    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Product data for Xiamen Defenghang ABS L218(B) are not publicly disclosed as a complete ISO 19062-1 designation block. Grade-specific acceptance values therefore require a supplier certificate of analysis, while class-level references for unmodified acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resins are drawn from ISO 19062-2 and ISO 2580-2. The material is a two-phase thermoplastic consisting of a styrene-acrylonitrile matrix and dispersed polybutadiene rubber particles. The suffix (B) may denote a black or modified lot in supplier-specific nomenclature, but this cannot be assumed. If (B) indicates carbon black pigmentation, the grade may exhibit higher opacity, slightly higher melt viscosity at a fixed shear rate, and altered infrared preheating response compared with natural ABS. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; the values below are screening references, not product release limits.

Incoming inspection of Xiamen Defenghang ABS L218(B) begins with verification of melt-volume flow rate and density because these two tests separate high-flow, high-impact, and filled grades at low cost. The screening intervals in Table 1 are derived from general-purpose ABS ranges under ISO 19062-2; they are not a substitute for the supplier data block. A lot found outside these intervals may be a modified, recycled, or filled material and must not be introduced into validated processes without a moulding trial.

    Residual moistureISO 15512:2019≤0.05%

Moisture content should be checked by ISO 15512:2019 or coulometric Karl Fischer method. General-purpose ABS is supplied nominally dry, but warehouse storage in coastal humidity, or an RH above 60%, can raise surface moisture to 0.15–0.30%. Residual moisture above 0.05% will generate splay in injection-moulded parts and can depress notched Charpy impact through void formation and interfacial defects. If the certificate of analysis omits moisture, in-house loss-on-drying at 105 °C for 30 min can be used as a rapid comparator, but it is not specific to water.

What Melt-Temperature and Residence-Time Limits Govern Safe Conversion?

Before melt conversion, Xiamen Defenghang ABS L218(B) should be dried in a desiccant-bed dryer, not a hot-air oven. Drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h to a residual moisture level below 0.05% is the minimum conservative condition for general-purpose ABS. Material stored at RH above 60% should receive 4 h; if the lot contains regrind or has visible surface condensation, the limit should be tightened to 0.02%. The dryer must deliver air at a dew point below −30 °C and an airflow rate of at least 0.5 m/s through the material bed. A desiccant wheel with regeneration at 150 °C is adequate, but an overloaded hopper with a short air path will leave wet core pellets even when the set point is reached.

Barrel temperature profiles should be based on the actual MVR of the lot. For intermediate-flow ABS with MVR of 10–20 cm³/10 min, the rear zone may be set at 190–210 °C, middle zones 210–230 °C, and nozzle 230–250 °C. If MVR exceeds 25 cm³/10 min, the nozzle should be set at 220–230 °C to limit thermal degradation of the butadiene phase. A melt temperature above 250 °C accelerates oxidation, shifts colour to yellow, and produces butadiene-derived volatile components. Residence time at maximum barrel temperature must not exceed 5 min. In hot-runner tools, dead spots and unswept melt channels should be minimized because stagnant material carbonises and releases black specks.

Mould temperature should be maintained between 40 °C and 80 °C. At wall temperatures below 40 °C, thin sections freeze prematurely, which increases weld-line visibility and reduces impact strength at knit lines. Above 80 °C, cycle time increases without proportional improvement in tensile modulus. For glossy surfaces, higher mould temperatures in the range 60–80 °C reduce flow marks but may trap volatiles if venting is inadequate. Back pressure of 0.3–0.7 MPa hydraulic and screw surface speed of 0.15–0.30 m/s are class-level starting points; actual settings require a gate-freeze study using ISO 294-1 specimens.

For narrow gates or wall sections below 1.2 mm, capillary rheometry per ISO 11443:2021 should be used to map apparent viscosity at the expected shear rate. Unmodified intermediate-flow ABS can exhibit apparent viscosity between 80 Pa·s and 300 Pa·s at 220 °C and 1000 s⁻¹, but the L218(B) lot may deviate if carbon black or impact-modifier content is different. A mould-filling simulation should not be run with generic ABS data; a lot-specific Cross-WLF or power-law fit is required.

Clamp force estimation uses the projected area of cavities and cold runners. For technical ABS parts with wall thickness 2–3 mm, cavity pressure is typically 30–50 MPa; thin-wall parts with flow ratio above 150 may require 60 MPa or more. The required clamp force in kilonewtons is cavity pressure multiplied by projected area. For a 500 cm² part at 40 MPa, the projected force is 2000 kN. This is an example calculation, not a statement of L218(B) capability.

