Trinseo MAGNUM 4491 is a mass-polymerised acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection moulding resin supplied as cylindrical pellets for thin-wall technical components. Unlike emulsion ABS grades, the continuous mass process yields a low residual surfactant level, which reduces deposit formation on mould venting surfaces and improves colour consistency during long production runs. Typical published datasheet values include a density of 1.05 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1:2019, a melt volume-flow rate of 21 cm³/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg under ISO 1133-1:2022, and moulding shrinkage of 0.4–0.7 % under ISO 294-4:2018. The melt mass-flow rate is approximately 22 g/10 min; direct verification against the certificate of analysis is required before establishing production parameters.
From a composition standpoint, the material is based on a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer continuous phase with dispersed polybutadiene rubber particles. In mass ABS of this class, polybutadiene content generally lies between 15 wt% and 25 wt%, and acrylonitrile content in the SAN phase is typically 24–26 wt%; the specific formulation of MAGNUM 4491 is proprietary. The continuous process yields a low-gel network and a controlled rubber particle size distribution, which affects the balance between melt flow and impact strength. Capillary rheometry on comparable mass ABS places the flow activation energy over 230–260 °C at approximately 50–60 kJ/mol, lower than that of polycarbonate and requiring narrow melt-temperature control to avoid viscosity variation across the shot.
Because the grade is hygroscopic, closed-loop desiccant drying is required before plastication. Moisture equilibrium at 23 °C and 50 % RH is near 0.25 wt%, while at 80 % RH it approaches 0.6 wt%. Pellets exposed to humid air for more than 30 min can develop surface moisture that causes splay even if core moisture is low. Pre-drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h in a desiccant dryer with a dew point below −30 °C is mandatory; at ambient relative humidity above 60 %, dwell time should be extended to 4–6 h. Drying temperatures above 95 °C should be avoided because pellet agglomeration can occur in the feed hopper, causing bridging and feed interruptions.
At melt temperature 240 °C, capillary rheometry on comparable mass ABS grades indicates apparent viscosity near 80 Pa·s at 1000 s⁻¹ and approximately 350 Pa·s at 100 s⁻¹. A shear-thinning exponent of about 0.55 between 100 s⁻¹ and 1000 s⁻¹ is observed. These values guide gate shear rate selection: edge gates should be sized to keep shear rate below 50 000 s⁻¹, while hot-runner valve gates in polished cavities may require injection velocities above 120 mm/s for wall sections thinner than 1.5 mm to prevent premature skin solidification.
On a 1000 kN hydraulic toggle injection moulding machine with a 35 mm general-purpose screw and L/D 20:1, melt temperature is to be kept between 230 °C and 260 °C. Mould wall temperature is set between 40 °C and 80 °C; the lower portion of this range shortens cycle time but can reduce gloss and increase moulded-in stress near gate areas. Screw back pressure is set between 0.3 MPa and 0.7 MPa, and recovery rotation speed is limited to 80 min⁻¹ to limit frictional heat generation. A screw compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 with a clean check ring reduces dead spots and black speck formation. Packing pressure between 60 % and 80 % of peak injection pressure for 3–6 s minimises sink marks in ribs and bosses, and a cushion of 2–4 mm is recommended.
Thermal degradation of the polybutadiene phase occurs when melt temperature exceeds 280 °C or when residence time at 250 °C surpasses 10 min; purging with SAN or general-purpose ABS is required during interruptions. Vent depth is not to exceed 0.03 mm to prevent flash, and vent land lengths below 1.5 mm are used to allow air escape. Spiral-flow results at 230 °C and 800 bar injection pressure for a 2 mm channel are typically in the range of 40–50 cm for comparable high-flow ABS; direct lot-specific values should be confirmed because spiral-flow length depends on mould surface finish, gate geometry, and machine hydraulic response.
Representative mechanical properties of injection-moulded test specimens include tensile modulus of 2400 MPa under ISO 527-2/1:2012, tensile yield stress of 44 MPa under ISO 527-2/50:2012, and nominal strain at break of 12 %. Flexural modulus is 2350 MPa and flexural strength is 68 MPa under ISO 178:2019. Charpy notched impact strength under ISO 179-1/1eA:2010 is 18 kJ/m² at 23 °C and 8 kJ/m² at −30 °C. Vicat softening temperature VST/B50 under ISO 306:2022 is 96 °C; heat deflection temperature under ISO 75-2/A:2020 at 1.80 MPa is 85 °C. Values are typical for natural colour and may shift by 5–10 % in heavily pigmented or filled variants.
