On high-output heavy-duty sack lines producing 25–50 kg industrial sacks for resin and fertilizer packaging, Clearflex MDPE FH 50 is dry-blended with a butene- or hexene-LLDPE at 15–30 wt% to raise secant modulus and reduce stretch under stacking load. The nominal density of 0.934 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1 and melt flow rate of 0.50 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 define the processing envelope. On a 70 mm grooved-feed extruder with an L/D ratio of 30:1 and a barrier screw fitted with a Maddock mixing section, barrel set-points between 195°C and 220°C, die body at 210–215°C, and melt temperature of 205–212°C are typical control limits. Head pressure before the breaker plate commonly ranges from 320 bar to 420 bar with a 40/80/40 mesh screen pack. Die gaps of 1.8–2.0 mm for film between 150 µm and 250 µm, a blow-up ratio of 2.4:1–3.0:1, and a frost line height of 6–8 die diameters maintain bubble stability. Lower die gaps below 1.5 mm or melt temperatures below 195°C produce visible melt fracture and gauge variation. Tensile properties are measured according to ISO 527-3, dart impact according to ISO 7765-1 method A, and Elmendorf tear according to ISO 6383-2. The medium-density structure raises the 2% secant modulus relative to LLDPE controls, but the magnitude depends on blow-up ratio, frost line height, and draw-down; converters should not extrapolate dart impact values across thicknesses without orientation data.
Collation shrink lines running 38–60 µm polyolefin film for bottle and can multipacks incorporate 10–20 wt% Clearflex MDPE FH 50 into a C6-LLDPE/LDPE base to increase stiffness and puncture resistance without shifting low-temperature seal initiation beyond tunnel sealing conditions. Blown-film processing with a die gap of 1.6–2.0 mm and a blow-up ratio of 3.0:1–3.5:1 orients the film sufficiently for balanced MD/TD shrinkage; shrink force and release behaviour are measured according to ISO 14616, while puncture resistance is measured according to ISO 7765-2. The seal region formed by heated bars or impulse sealing should be evaluated for hot-tack and seal strength after contact with mineral oil-free production lubricants; an antiblock loading of 3000–5000 ppm silica is typical, and a fluoroelastomer processing aid at 300–600 ppm reduces melt fracture at high output. Published data for this specific collation-shrink configuration are limited, so film trials should establish the lowest acceptable sealing temperature and tunnel profile; tunnel set-points between 140°C and 160°C with 3–5 s residence are normally required to reach final pack tightening.
Frozen food packaging converted on vertical form-fill-seal machines uses 60–100 µm blown films containing 15–30 wt% Clearflex MDPE FH 50 blended with C6-LLDPE to maintain low-temperature toughness and seal integrity. Food-contact compliance must be verified under U.S. FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for olefin polymers and EU Regulation No 10/2011 for plastic materials intended to contact food; the grade-specific additive package and conversion conditions determine the finished-article migration status. Low-temperature dart impact is measured after 48 h conditioning at -20°C according to ISO 7765-1 method A; a decline relative to the unfilled control often indicates excessive TD orientation when blow-up ratio exceeds 3.0:1. Sealing jaws are typically run at 130–145°C with 0.4–0.8 s dwell and 0.3–0.5 N/mm² pressure; hot-tack strength should be measured to ISO 16215 or ASTM F1921 to confirm seal integrity at filling speeds above 60 packages/min. Erucamide slip and silica antiblock levels must be controlled below 1000 ppm and 6000 ppm respectively to limit organoleptic and migration risk in frozen contact; avoid polyisobutylene tackifiers when low-temperature haze and print adhesion are critical. Internal bubble cooling and a frost line height of 5–7 die diameters reduce crystal size and improve gauge uniformity; a melt temperature of 210–225°C on a 70 mm extruder at 180–220 kg/h is a common operating envelope. If the film is laminated to EVOH or polyamide, purge protocols must prevent nylon or EVOH residues from degrading in the MDPE layer.
