Application of Versalis Clearflex MDPE RA140 U

In rotational moulding of outdoor water storage tanks ranging from 500 L to 10,000 L, the powder of Clearflex MDPE RA140 U is dry blended with 1.0–3.0 wt% colour masterbatch and charged into a fabricated steel or cast aluminium mould after the mould surface reaches 280–300 °C. The shot weight is calculated from the required mean wall thickness of 6.0–9.0 mm, multiplied by the nominal density of 0.940 g/cm³ as determined to ISO 1183-1:2019 and a 1.02 flash and trim factor. The primary/secondary rotation ratio is held at 4:1, with the major axis at 6–8 rpm and the minor axis at 1.5–2.0 rpm, while the peak internal air temperature is controlled between 190 °C and 205 °C and verified by an infrared pyrometer or thermocouple inserted through the vent tube. Cooling is staged: forced air for 8–12 min, then water mist at an air-to-water transition temperature of 90–110 °C, followed by ambient air to demould below 70 °C. The melt flow rate of 4.0 g/10 min at 190 °C/2.16 kg under ISO 1133-1:2022 permits the powder to sinter and densify without excessive porosity, but oven set points above 320 °C for more than 10 min produce oxidative discolouration and reduce environmental stress crack resistance in the inner surface layer. For potable water service, resin approval is not transferable to the finished tank; NSF/ANSI 61 or EU 2020/2184 compliance is obtained on the finished article with the specific antioxidant and pigment package fixed in the production lot.

In rainwater harvesting tanks, the exposed outer surface relies on the UV-stabilised formulation of RA140 U, and accelerated weathering of black, green, or grey moulded parts is commonly assessed by ISO 4892-2:2013 method A cycle 1 with xenon-arc irradiance at 0.51 W/m²/nm at 340 nm, followed by colour difference measurement under ISO 7724-3. The polyethylene matrix of this grade is not recommended for continuous service with chlorinated solvents, strong oxidising acids, or high-aromatic hydrocarbon streams, because wall swelling increases above 45 °C and tensile integrity declines in localised weld regions. Water absorption of compression-moulded sheet within 24 h is below 0.02 % when tested to ISO 62:2008, which supports insert retention and fitting seal stability in humid service. Pre-drying of the powder is generally unnecessary at relative humidity below 70 %, but condensed surface moisture from cold storage must be allowed to equilibrate before charging to avoid pinholes in thick bosses.

Why Does a 0.940 g/cm³ Density Band Matter for Agrochemical Tank Resistance?

At 0.940 g/cm³, the crystallinity of Clearflex MDPE RA140 U is lower than HDPE but higher than LLDPE, producing an environmental stress crack resistance that the manufacturer reports as an F50 value exceeding 1,000 h under ASTM D1693-15a, Condition B, 100 % Igepal CO-630 at 50 °C. This characteristic is operationally significant for rotationally moulded agricultural sprayer tanks and pesticide nurse tanks because weld lines, corner radii, and threaded insert bosses are the most probable crack initiation points when the tank holds ester-based solvents or surfactant-loaded formulations. The powder is dry mixed with 0.10–0.35 phr hindered amine light stabiliser concentrate only when the base stabilisation is insufficient for a specific tank mix, and the formulation is screened in a 30-day immersion test at 40 °C using the commercial chemical mixture because ASTM D1693-15a cannot predict all solvent systems. In moulding, a mean wall thickness of 4.0–6.5 mm is used for tanks up to 800 L; the powder is ground to 35–60 mesh (250–500 µm), and vent ports are sized at 12–20 mm to prevent pressure differentials during cooling. The mould rotates at 6–8 rpm on the primary axis and 1.5–2.0 rpm on the secondary axis to avoid powder bridging in narrow tank bodies, and demoulding is delayed until the surface temperature falls below 70 °C to maintain threaded fitting seal geometry. Regulatory acceptance for crop protection storage is application-specific; post-moulding drop, hydraulic pressure, and leakproofness tests are functions of wall consistency and boss design, not resin grade alone, and published data for this specific grade with proprietary pesticide formulations is limited.

