISO 179-1:2020 Charpy impact, and RoHS 2011/65/EU for electrical accessory applications. Terminal parts include thermoformed luggage shells, equipment housing covers, appliance inner door panels, and ABS sheet blanks for low-volume automotive interior trim.

If DWV Fittings Require Hydrostatic Burst Strength Above 2.5 MPa at 60 °C

For DWV fittings produced by injection moulding, the critical quality parameters are melt fill at the hollow-core pin, notch sensitivity at the branch intersection, and resistance to installation stress cracking. ABS 305AB is processed at 100 wt% as the sole resin base; an external lubricant at 0.1–0.3 wt% is permitted if ejection force exceeds the press clamp force control threshold, but higher levels reduce weld-line strength at the thread root. The material is dried at 80 °C for 3–4 h to a moisture content below 0.05%, then injection moulded at 210–230 °C melt temperature and 45–60 °C mould temperature. Holding pressure is set at 60–80 MPa with a holding time of 1.0–1.5 s per mm of maximum wall thickness.

Compliance for drainage and sewer applications is anchored to ASTM D2661 for ABS DWV pipe fittings, ISO 15493:2003/Amd.1:2016 for plastics piping systems, and NSF/ANSI 14 for potable water and drainage certification where required. Short-term hydrostatic burst testing per ASTM D1599 can be specified; the acceptance criterion is above 2.5 MPa at 60 °C. Production-scale moulding on toggle presses with clamp force 1,500–2,800 kN shows that gate blush at the fitting hub is minimised when the injection speed profile is staged: 40 mm/s through the gate, then 25 mm/s at the core, then 15 mm/s during the post-fill phase. Terminal products are couplings, tees, elbows, p-traps, floor drain bodies, and pipe outlet adapters.

Single-screw filament extrusion of ABS 305AB granulate has a narrower processing window than injection moulding because the cooling and diameter control system converts the melt into a semi-solid strand under controlled tension. The extrusion formulation uses ABS 305AB at 100 phr, a styrenic melt-strength modifier at 2–5 phr, a pigment masterbatch at 2–4 phr, and an internal lubricant at 0.5–1.5 phr. The granulate is pre-dried in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 4–6 h. A single-screw extruder with L/D 25–30 and a 30 mm general-purpose screw is operated with barrel temperatures from 185 °C at feed to 210 °C at the die. Melt pressure before the breaker plate is maintained at 8–12 MPa; die swell is measured at 1.15–1.25 and stabilised by drawing the strand at a ratio of 1.6–1.8.

The strand passes through a 50–60 °C water bath, then a 30–40 °C air-knife drying section, and a two-axis laser gauging system that controls diameter at 1.75 mm ±0.05 mm or 2.85 mm ±0.05 mm. Spooling tension is kept at 2–4 N; higher tension induces cold drawing and inconsistent break torque during FDM feeding. Compliance for export is assessed against RoHS 2011/65/EU, REACH 1907/2006 Annex XVII, and ASTM D638-22 for the printed tensile specimen. The terminal product is fused deposition modeling filament used for dimensionally stable prototype enclosures, mechanical jigs, and low-volume production fixtures. Failure modes on production-scale filament lines include ovality above 0.02 mm caused by improper roller alignment and interlayer delamination on printing when residual moisture exceeds 0.06%.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Yuyao Weier ABS 305AB is designated as an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer resin intended primarily for injection-molding conversion. The grade label separates it from other ABS products in the producer’s portfolio through numeric and alphabetic suffixes that typically correspond to flow classification, additive package, or end-use suitability. Published datasheet values specific to Yuyao Weier ABS 305AB are limited in publicly accessible sources; the processing conditions and property ranges cited in this technical note therefore reflect established industrial experience with unfilled general-purpose ABS injection-molding compounds and must be confirmed against the producer’s certificate of analysis for lot-specific values. The material is supplied as pelletized feedstock compatible with gravimetric and volumetric dosing, and its baseline density is expected to fall within the general unfilled ABS range of 1.04–1.07 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1. The terpolymer structure combines styrene for rigidity and gloss, acrylonitrile for chemical resistance and thermal stability, and butadiene rubber particles for impact resistance, but the exact phase ratio and rubber morphology for this grade are not published and should not be assumed from general ABS data.

