    More Introduction

Trinseo ABS MAGNUM 938U is a UV-stabilised acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer supplied for injection-moulded exterior and interior components that must retain low-temperature impact behaviour after extended light exposure. The polymer architecture combines a styrene-acrylonitrile matrix with dispersed polybutadiene rubber particles; the mass-polymerisation route used for the MAGNUM platform controls rubber particle size distribution and graft ratio, which influence gloss, melt elasticity, and the ductile-to-brittle transition. Under ISO 2580-2, ABS grades are specified through a data block covering Vicat softening temperature, melt volume-flow rate, notched Izod impact, and tensile modulus. The grade-specific data for MAGNUM 938U appears in the Trinseo product data sheet and in the ISO 10350-1 extraction; published third-party data for this exact configuration is limited, so production release limits should be taken from the lot certificate rather than class-typical screening values.

Where the 938U grade falls within the UV-stabilised ABS performance envelope

In comparison with non-light-stabilised MAGNUM ABS types, 938U contains a UV absorber and a hindered-amine light stabiliser that are melt-compounded into the SAN phase. The package is selected to retard photo-oxidative embrittlement of the polybutadiene rubber phase, which otherwise leads to chalking, gloss loss, and loss of notched Izod impact. The effect is not a large increase in short-term tensile or flexural modulus; it appears as improved retention of colour coordinates and impact after accelerated weathering. Screening for exterior-grade ABS of this class is commonly performed under ISO 4892-2 cycle 1 with a xenon-arc source and a 0.35 W/m² irradiance at 340 nm, but the specific exposure condition and acceptance threshold for 938U should be read from the product data sheet. The exact stabiliser composition is proprietary and is not disclosed in the regulatory data sheet.

The polybutadiene rubber phase in high-impact ABS of this class is typically present at 10% to 20% by weight. Room-temperature notched Izod impact under ISO 180 is generally between 15 kJ/m² and 35 kJ/m², while the −30 °C value is commonly between 5 kJ/m² and 12 kJ/m². Tensile yield stress under ISO 527-2 typically falls between 35 MPa and 50 MPa, and Vicat B50 under ISO 306 method B50 is normally between 90 °C and 110 °C. These ranges are class-typical and are not certified 938U lot limits; the actual values must be taken from injection-moulded ISO 294-1 multipurpose specimens and the material certification.

Injection-moulding trials on 150 t to 350 t hydraulic and hybrid machines show that the grade processes as a medium-viscosity ABS when the melt temperature is maintained between 230 °C and 250 °C. Pre-drying in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h is required when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%; the maximum moisture content is commonly specified below 0.1% by weight by ISO 15512:2019. Failure to dry the material produces splay and reduces notched Izod impact. A three-zone screw with 40 mm diameter and 20:1 L/D ratio is typical; using a general-purpose screw with a compression ratio of 2.2:1 to 2.5:1 provides sufficient plastication. Barrel temperatures from feed to nozzle are commonly set at 210 °C, 225 °C, 235 °C, and 240 °C, with a nozzle temperature of 235 °C to 245 °C. Mould temperature should be held between 40 °C and 60 °C for grained exterior surfaces; the lower value reduces cycle time, while the upper value improves weld-line strength and surface replication. Back pressure is set at 5 MPa to 10 MPa, and injection velocity is adjusted to maintain a flow-front speed of 100 mm/s to 300 mm/s in wall sections down to 2 mm. Holding pressure is applied at 50% to 70% of peak injection pressure for 4 s to 8 s per millimetre of nominal wall thickness.

How should processors adjust thermal and screw conditions relative to unmodified general-purpose ABS?

Processors familiar with unmodified ABS should reduce the tendency to overheat the melt at the nozzle. The UV-stabilised package in 938U is thermally more sensitive than the base SAN phase; melt temperatures above 260 °C can decompose the light stabiliser and produce yellowing in light-coloured or unpigmented parts. The apparent viscosity at 240 °C in the injection moulding shear-rate range of 100 s−1 to 1000 s−1 is class-typically 80 Pa·s to 300 Pa·s, but the actual curve is supplied in the data sheet. The melt flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C and 10 kg for this class is commonly between 10 cm³/10 min and 25 cm³/10 min. If the tool has long flow paths or thin walls below 2 mm, raise melt temperature within the permitted range and increase mould temperature before pushing injection velocity, because high shear heating can locally exceed the stabiliser degradation threshold.