Agricultural mulch and greenhouse side sheets converted from medium-density blown film require weathering stabilisation and high puncture resistance rather than low seal initiation. Clearflex MDPE FH 50 is added at 30–50 wt% to a C6-LLDPE carrier to stiffen the sheet and resist hail impact; film thickness ranges from 80 µm to 200 µm, and the blown-film die gap is set at 2.0–2.4 mm with a blow-up ratio of 1.8:1–2.5:1 and melt temperature of 200–210°C. For outdoor service, formulations incorporate HALS at 0.4–0.8 wt%, a benzotriazole or triazine UV absorber at 0.2–0.4 wt%, and in black mulch grades 2.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch; accelerated weathering is assessed under ISO 4892-2, and retained tensile properties are measured by ISO 527-3. Puncture resistance measured to ISO 7765-2 and trouser tear to ISO 6383-2 are used to qualify films for high-wind installations. The process window narrows when MDPE addition exceeds 50 wt%; bubble flutter and blocking increase unless external cooling air temperature is kept above 10°C and the collapsible frame is maintained within 1.2 m of the frost line. This construction is not suitable for applications requiring high light transmission in the photosynthetically active radiation range unless the film is coextruded with a clear LLDPE skin, because the medium-density core increases thickness-normalised haze.
In three-layer silage wrap, Clearflex MDPE FH 50 serves as a stiff core between cling skins based on EVA or metallocene LLDPE; the core is fed at 20–35 wt% of the total structure, while the skins carry 1–3 wt% polyisobutylene or a comparable cling agent. The cast coextrusion process runs a chill roll temperature of 15–25°C, skin-layer melt temperatures of 230–250°C, core-layer melt temperature of 210–230°C, and a target thickness of 25 µm with basis-weight variation below ±2%. Puncture force is measured according to ISO 7765-2 and retained peeling force between film laps is evaluated with ISO 11339 at 23°C; the core should not contain migratory tackifier because diffusion into the skins produces blocking on the roll after prestretch. Pre-stretching of 55–70% on round bale wrappers concentrates stress in the core; published data for this specific MDPE FH 50 configuration are limited, so film trials must verify that the chosen skin resin remains below skin/cling saturation and that the core does not emit gels larger than 200 µm at the die lip. If gel counts rise, purge with a fractional-MFI LDPE before restarting with MDPE FH 50, and maintain screen packs at 40/80/40 mesh to trap crosslinked residue.
When a drum liner is specified for aqueous surfactant solutions, mild oxidisers, or aliphatic hydrocarbons at 20–40°C, the blend ratio of Clearflex MDPE FH 50 to C8-LLDPE is determined by environmental stress crack resistance rather than by dart impact alone. For liners of 200–400 µm thickness, MDPE FH 50 is used at 20–40 wt% in the core layer to increase ESCR; compression-moulded plaques are tested to ASTM D1693 condition B at 50°C in 100% Igepal CO-630, and MDPE resins in the 0.932–0.936 g/cm³ density range typically exceed 1000 h without failure, although grade-specific lot data from the supplier must be obtained for each production campaign. Large blown-film dies of 350–600 mm diameter with die gaps of 2.0–2.5 mm, blow-up ratios of 1.5:1–2.0:1, and internal bubble cooling are used to control gauge across 250–400 µm walls; melt temperature is maintained at 200–210°C to avoid thermal degradation of the high-molecular-weight fraction. Weld integrity is tested by tensile peel on the weld line according to ISO 527-3 or ASTM D882, and composite IBC inner receptacles are qualified under the relevant UN transport test for plastics packaging, commonly UN 13H2. Chemical compatibility is screened by immersion testing under ISO 175 at the intended chemical concentration and temperature; for oxidising media above 40°C, MDPE FH 50 should not replace a high-density or crosslinked-polyethylene liner without long-term oxidation induction time data from ISO 11357-6.