For incoming quality control, melt-volume flow rate should be measured under ISO 1133-1:2022 or ASTM D1238 at 220 °C/10 kg. Typical injection-molding ABS grades fall between 10 cm³/10 min and 30 cm³/10 min, with higher-flow variants used for thin-wall parts and lower-flow variants selected for increased impact retention. If Yuyao Weier ABS 305AB is positioned as a higher-flow grade, processing pressure and melt temperature should be reduced relative to durable low-flow ABS, but notched impact strength may also decline because high-flow ABS generally contains a less load-bearing rubber phase. Batch-to-batch viscosity variation should be monitored because a ±10 % shift in melt-flow rate can alter fill pressure, gate seal time, and molded-part weight in multi-cavity tools.

What drying and injection-molding limits govern Yuyao Weier ABS 305AB processing?

Moisture control is the first critical processing boundary. Unfilled ABS absorbs atmospheric moisture; at 23 °C and 50 % RH, equilibrium moisture uptake for general-purpose ABS is typically 0.2–0.5 wt%. Injection molding with residual moisture above 0.1 wt% can generate silver streaks, splay, and surface delamination. Desiccant drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h is the standard starting condition, with longer drying required when storage humidity exceeds 60 % RH. Dryer dew point should be maintained at or below -20 °C, and hopper residence time at elevated temperature should not exceed 4 h to avoid thermal yellowing. A closed-loop desiccant dryer with insulated hopper is preferred over ambient-air tray drying because ABS can regain surface moisture rapidly in humid production areas.

Barrel temperature settings for unfilled ABS injection grades are commonly profiled from 190 °C in the rear zone to 230 °C in the front zone, with nozzle temperature between 210 °C and 250 °C. Direct melt-temperature verification with a pyrometer is more reliable than set-point readings because shear heating can raise actual melt temperature by 10–20 °C above controller values. Mold temperature should be controlled between 25 °C and 60 °C for dimensional control; textured surfaces and high-gloss applications may require 60–80 °C to improve replication and reduce flow marks. Back pressure should be limited to 0.3–0.7 MPa to avoid excessive shear and butadiene-phase degradation. Screw speed for medium-diameter reciprocating screws is generally 40–80 min⁻¹, and a general-purpose screw with compression ratio 2.0–2.5:1 and L/D 20:1 is adequate for unfilled ABS.

Injection pressure for unfilled ABS typically ranges from 70–140 MPa, with packing pressure held at 50–70 % of peak injection pressure until gate freeze. Cooling time scales with wall thickness and should be established by in-tool thermocouple trials; for unfilled ABS with thermal diffusivity near 0.08 mm²/s, a 2.0 mm wall may require roughly 6–10 s cooling at 60 °C mold temperature, while a 3.0 mm wall may extend cooling to 15–25 s. Barrel residence time at upper melt temperature should not exceed 5 min, and prolonged hold or hot-runner standby above 240 °C can cause yellowing, gloss loss, and release of butadiene degradation products. Hot-runner manifold temperatures should be kept between 220 °C and 240 °C, and gate-tip temperatures should not exceed 260 °C for short cycles.

Material handling incompatibilities include melt contact with residual polyvinyl chloride, acetal, or polycarbonate in barrels, hot runners, or purging compounds. Residual PVC decomposes and releases hydrogen chloride, causing screw and mold corrosion and surface defects. Acetal decomposition can generate formaldehyde and acidic species. Polycarbonate residue can raise processing temperature and phase-separate from ABS, producing delamination and weld-line weakness. Before switching from these resins to Yuyao Weier ABS 305AB, a dedicated purging compound or polypropylene purge should be used, and the screw assembly should be inspected for stagnant zones.