Secondary Containment Bunds and Spill Pallet Rim Stiffness

Rotational moulding of four-drum spill pallets and process area bunds uses 5.5–8.0 mm nominal walls to achieve a static load capacity of 1,250 kg per pallet when the underside is designed with fully welded kiss-off ribs at 300–400 mm pitch. Clearflex MDPE RA140 U is selected because the density of 0.940 g/cm³ balances flexural stiffness with sufficient low-temperature ductility to resist fork tine strikes at −20 °C; however, finished-pallet impact performance is verified by the specific drop method required by local spill containment standards rather than by resin-level Izod values. Sump capacity is calculated to meet 110 % of the largest stored container or 25 % of total stored volume for outdoor installations, and the mould is fitted with removable steel cores for drain ports and threaded insert bosses. The peak internal air temperature is controlled at 205–210 °C, measured through the vent, to ensure complete densification at the deepest rib intersections. Chemical resistance is generally suitable for dilute acids, alkalis, and oils at ambient temperature, but the bund is not suitable for continuous contact with concentrated nitric acid or ketone-containing wastes above 35 °C; a 90-day immersion test under ISO 175:2010 with the actual waste mixture is required before service.

A different processing envelope governs playground panels and structural play equipment because the mould is removed from the oven at a lower peak internal air temperature than water tanks. Outdoor playground components such as slides, activity panels, and tunnel sections are rotationally moulded with wall thicknesses of 6.0–12.0 mm, and the mould is coated with a silicone-based release agent and preheated to 290–310 °C. The rotation sequence includes a faster secondary-axis reversal every 30–45 s to distribute powder into complex undercuts. After sintering, the temperature is held between 190 °C and 200 °C for 4–6 min to reduce pinhole formation, then cooled under forced air at a controlled rate of 0.5–1.0 °C/s until the surface reaches 80 °C. Colour retention is controlled by 2.0–4.0 wt% of a lightfast pigment concentrate with a particle size not exceeding 75 µm; the UV package of the base resin governs mass loss and surface microcracking, not tint strength. Load-bearing components must satisfy static and dynamic load requirements of EN 1176-1:2017, and finished parts are subjected to a fall test from 1.5 m onto a concrete substrate at 0 °C to detect brittle failure. Published data for this grade under full EN 1176 impact sequences is limited; the test is normally performed on the moulded component rather than on compression-moulded plaques. Inserts for bolts are thermally isolated from the mould surface and are specified as stainless steel or brass to prevent local overcooling, void formation, and galvanic corrosion at the fastener boss.

Marine buoyancy modules require a 4:1 primary-to-secondary rotation ratio before foam filling

MDPE RA140 U is used in rotationally moulded buoy shells, flotation collars, and pontoon sections because the cooled polyethylene shell with a wall thickness of 8.0–15.0 mm has a density below water and can be filled with a two-component rigid closed-cell polyurethane foam of free-rise density 35–50 kg/m³. The foam is dispensed at 20–30 °C and mixed at a 1:1 volume ratio to keep exothermic peak temperature below 105 °C, which prevents softening of the inner polyethylene surface. The mould is rotated at 6–8 rpm on the primary axis and 1.5–2.0 rpm on the secondary axis, with vent ports of 10–15 mm diameter positioned at the highest point of the mould to release off-gases. The peak melting temperature of 126 °C, measured by differential scanning calorimetry to ISO 11357-3:2018, defines the outer limit for hot-water buoyancy testing, and dark-painted parts should not be used unless the paint system includes an IR-reflective pigment because black hull temperatures above 70 °C in direct sunlight can cause dimensional creep. Salt spray fog exposure per ISO 9227:2022 does not measurably reduce tensile elongation, but moulded-in metal lifting eyes must be isolated from the polyethylene with a reinforced boss of at least 2.5 times the nominal wall thickness to prevent point loading. In foam-filled service, any puncture in the shell allows water to migrate into the open-cell cut surfaces of the foam; the outer shell is inspected after impact and repaired with a hot-air weld patch made from the same resin grade, not a dissimilar HDPE, to ensure fusion compatibility.

When the same powder grade is diverted into material handling bins and process vessels, the wall thickness is reduced to 3.5–5.5 mm for vessels up to 300 L, and the powder is charged after the mould reaches 270–290 °C. The peak internal air temperature should not exceed 195 °C because thin walls are more susceptible to air-oxidation at the inner surface. The melt flow rate of 4.0 g/10 min at 190 °C/2.16 kg permits short oven cycles of 12–18 min for simple cylindrical shapes, but the powder is not suitable for sections below 3.0 mm in long draw areas because the melt front may not fully coalesce before cooling. Bins used in food processing require compliance with EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 depending on the intended market, and the certification is maintained on the finished article with the specific masterbatch and processing conditions; no permanent antistatic or antifog additive should be added without repeating migration testing to EU 10/2011 Annex V. Dynamic loading is evaluated by a repeated drop test from 1.2 m onto a concrete floor at −10 °C using a filled container, which reveals incomplete fusion at the bottom corner more reliably than density measurements alone. Discharge valve inserts are placed after the powder begins to adhere to the inner surface but before the molten layer exceeds 2 mm, preventing insert displacement while ensuring complete encapsulation.
