Application of Wanma Macromolecule XLPE WMZPE-9092

When WMZPE-9092 is selected as a moisture-cured insulation for 0.6/1 kV copper-core building cables conforming to IEC 60502-1:2021, the compound is processed on a single-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 25:1 and a screw compression ratio of 2.8:1. The feed zone is held at 125–135 °C, the compression zone at 140–155 °C, the metering zone at 155–170 °C, and the head at 165–175 °C; this profile suppresses premature silanol condensation in the silane-curable grade. A screen pack arranged as 80/120/120 mesh stainless steel is installed ahead of the breaker plate. A representative dry blend consists of 100 parts WMZPE-9092, 0.2–0.4 part of pentaerythritol tetrakis(3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionate), 0.05–0.10 part of metal deactivator, and 1.5–2.0 parts of a silica pre-dispersed condensation catalyst masterbatch in which the tin-based catalyst is controlled to 0.02–0.04 phr. The extruded insulation over stranded copper conductors from 1.5 mm² to 16 mm² is drawn through a water bath at 85–90 °C for 6–8 h and conditioned at ambient temperature for 24 h before testing. Hot-set testing under IEC 60811-501:2012 is performed at 200 °C with an applied stress of 0.2 MPa; elongation under load must not exceed 175%, and permanent set must not exceed 15%. Tensile testing according to ASTM D638-14 at 250 mm/min is used to verify the IEC 60502-1:2021 minimum tensile strength of 12.5 MPa and elongation at break of 200% before ageing, with at least 75% retention after 168 h at 135 °C under IEC 60811-401:2012. Finished cables are installed in fixed conduits, concealed cavities, and below-surface wiring; the insulation carries a continuous conductor temperature rating of 90 °C and a short-circuit limit of 250 °C.

What Does EN 50618 Require from a DC 1500 V Cable Insulation Formulation?

For photovoltaic string and array cables, WMZPE-9092 is modified with a UV-stabilized black package that contains 2.0–2.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch and 0.2–0.4 wt% hindered amine light stabilizer. The carbon black is introduced through a side feeder after the base pellets are molten, not in the main feed throat, to prevent screw slip and throughput surging. Extrusion on a 70 mm single-screw line uses a melt temperature of 165–180 °C and conductor preheat at 80–120 °C for tinned copper conductors from 4 mm² to 10 mm². The insulation wall of 0.8–1.0 mm is moisture-cured for 4–8 h at 90 °C in a saturated sauna or water bath. EN 50618:2014 requires hot-set testing at 200 °C and 0.2 MPa with elongation under load no greater than 175% and permanent set no greater than 15%. Wet ageing is evaluated under EN 50618:2014 by 1000 h at 85 °C and 85% relative humidity; insulation resistance is then measured per IEC 60167 and must satisfy the specified minimum in the current standard. Specific wet-aged resistance values for WMZPE-9092 are often proprietary; the quoted threshold is the standard requirement. The finished cable is covered with a crosslinked polyolefin sheath and used in DC 1500 V feeder circuits for rooftop and utility-scale photovoltaic arrays.

In automotive high-voltage harness insulation, WMZPE-9092 is extruded as a 0.4–0.8 mm wall over Class 6 copper conductors specified in ISO 19642-3:2019. The formulation uses 100 parts WMZPE-9092, 0.3–0.5 part antioxidant masterbatch, 0.2 part metal deactivator, and 5–8 parts of a halogen-free intumescent masterbatch when LV 112-1 flame-retardance class is required. The feed and compression temperatures are set 10–15 °C lower than building-wire processing to limit friction heat from line speeds of 80–150 m/min and thin-wall shear heating. Moisture crosslinking is completed in a 90 °C water bath for 4–6 h, followed by 24 h ambient conditioning. The cured insulation is tested for hot set at 200 °C under IEC 60811-501:2012, cold impact at −40 °C according to ISO 19642-3, and short-circuit thermal overload at 250 °C for 5 s. Because intumescent flame-retardant fillers can suppress gel content, the condensation catalyst masterbatch may be raised by 0.5–1.0 part and gel content verified by ASTM D2765-16 method A at no less than 65%. The finished product is used as battery pack, motor inverter, and auxiliary high-voltage cable insulation in electric vehicles.

