    More Introduction

Versalis SINKRAL M 152 is a medium-flow acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding grade manufactured by continuous mass polymerisation. The pellets are identified in accordance with EN ISO 11469:2016 using the abbreviated term >ABS< unless a custom colour masterbatch or additive package requires additional coding. The grade is positioned for thin- to medium-wall injection-moulded components in which melt fluidity, surface appearance, dimensional stability, and impact resistance must be balanced without post-moulding annealing. In continuous mass ABS, the polybutadiene rubber phase is dispersed as grafted particles within a styrene-acrylonitrile matrix; the residual surfactant load is generally lower than in emulsion-polymerised ABS, which can reduce mould deposit formation during prolonged high-temperature campaigns. Density under ISO 1183-1 is typically reported near 1.05 g/cm³. Melt-volume flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C and 10 kg falls in the medium-flow band for injection-grade ABS, generally between 15 cm³/10 min and 25 cm³/10 min. Exact batch values require supplier certificates of analysis because the melt-flow specification is conditioned by rubber-particle size distribution, graft ratio, and molecular mass of the styrene-acrylonitrile phase.

Why Does Moisture Control Precede Any Melt-Temperature Adjustment?

ABS pellets absorb atmospheric moisture until equilibrium with ambient relative humidity. An increase in retained moisture from 0.02 wt% to 0.15 wt% is sufficient to generate splay, silver streaking, and measurable loss of surface gloss in thin-wall parts. Pre-drying in a desiccant dryer with a dew point below -20 °C at 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h reduces residual moisture below 0.05 wt% in normal storage conditions. Hopper loaders should be closed-loop and fed with dry-air sweep to prevent re-absorption in high-humidity plants above 60% RH. Water content is verified by coulometric Karl Fischer titration to ISO 15512:2019 or a calibrated thermogravimetric moisture analyser. Drying beyond 6 h at 80 °C produces no additional processing advantage and can shift the pellet surface oxidative state, particularly if the dryer is not equipped with regeneration control. Material removed from storage below 0 °C must be conditioned in a closed hopper to ambient temperature before entering the feed throat to avoid condensation.

When the grade is converted into appliance fascia panels with a nominal wall thickness of 2.0 mm, a melt-temperature range of 230 °C to 260 °C is applied. Mould temperature is maintained between 40 °C and 70 °C to reproduce gloss, reduce weld-line visibility, and stabilise post-ejection dimensions. Injection speed is set to a fill-time target of 0.5 s to 2.0 s for parts below 100 g; fill speed is adjusted with short-shot studies using ISO 294-1:2017 test-plaque tooling as the baseline. A three-zone reciprocating screw with length-to-diameter ratio from 18:1 to 20:1 and compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 is conventional for this viscosity band. Shot size should occupy 40% to 70% of barrel capacity. If nozzle pressure drop exceeds 1200 bar, the fill-speed profile is reduced or gate dimensions are modified. The recovery speed is set to allow screw-back time not exceeding 80% of cooling time. A melt cushion of 3 mm to 6 mm is maintained to damp pressure fluctuations at the non-return valve. Each of these limits is evaluated on the actual injection unit because accumulator response, nozzle orifice, and hot-runner pressure loss vary between production lines.

If a High-Heat ABS Is Substituted, Which Property Trade-Offs Become Apparent?

Substitution of SINKRAL M 152 with a high-heat ABS grade typically raises the Vicat softening temperature by 5 K to 15 K when measured to ISO 306/B50, but the same change commonly reduces melt-volume flow rate by 10% to 40% at 220 °C/10 kg depending on the higher-heat comonomer and rubber morphology. SINKRAL M 152 is therefore selected for short-cycle injection of parts with intermittent thermal exposure, such as electronic enclosures, small domestic-appliance bodies, and rigid luggage shells, whereas high-heat grades are reserved for enclosures exposed to continuous service above 85 °C or for parts subjected to heat-staking operations. The difference in chain rigidity also affects post-mould shrinkage after 48 h: high-heat grades can require holding-pressure changes of 5% to 15% to maintain the same dimensions when the tool is unchanged. Extrusion-grade SINKRAL formulations with higher molecular mass provide better melt strength for sheet and profile extrusion but are not directly interchangeable in injection tools because they generate higher screw torque, higher back-pressure, and longer recovery times. Published data for the exact M 152 comparison with an unnamed high-heat or extrusion comparator is limited; the converter must perform a head-to-head moulding trial because the response is tool-specific.

Electroplating and painting require precise control of surface rubber domains. SINKRAL M 152 can be specified for decorative electroplating only when the chromic acid etch process is optimised for butadiene rubber at the moulded surface. A conventional etch bath for ABS uses chromium trioxide at 350 g/L to 450 g/L and sulfuric acid at 350 g/L to 400 g/L, operated at 60 °C to 70 °C for 5 min to 15 min. The etch selectively oxidises surface rubber particles and creates mechanical anchoring sites for the subsequent electroless nickel or copper strike. If the surface rubber density is suppressed by very fast mould cooling, plate adhesion is reduced. For this reason mould temperature should remain above 45 °C during electroplating-quality moulding, and post-etch rinsing must avoid air exposure longer than 60 s before the activator bath. Paint adhesion on unplated ABS is evaluated by cross-cut testing to ISO 2409:2013 after the specified paint system is applied. Published data for high-speed electroplating of this specific grade is limited; pre-production plate-adhesion trials on the production tool are mandatory because gate flow and weld-line orientation affect local rubber distribution.

Cold-Runner Tooling, Regrind Loading, and Dimensional Control

Cold-runner tools with SINKRAL M 152 generally provide acceptable filling for wall thicknesses down to 1.5 mm. At wall thickness below 1.2 mm, the flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratio should be kept below 150:1 in cold tools. Hot-runner systems with internally heated nozzles can extend this ratio but require independent nozzle-tip temperature control to avoid stagnant resin, which degrades and releases a characteristic styrene odour. Regrind can be incorporated up to 20 wt% without a significant decline in notched Charpy impact when tested to ISO 179-1/1eA. Recycled material must be sieved to remove fines below 0.5 mm and dried to below 0.08 wt% moisture before blending. At higher regrind loading, repeated thermal histories consume the grafted rubber-SAN shell and raise melt-viscosity variability; the resulting impact loss is most visible in notched Charpy at -30 °C. Published data for the exact M 152 regrind tolerance above 30 wt% is limited, and each plant must validate the mechanical property retention on production equipment.

In thin-wall electronic enclosure moulding, dimensional control is affected by packing and shrinkage anisotropy. Shrinkage measured after 48 h at 23 °C and 50% RH to ISO 294-4:2018 for injection ABS is typically 0.4% to 0.7% in the flow direction and 0.4% to 0.8% transverse to flow; the exact SINKRAL M 152 value must be extracted from the supplier datasheet at the specified part thickness. If the part is annealed at 85 °C for 2 h, additional post-shrinkage of 0.05% to 0.2% can occur. Prototypes should therefore be measured after full annealing and not immediately after ejection, particularly when the final application includes heat-generating electronic components.
