    Application of Unience XLPE HFC3210

On single-screw building-wire insulation lines processing stranded copper conductors from 1.5 mm² to 16 mm², the crosslinkable halogen-free compound designated Unience XLPE HFC3210 is processed as the primary insulation layer over a tinned or bare copper core. The compound is dried at 70–80 °C for 2–4 h in a desiccant dryer with a dew point of ≤ -40 °C whenever storage relative humidity exceeds 60%, because residual moisture initiates premature silanol condensation in the screw root. Extrusion is carried out on a 65 mm single-screw extruder with 30:1 L/D, screw compression ratio 2.5:1, barrel zone temperatures of 150–175 °C from feed to metering, and die head temperature 180–190 °C; head pressure is limited to 20–30 MPa to avoid over-shear of the halogen-free char-forming system. The moisture-cure Sioplas addition ratio is 95 parts HFC3210 to 5 parts tin catalyst masterbatch by weight; the 90:10 let-down is used only when line speed exceeds 120 m/min and post-cure water-bath residence is below 6 h. The coated conductor passes through a steam or warm-water bath at 75–90 °C for 6–8 h, after which hot-set testing at 200 °C for 15 min under 0.2 MPa requires elongation under load not exceeding 175% and gel content by ASTM D2765-16 above 65%. Finished cables are qualified under IEC 60502-1 for 0.6/1 kV service, IEC 60332-1-2 for single-wire flame propagation, IEC 60754-2 requiring halogen acid gas pH ≥ 4.3 and conductivity ≤ 10 µS/mm, and IEC 61034-2 requiring smoke light transmittance ≥ 60%. The compound is supplied with EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH SVHC declarations where required, and amine-based co-additives are excluded because they deactivate the tin condensation catalyst. Terminal product types include LSZH insulated single-core building wires, general-purpose 450/750 V control panel wiring, and internal appliance wiring leads.

What Limits IEC 62930 PV Cable Jacket Performance Under Damp Heat?

In photovoltaic cable jacketing, the governing failure modes are loss of elongation after damp-heat ageing and surface cracking under UV exposure. For solar cables tested according to EN 50618 and IEC 62930, HFC3210 is used as the outer halogen-free jacket over a crosslinked polyolefin insulation, with a halogen-free flame-retardant system that must maintain insulation resistance after 1000 h at 85 °C and 85% relative humidity. The formulation addition ratio is 100 parts HFC3210 with 3–5 parts of a low-volatile UV/antioxidant masterbatch and 5 parts of the matched silane-cure catalyst masterbatch; the lower catalyst ratio is preferred in high-humidity cable plants to reduce premature surface crosslinking during pellet handling. The jacket is applied on a triple-layer co-extrusion line with a 90 mm main extruder, L/D 28:1, die temperature 170–195 °C, and melt pressure held between 15 MPa and 25 MPa; die gap is set at 1.2–1.8 mm with a draw ratio of 1.5–2.0, and the jacket wall thickness is typically 0.6–1.0 mm over the insulation assembly. Line speed ranges from 40–80 m/min, and the cable enters a steam bath at 85 °C for 4–6 h to complete moisture crosslinking. Tensile strength and elongation after ageing are verified according to IEC 60811-401; elongation at break must remain above 125% absolute after 1000 h damp heat. Amine-based hindered amine light stabilizers are not used because they interfere with the silane catalyst, and pellets stored above 60% RH require 2 h drying at 70–80 °C before extrusion. Terminal product types include H1Z2Z2-K and PV1-F solar cables rated at 1500 V DC, single-core photovoltaic home-run cables, and solar farm earthing leads.

Railway Rolling Stock Jacketing and EN 45545-2 Hazard Level Requirements

Railway vehicle cable jackets require a coordinated set of fire, smoke, and toxicity properties that are not met by generic polyethylene grades. Within this scenario HFC3210 is compounded at 100 parts base resin with 6–8 parts of a phosphorus-nitrogen intumescent synergist and 2 parts of a modified organoclay char promoter per 100 parts; loadings above 8 parts reduce hot-set elongation and can leave surface deposits on the cable, while loadings below 6 parts lower the limiting oxygen index below 32% in laboratory tests. Extrusion for jacketing is performed on a 120 mm single-screw extruder with L/D 25:1 and a grooved feed section, barrel temperatures 140–170 °C, die temperature 175–185 °C, and vacuum sizing to maintain jacket concentricity within 0.1 mm over varied core geometries. The subsequent moisture-cure bath is operated at 80–90 °C for 8–10 h for wall thicknesses up to 3.5 mm; thicker jackets can require up to 12 h to achieve uniform gel content, with solvent extraction per ASTM D2765-16 used on the jacket strip. Compliance is assessed according to EN 45545-2 R15/R16 for fire hazard, EN 50264-1 for railway rolling stock cable mechanical and thermal requirements, and EN 61034-2 for smoke density with light transmittance target ≥ 70%. Amine-based stabilizers are incompatible with the moisture-cure catalyst; phenolic/phosphite systems are used instead. The terminal product types include rolling stock jumper cables, control and instrumentation cables for rail vehicles, and low-smoke jumper assemblies installed in underfloor or enclosed traction spaces.