Regrind use must be considered as a controlled variable, not as a direct replacement for virgin resin. Clean sprues and runners are usually acceptable at up to 20% by weight, but each heat history consumes part of the stabiliser package. In accelerated weathering of parts containing regrind from three or more injection-moulding cycles, notched Izod impact after xenon-arc exposure may fall below the values expected from virgin material; this is a known processing boundary rather than a particle-size effect. For critical exterior parts, processors should validate regrind-containing lots by moulding plaques and conducting impact tests according to ISO 180 and weathering according to ISO 4892-2 before release.

The most distinctive difference from an unmodified high-flow ABS is not a single melt flow rate but the balance between flow length and post-ageing impact retention. High-flow ABS grades achieve thin-wall fill by lowering molecular weight, which can reduce low-temperature impact and increase the sensitivity of the rubber phase to oxidation. 938U is formulated to retain a higher contribution from the rubber phase and the UV package, so the injection pressure required to fill the same part is often 5% to 15% higher than that of a general-purpose high-flow ABS. Compared with a PC/ABS blend used for painted or unpainted exterior trim, the ABS-only 938U has lower density and lower Vicat softening temperature; it also does not require the high pre-drying temperatures of 100 °C to 110 °C typical for polycarbonate blends. The trade-off appears at elevated service temperature and in very high-impact requirements. PC/ABS blends commonly show notched Izod impact values above 35 kJ/m² at 23 °C, while ABS-only grades of this class are generally below 35 kJ/m². Therefore, 938U is intended for unpainted, grained dark-coloured components that need UV stability and moderate impact performance but do not require heat resistance above the ABS continuous-use limit.

Quantitative comparison across ABS and PC/ABS material classes

The following table is a screening comparison of typical property bands for three material classes. The numbers are class-typical values extracted from ABS and PC/ABS processing literature and are not certified 938U lot limits. They should not be used for design stress calculations.

Grade-specific values for MAGNUM 938U, including lot tolerance limits, are supplied in the Trinseo material data sheet. Where regulatory verification is required, the product regulatory data sheet provides EU REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 declarations, EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU as amended, and any food-contact statements under Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR 177.1020. Part marking under ISO 11469:2016 is >ABS<.

When hot-runner residence time becomes the controlling constraint in high-volume moulding

Hot-runner moulds with valve-gate drops and long manifold residence time require more precise thermal control for 938U than for unmodified ABS. The UV-stabiliser degradation products can form mould deposit on the cavity surface when the melt is held above 260 °C in dead spots. This deposition is not an immediate failure of mechanical properties but appears as gloss difference on the moulded surface after extended runs. Production-scale observations on two-drop valve gates with 8 mm diameter runner channels indicate that lowering the hot-runner setpoint from 260 °C to 240 °C reduces colour shift after 72 h of continuous operation. A hot-runner temperature profile no more than 10 °C above the nozzle temperature is therefore a practical starting condition. The UV package should not be combined with amine-based flame-retardant additives because amine chemistry can antagonise the light stabiliser and accelerate colour shift. The resin should be purged with a commercial acrylic or general-purpose ABS purging compound before shutdown; polycarbonate purge at high temperature is avoided because it can generate a phase-separated interface that complicates colour change.

On a cowl-vent grille subjected to solar irradiation and stone impact, the component is moulded from 938U with a black grained surface, a nominal wall of 2.5 mm, and a single edge gate. The moulded-in stress at the gate creates a weld line on the upper surface. Raising mould temperature to 60 °C and using sequential valve-gating instead of the edge gate reduces the weld-line depth and improves notched Izod impact by 10% to 20% in laboratory specimens compared with the single gate. Accelerated weathering of the plaque specimens under ISO 4892-2 cycle 1 at 0.35 W/m² and 340 nm for 1000 h is used to monitor batch-to-batch consistency of the UV package. Parts that will be exposed to continuous service above 70 °C should be evaluated against a heat-stabilised ABS or PC/ABS before release.
