Not regulated for transport. Store cool and dry; avoid heat, sunlight, moisture, contamination, and static discharge. Keep packages closed and labeled.
Storage Store Versalis HDPE BB 82 in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat, sparks, and open flames. Keep bags or containers closed to prevent moisture, dust, and contamination. Avoid prolonged UV exposure and store on pallets, stacked safely. Maintain good housekeeping; use appropriate PPE when handling. No special ventilation is normally required.
Shelf Life Versalis HDPE BB 82 has a shelf life of 24 months when stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area.
Application of Versalis HDPE BB 82

Agrochemical packagings impose a combined requirement of low-shear melt strength for parison stability and high environmental stress crack resistance after filling with xylene-containing emulsifiable concentrates. In monolayer extrusion blow molding, Versalis HDPE BB 82 is processed at a dry-blend formulation of 100 phr resin, 1.8–2.5 wt% additive-loaded color concentrate, and 0.05–0.12 phr hindered phenolic processing stabilizer. The grade has nominal density 0.954 g/cm³ by ISO 1183-1 and melt flow rate 0.25 g/10 min by ISO 1133-1. The extruder is a grooved-feed single-screw machine with 25:1 L/D and a barrier screw; barrel temperature profile is held from 180°C to 210°C, head temperature at 205–215°C, and melt temperature measured at 200–215°C. Die gap is set to 2.4–3.0 mm for a 20 L parison weight of 1.1–1.3 kg; blow pressure is 0.75–0.85 MPa and mold temperature is 12–20°C to limit differential shrinkage caused by mold-side versus blow-side cooling gradients. The terminal products are 10 L, 20 L, and 25 L UN 3H1 jerricans used for emulsifiable concentrates, suspension concentrates, and microemulsion crop-protection formulations. Type qualification is executed according to UN Model Regulations Chapter 6.1.5.2, including drop testing at 1.2 m for Packing Group II after conditioning at -18°C, leakproofness at 30 kPa internal air pressure, hydraulic pressure 100 kPa for 30 min, and stacking at 40°C for 28 days.

What ESCR Margin Is Required for Food-Contact Dairy Bottles at 0.6 mm Nominal Sidewall Thickness?

In monolayer dairy and edible-oil bottle lines, the dosage of Versalis HDPE BB 82 is 100 phr, with 3.0–4.0 wt% TiO₂ white masterbatch and, where closures require lower removal torque, 0.05–0.10 wt% erucamide slip concentrate. The food-contact status depends on the resin’s compliance with US FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c), Item 3.2a for high-density polyethylenes with density at or above 0.94 g/cm³, and with EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, Annex I, including overall migration testing under Annex III conditions selected for the food type. The production process uses a shuttle blow molder with 24:1 L/D single-screw extruder, barrel profile 185–205°C, head temperature 195–205°C, parison programming with 0.55–0.65 mm minimum target sidewall, and mold temperature 10–20°C. Terminal product types are 500 mL, 1 L, and 2 L monolayer HDPE bottles for pasteurized milk, UHT milk, and edible oil. The low MFR of 0.25 g/10 min by ISO 1133-1 extends parison hang time for handleware molds but limits achievable cycle time when mold cooling time falls below 9 s. Amine-based antistatic additives should not be used in dairy-contact layers because they can contribute to organoleptic migration defects.

Where the end-use fluid contains greater than 10% aromatic or halogenated solvent, monolayer BB 82 alone is not specified without a further barrier step. Three-layer coextrusion blow molding for solvent-resistant containers uses BB 82 as structural skins. In a typical three-layer structure, the outer and inner skins are dry-blended from 71 wt% BB 82, 20 wt% plant regrind of the same structure, 6 wt% maleic anhydride-grafted HDPE tie concentrate, and 3 wt% black masterbatch; the barrier core is polyamide at 5–8 wt% of total container mass. HDPE skins are processed on 25:1 L/D barrier screws at 210–220°C; polyamide core is processed on 30:1 L/D screw at 235–250°C; die head temperature is 220–230°C. Mold cooling at 10–15°C is used to stabilize layer distribution. Terminal products are 1 L, 5 L, and 20 L containers for paint thinner, brake cleaner concentrate, aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents, and mildly aggressive cleaning solvents. Packagings are certified as UN 3H1 where they carry dangerous goods; barrier performance is measured by weight loss after 28 days at 40°C according to ASTM D2684. Inline fluorination with 0.1–1.0% F₂ in N₂ is an alternative, but fluorinated scrap must not be mixed into non-fluorinated regrind because the fluorine-modified surface can release acid gas during subsequent melt processing.

Post-Consumer Recyclate Let-Down and Oxidative Induction Time Stability

Non-food detergent and household chemical bottles are the most common route for incorporating post-consumer recyclate into BB 82. The formulation uses 70–85 wt% virgin BB 82, 15–30 wt% high-density polyethylene PCR, and 1.0–2.0 wt% restabilization masterbatch. Before dosing, PCR is dried at 80°C for 4 h when residual moisture exceeds 0.02 wt%. The melt is processed on a vented 30:1 L/D compounding extruder with 80–120 mesh screen pack and gear pump, or directly converted on a blow molder fitted with a melt filter and vacuum venting. Because oxidative history of PCR reduces oxidative induction time measured by ASTM D3895 at 200°C, restabilization is adjusted until OIT exceeds 20 min. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, so plant-specific melt-flow and OIT correlation is required before raising PCR content above 20 wt%. Terminal products are 750 mL to 5 L non-food detergent, fabric softener, and automotive detailing product bottles. The relevant compliance reference for recycled content is EN 15343 for plastics recycling traceability and EU Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 REACH for final article substances.

Impact Resistance at -20°C as a Function of Parison Swell and Pinch-Off Geometry

Automotive windshield washer reservoirs and coolant overflow bottles made from Versalis HDPE BB 82 require low-temperature ductility after pinch-off. The formulation is 100 phr BB 82, 2.0–2.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch, and 0.03–0.08 phr process aid. The accumulator-head blow molder employs a 30:1 L/D barrier screw, melt temperature 200–220°C, die gap 2.0–3.0 mm, and blow pressure 0.8–1.0 MPa. Terminal parts include 4.5 L washer reservoirs and 1.5 L coolant overflow bottles. In low-temperature qualification, sidewall Charpy impact according to ISO 179-1/1eA at -20°C generally exceeds 6 kJ/m²; however, the pinch-off weld can reduce impact by 30–50%, so tooling should maintain pinch-off land angle 20–30° and flash pocket depth 0.5–1.0 mm. Multiaxial impact is measured according to ASTM D3763 at -20°C; additional customer specifications may require no brittle split after 1.0 m drop at -20°C to concrete and no leakage after heat aging at 100°C for 168 h.

Laundry detergent bottle lines running 750 mL and 1 L non-food containers use Versalis HDPE BB 82 at 100 phr with 2.5–3.0 wt% color masterbatch, processed on a 24:1 L/D shuttle blow molder at 190–210°C melt temperature and 0.75–0.85 MPa blow pressure, and the resulting articles are placed on the EU market under Detergents Regulation (EC) No 648/2004.