For sheet or profile extrusion, a melt temperature of 190–230 °C with a polished roll stack between 70 °C and 100 °C is class-level practice. Low roll temperatures produce frozen-in orientation and contribute to post-forming shrinkage. Die melt pressure should be monitored continuously. Pressure excursions above 20 MPa at the die or increasing torque on a co-rotating twin-screw line with L/D 36–40 suggest filler accumulation, screen blockage, or incompatible reclaim.

Regrind content is a critical threshold. At addition levels above 20 wt%, the heat history of ABS from previous processing may reduce notched impact and alter MFR by ±10% against virgin pellets; the exact shift depends on drying, residence time, and shear. Production lines that feed edge trim directly back to a twin-screw extruder should use a gravimetric feeder with mass-flow accuracy within ±1.5% and record melt pressure at the die plate. If the die pressure trend drifts by more than 10% at a constant screw speed, the lot composition is not stable. Published data for this specific L218(B) configuration is limited; no single regrind limit should be accepted without a designed experiment.

When High-Impact ABS, High-Heat ABS, or PC/ABS Are Evaluated as Alternates

Substitution of Xiamen Defenghang ABS L218(B) by another ABS class requires a comparison of intrinsic property trade-offs. High-impact ABS with butadiene content in the range 18–25 wt% raises notched Charpy impact at 23 °C and retains more ductility at −30 °C, but tensile yield stress and modulus are lower, and the material may have higher melt viscosity. High-flow ABS with MVR above 30 cm³/10 min fills thin-wall electronic housings at lower injection pressure but shows reduced impact, higher shrinkage anisotropy, and greater risk of gate blush.

High-heat ABS based on α-methylstyrene or maleimide comonomer can lift Vicat softening temperature above 105 °C, but the processing window narrows. Barrel temperature must rise toward 240–260 °C, thermal degradation accelerates, and the polymer is more sensitive to residence time. If L218(B) is a standard general-purpose grade, it should not be placed in applications requiring continuous service above 85 °C without part-level heat-deflection testing according to ISO 75-2:2013 at 1.8 MPa.

PC/ABS blends differ in density, 1.13–1.20 g/cm³, Vicat softening temperature, 110–130 °C, and low-temperature impact. They demand higher drying at 100–120 °C for 4 h to a moisture limit below 0.02%, and they cannot be blended into a straight ABS recovery stream without changing the rheology and heat performance. A conversion from L218(B) to PC/ABS therefore requires mould-temperature, hot-runner, and purge procedure changes, not a simple material substitution.

Representative application categories for an unmodified ABS grade include rigid appliance fascia panels, electrical equipment housings, automotive interior trim, and extruded sheets for thermoforming. Each category has distinct test obligations. Electrical equipment may require glow-wire testing according to IEC 60695-2-11 at 650 °C or 750 °C depending on end-use. Automotive interiors commonly require ISO 3795 burn-rate below 100 mm/min. Thermoforming requires hot-tensile and sag-resistance data. The L218(B) material cannot be assigned to these applications solely on the basis of an ABS class description.

Outdoor use of general-purpose ABS is limited because of UV degradation. Black pigmentation can mask yellowing but not surface erosion. Weatherability screening is conducted by ISO 4892-2 xenon arc exposure; gloss loss and tensile retention must be measured on the actual L218(B) formulation rather than extrapolated from natural ABS data.

Chemical incompatibility is a further differentiator. ABS is attacked by ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated solvents. Environmental stress-cracking resistance should be evaluated per ISO 22088-2:2006 using the service fluid at a defined applied strain. Additive packages that shift melt pH or introduce low-molecular-weight plasticisers must be verified by multiple extrusions and subsequent ISO 1133-1 MVR shift measurement.

Regulatory documentation for Xiamen Defenghang ABS L218(B) must be tied to the lot or batch number. Table 2 lists the minimum documentary checks for global trade. Compliance must not be assumed from the product designation alone.

Absence of a UL yellow card means the grade should not be marked HB or V-0; a part can be marked only with the published thickness. For food-contact applications, the formulation must meet the total non-volatile extractives and nitrile migration limits specified in FDA 21 CFR 180.22; generic ABS compliance cannot be assumed without lot-specific documentation.

All statements in this technical introduction are class-level for unmodified ABS unless the supplier certificate of analysis or an ISO 19062-1 data block for Xiamen Defenghang ABS L218(B) confirms otherwise. Grade-specific parameters for processing, failure-mode boundaries, and regulatory status must be established from lot-specific data before mass production release.
