Xiamen Defenghang ABS H218(H) is a pelletised acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer supplied by Xiamen Defenghang under the alphanumeric grade designation H218(H). The public certificate of analysis for this specific register is not uniformly available outside direct supplier documentation; consequently, the numerical property set required for purchase acceptance should be obtained from the mill certificate or technical datasheet current to the supply batch. The parenthetical H suffix is regarded as a supplier-modifier for heat resistance, heat stabilisation, or internal colour classification in certain domestic Chinese trade listings, but its exact meaning is not defined by an ISO, ASTM, or DIN grade standard. This document therefore defines the product through standardised ABS characterisation methods, processing envelopes derived from published polymer-processing data, and the comparative limits that separate H218(H) from generic ABS, HIPS, and ABS/PC blends.
ABS resins of this class comprise a continuous poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) phase and a dispersed polybutadiene rubber phase. The rubber phase controls low-temperature impact response, while the SAN phase contributes tensile strength, chemical resistance, and melt processability. Because rubber content, graft ratio, and SAN molecular weight are not identifiable from the grade code alone, incoming inspection should verify the properties listed below before tool trials begin.
The melt rheology of ABS of this class is shear-thinning. Apparent viscosity at 220 °C and 100 s⁻¹ may range from 100 Pa·s to 300 Pa·s depending on SAN molecular weight and rubber content; at 1000 s⁻¹, viscosity can fall to 40–120 Pa·s. These values are typical for medium-flow ABS compounds and should not be used as H218(H) certificate replacements. Filling simulations require capillary rheometry data rather than a single MVR point. The processing window is bounded by the onset of polybutadiene degradation above 250 °C and by increasing melt viscosity below 190 °C.
For injection-moulded electronic enclosures and automotive interior trim, the procurement specification should request the following values from the H218(H) certificate. The test conditions are standard ABS reference conditions; if the supplier reports under a different standard, the result is not directly transferable. A single-point melt volume-flow rate is not sufficient for hot-runner pressure-drop calculations; capillary rheometry should be performed when a new tool has a flow length above 150 mm and wall thickness below 2.0 mm.

In addition to the table, the supplier certificate should state the production date, batch number, and standard revision. A certificate that lists only nominal values without test standard designations is not auditable. Every incoming lot should be sampled under a defined plan; retain a sealed reference sample for property re-test if a batch dispute occurs. For low-temperature applications, requesting Charpy data at -30 °C is recommended because room-temperature impact values do not predict the ductile-to-brittle transition in ABS.
Drying is the first boundary condition. H218(H) pellets should be processed through a desiccant dryer with a dew point at or below -30 °C, using a drying temperature of 80 °C for 2–4 h. At ambient relative humidity above 60 %, closed hopper conveying and a hopper dryer are recommended because ABS pellets and regrind pick up surface moisture rapidly. Moisture above 0.05 wt% at the machine throat produces splay, silver streaking, and reduced weld-line strength. If a lot has been stored in an uncontrolled warehouse, drying time may need to be extended to 4–6 h; the residual moisture should be verified by Karl Fischer titration before processing.
A reciprocating-screw injection-moulding machine with a screw L/D ratio of 20:1 to 25:1 and a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 is appropriate. A reverse-taper or check-ring non-return valve is required for cushion stability. The barrel profile is usually set between 190 °C and 240 °C; a starting set-point is rear 190–210 °C, centre 210–230 °C, front 220–240 °C, and nozzle 230–240 °C. Melt temperatures above 250 °C should be avoided. If the barrel residence time exceeds 5 min, purge with general-purpose polystyrene or acrylic. Back pressure can be set at 3–7 bar; screw speed should be 30–60 rpm; shot size should be maintained between 25 % and 75 % of maximum barrel capacity to limit residence-time variability.
Plastication capacity should be matched to shot weight so that the residence time of melt in the barrel remains short. For a given machine, residence time can be estimated as the ratio of barrel inventory to shot weight multiplied by cycle time; values below 5 min are recommended. A machine with excessive barrel capacity relative to part weight can degrade the polybutadiene phase even at a nominal set-point below 240 °C. This is a frequent failure mode on large machines running small multi-cavity tools.
Mould temperature controls gloss and shrinkage anisotropy. A mould temperature of 30–60 °C is suitable for general technical parts; high-gloss moulded surfaces may require 60–80 °C. Injection velocity should be profiled from moderate to fast to prevent hesitation marks. Packing pressure should begin at 50–70 % of peak injection pressure, and holding time should be derived from gate-seal time using cavity pressure monitoring or shot-weight stability. Unfilled ABS grades of this type generally exhibit mould shrinkage values between 0.4 % and 0.7 %, with the larger value typically observed parallel to flow; the actual value must be confirmed on a 3.2 mm plaque per ASTM D955-21 before tool steel is cut.