Where thin-wall automotive primary wire specifications require crosslinked halogen-free insulation for continuous conductor temperatures up to 150 °C, HFC3210 is processed on 30 mm single-screw extruders with L/D 24:1, vacuum sizer, and conductor preheat at 80–120 °C to control eccentricity within 0.03 mm on insulation walls as thin as 0.25 mm. The automotive formulation uses 100 parts HFC3210 with 1–2 parts of a scorch-retardant co-agent per 100 parts; the addition is reduced to the lower limit when conductor sizes fall below 0.35 mm² because higher loadings can produce surface roughness. Melt temperature is held at 160–185 °C, die pressure 15–25 MPa, and the insulation is applied to tinned copper conductors before entering an electron-beam accelerator at 120–180 kGy. The beam current and line speed are matched to maintain dose variation within ± 10 kGy; line speed in automotive thin-wall lines commonly reaches 300–500 m/min, depending on beam power and conductor size. Crosslink density is monitored by solvent extraction per ASTM D2765-16 with gel content ≥ 70%, and hot-set testing is used for rapid line-side verification. Compliance is established under ISO 6722-1 for single-core cables, ISO 19642 for high-voltage shielded cables, LV112 for German OEM electric vehicle requirements, and UL 758 for component wires. Published data for this specific e-beam configuration is limited for HFC3210; initial qualification should measure gel fraction at three dose levels and record tensile retention after 3,000 h at 150 °C before fixing production settings. Terminal product types include 0.35–6 mm² thin-wall primary wires, battery management system sensor conductors, and high-voltage shielded cables for electric drive systems.

When Offshore Cable Sheathing Must Pass NEK TS 606 Mud Acid Resistance Tests

For dynamic offshore and subsea cable sheathing, the outer jacket must retain mechanical integrity after long-term contact with heated synthetic drilling mud, seawater, and acidic gas condensates. HFC3210 is used as the primary jacketing resin at 100 parts with 5–8 parts of a hindered amine stabilizer masterbatch and 2–3 parts of a high-molecular-weight processing lubricant per 100 parts; stabilizer loadings above 8 parts are not recommended because they migrate to the jacket surface and reduce adhesion to underlying armour, while loadings below 5 parts show measurable tensile loss after 28 d immersion in 120 °C synthetic drilling mud. Sheathing is extruded on a 120 mm single-screw extruder with L/D 25:1 and a grooved feed section, at barrel temperatures 140–170 °C, die temperature 175–185 °C, and a cooling trough length of 30 m to manage heavy wall thickness up to 5 mm; line speed is limited to 10–20 m/min to allow uniform crystallization and avoid sink marks over layered armours. Moisture-cure crosslinking is performed in a 90 °C water bath for 12–24 h for thick jackets, and gel content is checked by ASTM D2765-16 on the jacket strip. Jackets are assessed under NEK TS 606 mud acid resistance, IEC 60092-359 for shipboard cable sheathing, and UL 1309 for marine shipboard cable where applicable; hot-set elongation at 200 °C under 0.2 MPa must not exceed 175%. Terminal product types include marine power and control cables, mud-resistant subsea umbilicals, and offshore platform instrumentation cables.

After electron-beam crosslinking and vacuum expansion, the shape-memory behaviour of HFC3210 is used for extruded heat-shrink sleeves and bus bar insulation tubing. The heat-shrink formulation uses 100 parts HFC3210 with 2–3 parts of polydimethylsiloxane processing aid and 1 part of a color concentrate per 100 parts to achieve uniform expansion without melt fracture. Tubing is first extruded on a 45 mm single-screw extruder with L/D 28:1, die temperature 165–185 °C, and vacuum sizing to control inner diameter within ± 0.05 mm. The tubing is crosslinked by electron beam at 80–120 kGy, then heated to 130–150 °C in a glycerine bath and expanded in a vacuum chamber at an expansion ratio of 2:1 to 3:1; cooling fixes the expanded diameter. Compliance is assessed under ASTM D2671-21 for heat-shrinkable tubing, UL 224 for extruded insulating tubing, and IEC 60684-3 for specification types. Longitudinal shrinkage is measured after 5 min at 200 °C and should be ≤ 5%; tensile strength after full recovery should remain above 12.5 MPa when tested according to ASTM D638-14. Operational boundaries include the need to dry pellets at 70–80 °C if ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, and irradiation dose nonuniformity above ± 15 kGy causes ovality in the expanded tube. Terminal product types include colour-coded marker sleeves, medium-voltage bus bar insulation tubing, and protective heat-shrink jackets for cable splices.
