    Application of Versalis HDPE ML70

Open-top pails injection-moulded from Versalis HDPE ML70 are utilised in UN-certified packaging for liquid detergents, water-based adhesives, pigment dispersions, and non-flammable chemical intermediates. The resin is supplied with a melt flow rate of 7 g/10 min at 190°C/2.16 kg per ISO 1133-1:2022 and density of 0.960 g/cm³ per ISO 1183-1:2019. Conversion takes place on hydraulic injection-moulding machines with clamp force between 250 t and 450 t for pail capacities from 5 L to 25 L; a general-purpose screw with L/D 20:1 to 24:1 and compression ratio 2.2:1 to 2.8:1 is standard. Melt temperature is maintained at 230°C to 250°C, mould temperature at 10°C to 25°C, holding pressure at 400 bar to 600 bar, back pressure at 5 bar to 10 bar, hot-runner valve gate diameter at 1.2 mm to 1.8 mm, injection velocity at 30 mm/s to 80 mm/s, and cooling time at 10 s to 20 s. The standard formulation is 80 wt% virgin ML70 with 20 wt% post-industrial regrind from the same pail production line; colour masterbatch is dosed at 2.0 wt% to 2.5 wt%. For outdoor chemical storage, a HALS/UV stabiliser masterbatch is incorporated at 0.3 wt% to 0.5 wt%, and carbon black masterbatch is used at 2.0 wt% for UV-resistant non-food pails. The compliance path depends on the filling substance: dangerous goods pails are qualified against ADR 6.1.1 and IMDG Code 6.1, with drop testing per ISO 2248 and stacking per ISO 2234 or ISO 12048. Food-contact pails are tested under EU 10/2011 with an overall migration limit of 10 mg/dm² per Article 12, and GMP compliance per EC 2023/2006 Annex I. Depending on the lid design, pail rim ovality is held below 0.5 mm to maintain sealing force under stack load. Production-scale inspection has linked ovality above 0.8 mm to intermittent lid leakage after conditioning at −18°C, so rim roundness is treated as a critical release variable. The material is not recommended for continuous immersion in strong oxidising acids at elevated temperature; chemical compatibility is validated for each fill substance. Terminal finished product types are 5 L to 25 L open-top pails, tamper-evident injection-moulded lids, and bung-type closures for liquid chemical packs.

Does ML70 Maintain Dimensional Stability in High-Cavitation Closure Tooling?

Closure conversion with ML70 is concentrated in still water and dairy beverage caps where shot weights range from 2.0 g to 3.5 g and hot-runner moulds of 32 to 64 cavities demand consistent melt front progression. The formulation is 98 wt% virgin ML70, 1.0 wt% to 2.0 wt% colour masterbatch, and 0.5 wt% to 1.0 wt% erucamide slip concentrate; post-consumer regrind is excluded from contact-critical closures unless the converter validates migration and organoleptic performance under European Union migration rules. The injection process uses melt temperatures of 240°C to 260°C, mould temperatures of 8°C to 18°C, holding pressure of 300 bar to 500 bar, holding time of 0.5 s to 1.2 s, and cycle time of 5 s to 8 s. Gate vestige height and sink depth are controlled below 0.05 mm because the top sealing surface of a cap has a direct effect on leakage and microbial ingress. For carbonated soft-drink closures, monolayer HDPE structures are normally supplemented with an oxygen/CO2 barrier liner; published ML70-specific gas transmission data for carbonated systems are limited, so converters run pressure-loss validation under proprietary shelf-life protocols. Compliance for food-contact closures is established by EU 10/2011, including the 10 mg/dm² overall migration limit, FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c), and EC 2023/2006 GMP. A compatibility limitation exists with polypropylene contamination: PP levels above 2 wt% in recycled feedstock can reduce cap flexibility and initiate stress cracking around the hinge and tamper-evident band. Terminal products include 28 mm and 38 mm tamper-evident closures for still water, UHT milk, and cold-fill dairy beverages, along with integral flip-top dispensing caps.

In returnable logistics crates, the limiting variable is cold-temperature drop impact rather than seal-surface flatness. The formulation is 75 wt% virgin ML70, 25 wt% clean internal regrind, 2.0 wt% to 3.0 wt% colour masterbatch, and 0.3 wt% to 0.5 wt% HALS/UV masterbatch for outdoor crate service. The processing window is wider than closures: clamp force from 300 t to 800 t, melt temperature 210°C to 240°C, mould temperature 10°C to 20°C, holding pressure 350 bar to 550 bar, and cooling time driven by wall thickness of 2.5 mm to 4.0 mm. Batch-to-batch variance is caused mainly by regrind proportion and moisture; pre-drying is not required below 60% relative humidity, but condensation in outdoor silos can produce surface porosity in thick sections. Compliance for distribution crates is verified by ISO 2248 vertical impact and ISO 12048 compression/stacking; for crates intended for direct food contact, EU 10/2011 and EC 2023/2006 apply. At wall thickness above 4.0 mm, sink marks and internal voids become visible at rib intersections; converters often reduce nominal wall to 3.2 mm and use U-shaped ribs to preserve stack load. Published data for ML70-specific outdoor weathering are limited, so outdoor service life is validated by converter field trials after the selected HALS package is compounded. Terminal products are stackable bottle crates, bakery trays, vegetable field bins, and collapsible agricultural distribution crates.

