Versalis SINKRAL M 132 is a general-purpose acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) injection-moulding grade supplied as pellets for conversion on conventional single-flight injection-moulding machines. The material consists of a continuous styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer matrix with a dispersed polybutadiene grafted-rubber phase; this morphology provides the notched-impact response associated with ABS without an external impact modifier. In the Versalis SINKRAL portfolio, the grade occupies the medium-flow/medium-impact segment, positioned between lower-viscosity high-flow grades and higher-rubber-content high-impact grades. Representative conversion routes include appliance housings, electrical enclosures, window bezels, vacuum-cleaner components, and automotive interior trim parts. The following data are drawn from manufacturer-published typical values and standardised test methods; they are not specification minima and should be confirmed against the current grade-specific technical data sheet.

The melt mass-flow rate of 13 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 places SINKRAL M 132 in the medium-flow band for injection moulding. The notched Izod value of 27 kJ/m² at 23 °C is accompanied by a reduction to 8 kJ/m² at -30 °C, consistent with the ductile-to-brittle transition of a standard ABS rubber phase. The flexural modulus of 2300 MPa supports structural stiffness in clamshell housings and flat electrical enclosures, while the Vicat B50 value of 97 °C and heat deflection temperature of 87 °C define the short-term thermal boundary for load-bearing parts. Because no flame-retardant package is present, the UL 94 rating is HB at 1.5 mm; applications requiring V-2, V-1, or V-0 performance must select a flame-retardant ABS or an alternative polymer system.
Before melt processing, SINKRAL M 132 requires forced hot-air dehumidified drying at 80 °C for 3–4 h in a hopper dryer with a dew point of -20 °C or lower. Residual moisture must be held below 0.05 %; inadequately dried pellets produce silver streaking, splaying at the gate, and reduced weld-line strength. On a three-zone injection-moulding screw with L/D of 20:1 to 22:1 and compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1, barrel settings are commonly 190 °C in the feed zone, 210–230 °C in the compression zone, and 230–250 °C at the nozzle. Melt temperature should not exceed 270 °C. Mould temperatures from 40 °C to 70 °C are acceptable; the lower end reduces cycle time but increases frozen-in orientation and may lower surface gloss, while the upper end improves weld-line strength and grain reproduction. Back pressure is typically 0.5–1.0 MPa, and screw speed is kept moderate to limit shear heating. In thin-wall sections below 2.0 mm, injection velocity is increased to complete filling before flow-front freeze-off, but sustained shear rates above 100 000 s⁻¹ can initiate rubber-phase degradation.
SINKRAL M 132 differs from lower-viscosity high-flow ABS grades by retaining a higher notched-impact reserve at equal wall thickness. In direct tooling comparisons, the higher melt viscosity may increase injection-pressure demand by 10–20 % in a given runner and cavity layout, but it reduces gate blush and improves control of flow-front hysteresis in sections above 2.0 mm. For thin-wall transitions below 1.5 mm, tooling should use fan gates or tab gates with minimum thickness of 0.8 mm and cold slug wells to prevent jetting. The grade is not a high-heat ABS: the Vicat B50 value of 97 °C is approximately 10–15 °C below heat-resistant ABS grades specified for automotive interior parts adjacent to heat sources. It should not be selected when continuous operating temperature exceeds 75 °C or when dimensional stability under load at 90 °C is required.
Compared with high-impact ABS grades, M 132 carries a lower rubber-phase fraction. The trade is a lower notched Izod impact strength but a higher flexural modulus and a cleaner mould release from polished tooling. High-impact grades are preferable for components in which impact energy dominates design, such as safety-helmet shells or towing brackets. M 132 is preferable for flat, dimensionally stable panels, electrical covers, and appliance chassis sections where flexural stiffness and surface appearance control the design envelope. Published data for direct substitution into high-heat or high-impact applications is limited; a graded application-specific moulding trial is required before tool release.
In production-scale electrical-enclosure moulding on hydraulic injection machines with clamp force in the 800–1,200 kN class, the critical processing variable is holding-pressure optimisation. A holding-pressure profile of 60–80 % of peak injection pressure for 3–6 s, followed by decay, limits sink marks over ribs and bosses. Rib thickness should not exceed 60 % of adjacent wall thickness to prevent opposing-surface sinks. Screw cushion should be maintained between 4 mm and 8 mm to avoid erratic holding-pressure delivery. Observed production-line failure modes include gate blush from excessive injection velocity through pinpoint gates smaller than 0.6 mm, and cracking at screw bosses when mould-core temperature falls below 40 °C. Batch-to-batch variance in melt mass-flow rate is managed by adjusting melt cushion and holding time rather than increasing barrel temperature, which accelerates volatile generation.
The grade is supplied with standard regulatory declarations under REACH and RoHS for most global markets. No blanket statement should be inferred for food-contact status under EU Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR 177.1020; grade-specific certificates must be requested for each food-contact or medical-housing application. The standard UL 94 rating is HB at 1.5 mm. If electrical enclosures require comparative tracking index values or glow-wire performance, the processor must obtain grade-specific electrical property data from the manufacturer. No intrinsic flame-retardant performance should be assumed.
Chemical resistance is adequate for dilute acids, dilute alkalis, and many household cleaning formulations. Aromatic hydrocarbons, esters, ketones, and concentrated acetic acid cause stress cracking, particularly in parts with high moulded-in stress. Isopropyl alcohol and alcohol-based sanitisers can induce craze formation on stressed surfaces; compatibility tests on moulded parts should be completed before specifying the grade for repeatedly disinfected enclosures. Melt blending with PVC or halogenated flame-retardant systems is not recommended because acidic species generated during plastication can produce plate-out and reduce thermal stability. Amine-based mould-protection sprays should be avoided on visible surfaces because surface reactions can reduce gloss.
Automotive interior trim components such as speaker grilles and fascia brackets are produced from M 132 when grain retention and dimensional stability are required. For these applications, mould surface temperature is maintained at the upper end of the processing window, typically 60–70 °C, to reproduce grain depth and minimise visible flow lines. Lower mould temperatures reduce grain transfer and increase residual stress. Sequential valve-gated filling reduces hesitation lines on long, narrow visible parts. Published data for long-term UV stability of unpainted exterior parts is limited; painting or UV-stabilised ABS should be specified for direct sunlight exposure. Storage should be in sealed containers below 30 °C, protected from direct ultraviolet exposure, because prolonged outdoor storage of pellets can shift melt viscosity and yellow the base resin.
