Xiamen Defenghang ABS D218 is an unfilled acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer designation used in injection moulding and extrusion conversion. The trade designation does not by itself disclose melt volume-flow rate, rubber particle size distribution, polybutadiene content, or processing-stabiliser package. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, so the designation must be read against the supplier’s lot certificate and not against generic ABS literature. For any manufacturing specification, the processor should require a certificate of analysis containing the relevant ISO 2580-1:2002 designation, melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022, and notched impact strength under ISO 179-1/1eA:2010. This is necessary to prevent substitution errors between general-purpose ABS, heat-resistant ABS, flame-retarded ABS, and electroplating ABS grades.
The base polymer belongs to the ABS family defined by ISO 1043-1:2011. Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resins are two-phase systems in which grafted polybutadiene or styrene-butadiene rubber particles are dispersed in a continuous styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer matrix. The generic CAS Registry Number for acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer is 9003-56-9; however, this entry covers a broad compositional space and does not define the acrylonitrile content, butadiene content, molecular weight distribution, or additive package of D218. The D218 grade may contain processing lubricants, thermal stabilisers, mould release agents, and possibly toners that are not captured by the generic CAS record.
Regulatory classification of unfilled natural ABS is not typically hazard-classified under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, but a pigmented, flame-retarded, or compounded D218 variant may fall under a different classification. The processor is required to obtain the safety data sheet for the exact lot. Under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, the REACH Candidate List and Annex XVII restrictions apply to intentional added substances and impurities. A D218 lot should be screened for cadmium-based pigments, certain phthalates, and brominated flame retardants if the end use is placed on the EU market. Under Directive 2011/65/EU, Annex II, restricted substances including lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers are regulated at the homogeneous-material level. Compliance cannot be inferred from the resin designation alone; supplier test documentation is required.
| Regulatory requirement | Reference | Assessment for ABS D218 | Verification status |
|---|---|---|---|
| EU classification and labelling | Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 | Unfilled natural ABS is not typically hazard-classified; compounded variants may differ | Safety data sheet required |
| REACH Candidate List communication | Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Article 33 | Screening against Candidate List required if supplied in the EU | Supplier statement required |
| RoHS restricted substances | Directive 2011/65/EU, Annex II | Homogeneous-material limits apply to lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium(VI), PBB and PBDE | Lot-specific test report required |
| EU food-contact plastic materials | Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 | Overall migration and specific migration limits apply to the final article; resin designation does not establish compliance | End-use migration testing required |
| US food-contact acrylonitrile copolymers | 21 CFR 180.22 | Applies only to specific copolymer compositions and end-use limitations; D218 must be demonstrated against the regulation | Lot-specific certification required |
Residual moisture at the feed throat should be maintained below 0.02 wt% for unfilled ABS when surface gloss, weldline strength, and dimensional stability are process-critical. This value is a general ABS drying requirement and is not a D218-specific published figure. Desiccant drying at 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h is the common starting condition for general-purpose ABS; at ambient relative humidity above 60%, longer residence times or closed hopper transfer are typically required. Moisture-induced splay, silver streaks, and a measurable reduction in Charpy notched impact strength are observed when ABS is processed above the recommended moisture threshold. Batch-level drying verification by Karl Fischer titration or a calibrated moisture analyser is therefore used in production qualification.
The absence of a published melt volume-flow rate for D218 under ISO 1133-1:2022 means the exact shot size, injection velocity profile, hold pressure, and gate design cannot be derived from a public data block. A tiered rheological qualification is required. Capillary rheometry according to ISO 11443:2014 can determine shear viscosity over the range of 100 s⁻¹ to 5000 s⁻¹ at melt temperatures of 220 °C, 235 °C, and 250 °C. Differential scanning calorimetry according to ISO 11357-1:2016 can locate the glass transition of the styrene-acrylonitrile phase, typically near 105 °C to 110 °C for standard ABS, although the D218 result must be measured on the actual lot.
