    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Trinseo MAGNUM™ 8391M ABS resin produced at the Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu Province facility is a mass-polymerization acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene grade for injection-molding applications where controlled melt flow, low residual yellowness, and reduced gel-related surface defects are production requirements. The grade is positioned between higher-impact ABS resins and lower-viscosity general-purpose ABS grades, with a representative melt mass-flow rate of 21 g/10 min at 220 °C under 10 kg load as measured by ISO 1133-1:2022, and a nominal density of 1.05 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1:2019. Preliminary datasheet comparisons list tensile yield stress near 45 MPa by ISO 527-2:2012, flexural modulus near 2450 MPa by ISO 178:2019, and notched Izod impact near 17 kJ/m² at 23 °C by ISO 180/1A:2023. These values are lot-dependent and do not replace the certificate of analysis from Trinseo Zhangjiagang; published data for the specific production configuration is limited in some downstream application documents.

At relative humidity above 60 %, pellet surface moisture promotes silver streaks during open-hopper operation. A desiccant dryer with a −30 °C dew point is specified for pre-drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h, reducing moisture below 0.05 wt% under ISO 15512:2019 before plastication. On production-scale reciprocating-screw machines with 20:1–24:1 L/D ratios, retracting the injection unit after a 15 min interruption and maintaining hopper dry-air purge prevented splay-related rejects in thin-wall housings. Drying above 85 °C for more than 6 h is avoided because pellet sintering and yellowing are observed in lot trials.

What Distinguishes Mass-Polymerized ABS From Emulsion ABS in the 8391M Line?

Mass-polymerized MAGNUM 8391M contains no fatty-acid soap or coagulant residues from emulsion polymerization. The practical consequence is a lower gel count in thin-gauge films and lower yellow index in the natural pellet; compared with a standard emulsion ABS at equivalent rubber content, the mass version typically shifts the mid-range color b* lower under ASTM D2244-23 and reduces surface pitting during molded-in color formulations. This does not imply universal superiority; the absence of interfacial soap changes acid-etch response in electroplating, and plating lines that have qualified emulsion ABS must conduct cross-cut adhesion testing under ISO 2409:2020 before changing feedstock.

For structural parts, stress-whitening resistance and low-temperature ductility may differ from emulsion ABS at the same melt mass-flow rate. In injection-molded test plaques conditioned at 23 °C and 50 % RH under ISO 291:2008, a narrower processing window is reported when melt temperature exceeds 250 °C: brown streaking and a notched impact drop greater than 10 % relative to the 230 °C baseline are attributed to butadiene-phase degradation. Equipment trials on 25 mm general-purpose screws show that lower melt temperature and faster injection speed preserve surface gloss, but pack pressure must be raised 5–10 bar to avoid sink marks in bosses thicker than 2.5 mm.

Usage in white goods and small appliance housings has been qualified on hot-runner molds with valve-gated drops of 1.2 mm diameter; melt temperature at the nozzle is maintained at 225–240 °C, mold temperature at 40–60 °C, and hold pressure at 600–800 bar hydraulic. In this configuration, the resin provides a 60° gloss above 90 GU under ISO 2813:2014, but gloss drops below 85 GU when mold temperature falls below 35 °C or when injection speed is reduced below 80 mm/s in a 30 mm barrel. A two-stage pack pressure profile reduced gloss variation across a 32-cavity manifold by 1.8 GU compared with a single-stage hold, indicating that surface solidification before full gate seal is a primary control variable.

If the Grade Is Transferred From a Higher-Impact ABS Tool

Transfer from a higher-impact ABS to MAGNUM 8391M requires re-qualification of impact, shrinkage, and flatness. Shrinkage of MAGNUM 8391M under ISO 294-4:2018 is typically in the order of 0.4–0.7 % parallel flow and 0.4–0.7 % perpendicular flow, while higher-impact ABS may exhibit slightly different anisotropy. A tool with fixed dimensions has exhibited dimensional shifts of 0.05–0.15 mm in a 300 mm long housing after grade transfer; this is within many appliance tolerances but must be verified because the lower rubber content changes post-mold shrinkage. Critical hot runner manifolds have shown pressure overshoot at the same screw position; the transfer should begin with 5 bar lower holding pressure and 10 °C lower melt temperature than the higher-impact ABS setting, then adjust by short-shot fill balance.

