Sheet extrusion of Clearflex MDPE H&T FHH 508 into geomembrane panels is carried out on single-screw extruders with a barrier screw geometry and an L/D ratio ≥ 30:1. Melt temperature is held between 200 °C and 230 °C, while calendering roll temperatures are set between 60 °C and 90 °C to limit surface oxidation and stabilise gauge uniformity across a 1.0–2.5 mm sheet. Thickness control is verified against ISO 4593, and tensile yield and elongation are measured under ISO 527-3 at 23 °C and 50 mm/min. The converter should not exceed the supplier maximum processing temperature because MDPE geomembrane compounds containing carbon black can undergo oxidative chain scission; oxidative induction time is checked by ASTM D3895 at 200 °C. Carbon black dispersion is checked by ISO 18553 on microtomed sections, with rejection of agglomerates larger than 30 µm because poorly dispersed carbon black creates stress concentrations and reduces weld peel stability. Environmental stress-crack resistance is evaluated by ASTM D1693 Condition B in 10 % Igepal CO-630 at 50 °C, with reporting of F20 values rather than a single pass/fail datum. Regrind addition is limited to 20 wt% unless internal qualification confirms that seam integrity and melt flow stability remain within specification. Published data for FHH 508-specific OIT values is limited, so batch lot certificates must be reviewed before extrusion starts.
Hot-wedge welding of the resulting panels requires a narrower operating window than typical HDPE geomembranes because medium-density grades soften across a broader thermal interval. For 1.5 mm sheet, wedge temperatures between 250 °C and 320 °C and travel speeds of 0.8–1.5 m/min are evaluated in a three-run matrix before production welding. Seam shear strength is measured according to ASTM D4437, and peel separation is recorded under ASTM D6392. Destructive testing is performed on coupons cut from each panel edge and from intersection welds where extrusion fillet welding has been used. Surface embossing of the sheet to a depth of 0.08–0.15 mm can improve heat transfer during wedge welding but may reduce peel values if embossing is too deep. Because published data for this specific configuration is limited, weld parameter validation is a prerequisite, not an option, particularly when panels are installed in secondary containment applications requiring leak-tight seams.

In blown-film conversion of FHH 508 into heavy-duty industrial sacks, a grooved-feed extruder with 30:1 L/D, a 200 mm annular die, and a die gap of 1.2–1.8 mm is used to produce film at 80–180 µm thickness. The blow-up ratio is set between 2.0:1 and 3.0:1, and frost-line height is stabilised at 2–4 die diameters to maintain bubble symmetry on high-output lines. Tensile strength at break is measured by ASTM D882, and Elmendorf tear resistance is assessed with ASTM D1922 in both machine and transverse directions. Dart impact energy is determined under ISO 7765-1. The film is typically converted into valve sacks, open-mouth industrial liners, and flexible intermediate bulk container liners where puncture resistance during filling is a limiting performance factor. Compliance with packaging waste requirements is assessed under EU Directive 94/62/EC; substance registration is handled under REACH, and food-contact status, if required, must be verified against EU Regulation No 10/2011 Annex I or FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(b) on the final food-contact article. Addition of a UV-stabilised carbon black masterbatch at 2–5 wt% is permitted for outdoor storage, with accelerated weathering performed under ASTM D5208 cycle A.
The use of FHH 508 as the central layer in three-layer agricultural silage and greenhouse films introduces a balance between toughness and oxygen transmission rate. In a coextrusion line with a 1.6–2.4 mm die gap and a 2.5:1 blow-up ratio, layer distribution is commonly set at 20/60/20 by mass, with the MDPE core carrying the mechanical load. Melt temperature at the core extruder is held between 210 °C and 225 °C. ESCR of the core layer is measured with ASTM D1693 Condition B, while oxygen transmission rate is determined by ASTM D3985 at 23 °C and 0 % relative humidity. The limiting factor is often not the nominal ESCR of the resin but the dilution effect of processing aids and UV stabiliser masterbatches that migrate to tie-chain-rich amorphous domains. HALS stabilisers are dosed at 0.3–0.8 wt% of the total film mass; excessive antioxidant carryover from the core can suppress adhesion in the skin layers. Puncture resistance of the film is tested according to ASTM D5748, and tear propagation is measured with ISO 6383-2. The finished silage bale film is typically between 25 µm and 40 µm per wrap layer, with UV ageing checked by ISO 4892-2 for a specified exposure interval.
When the grade is specified as an outer sheath in three-layer polyolefin steel pipe coating systems, the extrusion process is configured as a crosshead annular feed around the pipe body. The MDPE topcoat is applied at a thickness of 2.0–4.0 mm over a fusion-bonded epoxy primer and a maleic-anhydride-grafted tie layer. Melt temperature during crosshead extrusion is maintained between 200 °C and 240 °C, and water quenching is initiated after the polyolefin has fused to the adhesive layer. Adhesion testing follows ISO 21809-1:2018, with peel resistance measured at 23 °C and after accelerated ageing. Residual stress is a critical boundary condition: longitudinal reversion of the extruded sheath is measured according to ISO 2505 at 110 °C for 60 min, and values outside the specified limit can generate disbondment at pipe ends during field bending. Cathodic disbondment resistance is assessed under ISO 15711, and indentation resistance is tested at elevated temperature using ISO 21809-1 annex provisions. The final coated pipe is used in buried gas transmission and water mains where soil stress and external impact require a balance between modulus and slow crack growth resistance.
Chill-roll sheet lines running FHH 508 at a melt temperature of 210–230 °C use a 30:1 L/D single-screw extruder, a gear melt pump, and a flexible-lip sheet die feeding a three-roll vertical or inclined stack. Roll temperatures are maintained between 50 °C and 80 °C to control crystallinity and surface flatness in sheet from 0.5 mm to 2.0 mm. The sheet is thermoformed at a core surface temperature of 120–135 °C, which is the typical MDPE forming window; published data for FHH 508 in deep-draw configurations is limited. Plug-assisted forming is required when draw ratios exceed 1.5:1, and heater zoning must compensate for the faster sag behaviour of medium-density polyethylene relative to HDPE. Wall thickness distribution is measured with ISO 4593, and tensile modulus of the formed part is checked by ISO 527-2 at 10 mm/min. End products include reusable material-handling trays, pallet top frames, and dunnage sheets for automotive part logistics.
For collation shrink films loaded with construction hardware and heavy retail packs, FHH 508 is introduced at 15–30 wt% into a low-density polyethylene carrier resin. The blend is compounded on a twin-screw extruder with L/D 40:1 or fed as dry blend into a single-screw blown-film line equipped with a 250 mm die and 0.8–1.2 mm die gap. Film gauge is generally 60–120 µm. Free shrink is measured by ASTM D2732 in oil at 120 °C, and shrink force in machine direction is recorded. Puncture resistance is evaluated with ASTM D5748, and Elmendorf tear is tested with ASTM D1922 after shrink-back. The addition of FHH 508 raises the modulus of the shrink film but narrows the seal window; seal initiation temperature is therefore determined by ASTM F88 on a laboratory heat sealer with a 0.5 MPa seal pressure and 0.5 s dwell before production sealing. Packaging waste compliance is assessed under EU Directive 94/62/EC.
