Yike Chemical ABS B432/E is an extrusion-grade acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer specified for sheet extrusion, coextrusion, and downstream thermoforming applications. The product is positioned between low-flow ABS sheet grades and high-flow injection moulding grades, with a melt viscosity profile that provides sufficient melt strength for vertical sag-limited thermoforming while retaining dimensional stability in polished-roll calendering. Melt volume-flow rate is determined under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C with a 10 kg piston load; representative values for this extrusion class fall in the range of 5–12 cm³/10 min. Density is normally reported between 1.04 g/cm³ and 1.06 g/cm³ according to ISO 1183-1:2019. The grade is distinguished from injection-moulding ABS types by lower shear-thinning behaviour in the die and a more stable parison or sheet gauge across typical throughputs. The latest manufacturer’s certificate of analysis remains the controlling document for any individual lot.
The primary differentiator is melt viscosity. High-flow ABS injection grades typically exhibit melt volume-flow rates from 20 cm³/10 min to 45 cm³/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022, which improves filling of thin-walled mould cavities but reduces melt strength during free-surface stretching. B432/E, by contrast, is formulated for elongational flow stability in sheet and profile dies. The lower melt index reduces drawdown sag at typical sheet-forming temperatures of 150–180 °C and permits heavier gauge sheet above 4 mm to be thermoformed without excessive wall-thickness variation. Injection grades also tend toward narrower molecular weight distribution to reduce cycle time and improve spiral flow; this extrusion grade preserves a broader distribution to increase die swell consistency and melt tension. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, but the operational difference is observed in vacuum forming as reduced sheet thinning at corner radii. In addition, injection grades often carry mould-release additives that can interfere with corona or adhesive surface preparation, whereas B432/E is supplied without such external lubricants for downstream printing and lamination.
Before extrusion, the granules are dried in a desiccant hopper dryer with a dew point of -40 °C or lower. Moisture content is reduced below 0.05 % by mass, with verification by ISO 15512:2019 method A. Drying temperature is held at 80 °C for 3–4 h; residence times beyond 6 h may produce yellowing or granule bridging in the hopper. Single-screw extruders with L/D ratios from 30:1 to 36:1 and three-zone barrier screws are preferred for sheet production. A barrel profile from 190 °C at the feed throat to 230 °C at the metering zone, with a flat die temperature of 220–240 °C, maintains homogeneous melt temperature. Calender roll temperatures are set from 70 °C to 100 °C; the upper roll is kept 5–10 °C cooler than the middle roll to control surface gloss and prevent sheet blocking. If ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %, the dried material must be conveyed under dry air because rehydration at the hopper inlet is otherwise measurable within 30 min.
The grade is suitable as a coextruded cap layer because its melt viscosity is compatible with general-purpose ABS substrate grades at shear rates typical of flat-die extrusion. Cap layer thickness is normally 5–15 % of total sheet thickness. Melt temperature mismatch between capstock and substrate should be maintained below 10 °C at the feedblock to prevent interfacial flow instabilities. A feedback of 0.3–0.5 m/min variation in line speed across the sheet width may still produce gauge bands if the die lip gap is not adjusted independently. Coextrusion with recycled ABS substrate is possible when the recycled fraction is kept below 40 wt% and the reclaimed material is screened through a 60 mesh screen pack to remove charred particles. In this configuration, B432/E provides surface quality and blocks migration of low-molecular-weight contaminants from the recycle layer. Unlike some high-gloss capstock grades, it does not require a chrome-plated polishing roll to achieve uniform surface aesthetics, although polished rolls improve gloss values above 90 GU when measured at 60° under ISO 2813:2014.
For specification compliance, tensile, flexural, and thermal data are generated from ISO moulded test specimens. The following table lists representative class ranges for this extrusion-grade product under standard laboratory conditions.
| Property | Test method | Representative class range |
|---|---|---|
| Melt volume-flow rate, 220 °C / 10 kg | ISO 1133-1:2022 | 5–12 cm³/10 min |
| Charpy notched impact strength, 23 °C | ISO 179-1/1eA | 20–35 kJ/m² |
| Tensile yield stress, 50 mm/min | ISO 527-2/1A | 35–45 MPa |
| Tensile modulus, 1 mm/min | ISO 527-2/1A | 2000–2300 MPa |
| Flexural modulus, 2 mm/min | ISO 178:2019 | 1900–2200 MPa |
| Vicat softening temperature, B50 | ISO 306:2022 | 98–104 °C |
| Moisture content after drying | ISO 15512:2019 method A | <0.05 % by mass |
These values are not batch-certification limits. The range reflects variation across ABS sheet-extrusion products of similar viscosity class. Each production lot should be verified against the Yike Chemical certificate of analysis and ISO 1043-1 material designation.