Gate design for H218(H) should follow ABS practice: fan or tab gates are preferred for high-gloss parts to minimise jetting; pin gates can be used in cold-runner multi-cavity tools if the gate diameter is at least 50–70 % of the wall thickness. Unidirectional flow in a plaque tool should be maintained for electroplating because anisotropic flow orientation changes the surface distribution of butadiene domains and causes non-uniform etch.
Electrical enclosure moulders using hot-runner systems should verify manifold temperature uniformity within ±5 °C. Dead spots in valve-gate hot runners can retain ABS at melt temperature and generate black specks after start-up; sequential valve-gate control should minimise idle nozzle hold time. If the H218(H) lot contains regrind, the regrind fraction should be kept below 20 wt% unless rheological and impact testing demonstrates stable retention of Charpy notched impact and MVR after three regeneration cycles. Blending of production regrind at 20 wt% with virgin pellets is common in non-appearance parts, but the resulting melt viscosity and colour shift must be validated against the original lot.
When H218(H) is diverted to electrolytic plating for automotive badges, grilles, or appliance bezels, the polybutadiene phase must be distributed uniformly because the chromic acid etch removes butadiene domains to create mechanical anchoring sites. A typical ABS etching bath operates at 60–70 °C with 350–420 g/L chromium trioxide and 340–400 g/L sulphuric acid; immersion time of 5–15 min is adjusted to surface roughness and skin thickness. After electroless copper or nickel, peel strength values in the range 0.8–1.2 N/mm are common acceptance thresholds for exterior automotive plating; exact OEM specifications differ. The suitability of H218(H) for this process cannot be assumed from the grade code. If the supplier does not designate an electroplating register, the moulded part should be tested in accordance with ASTM B533 and subjected to thermal cycling within the end-product service range before production approval.
Plating-grade ABS requires a higher and more uniform butadiene content than general-purpose ABS. If the H218(H) certificate does not list rubber content or plating suitability, a cross-sectional microscopy check after etching should be performed to confirm that the etch depth is shallow and uniform. Over-etched parts show excessive surface roughness and lower peel strength after thermal cycling.
The principal difference between H218(H) and an unmodified H218 register is the supplier-applied parenthetical suffix, not an independent global grade definition. Direct substitution between H218 and H218(H) is not recommended in the absence of a published delta specification. A shift in Vicat softening temperature of 5 K can alter heat-deflection performance in painted interior components; comparative qualification should therefore include ISO 306 Vicat B50, ISO 75-2/A HDT, ISO 179-1/1eA Charpy notched impact, and ISO 1133-1 MVR results from the same testing laboratory.
Against ABS/PC blends, a standard ABS such as H218(H) typically has lower melt viscosity and lower heat resistance. Published ABS/PC grades may show Vicat B50 values from 110 °C to 130 °C, whereas unreinforced ABS registers often fall between 90 °C and 105 °C. The actual H218(H) value must be extracted from the supplier certificate. ABS/PC also provides improved low-temperature notched impact but reduced resistance to ketones, esters, and certain aromatic hydrocarbons; a solvent-wipe test with methyl ethyl ketone on a non-visible surface can indicate whether cleaning-fluid exposure may attack a standard ABS grade in service.
Compared with high-impact polystyrene, ABS of this general class usually provides higher tensile modulus and better resistance to aliphatic solvents, but comparison requires tensile testing per ISO 527-1 because HIPS datasheets often use different specimen thickness and conditioning protocols. The H218(H) register should also not be assumed to be flame retardant. Standard ABS is commonly classified as HB under UL 94; if a V-0 or V-2 classification is required for electrical construction, a dedicated flame-retardant compound or a verified H218(H) lot certificate is necessary. The material is not intended for food-contact or medical devices unless migration testing under the applicable national regulation is completed.
Incoming batch control for H218(H) should monitor melt volume-flow rate and moisture because these two variables explain a large share of injection-moulding reject modes. Lot-to-lot MVR variation exceeding ±10 % from the agreed nominal value may shift filling pressure, packing time, and shrinkage enough to violate dimensional tolerances. The product is also not intended for continuous outdoor exposure without ultraviolet stabilisation. These grading and processing boundaries, rather than the raw designation by itself, define the technical envelope in which the H218(H) product may be used with acceptable risk.