Silanol Condensation Control in 16 mm × 2.0 mm Radiant-Heating Pipe

In extruded multilayer barrier pipe for hydronic floor heating, WMZPE-9092 forms the 2.0 mm pressure layer at 16 mm outer diameter, coextruded with an 0.1 mm EVOH oxygen barrier layer and maleic anhydride-grafted polyethylene tie layers. The PE-X layer is run on a 45 mm barrier screw extruder with L/D 30:1 and a grooved feed section; melt temperature is held at 190–200 °C to maintain adhesion without degrading the EVOH layer. The formulation contains 100 parts WMZPE-9092, 0.3 part phenolic antioxidant, 0.1 part phosphite processing stabilizer, and 2.0–3.0 parts moisture-cure catalyst masterbatch. Crosslinking in a 95 °C water bath for 10–16 h or a 95 °C steam sauna continues until gel content measured by ASTM D2765-16 method A reaches at least 65%. Hydrostatic pressure testing under ISO 15875-2:2003 requires survival at 95 °C and 4.7 MPa for at least 165 h, and at 110 °C and 2.8 MPa for 8760 h for 16 mm pipe. Because WMZPE-9092 is not a potable-water-specific grade, pressure-pipe qualification must include the full hydrostatic design basis; published data for this specific configuration is limited. The finished pipe is supplied for embedded hydronic heating circuits and low-temperature radiator connections.

Heat-shrinkable tubing for low-voltage cable jointing is produced from WMZPE-9092 by first extruding a 0.6–1.2 mm wall tube over a mandrel die, then crosslinking, expanding, and cooling in the expanded state. The base compound contains 100 parts WMZPE-9092, 0.3–0.5 part of a hindered phenol primary antioxidant, 0.2–0.3 part of a phosphite secondary antioxidant, and 0.1–0.2 part silicone processing aid. Extrusion is performed at 160–180 °C with wall thickness variation maintained within ±0.05 mm. Electron beam irradiation at 60–120 kGy introduces crosslinks; if the stock is moisture-curable, immersion in a 90 °C water bath for 6–8 h achieves equivalent gel content. Expansion is performed by heating the crosslinked tube to 120–140 °C, expanding it over a mandrel to an inner diameter 2.0–2.5 times the recovered inner diameter, and cooling under vacuum to freeze the expanded geometry. Shrink ratio and longitudinal shrinkage are checked according to ASTM D2671-13; dielectric strength is verified under IEC 60684-2:2011. Finished sleeves are used for low-voltage cable insulation repair, joint encapsulation, and harness bundling.

When Chemical Blowing Agents Are Compounded Below the Decomposition Threshold

Crosslinked foam sheet and profile stock from WMZPE-9092 are produced by compounding 100 parts WMZPE-9092 with 0.6–1.2 parts azodicarbonamide, 0.4–0.8 part zinc oxide kicker, and 0.7–1.0 part dicumyl peroxide for crosslinking on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. The set point is limited to 125–145 °C from feed to die, below the 195–215 °C decomposition onset of azodicarbonamide; gas evolution begins only after the shaped stock enters a 220–240 °C hot-air tunnel. Crosslinking is initiated in the tunnel before blowing agents decompose, so the melt strength is sufficient to contain cell growth. Apparent density after expansion is controlled from 30 kg/m³ to 120 kg/m³ by adjusting azodicarbonamide loading and line speed. Apparent density is measured by ISO 845:2006, compression set under ASTM D1056-14, and closed-cell content by pycnometry as specified in ASTM D6226-21; closed-cell content above 80% is typically required for thermal insulation and buoyancy applications. The expanded stock is converted into hot-water tank insulation, HVAC pipe wraps, and automotive gasket substrates.
