Versalis HDPE MQ70 is an injection-moulding high-density polyethylene grade with a nominal melt flow rate of 7.0 g/10 min at 190 °C/2.16 kg and a nominal density of 0.960 g/cm³ when tested to ISO 1133-1:2022 and ISO 1183-1:2019. The scenarios below are restricted to production sectors in which the grade is employed as a primary moulding resin, including rigid food-contact packaging, closure systems, returnable logistics articles, industrial pails, institutional housewares, and personal care dispensing components. Each scenario states the applicable regulatory references, quantified addition ratios, process parameters that control mould filling and post-mould dimensional stability, and the terminal article categories produced on industrial lines.
Dairy cups and tubs are injection-moulded from HDPE MQ70 at a melt temperature of 220–240 °C and a mould-surface temperature of 10–25 °C, with hydraulic accumulator injection speeds maintained in the range of 150–250 mm/s to prevent short shots and jetting in 0.40–0.65 mm wall sections. The governing compliance requirements for direct dairy contact are Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, where overall migration must remain below 10 mg/dm² under the assigned aqueous and acidic simulant conditions, and FDA 21 CFR §177.1520(c) 2.2 for olefin polymers used with food types III, IV, and VII. In the moulding cell, the formulation is maintained at 100 parts by weight virgin HDPE MQ70; white or tinted color masterbatch based on a polyethylene carrier is metered at 1.5–2.5 wt%, and process-lubricant masterbatch is added at 0.3–0.7 wt% only when required for demoulding. Sprues, runners, and edge trim produced from the same compliant lot are reintroduced at up to 20 wt% of total shot mass under a closed-loop recycling programme validated to EC No 2023/2006. Production-scale tools are normally hot-runner systems with 8–24 cavities, valve-gate actuation, and venting gaps of 0.02–0.05 mm; clamping force is sized at 4–6 kN/cm² of projected area and cooling time is set to achieve part ejection below 65 °C. Terminal products include yogurt cups, dairy dessert cups, single-serve drink cups, and margarine tubs with sidewall thicknesses of 0.40–0.65 mm, and the moulded articles are not considered suitable for hot-fill temperatures above 65 °C or for extended freezer use below −20 °C without additional impact modification.
In closure manufacturing cells configured with 96- to 128-cavity hot-runner tools, HDPE MQ70 is selected for still-water, dairy, and non-carbonated beverage closures because its melt-flow-rate stability at 7.0 g/10 min supports cavity-to-cavity filling repeatability across multi-drop manifolds and reduces gate-stringing in negative-angle bridge seals. The applicable compliance framework includes FDA 21 CFR §177.1520(c) 2.2, Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, and current good manufacturing practice under EC No 2023/2006 for food-contact plastic articles. Formulation for tamper-evident beverage closures consists of 96.0–98.0 wt% HDPE MQ70, slip-agent masterbatch at 1.0–2.0 wt% to reduce cap-application torque without exceeding the migration budget of the food-contact declaration, and color masterbatch at 1.0–3.0 wt%; process-generated trimmings and reject caps are re-ground and metered into the feed throat at 10–20 wt% after metal separation and melt filtration through a 60–100 mesh screen pack. Moulding is performed at a barrel profile of 190–240 °C, mould temperature of 10–25 °C, injection pressure of 80–120 MPa, and clamping-force availability of 3–5 kN/cm² of projected area. Dimensional control of the tamper-evident band and bridge webs requires holding pressure and cooling time to limit post-mould shrinkage to 2.0–2.5% across the cap diameter; ejection is normally interrupted if part temperature exceeds 60 °C. Terminal products include 28 mm and 30 mm still-water closures, dairy-cap push-pull fitments, tamper-evident bands, and screw caps for non-carbonated beverages, all of which are subject to application-torque testing according to ASTM D2063 and leakage testing after capping.
Load-bearing returnable crates for beverage distribution are produced from HDPE MQ70 with closed-loop regrind contents up to 30 wt% only when the regrind stream is monitored for melt-flow-rate shift, ash content, and oxidative degradation; the virgin fraction remains 70–80 wt%, and the combined formulation includes UV-stabilizer masterbatch at 1.5–3.0 wt% and antioxidant masterbatch at 0.2–0.5 wt%. The governing compliance references are REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU for heavy-metal restrictions, while mechanical acceptance testing follows ISO 12048 compression testing of filled crates and ISO 6603-2 instrumented puncture impact at −20 °C. In production, thick-section crate tools with wall thicknesses of 2.5–4.0 mm are run on injection moulding machines with clamping force from 600 to 1,200 tonnes, barrel temperatures of 230–250 °C, and mould temperatures of 15–30 °C; multiple submarine or hot-tip gates are balanced to maintain a flow-length-to-thickness ratio below 150:1. The addition of regrind above 30 wt% is not recommended for crates with load-rated bottom grids because the corresponding loss in environmental stress-cracking resistance can reduce the number of return trips before webbing cracks initiate between ventilation slots. Published data for this specific crate-tool configuration is limited above that regrind loading; therefore, production validation requires instrumented puncture testing on moulded specimens according to ISO 6603-2. Terminal products comprise beer-crate bottom shells, dairy-crate frames, ventilated produce crates, and returnable logistics totes with load ratings up to 25 kg in stacked configurations, and outdoor service life is dependent on stabilizer package retention rather than on the polymer base alone.
