Trinseo Zhangjiagang ABS MAGNUM 8391 is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer produced at the Trinseo Zhangjiagang, China polymerisation and compounding site. The grade designation MAGNUM 8391 identifies an injection-moulding ABS in which melt flow, surface gloss, and dimensional stability are balanced for short-cycle production of housings and enclosures. Within the broader MAGNUM platform, the grade is differentiated from medium-impact and high-impact ABS types by its narrower melt-viscosity range and by a higher practical gloss ceiling under controlled mould temperature. The material is supplied in natural and pre-coloured pellet form. Pellet bulk density typically ranges from 0.55 to 0.65 g/cm³; solid density is 1.04–1.06 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1:2019. In the ISO 2580-1 designation system, the product falls within the ABS copolymer class; the complete designation string, which includes flow rate and property cells, is stated on the lot certificate because pigment and stabiliser packages can shift the flow classification. Incoming moisture after covered storage is normally below 0.10% by weight. Since ABS is hygroscopic, moisture uptake accelerates when relative humidity exceeds 60%; pre-drying is therefore mandatory before melt processing. The grade is used primarily for injection-moulded housings, covers, and trim parts in small appliances, consumer electronics, vacuum cleaner bodies, and cosmetic packaging. Published data for this specific configuration is limited for wall sections below 1.0 mm; qualification of such sections should use lot-specific rheological data.
Melt flow is reported as melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C with a 10.0 kg load. For unfilled lots of MAGNUM 8391 from the Zhangjiagang line, typical values fall between 12 and 22 cm³/10 min. Shear-thinning behaviour is conventional for ABS: apparent viscosity decreases by 40–60% as shear rate increases from 100 s⁻¹ to 1000 s⁻¹. Desiccant drying at 80–85 °C for 2–4 h is recommended; dryer dew point should be held below -40 °C. Drying time should not exceed 6 h at temperatures above 90 °C because pellet surface oxidation can produce yellowing and minor gloss reduction. Barrel setpoints on production-scale reciprocating-screw machines follow a rear-to-nozzle profile of 210, 230, 240, and 250 °C, with nozzle temperature held at 240–250 °C. The melt temperature measured by a needle pyrometer should not exceed 260 °C; total residence time above 250 °C should be limited to 5 minutes or less to avoid thermo-oxidative attack on the polybutadiene phase. Screw geometry with an L/D ratio of 20:1 to 25:1 and a 2:1 compression ratio is sufficient. High-shear mixing screws are not required for standard colour concentrates because the grade is distributive-mixing limited rather than dispersive-mixing limited. A back pressure of 0.3–0.5 MPa helps homogenise colourants without materially increasing melt temperature. Hot-runner manifolds should be operated only with a closed-loop temperature controller; local hot spots above 260 °C in valve gates cause streaking and black specks. Because the grade is sensitive to thermal history, start-up purging should use an acrylic-based purge compound rather than polyolefin, because polyolefin residue can create gloss delamination at the part surface.
When specimens are injection-moulded according to ISO 294-1 and conditioned at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity per ISO 291, tensile yield stress for unfilled MAGNUM 8391 is generally reported between 38 and 46 MPa under ISO 527-2/1A/50. Tensile strain at break varies from 5% to 20% depending on moisture equilibrium and testing speed. Flexural modulus falls between 2.1 and 2.5 GPa under ISO 178, and flexural strength is typically 60–70 MPa at 3.5% strain. Notched Izod impact at 23 °C is specified in the range 15–25 kJ/m² using ISO 180/A; at -30 °C the range drops to 6–10 kJ/m², which is characteristic of ABS with moderate polybutadiene content. Heat deflection temperature under a 1.82 MPa flexural stress is 88–96 °C according to ISO 75-2/A; Vicat softening temperature using a 50 N load and 50 °C/h heating rate is 98–106 °C under ISO 306/B50. Mould shrinkage after 24 h is normally 0.4–0.7% parallel to flow and 0.5–0.8% transverse to flow when measured by ISO 294-4. These ranges are representative for the unfilled grade; the lot certificate supersedes all representative ranges for part qualification. Flame performance is usually classified as HB at 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm thickness under UL 94.
Moisture uptake at 23 °C and 50% RH can bring exposed ABS pellets to equilibrium moisture contents of 0.30–0.45% within 48–72 h; hopper dryers should not be used as long-term storage units. Regrind levels up to 20% by weight are commonly tolerated when the regrind is dry and free of fines, but higher levels increase melt-pressure variation and can reduce weld-line strength. Fines below 2 mm should be removed by screening because they melt earlier and create local discolouration. Mould shrinkage is anisotropic; measured parallel-flow shrinkage is 0.4–0.7%, transverse-flow shrinkage is 0.5–0.8%, and thick sections can develop local shrinkage differences of 0.2%. For critical tolerances below 0.5%, a post-mould conditioning step at 60 °C for 2 h may be required before dimensional inspection.
