    More Introduction

Trinseo MAGNUM 4490 is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection molding grade supplied in pellet form for rigid parts requiring a controlled balance of melt fluidity, surface gloss, and room-temperature impact resistance. The material is not a direct viscosity reduction of general-purpose ABS; the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix and grafted polybutadiene rubber phase are formulated to retain melt homogeneity under high shear. On production lines using 80 t to 120 t toggle-clamp injection machines and 20 mm to 25 mm diameter general-purpose ABS screws, observed nozzle melt temperatures are typically maintained between 240 °C and 260 °C, with mold surface temperatures of 50 °C to 70 °C. These setpoints assume a heated mold circuit and a shot weight occupying 40 % to 60 % of barrel capacity. Density is reported under ISO 1183-1:2019 at 1.04 g/cm³. Melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C/10 kg is listed as 21 cm³/10 min. This fluidity permits thin-wall filling down to 1.0 mm with lower gate pressure, but it narrows the hold-pressure optimization window relative to medium-flow ABS grades.

These values are nominal and apply to injection-molded specimens conditioned at 23 °C ± 2 °C and 50 % relative humidity for 40 h unless otherwise noted. They are not release limits; lot-specific certificates of analysis control incoming acceptance. The tensile and flexural moduli are secant values.

How Does MAGNUM 4490 Differ from Medium-Flow and High-Heat ABS Grades?

Compared with medium-flow ABS grades having melt volume-flow rates below 12 cm³/10 min, MAGNUM 4490 requires lower injection pressure in multi-cavity hot-runner tooling but exhibits reduced room-temperature notched impact when regrind content exceeds 20 wt%. In a production comparison on a 6-cavity plaque mold with 2 mm nominal wall thickness, peak injection pressure fell from approximately 90 MPa to 68 MPa when the medium-flow lot was replaced by MAGNUM 4490 at the same melt temperature. Notched Izod impact of regrind-containing material declined by approximately 15 % relative to virgin feedstock under the same cavity geometry and barrel inventory. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, so the figures should be treated as line-specific observations rather than universal design values.

The grade is not intended for continuous load-bearing service above 95 °C. Heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa is 94 °C, which places it below high-heat ABS grades designed for 100 °C to 110 °C service. For components requiring dimensional stability at elevated continuous temperatures, a high-heat ABS or PC/ABS blend should be specified. MAGNUM 4490 also does not contain the UV-stabilizing package required for unpainted outdoor exposure. ASA, AES, or externally painted ABS systems are preferred for exterior weatherable applications.

At ambient relative humidity above 60 %, pre-drying is mandatory. Desiccant dryer setpoints of 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h with a dew point below −30 °C reduce absorbed moisture to a target below 0.05 wt%. Insufficient drying produces splay and silver-streak defects in hot-runner drops and lowers melt quality at the gate. In high-humidity molding regions, closed-loop conveying with dry-air purge is required because pellets reabsorb moisture from ambient air rapidly after leaving the dryer. The exact reabsorption rate depends on pellet surface area and ambient dew point; published data for this specific configuration is limited. Hopper dryers without desiccant beds are insufficient when the dew point exceeds −10 °C.

When Hot-Runner Manifold Temperature Control Becomes the Limiting Process Variable

External hot-runner manifolds with setpoints above 260 °C accelerate thermal degradation of the polybutadiene phase even if the machine barrel remains within the recommended range. Degradation appears as yellowing and a decline in notched impact at unchanged tensile yield stress. Production trials on a 4-drop valve-gated system with a manifold temperature of 270 °C showed a 10 % to 12 % loss in Charpy notched impact after 15 min residence time compared with material held at 245 °C. Thermocouple placement is critical: internal shear heating at the gate can raise local melt temperature by 8 °C to 15 °C above the manifold setpoint. A manifold setpoint of 245 °C to 255 °C is preferred, with gate geometry adjusted to avoid shear rates above 10,000 s⁻¹.

Melt residence time below 8 min at 250 °C is recommended. In machines where barrel capacity exceeds 50 % of shot weight, material remains in the melt channel longer and notched impact retention after recycling falls below 85 % after three heat histories. The polybutadiene phase is the primary degradation site. Oxidation at pellet surfaces during storage can also lower whiteness and generate black specks. Regrind should be limited to 20 wt% unless the part is not impact-critical. If a hot-runner manifold is used, regrind fraction should be reduced to 10 wt% because additional residence history amplifies gel-particle formation and gate stringing.

Why Is Regrind Fraction a More Sensitive Control Than Barrel Temperature?

At a given melt temperature, minor changes in regrind fraction alter the molecular-weight distribution of the material entering the cavity. Virgin MAGNUM 4490 exhibits a stable shear-thinning response under capillary testing, but the presence of oxidized polybutadiene domains from recycled material creates local viscosity instabilities. These instabilities are observed on a 25 mm diameter injection screw as screw-recovery time variation exceeding 0.3 s at constant back pressure. The resulting shot-weight variation can exceed 0.4 %, which is significant in valve-gated multi-cavity tools with small runners. Barrel temperature changes of 5 °C produce a smaller effect on shot consistency than a 10 wt% regrind addition. Therefore, regrind fraction should be controlled gravimetrically in high-surface-finish applications such as appliance fascias and cosmetic closures.

Gate placement should avoid knit lines at high tensile stress locations. Under ISO 527-2:2012 loading, weld line strength at a 2 mm wall is typically 70 % to 80 % of parent material strength. Raising mold temperature to 70 °C and increasing injection velocity to achieve cavity filling below 1 s improves flow-front merging. In thin-wall sections below 1.5 mm, sequential valve gating reduces air traps and improves cosmetic uniformity. Mold release agents containing silicone or hydrocarbon oils should be avoided when parts are destined for painting or plating because surface contamination reduces adhesion. Adhesion testing for painted ABS is performed according to ISO 2409 cross-cut method or ASTM D3359-17; grade-specific paint adhesion data must be obtained from the coatings supplier.

Under EU 2015/863 amending RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, the neat grade is typically declared compliant for restricted substances at the maximum concentration values applicable to homogeneous materials. The manufacturer issues an SVHC declaration under REACH. Food-contact status should not be assumed as a blanket FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 clearance; written confirmation for the final article and application is required. When flame-retardant or antistatic additives are introduced at the converter, regulatory status must be re-evaluated because the final article, not the neat resin, is subject to compliance. Processing aids such as zinc stearate at 0.05 wt% to 0.2 wt% can alter melt stability and color; these modifications are outside the standard grade datasheet coverage.

Compared with electroplating-grade ABS, MAGNUM 4490 has lower surface butadiene availability because it is formulated for gloss stability rather than palladium-tin catalyst absorption. Electroplated adhesion is therefore lower than that of dedicated plating ABS. If plating is required, a plating-grade ABS should be selected. Compared with flame-retardant ABS grades, this resin has lower density and better flow but is not rated for UL 94 V-0 at any thickness without additives. The performance difference is measured by ISO 180/1A notched impact and ISO 306 Vicat softening temperature, not by melt flow alone.
