Inside automated in-vitro diagnostic analysers, TOYOLAC MABS 982-X02 is specified for transparent access doors, reagent-bay sight windows, and sample-zone splash shields where optical clarity must survive frequent wiping with 70% isopropanol and dilute quaternary ammonium disinfectants. The material selection is governed less by tensile yield than by resistance to environmental stress cracking after repeated chemical exposure, light transmission above 88% at 2 mm thickness per ISO 13468-1:2019, and cytotoxicity limits under ISO 10993-5:2009. The relevant product-safety framework is IEC 61010-1:2010/AMD1:2016 for laboratory equipment, with biocompatibility assessment under ISO 10993-1:2018 and EU IVDR (EU) 2017/746 for the finished analyser. Formulation addition ratio in these components is 98.0–99.5 wt% virgin MABS 982-X02, 0.5–2.0 wt% optical-brightener or blue-tone colour masterbatch, and 0.1–0.3 wt% antistatic concentrate; post-industrial regrind from cold sprues is limited to 15 wt% because higher regrind fractions raise optical haze above 2.0% measured at 2 mm per ISO 14782:2021. Downstream production on all-electric injection-moulding machines with 20:1 L/D three-zone screws uses a barrel profile from 210°C to 240°C, mould temperature 50–65°C, and pre-drying at 80°C for 3–4 h to residual moisture ≤ 0.05%. Field data from multi-cavity valve-gated hot-runner tools indicate that optical haze increases when hot-runner residence time exceeds 10 min at 245°C, and yellowing becomes measurable as a b* shift above 1.0 after 15 min at 260°C. Terminal part types include haematology analyser access doors, clinical-chemistry reagent-bay windows, sample-zone splash shields, and immunoassay sample-carousel covers.
Sterilization validation records from multi-cavity tools running 8–16 cavities on all-electric injection presses indicate that the limiting factor is not impact retention but colour shift after gamma irradiation and stress-cracking resistance after repeated chemical sterilant exposure. TOYOLAC MABS 982-X02 satisfies the material-related biocompatibility test sequence under ISO 10993-5:2009 for MEM-elution cytotoxicity and USP <87> / USP <88> Class VI testing for skin-contact devices. Sterilisation validation is conducted under ISO 11137-1:2016 for gamma dose mapping and ISO 11135:2014 for ethylene oxide cycle validation, with finished-device sterility assurance level maintained at 10⁻⁶. Formulation addition ratio is 99.0–100 wt% neat MABS 982-X02; no slip agent above 0.05 wt% is introduced because higher levels compromise ultrasonic-welding amplitude response, and regrind for gamma-stabilised lots is restricted to 10 wt%. Downstream production uses a melt temperature window of 230–250°C, mould temperature 60–75°C, and holding pressure 60–80 MPa, followed by annealing at 65°C for 2 h to reduce moulded-in stress before sterilisation. Published data for this specific grade under gamma doses above 25 kGy are limited; comparable transparent MABS formulations show dose-dependent yellowness index increase, making 25 kGy a practical ceiling for colour-critical transparent housings unless the specification accepts higher yellowing. Operational boundaries include unsuitability for steam autoclave cycles above 121°C because the heat-deflection temperature of MABS remains below 85°C at 1.82 MPa per ISO 75-2:2013, and avoidance of continuous immersion in > 70% isopropanol due to stress-cracking initiation at low residual-stress regions. Terminal product types include endoscopic instrument handle windows, surgical stapler housing windows, catheter connector housings, and transparent monitor cases for point-of-care diagnostic carts.

When a cosmetics manufacturer shifts from polycarbonate to a styrenic clear grade for thick-walled jar bodies, the driving constraints are not heat resistance but alcohol-based formulation contact, high-gloss replication, and sink-mark control in wall thicknesses above 3.0 mm. TOYOLAC MABS 982-X02 is used in cosmetic packaging under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 for the finished cosmetic article, with material compliance assessed under REACH 1907/2006 Annex XVII and SVHC screening, while the finished packaging is not considered a food-contact article under EU 10/2011 unless separately validated for migration. Formulation addition ratio in clear jar bodies is 95–98 wt% MABS 982-X02 with 2–5 wt% PMMA-based colour masterbatch; a soft-touch TPE gasket is overmoulded at 35–40 Shore A and is not included in the MABS weight fraction. Downstream production uses cold-runner or valve-gated hot-runner injection moulding with melt temperature 225–240°C, mould temperature 60–70°C, and pack pressure profiled from 50 MPa to 30 MPa to avoid gate blush on thick cosmetic walls. High-gloss outer surfaces require mould polish to ≤ 0.025 µm Ra, and ethylene oxide or gamma sterilisation is not used in this segment. Process bottlenecks include flow hesitation at abrupt thickness changes, which produces visible reflection bands, and hot-runner tip temperatures above 250°C, which degrade the acrylic-rich phase and lower clarity. Terminal product types include airless pump bottle bodies, cream jar bodies, mascara casings, lipstick tube transparent shells, and refillable compact housings.
