Trinseo ABS MAGNUM 8391M is a mass-polymerised acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding resin supplied within the MAGNUM portfolio. The grade is classified as a medium-impact, high-flow, high-gloss formulation for injection-moulded components in appliance, consumer-electronics, automotive-interior, and general-purpose housing applications. Specification conformance is normally expressed through ISO 1133-1:2022 melt volume-flow rate at 220 °C/10 kg, ISO 527-2 tensile properties at 23 °C, ISO 179-1/1eA Charpy notched impact at 23 °C, ISO 306/B50 Vicat softening temperature, and ISO 1183-1 density. The producer’s published data for this specific configuration is limited; exact numerical values should therefore be verified against the current Trinseo technical datasheet and the lot certificate of analysis rather than reproduced from secondary sources.
Mass polymerisation, as applied to MAGNUM 8391M, avoids the emulsifiers and coagulants used in emulsion ABS manufacture. The resulting resin exhibits lower gel content, lower water-soluble ionic residue, and a lighter inherent base colour than many medium-impact emulsion ABS grades. These features are relevant in high-gloss, light-coloured mouldings where plate-out, streaking, and yellowness can be traced to residual soap or coagulant. Under ISO 527-2 conditioning, differences in rubber-phase crosslink density may produce a more favourable balance of tensile yield and melt fluidity; direct comparative values require lot-matched testing. The absence of emulsifier residues also reduces the risk of mould deposit formation during extended production runs of white or tinted parts.
Injection-moulding operations running MAGNUM 8391M on reciprocating-screw machines with screw diameters between 25 mm and 80 mm begin with desiccant drying. Pre-drying at 80 ± 5 °C for 2 h to 4 h reduces moisture below 0.02 wt% when measured by ISO 15512:2019. Dew-point performance of the dryer should remain at or below −30 °C. Short shots, splay, and internal weld-line porosity observed on production lines are frequently traced to moisture contents above 0.05 wt%, particularly after storage at relative humidity above 60 %. Overdrying beyond 6 h at elevated temperature may shift melt-flow behaviour and increase yellowness index during long residence-time moulding.
A general-purpose 20:1 to 24:1 L/D single-stage screw with a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 is common for MAGNUM 8391M. Barrel temperatures from feed to nozzle are commonly set from 230 °C to 245 °C in the feed zone, 240 °C to 255 °C in compression, and 250 °C to 270 °C at the nozzle. Screw peripheral speed is normally limited to 0.15 m/s to 0.35 m/s, with back pressure maintained between 0.5 MPa and 1.5 MPa. Higher back pressure increases melt homogeneity but raises residence-time and shear-heating risk. At melt temperatures above 270 °C or residence times over 5 min, yellowing and impact loss can occur; gas generation may also increase. When a shutdown is longer than 10 min, the barrel is purged with cast acrylic or styrenic material until the previous resin is displaced. Non-return valve leakage on worn screw tips produces inconsistent cushion control and must be corrected before processing this grade.
The table below lists the primary specification methods applied to this ABS grade in technical documentation. Cell values are test conditions, not lot-specific measured properties.
| Property | Test standard | Test condition | Reported unit |

| Charpy notched impact | ISO 179-1/1eA | 23 °C, 4 mm | kJ/m² |
| Vicat softening temperature | ISO 306/B50 | 50 N, 50 °C/h | °C |

High-gloss fascia panels, vacuum-cleaner housings, small-appliance bezels, and automotive interior trim plates are common application fields. For high-gloss surfaces, mould-temperature uniformity is more critical than absolute temperature; surface-temperature differences greater than 5 °C across the cavity can create visible gloss banding even when packing pressure is constant. Chromium-plated or polished tool steels with vent depths of 0.02 mm to 0.03 mm and gate diameters of at least 0.8 mm are used to prevent jetting and entrapped air marks. Hot-runner systems should be externally heated with no dead-flow regions because stagnant melt degrades rapidly and transfers dark specks to visible surfaces.
MAGNUM 8391M is not formulated for continuous service at elevated temperatures above typical ABS limits. Components requiring Vicat B50 values beyond 100 °C or heat-deflection performance above 85 °C at 1.82 MPa should be evaluated against high-heat ABS grades or PC/ABS blends. Similarly, exterior unpainted applications with direct ultraviolet exposure are better served by weatherable ASA or UV-stabilised ABS under ISO 4892-2 accelerated weathering. The medium-impact classification also sets a lower Charpy notched impact ceiling than high-impact ABS grades; thin-wall parts below 2.0 mm nominal wall may require a higher-rubber grade for ductile failure at sub-ambient temperatures. In applications requiring low-gloss or textured surfaces, mould gloss reduction can be achieved by tool-surface roughness adjustments, but grade substitution to a lower-gloss ABS may be more reliable than extensive tooling rework.
Mould deposit and odour behaviour in mass ABS differ from emulsion ABS. Production-scale experience indicates that MAGNUM 8391M generates less mould plate-out on polished tool surfaces during extended runs of white or coloured parts. Volatile emission from melt is typically lower than emulsion ABS of comparable flow, but local ventilation and thermal degradation monitoring remain necessary. When barrel temperatures exceed 270 °C or residence time exceeds 5 min, degradation by-products deposit on the nozzle tip and can cause splay or black speck contamination in subsequent shots. The use of a nozzle thermocouple and pyrometer checks at the melt stream is recommended to avoid operating outside the stated melt-temperature boundary.
Shrinkage and dimensional control for MAGNUM 8391M are governed by mould temperature, packing pressure, and gate freeze time. Typical injection moulding lines achieve lower post-mould warpage when packing pressure is maintained until gate freeze rather than reduced at a fixed timer. For flat cosmetic parts, packing pressures between 30 % and 60 % of maximum injection pressure and cooling times based on 8 mm to 10 mm effective wall thickness are used as starting points. Dimensional stability is then verified under ISO 294-4 after conditioning at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity for 24 h. No separate annealing step is normally required for interior components, but parts exposed to intermittent heat peaks above 70 °C should be evaluated for dimensional change.
Regulatory documentation for MAGNUM 8391M is maintained under REACH 1907/2006, RoHS 2011/65/EU as amended, and applicable national chemical inventories. Processing and end-use compliance should be confirmed with the current safety data sheet. The material is not considered food-contact approved by default; any food-contact application must be validated against the relevant national or regional food-contact regulation, for example FDA 21 CFR where applicable, using migration testing appropriate to the final part geometry and food type. Published data for this specific configuration is limited for food-contact and medical-use scenarios; suitability must be established through end-use testing rather than inferred from generic ABS status.
