    More Introduction

Trinseo ABS MAGNUM 8391X is a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer resin modified with a discrete polybutadiene-based elastomer phase. The product is manufactured by continuous mass polymerisation, which reduces residual emulsifier species relative to emulsion ABS and yields a lower yellowness index under ASTM E313-20. Melt characterisation under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C and 10 kg gives a melt volume-flow rate of 21 cm³/10 min. Density is 1.05 g/cm³ when tested according to ISO 1183-1:2019. These values locate the grade in a high-flow region for ABS, enabling thin-wall injection moulding without an unusual increase in elastomer content. The grade is specified for cosmetic appliance shrouds, automotive interior trim, and small electronic housings where surface quality, dimensional stability, and filling of wall stocks below 1.5 mm are evaluated together.

Representative values from injection-moulded specimens conditioned at 23 °C and 50 % RH for 24 h are shown in Table 1. The figures are not specification limits; lot certificates of analysis control specific limits for approved applications.

Rheologically, the grade exhibits pseudoplastic behaviour. Capillary rheometry at 240 °C under ISO 11443:2021 shows apparent shear viscosity near 120 Pa·s at 1000 s⁻¹ and 45 Pa·s at 5000 s⁻¹. This shear-thinning response is important for multi-cavity filling because it allows pressure reduction as shear rate increases in thin gates. The polybutadiene particle-size distribution is adjusted to retain impact strength without excessive melt elasticity; excessive elasticity can produce jetting and gate blush in parts with high length-to-thickness ratios.

In plants where ambient relative humidity remains above 60 %, pellets can exceed the recommended moisture limit within 1 h when left in open gaylords. Desiccant drying at 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h lowers moisture below 0.1 wt-% when the dryer dew point is below -30 °C. At moisture contents above 0.1 wt-%, screw recovery time remains approximately unchanged, but tensile elongation at yield under ISO 527-2:2012 may fall by 5 % to 10 % and visual splay is commonly observed at the gate. Drying above 90 °C or beyond 6 h is not recommended: the polybutadiene phase can undergo thermal oxidation, shifting yellowness index upward under ASTM E313-20 and reducing notched impact energy under ISO 179-1/1eA:2010.

What Distinguishes MAGNUM 8391X from Medium-Flow ABS and Heat-Resistant Grades?

Standard medium-flow ABS grades used for comparable appliance parts often operate in the 5 cm³/10 min to 12 cm³/10 min melt volume-flow range under ISO 1133-1:2022. Those grades require melt temperatures above 240 °C and cavity pressures often above 100 MPa to fill wall stocks of 1.0 mm. MAGNUM 8391X lowers the SAN continuous-phase molecular weight by controlled chain transfer, which reduces shear viscosity but maintains sufficient elastomer content to deliver a notched Charpy impact of 25 kJ/m² at 23 °C under ISO 179-1/1eA:2010. In contrast, heat-resistant ABS grades built with α-methylstyrene raise Vicat softening temperature above 105 °C under ISO 306/B50:2022 but show melt volume-flow rates below 8 cm³/10 min and a stronger yellow tint. MAGNUM 8391X has a Vicat softening temperature of 96 °C, which is suited to interior automotive and appliance environments but is not a replacement for high-heat ABS in components subjected to continuous service above 90 °C under load.

Because Trinseo MAGNUM grades are mass-polymerised, the elastomer phase is cross-linked during polymerisation and remains in discrete domains. This morphology gives lower gel content and better base colour than many emulsion ABS grades, but it can also produce a different impact-strength response at very low temperatures. Published data for direct comparative property retention of this specific grade after long-term heat ageing is limited; qualification against the final part specification is required where heat ageing exceeds 500 h at 80 °C.

When Cavity Pressure Exceeds 120 MPa in Thin-Wall Multi-Cavity Tools

In multi-cavity tools with runner lengths above 150 mm and wall thickness of 1.0 mm, cavity pressure can reach 120 MPa during the filling stage. The recommended melt temperature is 230 °C to 250 °C; at 220 °C, viscosity increases sufficiently to raise short-shot frequency unless injection velocity is reduced, which then increases cycle time. At melt temperatures above 260 °C, residence time should not exceed 10 min because oxidation of the polybutadiene phase produces yellowing and lowers notched Charpy impact under ISO 179-1/1eA:2010. A typical barrel profile is 200 °C, 220 °C, 230 °C, 240 °C, with the nozzle at 240 °C. Holding pressure is set between 60 % and 80 % of peak injection pressure; for a wall stock of 1.2 mm, gate freeze time is commonly 4 s to 8 s. On a 1200 kN injection moulding machine with a 25 mm, 20:1 L/D screw, these conditions support stable filling at cushion positions of 2 mm to 5 mm.

High-gloss surfaces are obtained by replication of polished tool topography rather than by polishable coatings. Cavity surfaces with arithmetic mean roughness Ra below 0.05 µm produce 60° gloss values of 90 GU or higher under ASTM D523-14. Below a mould surface temperature of 40 °C, the frozen skin layer thickens before cavity details are fully replicated, reducing local gloss and increasing the visibility of weld lines. Raising mould temperature from 30 °C to 60 °C increases 60° gloss by up to 8 GU and improves the appearance of gas traps, but extends cooling time by 10 s to 15 s for wall stocks between 1.2 mm and 2.0 mm. Mould temperature should be controlled with water or pressurised water up to 120 °C where high gloss is specified; oil heating is not required for this grade.

Regrind addition up to 20 wt-% is acceptable for non-appearance components if the regrind is dry and free of contamination. For high-gloss surfaces, regrind content above 10 wt-% can lower 60° gloss under ASTM D523-14 by 2 GU to 5 GU and raise yellowness index under ASTM E313-20 because of thermal history. Multiple re-granulation cycles should be validated by melt volume-flow rate and notched impact tests under ISO 1133-1:2022 and ISO 179-1/1eA:2010 before production release. Carrier resins for colour masterbatches should be SAN or ABS-based; polyolefin carriers are incompatible and can delaminate at the surface. Masterbatch let-down ratios of 2 wt-% to 4 wt-% are common. Liquid colour can be used but must be evaluated for screw slippage and melt pressure stability on machines with 18:1 to 22:1 L/D screws.

Chemical Resistance Boundaries and Regulatory Status

Chemical resistance is typical of an ABS two-phase system. Dilute aqueous acids, bases, and aliphatic hydrocarbons are tolerated at ambient temperature, but continuous exposure to ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, or chlorinated solvents can cause stress cracking, especially at moulded-in strain above 0.5 % as measured under ISO 22088-1:2021. The product is not classified as a food-contact material by default; converter-specific migration testing under 21 CFR 178.2010 is required where food-contact status is claimed. Regulatory documentation is issued under REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU recast (EU) 2015/863. For outdoor exposure, the unpigmented grade is not recommended without an added UV stabilizer package. Published data for outdoor weathering of this specific compound configuration is limited; accelerated weathering should be qualified against ISO 4892-2:2024 for the final pigmented formulation.