Detergent contact in dishwasher rinse-aid reservoirs imposes a different stress-cracking profile than impact-dominated appliance housings because the MABS wall is exposed to nonionic surfactants, rinse aids with pH 7–10, and intermittent heat from adjacent pump assemblies. TOYOLAC MABS 982-X02 is selected for such reservoirs under IEC 60335-1:2020 and the relevant part-two standard for dishwashers, with flame-retardant rating as UL 94 HB at 3.0 mm thickness; food-zone contact is not claimed unless the finished reservoir passes a separate migration study under NSF/ANSI 51 or equivalent. Formulation addition ratio is 100 wt% virgin MABS 982-X02 for transparent reservoirs, with optional UV-stabiliser masterbatch at 0.3–0.8 wt% for window exposure; regrind is limited to 10 wt% for transparent parts because higher levels shift the optical transmission below 85% at 2 mm. Downstream production uses injection moulding on hydraulic clamping units with 1,800–2,500 kN clamp force, melt temperature 230–240°C, mould temperature 60–70°C, and gate placement that avoids weld lines in seal-groove roots. A documented failure mode is environmental stress cracking when benzyl alcohol, glycol ethers, or undiluted bleach above 5% sodium hypochlorite contact the reservoir during cleaning; welded or adhesively bonded gaskets require plasma pre-treatment to raise surface energy above 45 mN/m. Terminal product types include dishwasher rinse-aid reservoirs, vacuum-cleaner dust-canister windows, washing-machine detergent drawer windows, and floor-care recovery tanks.
As moulders reduce wall thickness below 1.2 mm on electric-toothbrush display windows, the interaction between shear heating and mould temperature determines both light diffusion and dimensional stability. TOYOLAC MABS 982-X02 is applied in oral-care and personal-care windows under IEC 60335-1:2020, with UL flame classification as UL 94 HB at 3.0 mm; if the part contacts the oral mucosa, biocompatibility is assessed under ISO 10993-1:2018 and ISO 10993-5:2009. Formulation addition ratio is 97–99 wt% MABS 982-X02, 1–3 wt% PMMA microsphere light-diffuser masterbatch, and a 5–15 µm acrylic hardcoat applied post-moulding for scratch resistance. Thin-wall injection moulding uses injection speeds in the range 200–300 mm/s, packing pressure 80–100 MPa, mould temperature 60–70°C, and a valve-gate diameter of 0.8 mm, because larger gates extend gate-freeze time and create sink at the window perimeter. Pre-drying is mandatory at 80°C for 3–4 h to ≤ 0.05% moisture; moisture above 0.08% produces silver streaks and reduces light transmittance. Flow-induced birefringence at the gate region is controlled by keeping shear rate below 50,000 s⁻¹, and dimensional checks follow ISO 294-4:2018 for post-moulding shrinkage. Terminal product types include electric-toothbrush handle windows, water-flosser reservoir windows, electric-shaver guard windows, and light-guide covers for dermatological home-use devices.
Optical barcode scanner windows in point-of-sale terminals are governed less by transmission than by low haze and low birefringence after polycarbonate replacement, because the window sits directly in the laser or LED optical path. TOYOLAC MABS 982-X02 is specified under IEC 62368-1:2018 for information-technology and point-of-sale equipment, with material compliance under RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and UL 94 HB at 3.0 mm. Formulation addition ratio for scanner windows is 100 wt% neat MABS 982-X02; no regrind, no external lubricants, and no colour concentrates are introduced because each additive can raise internal haze above 2.0% at 2 mm measured per ISO 14782:2021. Downstream production uses injection-compression moulding to reduce birefringence, with a compression stroke of 0.3–0.8 mm, mould temperature 70–80°C, and cooling time adjusted to maintain a surface-gloss change below 5% measured at 60° per ISO 2813:2014. A documented production defect is flow-line visibility near the gate caused by melt-temperature variation greater than ±3°C, which produces local refractive-index variation and scanner read errors at the retail checkout. Terminal product types include barcode-scanner windows, point-of-sale display windows, office-printer control-panel lenses, and optical sensor covers in automated dispensing kiosks.