For heavy-gauge thermoforming, sheet temperature is normally brought to 150–180 °C at the surface. Core temperature should not lag the surface by more than 10 °C, otherwise differential stretching introduces residual stress. B432/E is selected where draw ratios of 1.5:1 to 3:1 are required without pre-stretch plug assistance. The material’s lower melt index compared with injection grades reduces web sag between the clamp frame and the sheet rail. Male-mould thermoforming with aluminium tooling at 70–90 °C produces more uniform wall-stock distribution than free-blown female moulding when exact part thickness is controlled by plug speed. For thin-gauge inline forming at 0.5–1.5 mm sheet thickness, pin-chain transport must maintain tension uniformity below 2 % edge-to-edge variation. Excessive regrind addition above 25 wt% narrows the forming window because degraded butadiene domains increase gel counts and reduce extensibility. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; line trials with actual sheet width and draw ratio are required to confirm part tolerances.
Regulatory status for ABS B432/E is governed by the supplied safety data sheet and product compliance statement. For European Union applications, the grade must be assessed under REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and, where relevant, EU Regulation 10/2011 on plastic materials intended to come into contact with food. No food-contact approval should be inferred from standard ABS property data. For United States applications, food-contact use requires article-specific compliance with 21 CFR 180.22 or successor provisions and migration testing under the intended temperature and simulant conditions. The product is not supplied with flame-retardant additives; therefore it is not rated UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm unless a halogenated or phosphorus-based masterbatch is evaluated separately. Addition of such masterbatches may reduce melt strength and shift the processing window. The grade should not be formulated with amine-based processing stabilisers that can generate chromophores under prolonged thermo-oxidative stress. Outdoor use without UV protection is not recommended because unpigmented ABS yellows and embrittles under UV exposure; weatherable capstock should be used in exterior parts.
Above 250 °C melt temperature, butadiene-containing domains undergo thermo-oxidative degradation that produces discolouration and acrid volatiles. The recommended maximum melt temperature is 240 °C; short excursions to 245 °C may be tolerated for 15 min, but die-lip deposit increases rapidly beyond this point. Screw residence time should not exceed 8 min at 230 °C. Barrel zones above 240 °C are unnecessary and promote carbonaceous deposits on the screw root and breaker plate. At a production-scale sheet line operating near 900 kg/h on a 120 mm, 33:1 L/D extruder, melt pressure before the screen changer is normally maintained between 12 MPa and 18 MPa. Pressure excursions above 25 MPa indicate screen blinding or insufficient back-pressure control and should trigger filter replacement. The product is not intended for injection moulding of thin-wall parts below 1 mm wall thickness because the filling pressure exceeds practical clamp force limits on general-purpose moulding machines.
Comparative positioning is summarised against common ABS product classes.
| ABS grade category | Typical differentiator | Consequence for B432/E substitution |
|---|---|---|
| General-purpose injection ABS | MVR 20–45 cm³/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 | B432/E has lower flow and is unsuitable for thin-wall injection moulding |
| High-heat ABS | Vicat softening temperature above 110 °C under ISO 306:2022 B50 | B432/E is not recommended for continuous service above 100 °C |
| Plating-grade ABS | Etched surface morphology with high butadiene content | B432/E may not produce uniform electroless adhesion without special etching |
| Flame-retardant ABS | UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm via additive package | B432/E is normally UL 94 HB and requires external FR masterbatch |
| Polycarbonate/ABS alloy | Heat distortion above 110 °C and improved toughness | B432/E is unmodified ABS; it does not provide the same high-heat creep resistance |
In sheet extrusion and thermoforming, the substitution of B432/E for an injection-grade ABS is favoured when the part thickness exceeds 2 mm and the forming process is sag-limited rather than fill-limited. The product is not a direct replacement for PC/ABS alloys or high-heat ABS in automotive interior components exposed to repeated heat ageing above 100 °C. Conversely, for luggage shells, appliance door liners, sanitary ware panels, and indoor furniture edge bands, B432/E can be processed on standard vented extruders with polished-roll take-off when the moisture and melt-temperature limits are maintained.