Compared with a higher-impact ABS resin of similar melt viscosity, MAGNUM 8391M trades low-temperature impact for improved thin-wall fill. The practical boundary is that parts requiring Izod impact above 25 kJ/m² at 23 °C or ductile failure below −20 °C are outside the grade’s typical positioning unless prototype testing under ISO 6603-2:2023 demonstrates otherwise. This distinction is relevant for power-tool housings, which often have high-brittleness drop requirements and therefore remain on emulsion or high-impact ABS grades.

Automotive interior trim applications require low volatile content and low odor. Mass-polymerized ABS grades such as MAGNUM 8391M are generally selected when VDA 278:2011 limits for volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds must be met in natural resin before compounding. In production trials, vacuum venting at −0.6 bar and barrel temperature below 240 °C kept total VOC below the relevant OEM limit; published data for this specific configuration is limited, and each molded part must be tested by the molder’s own TDS-GC/MS procedure. Parts should not be exposed to ketone, ester, or aromatic hydrocarbon cleaning solvents; environmental stress-cracking testing under ISO 22088-3:2020 indicates stress cracks when a molded-in strain above 0.5 % is combined with isopropanol wipes.

Drying and Melt Temperature Limits for Zhangjiagang 8391M

Because the Zhangjiagang production line uses underwater pelletizing and subsequent drying, surface moisture at bag closure is low; however, ocean container condensation can raise moisture above 0.08 wt%. The rate of moisture uptake in an open silo at 30 °C and 70 % RH has been observed at approximately 0.01 wt% per 2 h; therefore hopper loading should be limited to 4 h of consumption in humid seasons. Predrying at 80 °C for 4 h with a desiccant dryer having a −30 °C dew point lowers moisture to 0.03 wt% under ISO 15512:2019. Temperatures above 85 °C are not recommended for hopper residence beyond 3 h because agglomeration and color shift occur.

Melt temperature limits are bounded by an upper value of 250 °C and a practical lower limit of 210 °C. Below 210 °C, unfused pellets and cold slug defects appear in the hot-runner manifold; above 250 °C, shear-thinning is accompanied by increased volatile degradation products and gloss loss. Nozzle settings of 225–240 °C are typically used for thin-wall parts, with the minimum achievable cycle time controlled by cooling of the gate land rather than by melt flow.

Values are representative datasheet figures for preliminary tool design and are not specification limits. The production certificate from Trinseo Zhangjiagang controls for the delivered lot. Regulatory documentation for MAGNUM 8391M must be requested from Trinseo for the specific production site. The molder is responsible for verifying conformity to the relevant article standards: EU Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II, REACH SVHC restrictions under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, and any migration limits in Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 if food-contact use is intended. Published data for these compliance statuses is limited at the distributor level, and a blanket statement of compliance should not be derived from a general ABS grade designation. Processing at lower melt temperatures may reduce VOC formation but does not by itself establish final-article compliance.

Thin-Wall Fill Time Data Separate This Grade From General-Purpose ABS

In a side-by-side production trial on a 1.8 mm wall appliance housing, the MAGNUM 8391M resin filled a two-cavity hot-runner tool at a peak injection pressure of 980 bar and fill time 0.45 s, whereas a general-purpose ABS with melt mass-flow rate near 10 g/10 min required 1120 bar at the same fill time. The difference arises from higher melt flow and lower viscosity at the processing shear rate; capillary rheology under ISO 11443:2021 shows shear-thinning from 100 s⁻¹ to 1000 s⁻¹ with less pressure rise than the lower-flow grade. The practical result is a reduction in clamp force demand of approximately 10–12 % for the MAGNUM 8391M melt, provided that wall thickness is below 2.0 mm and the flow length is less than 250 mm from a 1.2 mm valve gate.

Against a higher-impact ABS of equivalent melt mass-flow rate, the key measured difference is notched impact and maximum elongation. The lower rubber content lowers low-temperature ductility; however, it improves consistency of color change during in-mold labeling and reduces risk of gate blush on polished-cavity surfaces. These distinctions are process-dependent and must be confirmed by pilot runs because published data for the specific configuration is limited.

Small appliance housings have been injection molded on 1200 kN hydraulic presses with two-cavity hot-runner tools; mold temperature at 45 °C, melt temperature at 235 °C, and screw speed of 80 min⁻¹ generated a stable cushion of 3 mm. Parts exhibited 60° gloss above 90 GU under ISO 2813:2014 and no visible flow marks at a fill time of 0.45 s; when fill time was reduced to 0.28 s, shear-induced silvering appeared on the gate land. The maximum shear rate in the gate should therefore be maintained within the level validated for the tool steel and surface finish.