Toray TOYOLAC® MABS 982-X02 is a methyl methacrylate–acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene copolymer supplied as a transparent injection-molding grade for thin-wall parts that require optical clarity, high surface gloss, and controlled melt flow. The methyl methacrylate comonomer modifies the refractive index of the styrenic matrix and contributes to the visual transparency not available in general-purpose ABS. Typical application areas include diagnostic device housings, cosmetic packaging, consumer electronics covers, and transparent medical equipment enclosures. Because the 982-X02 designation is grade-specific and may vary by color, lot, and additive package, the following data are representative operational ranges drawn from TOYOLAC MABS platform literature and should not replace the certificate of analysis for the purchased lot.

| Light transmittance, 3 mm | ASTM D1003-13 | 87–91% |
| Haze, 3 mm | ASTM D1003-13 | 1.5–4.0% |
The optical values assume a polished mold surface and a nominal wall thickness of 3 mm. When part thickness is reduced below 2 mm, measured total transmittance may increase slightly while haze changes with gate location, melt temperature, and surface replication. For applications requiring light transmittance above 87%, the mold cavity should be diamond-polished and free of parting-line flash because surface roughness directly scatters incident light and raises haze as measured by ASTM D1003-13.
Thermal exposure is the primary processing boundary. Melt temperature is maintained between 220°C and 250°C, with a narrower production band of 230–245°C for low warpage and consistent optical transmission. Above 250°C, the rate of oxidative yellowing increases, and the color shift becomes visible when total material residence time in the barrel and hot runner exceeds 8 minutes. Below 220°C, melt viscosity rises enough to reduce thin-wall filling and to produce visible flow lines in lenses and flat display covers. On a standard 150-ton hydraulic injection molding machine with a general-purpose screw having a compression ratio of 2.0:1–2.5:1, shot size should be set to 20–80% of barrel capacity so that residence time remains within the acceptable window. If the shot size is below 20% of barrel capacity, the residence time of a portion of the melt can exceed 8 minutes even when the cycle time is short, producing yellowed material at the gate or intermittent streaking in transparent parts.
The hot runner manifold is operated 5–10°C below the nozzle melt temperature to reduce thermal degradation. Nozzle temperature is measured with a needle pyrometer, not by the machine set-point alone, because shear heating in the nozzle tip can add 3–8°C above the barrel set-point. If the mold has multi-cavity unbalanced flow paths, the cavity farthest from the sprue may receive resin that has accumulated a longer thermal history. In that condition, the local melt temperature can still be within the nominal range while the accumulated residence time exceeds the oxidation threshold. The resulting defect is not a short shot but a localized yellow haze at the gate or along the weld line.
Pre-drying parameters for TOYOLAC MABS 982-X02 are constrained by moisture uptake and optical surface quality. A desiccant dryer with a dew point lower than −30°C and an inlet air temperature of 80–90°C is used for 3–5 hours for virgin pellets. The target moisture content before molding is below 0.05 wt%; verification is performed by Karl Fischer titration on dried pellets. If the material is exposed to ambient air at relative humidity above 60% for more than 30 minutes, surface moisture uptake rises and splay, silver streaking, or gate blush appears in transparent parts. Drying at temperatures above 95°C is avoided because pellet agglomeration and additive migration can occur, and the resulting feed instability appears as screw recovery-time variation.
In multi-cavity hot-runner tools, stagnant zones or oversize manifolds can generate localized residence times above 8 minutes even with normal cycle times. The material undergoes thermal-oxidative chain scission in those zones and forms chromophore species that appear as yellow streaks at the gate. This failure mode is not corrected by raising mold temperature or increasing holding pressure; it requires reducing manifold hold time, shortening the flow channel, or lowering the manifold temperature by 5–10°C relative to the nozzle set point. Color changes from natural to tinted MABS must be managed with a styrenic purging compound whose melt viscosity is within 10–20% of the MABS melt viscosity. Polyolefin-based purge compounds are not used because they create incompatible interfaces that undermine transparency and reduce impact strength at the gate region.

