Application of Wanma Macromolecule XLPE WMY-4201 S

Specification of WMY-4201 S for 0.6/1 kV utility and industrial distribution insulation begins with the silane moisture-curing mechanism rather than a peroxide decomposition route. The compound is pre-dried at 60 °C for 4–6 h when warehouse relative humidity has remained above 60%; residual moisture above 300 ppm produces micro-voiding and rough melt surfaces during extrusion. On a 65 mm barrier-screw extruder with L/D 25–30 and compression ratio 2.5–3.0, melt temperature is held at 140–175 °C because silanol condensation can initiate above 185 °C when free moisture is present. A pack sequence of 80/120/80 mesh ahead of the crosshead maintains head pressure between 15 MPa and 25 MPa, which supports layer uniformity over conductor sizes up to 50 mm². Copper conductors are preheated to 80–110 °C before entering the crosshead to limit shrink-back at the water trough; trough temperature is kept below 30 °C to freeze the outer skin before crosslinking. Hot-water curing at 85–95 °C for 4–8 h is adequate for wall thickness up to 1.0 mm. Ambient cure requires 7–10 days at 40–50 °C and 70–80% relative humidity before electrical testing.

Under IEC 60502-1:2021 and GB/T 12706.1-2020, the finished insulation must show hot-set elongation no greater than 175% and permanent set no greater than 15% at 200 °C under 0.2 MPa for 15 min using dumbbells tested according to IEC 60811-507. Tensile strength before aging shall be at least 12.5 MPa and elongation at break at least 200% according to IEC 60811-501; after 168 h at 135 °C, retention of tensile strength and elongation shall be at least 75%. Volume resistivity at 20 °C is specified at 1×10^14 Ω·cm minimum under IEC 62631-3-1. Long-term water immersion against IEC 60811-401 requires stable insulation resistance after 14 days at 85 °C in water. RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II and REACH SVHC obligations apply to the compound; halogens are absent by formulation, but a final low-smoke halogen-free sheath may still be required by project fire-performance class, since XLPE insulation alone does not confer IEC 60332-3-24 flame-spread resistance. This configuration feeds low-voltage aerial bundled cable, underground residential distribution cable, and motor feeder insulation where wet-service thermal stability is the controlling requirement.

What UV and Damp-Heat Conditions Govern PV Insulation?

In photovoltaic string cable built to EN 50618:2014 and IEC 62930:2017, WMY-4201 S is processed as the primary insulation beneath a halogen-free outer sheath; insulation wall for 2.5–6.0 mm² tinned-copper conductors typically falls between 0.5 mm and 0.7 mm. The layer must tolerate 1.5 kV DC system voltage, 120 °C dry service, 90 °C wet service, and 85 °C/85% relative humidity damp-heat exposure for at least 1000 h. Extrusion is performed on a 60 mm single-screw line with L/D 28 and barrier flight geometry; melt temperature is held between 145 °C and 170 °C because higher temperatures reduce the induction period for surface gel formation. Conductor preheat of 90–120 °C is required for tinned copper to maintain adhesion and to prevent intermittent copper-tin intermetallic growth during subsequent water cure. Continuous hot-water curing at 90 °C for 4–6 h at 0.6 mm wall yields a cure state sufficient for hot-set testing. Damp-heat retention requirements state that tensile strength and elongation at break after 1000 h at 85 °C/85% RH must remain at least 70% of initial values per EN 50618 Table 3. Ozone testing at 250 ppm, 40 °C, 72 h with 30% strain shall not produce cracks; UV aging per IEC 62930 for 720 h shall not reduce elongation below 50%. A room-temperature volume resistivity of at least 1×10^15 Ω·cm is required at 20 °C, and minimum insulation resistance of 0.25 MΩ·km must be retained after 96 h in 90 °C water. The material is unsuitable for direct burial without an extruded outer sheath because silane-crosslinked polyethylene has limited resistance to sharp backfill puncture and hydrocarbon contamination. Final products include solar farm string cables, module interconnects, and inverter DC cable assemblies exposed to high-humidity outdoor service.