On a conventional three-zone injection moulding machine with a screw L/D ratio between 18:1 and 24:1, unfilled ABS is generally processed with a melt temperature measured by nozzle pyrometer between 220 °C and 250 °C. Mould surface temperature is commonly held between 40 °C and 80 °C. Peripheral screw speed should be limited to approximately 0.2 m/s to 0.4 m/s, and back pressure in the range of 0.5 MPa to 1.0 MPa is used to homogenise the melt without excessive shear heating. Because D218-specific viscosity data is limited, these values are starting points only and must be confirmed by pressure-drop studies on the intended tool. Thermal degradation of the polybutadiene phase above approximately 250 °C can produce yellowing, free-surface roughness, and a sharp decline in impact strength.
The values in Table 1 are general-purpose and heat-resistant unfilled ABS property envelopes compiled from ISO designation data and producer literature. They do not constitute measured D218 values. The D218 lot certificate should be checked against at least the following properties: melt volume-flow rate, tensile yield stress, notched Charpy impact strength, Vicat softening temperature, and heat deflection temperature. If these values are absent, the grade cannot be fully specified for load-bearing or safety-relevant moulded components.
| Property | Test method | General-purpose unfilled ABS envelope | Heat-resistant unfilled ABS envelope | D218 verification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Density | ISO 1183-1:2019 | 1.03–1.07 g/cm³ | 1.05–1.08 g/cm³ | Lot certificate required |
| Melt volume-flow rate | ISO 1133-1:2022, 220 °C/10 kg | 4–25 cm³/10 min | 2–15 cm³/10 min | Lot certificate required |
| Tensile yield stress | ISO 527-2:2012 | 35–50 MPa | 40–55 MPa | Lot certificate required |
| Tensile modulus | ISO 527-2:2012 | 1800–2600 MPa | 2000–2800 MPa | Lot certificate required |
| Charpy notched impact strength | ISO 179-1/1eA:2010, 23 °C | 10–30 kJ/m² | 8–25 kJ/m² | Lot certificate required |
| Vicat softening temperature | ISO 306:2013, B50 | 90–105 °C | 100–115 °C | Lot certificate required |
| Heat deflection temperature | ISO 75-2:2013, 1.8 MPa | 85–100 °C | 95–110 °C | Lot certificate required |
Applications for which D218 is frequently considered include non-load-bearing housing components, appliance trim, electrical enclosures, and general-purpose injection-moulded parts. This statement is conditional on the lot meeting the required flow-to-impact balance. Without the manufacturer’s lot-specific certificate, substitution into load-bearing, safety-relevant, or tight-tolerance assemblies is not justified. D218 should be evaluated for warpage, weldline strength, and dimensional stability using application-specific fixtures and production-scale process monitoring.
Differences between D218 and other ABS grades cannot be established from the designation alone. Electroplating ABS grades are typically formulated with bimodal polybutadiene particle size distributions and controlled rubber content to allow selective etching of the butadiene phase in chromic acid-based pre-treatment. Heat-resistant ABS grades often incorporate alpha-methylstyrene or maleimide-type comonomers to raise the Vicat softening temperature beyond the general-purpose envelope. A general-purpose D218 may not provide the required rubber morphology for plating adhesion or the thermal endurance for high-heat interior trim.
When D218 is substituted for an electroplating ABS, comparative testing under identical moulding conditions is required. At minimum, the evaluation should include melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022, notched impact strength under ISO 179-1/1eA:2010, Vicat softening temperature under ISO 306:2013, and heat deflection temperature under ISO 75-2:2013. Plating adhesion should be assessed after thermal cycling because inadequate rubber particle distribution can produce skip plating, blistering, or peel at the polymer-metal interface. Published data for D218 in electroplating applications is limited, so these comparative measurements are mandatory before production approval.
Batch-to-batch variance in ABS D218 should be monitored using melt volume-flow rate, notched impact strength, and Vicat softening temperature on each incoming lot. On a 90-tonne injection press producing thin-wall covers, a shift in melt volume-flow rate from 12 cm³/10 min to 18 cm³/10 min can alter fill pressure, switchover position, and sink-mark formation. Process monitoring of cushion distance, peak injection pressure, and part mass is therefore used to detect lot-to-lot drift. If the supplier cannot furnish lot-level thermal and rheological data, the processor should establish an incoming inspection plan under the same ISO methods before releasing the material to the production floor.