The values in the processing table are starting-point conditions for a cold-runner or valve-gated hot-runner tool. Actual parameters depend on part geometry, gate count, and machine capability. Cavity pressure transducers are recommended for transparent thin-wall parts because they separate filling-phase pressure from packing-phase pressure. When cavity pressure at end of fill falls below 35 MPa, polished surface replication declines and the measured haze increases even if the part is visually full. A holding pressure of 40–60 MPa and a holding time of 3–6 s per 2 mm of nominal wall thickness reduce sink marks and internal voids that scatter light.
In thin-wall housings with nominal wall thickness below 1.5 mm, the gate diameter for edge or fan gates is held between 0.8–1.2 mm. The apparent shear rate at the gate should remain below 50,000 s−1 to avoid melt fracture and optical heterogeneities. Vent channels with a depth of 0.01–0.03 mm and a land length of 1.0–2.0 mm are cut on the parting line. Insufficient venting causes burn streaks and brown deposits; excess vent depth causes flash and edge haze. Mold temperature is controlled with a thermolator to 40–70°C. Higher mold temperatures above 70°C improve surface replication and reduce weld-line visibility but increase cycle time and may raise the coefficient of thermal expansion measured after demolding. Lower mold temperatures below 40°C reduce gloss and increase residual stress, which appears as birefringence or stress whitening around inserts and snap-fit bosses.
Injection velocity is ordinarily set between 50–150 mm/s for transparent unfilled MABS. Velocities above 150 mm/s can create jetting and gate blush when the melt enters a cavity without laminar flow development. A valve-gated hot runner with delayed opening reduces premature freezing at the gate and improves gate-area optical quality. If the gate diameter is increased beyond 2.0 mm to lower pressure drop, visible gate blush may appear on the polished surface due to local packing pressure differences.
Replacing general-purpose ABS with TOYOLAC MABS 982-X02 in a transparent medical or cosmetic housing changes optical transmission from below 50% in natural ABS to above 87% at 3 mm, depending on mold polish and part geometry. The difference originates from the refractive index adjustment provided by the methyl methacrylate comonomer. Compared with PMMA, MABS 982-X02 retains a rubber-toughened morphology that raises notched impact strength but lowers surface hardness and increases the risk of stress cracking under ketone or aromatic hydrocarbon exposure. Compared with polycarbonate, MABS 982-X02 has lower Vicat softening temperature, generally 85–105°C versus 145–150°C for general-purpose polycarbonate, and lower notched impact strength, but it can be processed at lower melt temperatures and shows easier color matching in tinted transparent parts.
Mold shrinkage for transparent MABS measured according to ISO 294-4 typically falls between 0.4% and 0.7%. Tools designed for general-purpose ABS can sometimes accept MABS grade substitutions if gate location, vent depth, and cooling layout are modified. However, a direct substitution without mold temperature adjustment often produces higher residual stress, especially near thick sections or metal inserts. Post-molding annealing at 70–80°C for 2–4 hours reduces molded-in stress for parts that will contact alcohols, surfactants, or low-molecular-weight plasticizers. Stress-cracking susceptibility is amplified by external mold-release sprays, which are avoided on optical surfaces because they create a surface film that raises haze by 1–3% as measured by ASTM D1003-13 and interferes with ultrasonic welding or coating adhesion.
Ultrasonic welding of TOYOLAC MABS 982-X02 to itself or ABS uses an energy director included in the part design. Starting-point conditions for 2 mm wall stock are an amplitude of 30–60 µm and a welding force of 100–300 N per linear centimeter. If regrind exceeds 20 wt% or if drying is incomplete, volatiles create voids at the weld line and reduce joint strength. Solvent bonding and coating operations require pre-production stress-cracking evaluation because transparent styrenic copolymers are prone to environmental stress cracking when exposed to ketones, esters, and aromatic hydrocarbons under molded-in stress.
For applications requiring food-contact approval, the article manufacturer must verify that the final formulation and finished product meet the migration limits under Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and any applicable national implementing measure. No universal food-contact certification is assigned to the resin alone. In medical device enclosures, ISO 10993-1:2018 biological risk assessment is performed on the finished device; the resin supplier does not grant material-level biocompatibility clearance. Compliance with RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH SVHC obligations is established through supplier documentation for the purchasing lot, not from generic platform statements.
