    More Introduction

Xiamen Meijiamei ABS 50G4F is identified as an unfilled acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding grade. The commercial designation 50G4F is supplier-specific and does not correspond directly to an ISO 2580-1:2002 data block; therefore, design qualification must reference the lot-specific certificate of analysis and the manufacturer’s published technical data sheet. Published data for this specific configuration is limited. The numerical values presented below are drawn from representative unfilled ABS grades of comparable melt-flow class and are intended as screening boundaries rather than guaranteed lot properties. Under ISO 1183-1:2019, density for this category is typically 1.03–1.07 g/cm³; water absorption after 24 h immersion at 23°C under ISO 62:2008 is generally below 0.5% by mass. The product is supplied in pellet form for conventional screw injection moulding. No claims are made for extrusion blow moulding, sheet extrusion, or additive manufacturing.

Thermal and Rheological Boundaries in Moulding Operations

Drying before processing is mandatory. Unfilled ABS absorbs moisture reversibly; at equilibrium with 50% RH and 23°C, bulk moisture can reach 0.10–0.30% by mass. For injection moulding, pellet moisture content should be reduced to below 0.06% by mass, verified by Karl Fischer titration or a calibrated moisture analyser. Drying in a dehumidifying hopper dryer at 80°C for 2–4 h is the standard starting point for virgin pellets, while regrind fractions up to 20% by mass may require the upper end of that range. Melt temperature measured by infrared thermocouple at the nozzle should be maintained between 220°C and 250°C. Prolonged residence above 260°C or barrel hold times exceeding 10 min risk oxidative degradation of the polybutadiene phase, manifesting as yellowing and notched impact loss. The processing window is therefore approximately 30°C wide, but the critical upper boundary is resin-time dependent.

On electric injection moulding machines with general-purpose screws of 18:1–22:1 L/D, back pressure of 3–7 MPa and screw surface speed of 0.2–0.5 m/s are typical for this viscosity band. Mould temperature should be controlled from 40°C to 80°C; the lower half of that range favours high-gloss surfaces, while the upper half improves impact-critical thick sections. In cold-runner tools, direct sprue gates and edge gates with land length of 0.8–1.5 mm are common. On a 120 t hydraulic machine with a 40 mm diameter screw and 20:1 L/D, reported fill pressures for 2.0 mm wall electrical housings of this flow class frequently lie between 60–90 MPa, depending on gating and flow length. Cavity pressure at velocity-to-pressure switchover should be 30–50 MPa for sink-free surfaces; a short-shot sequence can establish a 95–98% filled part before transfer. Gate seal time at 60°C mould is generally 1.0–2.0 s per 1.0 mm gate diameter; hold pressure should be maintained at least to gate freeze to avoid sink and void formation.

Electrical enclosures, appliance housings, and automotive interior trim are the main application contexts for this grade class. For a 2.0 mm injection-moulded plaque, a representative unfilled ABS of this flow class exhibits tensile yield stress of 35–45 MPa when tested to ISO 527-2:2012 at 23°C, flexural modulus of 1800–2500 MPa to ISO 178:2019, and notched Charpy impact of 15–25 kJ/m² to ISO 179-1/1eA:2010. Temperature deflection under 1.8 MPa by ISO 75-2:2013 is typically 75–85°C; the 0.45 MPa value is 85–95°C. These values support non-structural enclosures requiring moderate stiffness and room-temperature impact resistance. UL 94 classifications for unfilled ABS are typically HB at 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm; flame-retardant requirements must be specified separately because this grade is not categorised as flame-retardant. Surface resistivity and comparative tracking index data for lot-specific 50G4F should be requested if electrical insulation performance is design-critical.

Test temperature is the largest uncontrolled variable in impact comparisons. ISO 179-1/1eA notched Charpy values for general-purpose ABS at 23°C often fail to predict performance at -30°C, where the polybutadiene phase passes through its glass transition and the failure mode shifts from ductile tearing to brittle fracture. A similar grade may show 15 kJ/m² at 23°C but less than 8 kJ/m² at -30°C; high-impact and polycarbonate/ABS blend grades are formulated to maintain greater energy absorption at low temperatures. Consequently, when automotive interior components are injection moulded in 50G4F, conditioning to winter temperatures can reveal field failures that room-temperature laboratory data do not capture.

What Separates 50G4F from High-Impact and Flame-Retardant ABS Resins?

The primary differentiation from other ABS products is the balance between melt flow and room-temperature impact. High-impact ABS grades often achieve notched Izod values above 30 kJ/m² at 23°C by increasing the polybutadiene content or rubber particle size; this typically lowers the melt mass-flow rate and reduces tensile modulus. Flame-retardant ABS compounds rely on brominated or phosphorus-based additive packages to reach UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm, but tensile yield and flow length are usually reduced relative to unfilled general-purpose grades. Glass-fibre-reinforced ABS exhibits higher modulus but introduces anisotropic shrinkage and surface roughness. The 50G4F grade is understood as a general-purpose unfilled material; it should not be substituted for high-impact or flame-retardant grades without re-validation of impact, thermal, and flammability performance.

Values in this table are representative screening ranges for unfilled ABS class, not supplier-certified specifications for 50G4F. Design decisions must use the lot-specific certificate of analysis.

When Polycarbonate Blends or Glass-Filled ABS Are Evaluated as Substitutes

Polycarbonate/ABS blends raise heat deflection temperature and low-temperature impact, but they also increase melt temperature requirements to 250–280°C and require larger injection pressures due to higher melt viscosity. Glass-filled ABS raises flexural modulus but reduces weld-line strength and changes mould shrinkage from the typical 0.4–0.7% of unfilled ABS to a range that can be anisotropic: 0.2–0.4% in the flow direction and 0.4–0.6% transverse, depending on fibre orientation. If 50G4F is used as a cost-reduction substitute for these materials, the heat deflection temperature and notched impact performance at sub-zero temperatures must be revalidated. A direct material swap without tooling modification is rarely acceptable when wall thickness is below 2.0 mm because flow-length-to-thickness limits differ. For unfilled ABS of this class, spiral flow length at 2.0 mm wall and 80°C mould under 80 MPa injection pressure is typically 200–300 mm; the specific value for 50G4F must be confirmed by spiral-flow mould measurement.

Moisture Uptake, Regrind Ratio, and Drying Constraints

Storage should be maintained in sealed containers at 10–30°C and relative humidity below 60% to limit moisture re-uptake before drying. Regrind levels should be controlled below 20% by mass because repeated heat histories reduce polybutadiene impact performance and increase the batch-to-batch variance of melt flow. Processors should request the certificate of analysis for each lot, including melt mass-flow rate, notched impact, and tensile yield, and should verify colour and additive package if the product is supplied in precoloured form. From a regulatory perspective, ABS moulding compounds are typically within scope of RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH Regulation EC No 1907/2006 for lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE. For food-contact applications, 21 CFR 177.1020 covers acrylonitrile copolymers only under specified extractive conditions and end-use limitations; no such clearance should be assumed for this commercial grade unless the supplier provides a specific compliance certificate.