The main intentional difference is rheological: MAGNUM 8391 is positioned for faster melt delivery than medium-impact general-purpose grades such as MAGNUM 3325. The trade-off is a lower notched Izod impact than high-impact grades such as MAGNUM 3453, typically 15–25% lower at 23 °C when compared on equal specimen preparation. Low-temperature ductility also falls sooner; the -30 °C Izod value is generally 40–60% lower than the 23 °C value, whereas high-impact ABS may retain a larger fraction. Surface gloss under 60° geometry (ASTM D523) for MAGNUM 8391 is typically in the 90–95 range when moulded at 50–60 °C; medium-impact benchmarks may deliver 85–95, and high-impact grades often fall to 75–88 due to larger rubber particle scattering. Flame-retardant ABS grades are not drop-in replacements because flame-retardant additives can reduce flow and gloss, and can increase density to 1.15–1.20 g/cm³. The following table is a representative positioning matrix, not a substitute for lot-certificate comparison.
| Grade or type | MVR 220 °C/10 kg (ISO 1133-1:2022) | Notched Izod 23 °C (ISO 180/A) | HDT 1.82 MPa (ISO 75-2/A) | Gloss 60° (ASTM D523) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MAGNUM 8391 | 12–22 cm³/10 min | 15–25 kJ/m² | 88–96 °C | 90–95 |
| Medium-impact high-gloss ABS | 14–24 cm³/10 min | 18–26 kJ/m² | 87–95 °C | 85–95 |
| High-impact ABS | 6–14 cm³/10 min | 25–35 kJ/m² | 86–94 °C | 75–88 |
For applications requiring both high flow and improved impact, processors sometimes evaluate blends of MAGNUM 8391 with high-impact ABS at 10–30% by weight. Blending can shift gloss stability and increase melt-pressure variation, and the resulting morphology can alter rubber-phase dispersion. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; weld-line and shear-viscosity testing are required before production use. Direct substitution for ABS/polycarbonate blends is not supported because a typical unfilled ABS/PC blend can show HDT at 1.82 MPa from 100 °C to 115 °C and notched Izod impact above 30 kJ/m². MAGNUM 8391 should not be selected for load-bearing automotive interior or ventilation components requiring deflection resistance above 95 °C. Conversely, for cosmetic parts and small appliance covers, the lower melt temperature and shorter cooling time reduce cycle energy demand.
Production-scale injection-moulding on machines with clamping force between 120 and 250 tonnes has been reported for small appliance housings with nominal wall thickness 2.0–3.0 mm. Typical melt temperature is 230–245 °C, mould temperature 30–60 °C, and holding pressure 40–70 MPa hydraulic. Thin ribs at 1.2 mm fill reliably when gate diameter is maintained above 0.8 mm and when injection velocity is set to avoid jetting. Surface gloss is highly sensitive to mould temperature: below 30 °C, quench-induced orientation suppresses gloss and weakens weld lines. Above 70 °C, cycle time increases and sink marks in thick bosses become more likely. Observed failure modes on actual lines include flow splay when residual moisture exceeds 0.08% by weight, silver streaks from hot-runner hot spots above 260 °C, and gate blush when injection velocity exceeds 50 mm/s in cold-runner systems. Single submarine gates of 0.8–1.5 mm diameter are suitable; tab gates give lower residual stress. Mould venting at 0.02–0.03 mm reduces burn marks and short shots. The grade should not be compounded with amine-based processing aids above 0.5% because alkaline residues accelerate thermo-oxidative degradation of the polybutadiene phase. Continuous contact with acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, toluene, or chlorinated solvents should be avoided because these solvents induce environmental stress cracking in ABS. For indoor enclosures below 40 °C, the material performs acceptably; weathering data for this specific configuration is limited beyond 12 months without UV stabiliser or coating.
The Zhangjiagang grade is supplied as a base resin with statements of compliance to RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH. Under GHS classification the pellets are not hazardous in transport; dust from grinding should be controlled because combustible dust limits apply. For electrical and electronic enclosures, flammability certification is usually limited to UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm; higher ratings require a flame-retardant ABS grade rather than post-additising. The product is not automatically food-contact compliant. Users requiring food-contact compliance must request specific grade confirmation because additive and colourant packages can change migration behaviour. Storage in unopened packaging below 40 °C and below 65% relative humidity is recommended. Partially used gaylords should be resealed because ABS pellets can absorb 0.15–0.25% moisture in humid air over 48–72 h. Lot-to-lot MVR variation is generally controlled within ±5% by the Zhangjiagang site, but this represents a process capability statement and is not a contractual limit unless explicitly defined in the purchase specification. Residual styrene monomer is typically low; compliance with applicable national standards should be verified for each shipment when required.
