    More Introduction

Versalis ABS SINKRAL B 532 is a general-purpose acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding grade supplied by Versalis S.p.A. The material belongs to the SINKRAL B series, which positions it among the medium-flow ABS formulations intended for technical components requiring a controlled combination of melt processability, surface hardness, and impact resistance. In ISO 1043 nomenclature, the product is classified as a graft copolymer of acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene, with a continuous styrene-acrylonitrile matrix and dispersed polybutadiene domains that contribute energy absorption during high-speed deformation. The trade designation B 532 does not identify an inherently flame-retardant, UV-stabilised, or electroplating-optimised variant; those performance attributes require a different SINKRAL grade or a compounded modification.

The grade is supplied in pellet form and is suitable for desiccant drying and standard reciprocating-screw injection units. Table 1 lists nominal physical, mechanical, and thermal properties reproduced from the manufacturer’s published technical documentation. The values are traceable to the cited ISO methods, but lot-specific certificates should be requested for critical dimensional tolerances because melt viscosity and pigment dispersion can vary between production batches.

What Injection Moulding Parameters Control Dimensional Stability?

Injection moulding of SINKRAL B 532 on production-scale equipment requires control of melt temperature, mould temperature, and moisture content because shrinkage and surface replication depend on all three variables. Barrel temperature profiles are typically set between 220 °C and 260 °C, with the nozzle maintained in the upper portion of this range and the feed throat kept below 60 °C to avoid premature pellet bridging. The screw is normally a general-purpose three-zone geometry with an L/D ratio of 20:1 to 24:1 and a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1. A non-return valve and a shut-off nozzle are recommended for high-speed filling to prevent drool and to hold a consistent cushion of 3 mm to 6 mm.

Moisture content is the primary source of surface defects and molecular weight retention problems in ABS. The pellets must be dried to 0.1 % or less before plasticating. Desiccant dryers are required when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %; typical drying conditions are 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h with a dew point below -20 °C. Drying hoppers with insulated cones and return-air monitoring reduce batch-to-batch variation on manufacturing lines. Inadequate drying produces splay, silver streaks, embrittlement, and deviation from the certified melt flow rate.

Mould temperature is a critical variable because it governs surface gloss, frozen-in stress, and post-mould shrinkage. A mould temperature below 40 °C shortens cooling time but reduces gloss and may increase internal stress. A mould temperature above 80 °C improves surface quality and weld-line strength but prolongs cycle time and can produce sink marks in thick sections. For dimensional control, the cavity should be designed with uniform cooling channels and ejector pins located away from high-shrinkage regions. The reported mould shrinkage of 0.4 % to 0.6 % under ISO 294-4 is a flow-direction value; actual shrinkage depends on wall thickness, gate freeze time, and molecular orientation.

Injection velocity and holding pressure are selected according to part geometry, not material type alone. For a rectangular plaque of 2 mm wall thickness, a filling time of 0.5 s to 1.5 s is typical. Holding pressure is usually 50 % to 70 % of peak injection pressure and is maintained until gate freeze. Back pressure of 0.5 MPa to 1.5 MPa improves melt homogeneity and air expulsion. Peripheral screw speed is normally 20 m/min to 30 m/min; excessive shear heating should be avoided because thermal degradation of the butadiene phase can cause yellowing and impact loss.

Across the Versalis SINKRAL portfolio, B 532 is positioned as a general-purpose moulding grade rather than a high-heat or electroplating grade. High-heat ABS grades intended for sun-load automotive components typically show Vicat B50 values above 105 °C and melt flow rates below 10 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1; B 532 falls below that thermal class but offers higher throughput and lower injection pressure. Electroplating ABS grades are formulated with a specific polybutadiene particle-size distribution and surface chemistry to allow chromic acid etching and palladium-tin activation before electroless nickel and copper deposition. B 532 is not specified for electroplating-grade adhesion. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, and platers should not substitute the grade into an etching line validated for a dedicated plating ABS.

When compared with high-gloss ABS grades, B 532 retains medium-flow processability but its gloss level is more sensitive to mould temperature and injection speed. For parts requiring uniformly high surface gloss, a mould temperature of 70 °C to 80 °C is normally necessary, and the gate should be positioned to avoid jetting. In applications requiring UL 94 V-0 or V-2, B 532 is not a direct replacement because the grade is normally classified as UL 94 HB, an uncontrolled horizontal burn classification suitable only where vertical self-extinguishing behaviour is not mandated by the end-use product standard.

Chemical Resistance, Paintability, and Stress-Cracking Boundaries

Chemical resistance and environmental stress-cracking behaviour are controlled by the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix and the butadiene rubber phase. Under ISO 175 immersion testing and ISO 4600 environmental stress-cracking procedures, ABS generally resists aqueous solutions, dilute acids, dilute bases, glycols, and aliphatic hydrocarbons. The grade is incompatible with ketones, esters, chlorinated hydrocarbons, aromatic solvents, and strong oxidising acids; these agents can cause swelling, dissolution, or environmental stress cracking. Under tensile stress from moulded-in residual strain, metal inserts, or thread-forming fasteners, even low solvent concentrations can initiate crazes in the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix.

Secondary finishing operations should avoid solvent-borne coatings with aggressive carrier solvents. Waterborne paints and polyurethane adhesives are preferred for decorative and assembly steps. If a solvent-borne coating is unavoidable, adhesion should be checked according to ASTM D3359, and the part should be annealed or conditioned to reduce residual stress before coating. Cyanoacrylate adhesives can accelerate stress cracking in ABS; silicone, methacrylate, or polyurethane systems are generally less aggressive. Wiping with ketone-based cleaners should be replaced with isopropanol-water mixtures, and the contact time should be limited to 15 s or less to avoid surface blush.

Paintability of B 532 is adequate for interior components when the moulded surface is clean and free of release agents. For adhesion-critical applications, surface activation by corona or plasma treatment is used at line speed with equipment capable of maintaining a wetting tension above 40 mN/m prior to coating. The specific treatment level must be validated on the production line because batch-to-batch variation in surface gloss and additive migration can alter wetting performance.

When Regulatory Documentation Becomes a Gate for Use in Consumer and Electrical Markets

Compliance of SINKRAL B 532 in finished goods depends on the converter’s documentation rather than the resin datasheet alone. The grade is usually supplied with a REACH Article 33 statement for substances of very high concern and a RoHS declaration under Directive 2011/65/EU as amended by (EU) 2015/863. These supplier declarations do not cover additives introduced by a downstream compounder or masterbatch producer. Electrical and electronic equipment intended for the European Union market must be evaluated under IEC 62321 test methods when verification of homogeneous materials is required.

Food-contact and medical-grade applications are not automatically supported by a general-purpose ABS datasheet. If the part is intended for direct food contact, the moulder must verify that Versalis has declared grade-specific compliance under Regulation (EU) 10/2011. Medical device housings requiring USP Class VI or ISO 10993-1 biological evaluation must be qualified on the finished device; the resin supplier’s material certification does not by itself satisfy finished-device biocompatibility requirements. Table 2 summarises the documentation position for common compliance matrices.

Processors should retain the current material certificate and lot-level drying record because these documents support traceability for automotive, electrical, and appliance end-use audits. The operational boundary for unmodified B 532 remains general-purpose injection moulding of non-structural interior components where the service temperature does not exceed the heat deflection temperature corrected for continuous load.