Injection speed in 10–25 L open-top pail production is limited by gate blush, weld-line strength at the handle lugs, and the onset of flow hesitation along the pail sidewall when the melt pressure at the end of fill falls below 35 MPa. HDPE MQ70 is processed at a melt temperature of 220–250 °C and a mould temperature of 15–30 °C, with injection speeds typically capped between 80 and 150 mm/s for single-cavity or two-cavity pail tools. The applicable compliance framework for pails used to transport non-hazardous liquid foods is Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR §177.1520(c) 2.2; pails intended for dangerous goods must additionally pass UN type-approval drop and stacking tests under ADR/RID/IMDG packaging instructions, including drop impact at −18 °C and hydraulic pressure retention of side seams. Formulation for industrial pails is normally 97.0–99.0 wt% HDPE MQ70, with color masterbatch at 1.0–3.0 wt%; clean in-house regrind from rejected pails may replace up to 20 wt% of virgin material only after sustained pressure and leakage testing confirms equivalent weld-line integrity. The production equipment includes two-platen machines with clamp force between 500 and 1,600 tonnes, cold or hot runner systems with a central sprue and four to eight hot drops, and core cooling circuits that maintain part ejection below 60 °C. Terminal products include 10 L, 15 L, and 25 L open-top pails, lid-seating rims, and tamper-evident pail handles for non-carbonated liquid and powder filling.
For industrial and institutional houseware lines operating two-platen injection moulding machines with clamp force between 250 and 800 tonnes, the grade is dispensed into open storage container moulds at a melt temperature of 210–240 °C and a mould temperature of 15–30 °C, producing opaque rigid articles with sidewall thicknesses between 1.5 and 3.0 mm. The relevant conformity framework is REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and, where the container is intended for repeated kitchen use, FDA 21 CFR §177.1520(c) 2.2 and Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011. The dry-blend formulation is kept at 100 parts by weight HDPE MQ70 plus color masterbatch at 2.0–4.0 wt%; process regrind from shredded gates and side walls is added at up to 25 wt% for opaque houseware grades, provided that the regrind is dried below 0.05% surface moisture and pneumatically conveyed through metal separation. Processing uses single-cavity or multi-cavity cold-runner tools with edge gates, injection pressure of 80–110 MPa, and cooling times of 12–30 s depending on wall thickness. Terminal products include institutional storage boxes, tote bins for healthcare linen handling, stackable utility containers, and non-food drawer organisers, all of which are subject to dimensional stability checks after 48 h atmospheric conditioning at 23 °C/50% RH according to ISO 291.

Dispensing closures for personal care formulations are moulded from HDPE MQ70 when the brand specification demands a low residual odor, low extractables profile, and consistent hinge flex in flip-top caps. The governing compliance references are EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 for cosmetic product packaging compatibility, REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 for substances in articles, and FDA 21 CFR §177.1520 if the same closure family is used in contact with aqueous cosmetic emulsions. The formulation is 96.0–98.5 wt% HDPE MQ70, with color masterbatch at 0.8–2.0 wt% and an external lubricant masterbatch at 0.5–1.5 wt%; process regrind from runner systems and rejected caps is limited to 15 wt% of shot mass to avoid batch-to-batch variation in hinge stress-whitening. Moulding is performed on high-cavitation injection machines with 32–64 cavities, hot-runner valve gates, melt temperature of 210–240 °C, mould temperature of 15–30 °C, and clamp force of 3–5 kN/cm² of projected area. The critical boundary condition is organoleptic neutrality: the use of external post-consumer recycled material is excluded, and masterbatch carriers must be based on polyethylene that conforms to the same food-contact or cosmetic-contact declaration as the base resin. Terminal products include flip-top dispensing caps for shampoos and lotion tubes, screw overcaps for bottle pumps, and hinge-cap assemblies for personal care tubes.