ISO 6722 Thin-Wall Wire: Scorch Margin and Concentricity Limits

For automotive thin-wall primary wire, WMY-4201 S is extruded at wall thickness from 0.20 mm to 0.35 mm onto stranded bare-copper conductors of 0.5–1.5 mm². The main process conflict is between adequate cure and screw scorch, because thin-wall economics require line speeds from 300 m/min to 500 m/min on a 45 mm extruder with L/D 24 and low compression ratio 1.5–2.0. Melt temperature is limited to 165–185 °C at the die; head pressure should be maintained above 20 MPa to support concentricity of at least 80% around the circumference, measured by laser diameter gauges after the trough. A two-stage cure sequence is applied: initial surface crosslinking in an atmospheric steam tube at 90–100 °C for 2–4 s, followed by 48–72 h of ambient moisture exposure at 40 °C and 70% RH. ISO 6722:2023 Class B and Class C performance requires short-term aging at 150 °C for 240 h, long-term aging at 125 °C for 3000 h, and thermal overload at 175 °C for 6 h without cracking. Published scrape-load data for this specific compound on a 0.25 mm wall are limited; validation is therefore conducted on the production line against the vehicle-specific OEM test plan. Amine-based additives or amino-silane coupling agents must not be introduced into the same extruder because they accelerate premature silanol condensation. End products are engine-compartment primary wire, sensor leads, and door-harness conductors where PVC cannot survive 125 °C continuous conductor temperature.

XHHW-2 building wire processing for WMY-4201 S differs from low-voltage distribution applications because the insulation layer must be direct-burial and wet-location listed under UL 44, with 600 V rating and 90 °C maximum conductor temperature in wet or dry conditions. Insulation thickness is fixed by UL 44 Table 16 for each AWG size; for 14 AWG copper the minimum is 0.76 mm, increasing to 1.14 mm at 8 AWG and 2.03 mm at 2/0 AWG. The extrusion line is commonly a 90 mm single screw with L/D 30 and a balanced crosshead; melt temperature should be 145–175 °C, and the conductor is preheated to 100–120 °C to prevent insulation shrink-back at terminations. Water-bath crosslinking at 80–90 °C for 6–10 h is used for wall thickness above 1.0 mm because moisture diffusion through a thick silane-crosslinked wall is rate-limiting; incomplete cure is detected by hot-set permanent set values above 30%. Finished wire must pass the UL 44 cold bend at -40 °C, crush resistance, and long-term insulation resistance in 75 °C water. Flame performance is assessed per UL 44 for single conductors; bundles or cable trays require an additional outer jacket meeting UL 2556 VW-1 or IEEE 1202. This grade does not provide a UL 44 125 °C rating and should not be substituted in applications requiring 125 °C XLPE insulation without supplementary service testing. The terminal products are wet-location building wire, service entrance cable insulation, and industrial feeder conductor insulation where 90 °C thermal class is specified.

When Appliance Wiring Demands 105 °C–125 °C Internal Harness Insulation

For internal harnesses in appliances, WM-Y-4201 S is used as a single extruded silane-crosslinked polyethylene insulation under appliance wiring material styles such as 3266 and 3271 within UL 758. Wall thickness from 0.23 mm to 0.76 mm is typical for 22–14 AWG stranded copper. The process uses a 40 mm extruder with L/D 22–25, and screw speed is matched to 100–300 m/min; melt temperature should not exceed 175 °C. Cure is ambient for 3–5 days at 23 °C/50% RH or 24 h at 80 °C/90% RH in a humidity chamber. The material is suitable for 105 °C rated AWM thermal aging; for 125 °C service, the end-product insulation must be evaluated against UL 758 thermal aging and the final device standard. The compound is not inherently resistant to hot transformer oil or aggressive aromatic ester oils; secondary jacketing is required in those environments. Final products include motor lead wires, appliance internal harness conductors, and pump motor pigtail insulation where moisture-resistant thermal performance is required but hydrocarbon exposure is low.

Damp Industrial Plant Cores Limit Moisture Migration During Wet Service

WMY-4201 S is applied as insulation for twisted pairs and triads in 300/500 V instrumentation and control cable where 70 °C PVC insulation has inadequate wet-heat performance. Conductors are 0.5–2.5 mm² stranded copper; insulation wall is 0.4–0.6 mm. Extrusion is performed on a 45–60 mm high-speed line with conductor preheat at 100 °C and melt temperature between 150 °C and 175 °C. Water curing at 85 °C for 3–5 h is followed by pair twisting with lay lengths of 40–80 mm, overall screening, and low-smoke halogen-free sheathing. Finished cables are evaluated against IEC 60332-1-2 for vertical flame propagation, IEC 61034-2 for smoke density, and IEC 60754-2 for halogen acid gas content. The insulation itself is halogen-free, but fire performance is dominated by the sheath construction and must be tested on the complete cable. This grade is not an EPR replacement where oil resistance and high dynamic flex fatigue are specified; published data for specific dynamic flex configurations is limited. End products are process-plant instrument cables, damp-environment control cables, and low-speed robotic interconnect cores where moisture migration into the insulation is the primary failure mechanism.
