Application of Versalis Clearflex MDPE CL58

Monolayer heavy-duty form-fill-seal packaging for granular fertilizers, resin pellets, and industrial mineral fillers is produced with Versalis Clearflex MDPE CL58 as the load-bearing web. The grade’s published density of 0.934 g/cm³ (ISO 1183-1) and melt flow rate in the 0.5–0.8 g/10 min range at 190°C/2.16 kg (ISO 1133-1) establish a high-stalk bubble stability window at blow-up ratios from 2.2:1 to 3.0:1. In monolayer FFS formulations, CL58 is run at 100% of the ethylene polymer base; a fluoropolymer-based process aid is added at 0.5–1.0 wt% to suppress die lip nucleation, and antiblock masterbatch is dosed at 1.0–2.0 wt% to prevent blocking after roll winding. Where automatic filling lines exceed 20 sacks/min, slip masterbatch is incorporated at 0.5–1.2 wt% to maintain kinetic coefficient of friction below 0.30 (ISO 8295). Masterbatches are pre-dispersed in twin-screw compounding and let down on the blown-film line; direct additive blending without carrier resin can generate gel spots and thickness variation. Extrusion is carried out on single-screw grooved-feed lines with L/D 30:1 to 33:1, die gaps of 1.8–2.4 mm, and melt temperatures of 200–230°C; film thickness is held between 100 µm and 180 µm. Production-scale experience on wide-width lines shows that deviations above 230°C narrow the bubble window, while barrel temperatures below 200°C raise extrusion pressure and reduce output. Terminal films are tested for dart drop impact according to ASTM D1709 and Elmendorf tear according to ASTM D1922; tensile yield is reported under ISO 527-3. Compliance for food-contact inner liners falls under FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011, whereas non-food industrial sacks are placed under REACH 1907/2006. End-use product classes include gusseted FFS sacks, bulk bag liners, and PE inserts for FIBCs.

What Limits Seal Integrity When CL58 Is Used in Extrusion-Coated Aseptic Laminates?

Two competing constraints define the processing window for CL58 in T-die extrusion coating onto paperboard and aluminum foil: oxidative adhesion and neck-in. On a coating line equipped with a 90 mm single-screw extruder at L/D 30:1, melt temperature is maintained between 285°C and 315°C; below 285°C the polyethylene melt has insufficient polar oxidative species for adhesion to paperboard or primed foil, while above 315°C low-molecular-weight volatiles and gel formation become visible as smoke, deposit build-up on the die lip, and coating odour. Blending CL58 with LDPE at 15–30 wt% reduces neck-in and improves drawdown on substrates running at 100–200 m/min; where foil is coated, a coextruded maleic-anhydride-grafted PE tie layer constitutes 5–10% of total coating weight and is used to lift foil peel strength above 4 N/15 mm (ASTM F904). Coating weights are normally set from 15 g/m² to 35 g/m², and the substrate surface is corona-treated to at least 42 mN/m before coating. Slip additives are omitted or kept below 0.2 wt% in extrusion coating because they migrate to the seal surface and reduce heat-seal strength.

The compliance pathway for food-contact carton stock uses FDA 21 CFR 176.170(c) for paperboard laminates and EU 10/2011, with overall migration controlled below 10 mg/dm²; where polyurethane laminating adhesives are used in subsequent converting, primary aromatic amine migration is checked below 0.01 mg/kg. Terminal structures include aseptic paperboard cartons, liquid packaging sachets, and foil-based barrier pouches for dry and wet food. On production lines, batch-to-batch variation in melt index should be limited to ±0.1 g/10 min; higher flow shifts the neck-in curve and forces the operator to reduce line speed, while lower flow raises melt pressure and can produce edge encapsulation voids in the laminating nip. Published data for CL58 in retortable lamination structures is limited; qualification must include seal strength per ASTM F88 and peel strength per ASTM F904 after thermal cycling.

Where silage wrap must resist puncture during bale wrapping and stacking, a three-layer coextruded structure places CL58 in the core at 20–40 wt% between LLDPE skin layers. The core addition is adjusted to the lower end of the range when high cling is needed in the skins and raised toward 40 wt% when puncture resistance is the dominant requirement; LLDPE skins typically make up 60–80 wt%, and EVA is added at 5–15 wt% only in the cling skin to modify tack and unwind force. A UV stabilizer masterbatch is dosed at 3–6 wt% for film exposed outdoors beyond 6 months; unstabilized CL58 film embrittles under solar UV. Processing is performed on three-layer blown-film systems with BUR from 2.5:1 to 3.2:1, die gap 2.0–2.6 mm, and melt temperature 210–230°C; frost-line height is held within the tower’s upper third to maintain low blocking and preserve cling performance. Compliance for silage films is referenced to EN 13207 and, for greenhouse covering films, EN 13206; tensile properties are reported under ISO 527-3 and trouser tear under ASTM D1004. Terminal products include round bale silage wrap, silage pit covers, and greenhouse covering.

When Medium-Density Polyethylene Replaces HDPE in Blow-Moulded ESCR-Critical Containers

The substitution of CL58 for HDPE in industrial containers changes the ESCR–stiffness balance: environmental stress crack resistance improves in detergent and oleochemical contact, while top load and wall stiffness decline. For UN-certified jerrycans, the resin is processed at 100% or with post-industrial regrind limited to 20–25 wt%; carbon black masterbatch is let down to a final carbon black content of 2.0–2.5 wt% when UV exposure during transport or storage is expected. Blow-moulding is executed on accumulator-head machines with parison programming and clamp force from 500 kN to 1,200 kN, at melt temperature 190–210°C and mould temperature 10–25°C. Parison programming is required because the medium-density melt has lower melt strength than HDPE; unprogrammed parison sag causes wall thinning at the pinch-off zone. The resin should be pre-dried below 0.05% moisture only if regrind or masterbatch has been stored above 60% RH; otherwise surface condensation can produce pinholing in the weld line.

Regulatory compliance for hazardous-liquid transport uses UN 1H1 performance testing under ADR/RID 6.1.5, with drop tests at -18°C for packing group II and stack tests at 40°C for 28 days; food-contact containers must additionally comply with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011. ESCR is evaluated under ASTM D1693 Condition B, and density under ASTM D792. Published industrial data for CL58 in high-stack UN jerrycan designs is limited; qualification must verify top load after contact with the intended chemical matrices, because ESCR ranking obtained from ASTM D1693 does not automatically predict performance in filled-container storage. Terminal products include agricultural chemical jerrycans, detergent and oleochemical containers, and industrial liquid packaging.

Lamination sealant webs for dry food pouches are produced by cast film extrusion using CL58 at 100% or in blends with LDPE at 15–30 wt%. The blend ratio is set by the heat-seal initiation temperature: higher LDPE content reduces seal initiation, while higher CL58 content increases stiffness and puncture resistance. Slip and antiblock masterbatches are added at 1.0–2.0 wt% to prevent roll blocking and to maintain coefficient of friction below 0.25 on automatic pouch machines. Processing uses a cast-film extruder with chill-roll temperature controlled at 15–25°C; film thickness ranges from 30 µm to 80 µm, and line speeds are typically 80–250 m/min. Chill-roll temperature above 25°C produces release variability and can lower seal gloss, while below 15°C moisture condensation from high-humidity air can create surface haze. Compliance for food-contact sealant webs is governed by FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and EU 10/2011; seal strength is measured according to ASTM F2029, and melt flow rate verification follows ISO 1133-1. Terminal product types include printed flexible laminations, snack pouches, and coffee packet sealant films.
