Trinseo MAGNUM 8391 is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin supplied in pellet form for injection moulding. The grade is classified as a medium-impact ABS formulated around controlled melt fluidity, high surface gloss, and dimensional stability in thin-section parts. Primary application areas include automotive interior trim, appliance housings, and consumer electronic enclosures where the part must balance impact resistance with visual surface quality. Relative to high-impact ABS grades, the product positions the butadiene modifier content at an intermediate level, shifting the property envelope toward lower melt viscosity and more reproducible gloss while accepting reduced very low-temperature ductility.
The melt mass-flow rate is reported at 21 g/10 min when measured in accordance with ISO 1133-1 at 220 °C under a 10 kg piston load. This flow classification supports fast cavity filling, but the practical processing window remains governed by melt temperature, mould temperature, drying state, and hold-pressure profile. A melt temperature of 240 °C to 260 °C and a mould temperature of 40 °C to 80 °C are baseline ranges for injection moulding; surface-gloss-critical parts typically require the upper mould-temperature range of 60 °C to 80 °C. Pre-drying in a desiccant-bed dryer at 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h is required to reduce residual moisture below 0.05 wt%. At ambient relative humidity above 60%, open conveying time should be minimized or a hopper dryer with dew point below -20 °C should be used to prevent moisture reacquisition, silver streaking, and surface blush. A general-purpose screw with L/D of 20:1 to 24:1 and compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 is adequate for homogenization. A back pressure of 3 MPa to 5 MPa assists melt-temperature uniformity without excessive shear heating. Clamp force requirements for this flow class are commonly 3 kN/cm² to 5 kN/cm² of projected area.
Relative to high-impact ABS grades, the butadiene phase in MAGNUM 8391 is controlled at an intermediate concentration. Notched Charpy impact strength is reported at 17 kJ/m² at 23 °C and 8 kJ/m² at -30 °C when tested according to ISO 179-1/1eA. High-impact ABS grades may exceed 25 kJ/m² at 23 °C, but those systems frequently carry a melt-flow penalty and may develop greater gloss variation on complex mould surfaces. The 21 g/10 min melt mass-flow rate of MAGNUM 8391 permits reduced injection fill times, lower residual flow orientation, and more uniform packing in ribs and bosses. Against low-gloss or mineral-filled ABS grades, the material avoids matting agents and inorganic fillers, which preserves surface reflectance and colour saturation but reduces modulus and heat-deflection temperature compared with talc-filled or glass-filled systems. Because butadiene phase content is below high-impact grades, low-temperature impact is the principal trade-off. Direct comparison with other ABS products requires identical specimen preparation and test standards; published data comparing MAGNUM 8391 with mineral-filled ABS under identical mould texturing conditions is limited, so surface-quality differentiation must be validated on production tooling rather than inferred from pellet properties alone.
Short-term mechanical properties determined according to ISO 527-2/50 at 50 mm/min report a tensile stress at yield of 46 MPa, a tensile modulus of 2300 MPa, and a tensile strain at break of 15%. Flexural testing in accordance with ISO 178 gives a flexural strength of 70 MPa and a flexural modulus of 2400 MPa. Density is reported at 1.05 g/cm³ per ISO 1183. Mould shrinkage is typically in the range 0.4% to 0.7% under standard injection moulding conditions, but cavity-specific anisotropy must be evaluated on prototype tooling. The stiffness level positions MAGNUM 8391 above unfilled commodity ABS but below filled polypropylene or polycarbonate blends for load-bearing brackets. Snap-fit covers and non-structural interior trim are within the mechanical envelope when the design accounts for notch sensitivity and moulded-in stress.

The values in the table are typical laboratory data, not minimum specification limits. Batch-to-batch variation and pigment loading may shift individual results. For any regulated application, the final part must be tested to the relevant standard.
In moulded parts with wall thickness below 1.5 mm, flow length and gate pressure are governed by melt rheology rather than by part weight alone. The relative flow classification of 21 g/10 min under 220 °C and 10 kg is not a substitute for cavity-specific pressure data. Fast injection velocities of 150 mm/s to 300 mm/s with a profiled transfer from filling to holding pressure assist gloss retention. Mould temperature control should be zone-based with surface divergence no greater than ±5 °C; larger thermal gradients produce differential shrinkage and visible gloss bands. Weld-line depth is generally lower than in high-viscosity ABS grades because flow-front temperature decreases more slowly, but weld-line strength remains below that of the un-welded base resin. For structural ribs, a root radius of 0.5 mm to 0.75 mm and a rib thickness of 50% to 60% of the adjoining wall reduce sink-mark formation without excessive cycle-time extension. Published spiral-flow length data for MAGNUM 8391 in thin-wall configurations is limited; moulders should generate spiral-flow curves on the specific machine and hot-runner system rather than extrapolate from melt-flow index.
Thermal endurance data indicate a Vicat softening temperature of 98 °C measured to ISO 306/B50 and a heat deflection temperature of 92 °C at 1.80 MPa according to ISO 75-2/A. Flammability classification is UL 94 HB at the thickness evaluated in the manufacturer’s published data; this classification does not imply suitability for electrical enclosures requiring V-0 or 5VA ratings. Continuous-use temperature in air is not a formal ISO rating for ABS, but applications above approximately 85 °C require creep, chemical-aging, and dimensional-stability validation. Prolonged contact with hot water above 70 °C can reduce surface gloss and embrittle the surface because unmodified ABS is not hydrolytically stable. Chemical contact with ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, and concentrated oxidizing acids can induce environmental stress cracking; compatibility with production-line cleaning agents and assembly lubricants must be verified on stressed parts.
Under European regulatory frameworks, the grade is typically positioned as an industrial and consumer article resin. RoHS recast 2011/65/EU and REACH EC No 1907/2006 compliance may be declared by the resin producer for the pellet form, but finished-article compliance remains the responsibility of the downstream manufacturer. No food-contact or medical-grade statement should be inferred without grade-specific certification. For automotive interior applications, volatile organic compound and fogging behaviour must be evaluated on the final part according to VDA 278 or OEM-specific methods; published data for this specific grade in all cabin configurations is limited.
Production-scale handling of regrind requires moisture control, granulate uniformity, and documented addition rate. Regrind additions up to 20 wt% are commonly evaluated in ABS moulding operations, but published data for MAGNUM 8391 at higher regrind fractions is limited. Sprues and runners should be granulated with a screen size of 6 mm to 8 mm and blended uniformly with virgin pellets to avoid compositional drift. In plants where relative humidity exceeds 60%, closed conveying and hopper drying are required because moisture reacquisition creates surface blush and silver streaking. Screw recovery time should be set to use 70% to 80% of maximum screw speed to avoid unnecessary shear heating; melt temperature measured by a needle pyrometer should not exceed 260 °C. Residence time at melt temperature should remain below 10 min to limit yellowing and impact loss. If residence time exceeds 10 min, purging with a transition material is required before restart.
Automotive interior trim applications are evaluated through aesthetic and durability protocols, including scratch and mar resistance, fogging, grain retention, and thermal cycling. MAGNUM 8391 has been positioned for interior trim because its melt viscosity supports large thin-wall mouldings while retaining the surface class required by OEM grain specifications; published data on mar resistance under PV 3952 or OEM-specific methods for this exact grade is limited. For appliance housings and consumer electronics, dimensional stability is typically evaluated after thermal cycling from -30 °C to 80 °C. The material is not inherently UV-stabilized for prolonged exterior exposure; weatherable grades or coatings are required for exterior components.