Thin-Wall Food Tub Stacking Strength at −25°C Frozen Storage

When thin-wall food tubs are frozen to −25°C, acceptance is based on notched Charpy impact resistance rather than melt flow alone. The formulation for dairy spread, ice cream, and margarine tubs is 96 wt% virgin ML70 and 4 wt% white masterbatch; regrind from trimmed sprues can be maintained up to 20 wt%, provided the material is kept free of polypropylene contamination. This is a high-speed injection-moulding process on machines with clamp force 150 t to 350 t, injection speed 150 mm/s to 350 mm/s, melt temperature 220°C to 245°C, mould temperature 12°C to 20°C, and cycle time 6 s to 10 s. Moulds with 2 to 8 cavities and hot-runner valve gates are common; wall thickness is held between 0.8 mm and 1.2 mm to balance top-load strength and material consumption. Batch release includes notched Charpy impact testing per ISO 179-1/1eA at −25°C and tensile yield stress per ISO 527-2; the critical failure mode is base crack initiation when the filled tub is dropped from 1.2 m at frozen temperature. Food-contact compliance is established by EU 10/2011 with the 10 mg/dm² overall migration limit, FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c), and EC 2023/2006 GMP. The terminal products are 150 mL to 1000 mL thin-wall dairy dessert tubs, ice cream containers, and press-in closures where the same ML70 grade is used for the lid.

Industrial pallet conversion with ML70 is a large-shot injection-moulding discipline in which sequential valve-gated filling prevents premature freeze-off and weld-line failure. The formulation is 70 wt% virgin ML70 and 30 wt% pelletised post-consumer HDPE regrind; colour masterbatch is added at 2.0 wt%, and an antioxidant masterbatch is used at 0.3 wt% to 0.5 wt% where recycled content increases oxidation risk. The process requires clamp force of 1000 t to 1800 t, shot weight 15 kg to 35 kg, melt temperature 220°C to 240°C, mould temperature 10°C to 18°C, holding pressure 300 bar to 500 bar, holding time 10 s to 20 s, and cooling time 60 s to 120 s. Cycle time is 120 s to 210 s for an integral runnerless mould with 8 to 12 sequential hot-runner valve gates. Warpage in pallets is controlled by alternating gate opening time and adjusting pack pressure; a flatness deviation above 2.0 mm across a 1200 mm span is typically rejected because it compromises racking performance. Compliance is tested under ISO 8611-1 for racking, bending, and impact loads, with dimensional compatibility per ISO 6780. REACH EC 1907/2006 Annex XVII applies to recycled content; heavy-metal screening and SVHC confirmation are necessary for export. Published ML70-specific data for PCR-rich industrial pallets are limited, so shelf-load ratings are converter-validated. Terminal products are 1200 mm × 1000 mm flat export pallets, rackable warehouse pallets, and heavy-duty dunnage platforms.

Household Storage and Municipal Waste Container Tolerances

Household storage articles and municipal waste containers are the least constrained application band because structural loads are lower than in pallets or crates, but the dimensional repeatability of ML70 supports thin-wall box sidewalls without excessive sink. The formulation is 100 wt% virgin ML70 or 80 wt% virgin with 20 wt% post-industrial regrind; colour masterbatch is dosed at 2.0 wt% to 4.0 wt%, and an antistatic masterbatch is used at 0.1 wt% to 0.3 wt% only when dust-sensitive electronics storage is involved. Processing is carried out on machines with clamp force 120 t to 250 t, melt temperature 220°C to 240°C, mould temperature 10°C to 20°C, and cycle time 15 s to 30 s. The main quality limit is rectangular sidewall warp; holding pressure is set between 300 bar and 450 bar, and cooling time is increased until ejection temperature is below 70°C to prevent post-mould distortion. Compliance for general articles is under REACH EC 1907/2006 Annex XVII; if the storage box is marketed as a toy or is child-appealing, EN 71-3 migration limits for elements apply. Terminal products include stackable household storage boxes, under-bed containers, refuse bins up to 120 L, and municipal waste container lids where low-temperature impact is validated per ISO 179-1/1eA at −25°C.