For mold design, gate location and weld-line placement must be evaluated because knit lines in unreinforced ABS can reduce local strength by 20–40 % compared with unfilled parent material. Uniform wall thickness should be maintained where possible, with transitions no steeper than 3:1 to reduce gas traps and packing variation. Mold shrinkage for unfilled general-purpose ABS is typically 0.4–0.7 % under ISO 294-4, but anisotropic shrinkage between flow and transverse directions can differ by 0.1–0.2 percentage points depending on gate location, part thickness, and packing efficiency. Prototype cavity-pressure monitoring during short-shot studies is recommended before transfer to production. Published data specific to Yuyao Weier ABS 305AB in this configuration is limited; therefore, machine settings should be validated on the intended production tool rather than copied from other ABS grades without adjustment.

Thermomechanical property boundaries and standard test mapping

Mechanical and thermal acceptance criteria for Yuyao Weier ABS 305AB should be expressed in terms of standardized test methods so that supplier values and incoming-laboratory results are directly comparable. The relevant standards include ISO 527-2 or ASTM D638 for tensile properties, ISO 178 or ASTM D790 for flexural modulus, ISO 180/A or ASTM D256 for notched Izod impact, ISO 75-2 or ASTM D648 for heat deflection temperature, ISO 306 or ASTM D1525 for Vicat softening temperature, ISO 1183-1 or ASTM D792 for density, and ISO 294-4 or ASTM D955 for mold shrinkage. Because the producer’s public datasheet is not currently available, the values in the following table are representative ranges for unfilled general-purpose ABS injection-molding compounds, not guaranteed specifications for 305AB.

Property Test method Representative range for unfilled injection ABS
    Density ISO 1183-1 1.04–1.07 g/cm³
    Melt-volume flow rate ISO 1133-1, 220 °C/10 kg 10–30 cm³/10 min
Tensile yield stress ISO 527-2 35–48 MPa
Tensile elongation at break ISO 527-2 10–30 %
Flexural modulus ISO 178 1,800–2,500 MPa
    Notched Izod impact ISO 180/A, 23 °C 12–30 kJ/m², grade-dependent
    Heat deflection temperature ISO 75-2, 1.8 MPa 80–100 °C
    Vicat softening temperature ISO 306, VST/B50 90–105 °C
    Mold shrinkage ISO 294-4 0.4–0.7 %

High-flow ABS grades tend to occupy the lower end of the notched Izod range and the higher end of the melt-flow range, while durable low-flow grades show the reverse. If 305AB is intended for thin-wall enclosures, the lower impact boundary should be considered when designing ribbed sections, snap-fit arms, and bosses under mechanical load. Unfilled ABS generally retains serviceability for non-load-bearing parts up to 70 °C; above this, creep and thermal aging data should be obtained because the heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa does not define a safe continuous-use limit. Chemical resistance for general-purpose ABS is acceptable in dilute aqueous acids, alkalis, and many household cleaners, but molded-in stress combined with exposure to ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, or concentrated acetic acid can produce environmental stress cracking. These limitations apply to unfilled ABS as a class and are not unique to 305AB, but they must be verified for the specific grade and application.

Electrical and ignition-related claims should not be assumed from mechanical data alone. General-purpose unfilled ABS is commonly classified as HB under UL 94 and may pass horizontal burn requirements but is not a flame-retardant system. If an enclosure standard requires V-0 at 1.5 mm or 3.0 mm, a flame-retardant ABS or a different resin such as PC/ABS should be selected unless the producer confirms otherwise. Glow-wire testing under IEC 60695-2-11 and ball-pressure testing under IEC 60695-10-2 are relevant for unattended appliance enclosures; unfilled ABS may pass ball-pressure at 75 °C or 100 °C, but the final classification depends on wall thickness, color package, and regrind content. Food-contact status is not automatic for all ABS grades; compliance with FDA 21 CFR 177.1020, EU 10/2011, and any migration limits must be confirmed with the producer for 305AB rather than inferred from general-purpose ABS.