In production equipment, MAGNUM 4491 is used for vacuum cleaner shrouds, small appliance control panels, and electrical enclosure fronts with nominal wall thickness between 1.2 mm and 2.5 mm. The combination of heat deflection temperature at 1.80 MPa of 85 °C and Charpy notched impact strength of 18 kJ/m² at 23 °C suits parts exposed to brief contact with external surfaces up to 75 °C; continuous load-bearing design must keep strain below 2.0 % to avoid stress whitening at knit lines. For snap-fit geometries, the yield stress of 44 MPa and tensile modulus of 2400 MPa require generous radii and uniform wall thickness to prevent notch sensitivity. Short shots in sections below 1.0 mm usually indicate melt temperature below 230 °C, cavity wall temperature below 40 °C, or insufficient venting. Gate blush on polished surfaces is controlled by reducing initial injection velocity below 250 mm/s and using a two-stage fill profile with a short initial stage of 40–60 % of maximum velocity.
At regrind levels above 20 wt%, melt viscosity shifts downward and yellowing increases; regrind from hot-runner systems should be sieved and dried separately. The resin is normally rated UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm; applications requiring V-0 at the same thickness need a flame-retarded MAGNUM grade. Mechanical recycling of sprues and runners is standard, but the use of external post-consumer ABS is not covered by typical lot certification and must be validated for each mould. Resistance to dilute acids, alkalis, and many aliphatic hydrocarbons is characteristic of ABS, but oxygenated solvents such as methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate, and concentrated acetic acid attack the SAN phase. Environmental stress-cracking resistance under constant strain should be tested according to ISO 22088-3:2005 when components are exposed to cleaning agents or plasticiser-containing PVC gaskets. At continuous exposure above 60 °C, stabiliser depletion accelerates yellowing; unpainted parts are not recommended for direct outdoor service because UV exposure causes surface chalking and loss of gloss within 12 months.
Grade selection within the MAGNUM family depends on rheology, rubber particle size, and surface gloss. MAGNUM 4491 is a high-flow medium-impact injection moulding grade with high surface reproduction. It differs from MAGNUM 3416 SC, an electroplating grade, because electroplating versions are formulated with higher butadiene content and controlled rubber particle size to allow chromium adhesion after etching; the trade-off is lower tensile modulus and reduced heat deflection temperature compared with 4491 under ISO 527-2/1:2012 and ISO 75-2/A:2020. Substituting 4491 into electroplating tools designed for MAGNUM 3416 SC can produce plate blistering after thermal cycling due to lower adhesive surface area. Published direct comparative data for these two grades under identical specimen preparation are limited; certificate-of-analysis review is necessary for substitution decisions.
Low-gloss MAGNUM grades are designed for automotive interior surfaces where 60° gloss units are reduced and mar resistance is enhanced. MAGNUM 4491 does not provide the same low-sheen surface; its moulded gloss is higher and more sensitive to mould polish, so exterior automotive or matte applications require a different grade or secondary coating. Compared with a general-purpose ABS of lower MVR, 4491 fills thinner sections at lower injection pressure but has slightly lower low-temperature impact because of its reduced molecular weight. The −30 °C Charpy notched impact strength of 8 kJ/m² under ISO 179-1/1eA:2010 defines a boundary for freezer-door furniture or outdoor enclosures; below this temperature, embrittlement risk increases and high-impact or cold-temperature grades should be selected.
For colour-compounded or pre-coloured lots, the mass-polymerised base gives greater colour consistency and lower plate-out than emulsion ABS grades. However, MAGNUM 4491 is not supplied as a food-contact or medical-grade material unless explicitly confirmed by Trinseo regulatory documentation for the specific application and extraction testing. Under EC 1907/2006, the polymer itself is exempt from registration as a substance, but monomers and additives must be registered. Compliance with 2011/65/EU RoHS must be verified by lot-specific documentation when moulded electrical and electronic parts are placed on the EU market. Flammability remains a limiting boundary: the typical UL 94 HB rating at 1.5 mm does not satisfy enclosures requiring V-0 without flame-retarded modification or additional metal shielding.