When 305AB replaces general-purpose ABS, FR-ABS, or PC/ABS in existing tools

Substitution of Yuyao Weier ABS 305AB into an existing mold must be evaluated through comparative melt rheology, shrinkage, and mechanical performance. A direct drop-in replacement is not guaranteed by monomer composition alone. If the candidate grade is a higher-flow ABS, it may reduce fill pressure and improve thin-wall flow length relative to a durable low-flow ABS, but it may also lower notched impact strength and increase sink marks if packing pressure is not adjusted. Conversely, if 305AB is a standard-flow grade, it may require higher injection pressure or thinner wall sections than a true high-flow grade. The practical differences are most visible in cavity-capability studies using pressure sensors and short-shot progression analysis, not in single-point melt-flow comparisons.

Resin class Typical processing boundary Mechanical/thermal boundary Compatibility notes for mold transfer
    General-purpose ABS 210–250 °C, mold 25–60 °C Notched Izod 12–30 kJ/m², HDT 80–100 °C Reference baseline for shrinkage and impact
High-flow ABS 200–240 °C, lower injection pressure Lower impact, similar HDT, higher MVR Better thin-wall fill; monitor sink marks and weld-line strength
Flame-retardant ABS 200–230 °C, higher mold protection Density 1.15–1.25 g/cm³, lower impact, V-0 possible Avoid mixing with unfilled ABS; acidic gas potential, different shrinkage
Heat-resistant ABS 230–270 °C, slower cycles HDT 95–110 °C, lower flow Requires higher barrel and mold temperatures; purge thoroughly
PC/ABS blend 260–280 °C, mold 60–90 °C Notched Izod above 40 kJ/m², HDT 95–120 °C Harder drop-in replacement; phase separation and thermal damage risk if mixed

For a mold currently running general-purpose ABS, the main transfer checks for 305AB are gate seal time, packing-pressure response, and post-mold shrinkage. A change in melt-flow rate of more than 15 % relative to the incumbent material may require revised hold-pressure profiles or gate dimensions if sink marks or dimensional instability appear. For a mold running flame-retardant ABS, the nozzle and barrel temperature should be re-profiled downward for unfilled ABS if judged appropriate, and mold surfaces should be cleaned because brominated flame-retardant residues can cause corrosion. Density differences between unfilled ABS and FR-ABS also alter shot-weight calculations; a shift from 1.04 g/cm³ to 1.20 g/cm³ changes part mass and must be accounted for in material-handling and quality records. If the mold was designed for FR-ABS at a specific cavity wall thickness to achieve V-0, replacing it with 305AB may not satisfy the flame rating and should not be done without regulatory re-evaluation.

When transfer is attempted from PC/ABS to unfilled ABS, barrel temperature must be lowered from the 260–280 °C range to the ABS range before introducing 305AB. Residual polycarbonate in the hot runner or barrel can produce hard, unmelted domains and surface delamination if processing temperatures are lowered too quickly. A dedicated purging sequence with a low-melt-temperature polypropylene purge or commercial ABS-compatible purging compound should be used, and the machine should be inspected for dead zones, check-ring leakage, and hot-runner manifold retainers that may hold high-temperature residue. Cooling time may also shift because unfilled ABS generally has lower heat distortion resistance than PC/ABS and may require lower mold temperatures to control warpage.

For applications such as small appliance housings, electronic enclosure bezels, power-tool clamshells, vacuum cleaner shrouds, and automotive interior trim substrates, Yuyao Weier ABS 305AB can be considered if the required mechanical load, thermal exposure, and flammability class are within general-purpose unfilled ABS limits. Structural bosses and snap-fit arms should be assessed using notched impact values from the intended production lot under ISO 180/A, and dimensional stability should be checked on molded specimens exposed to the highest predicted service temperature. If exact grade-specific data for 305AB cannot be obtained from the producer, the part should be qualified on production equipment using the target mold and downstream assembly fixtures, with molded specimens tested under ISO 527-2, ISO 178, ISO 180/A, ISO 75-2, and ISO 294-4 before release. The grade should not be blended with polycarbonate, flame-retardant masterbatch, or other ABS regrind without supplier evaluation because rheology, color stability, and impact balance can shift outside the validated window.
