    Application of Toray TOYOLAC® MABS 930-355 U

Clear rigid housings for in vitro diagnostic instruments and handheld point-of-care modules are molded from Toray TOYOLAC® MABS 930-355 U when optical transmission per ASTM D1003-21, impact resistance per ASTM D256-23, and compatibility with quaternary ammonium disinfectants per ASTM D543-21 are validated. The compliance framework includes ISO 10993-1:2018 biological evaluation planning, ISO 10993-5:2009 in vitro cytotoxicity, and ISO 10993-10:2021 skin sensitization and irritation, with manufacturing executed under ISO 13485:2016. The formulation is kept as virgin resin with a color masterbatch added at 2.0–3.0 wt%; regrind is limited to 15 wt% only after total light transmittance per ASTM D1003-21 and Izod impact retention per ASTM D256-23 are verified against the original lot. Pre-drying is performed at 80–90 °C for 2–4 h with a dehumidified hopper dryer delivering a dew point below -30 °C, and the moisture content is held below 0.05 wt% prior to melt processing. Processing on a 100–180 t injection molding machine with a 22 mm diameter screw, L/D 20:1–22:1, uses a barrel profile from 210 °C at the feed throat to 240 °C at the nozzle and a mold temperature of 45–60 °C, with hold pressure at 40–60 MPa adjusted to gate geometry to eliminate sink marks at boss-to-wall transitions. Terminal product types include non-fluid-path analyzer windows, reagent cartridge lids, handheld diagnostic meter housings, and transparent protective covers for bench-top analyzers. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; sterilization compatibility with ethylene oxide under ISO 11135:2014 and gamma radiation under ISO 11137-1:2006 must be validated on the finished device, and steam autoclaving above 121 °C is outside the operational boundary.

What Makes Transparent MABS Acceptable for Cosmetic Packaging Under EU 1223/2009?

Cosmetic packaging components produced from Toray TOYOLAC® MABS 930-355 U fall under Regulation (EC) 1223/2009, with Annex I safety assessment handled by the finished packaging supplier, while the resin lot must carry REACH Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 SVHC declarations and comply with Annex XVII restrictions. In this sector, a color masterbatch is introduced at 1.5–3.0 wt%, and a UV absorber is added at 0.2–0.5 wt% only when the component is positioned in direct retail lighting; pearlescent or interference pigments are dosed at 0.5–2.0 wt% and predispersed through a side-feeder on an L/D 40:1 twin-screw extruder at 200–230 °C melt temperature to prevent streak formation. The primary conversion route is multi-cavity injection molding with a mirror-polished mold surface, typically SPI/SPE A-1 to A-3, and a mold temperature of 55–70 °C, where the elevated mold temperature raises gloss measured by ASTM D523-20 but increases cycle time by approximately 8–12% compared with 40 °C mold operation depending on wall thickness. Terminal product types include lipstick caps, compact outer shells, serum bottle over-shells, fragrance cap inserts, and mascara tube bodies. The operational boundary excludes continuous contact with ketone-based nail polish removers; compatibility with ester-rich fragrance oils is evaluated by ISO 175:2010 for mass and dimensional change after 24 h immersion at 23 °C.

In white-goods control panels and floorcare clear dust-bin components, Toray TOYOLAC® MABS 930-355 U is selected as a transparent, impact-modified styrenic copolymer that can be processed with a color concentrate at 2.0–4.0 wt% and, only after optical haze shift per ASTM D1003-21 and mechanical property retention per ISO 179-1:2020 Charpy notched impact and ISO 178:2019 flexural modulus are verified, with regrind up to 20 wt%. Compliance for finished appliances is evaluated under IEC 60335-1:2020 and relevant part 2 standards, with flame rating tested to UL 94 HB at the minimum thickness used in the application. Production on a 250–450 t injection molding machine uses sequential valve-gated hot runners to control weld lines in large transparent panels; the melt temperature is held at 230–245 °C, the mold temperature at 50–70 °C, and the holding pressure is profiled from 60–80 MPa to 30–40 MPa over the gate seal time to minimize birefringence near the gate. Terminal product types include vacuum cleaner dust cup assemblies, washing machine detergent drawer windows, refrigerator door bins, and air purifier water tank covers. The operating boundary is set by heat distortion temperature per ISO 75-2:2020; continuous exposure to water above 65 °C may cause stress relaxation at snap-fit features, so hot-water contact parts require redesign or a higher-heat transparent grade.

Clear Consumer Audio Shells and the Boundary of Thermal Distortion

Transparent earbud charging case shells and ear cup covers are molded from Toray TOYOLAC® MABS 930-355 U where the melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 is confirmed to meet the tool-fill requirement for 0.8–1.5 mm wall sections in multi-cavity tools without flow marks. The compliance profile for finished consumer audio equipment includes IEC 62368-1:2020 safety requirements, UL 94 HB at the minimum wall thickness, and optical transmission measured by ASTM D1003-21. The formulation uses a color masterbatch at 2.0–3.0 wt%; regrind is maintained below 10 wt% for transparent outer surfaces because higher regrind fractions raise haze and reduce batch-to-batch consistency. Pre-drying is performed at 80–90 °C for 2–4 h with a dehumidified hopper dryer delivering a dew point below -30 °C; at plant relative humidity above 60%, drying time is extended by 1 h. The processing window is narrow: barrel temperatures are set from 220 °C at the rear zone to 240 °C at the nozzle, and melt residence time is limited to 6 min at 240 °C to prevent yellowing; on a 120–220 t injection molding machine with a 25 mm diameter screw, the screw speed is held at 60–100 rpm, back pressure at 3–8 bar, and decompression at 3–5 mm to avoid nozzle drool. Mold temperature is maintained at 55–70 °C to achieve a target surface energy above 38 mN/m for subsequent UV hard-coat adhesion, measured by contact angle per DIN 55660-2:2011, while ejection temperature is kept below 75 °C to prevent dimensional drift at snap-fit walls. Terminal product types include earbud charging case shells, headphone ear cup covers, transparent speaker grille rings, and detachable audio module windows. The limitation is thermal distortion: components exposed to continuous service above 65 °C or adjacent to battery charging heat sources require a higher-heat transparent polymer or additional heat shielding; published data for this specific configuration is limited.

When Office Automation Optical Windows Require Dimensional Stability During High-Speed Molding

Office automation components such as printer scanner document covers and copier paper cassette windows impose simultaneous requirements of optical clarity, low warpage, and high-speed mold filling. Toray TOYOLAC® MABS 930-355 U is processed with a color masterbatch at 2.0–4.0 wt%, and where static dissipation is specified on the drawing, a transparent antistatic additive is dosed at 0.5–1.5 wt%, with the resulting haze shift confirmed by ASTM D1003-21. Incoming resin quality is verified by melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C/98.1 N, and the finished parts are checked for surface gloss under ASTM D523-20 and dimensional stability under DIN 16901:1982-11 or customer-specific optical coordinate measurements. The conversion process uses a 200–350 t injection molding machine with a valve-gated hot runner; melt temperature is controlled at 230–245 °C, mold temperature at 50–65 °C, and clamping force per projected area at 0.3–0.5 t/cm², with the lower limit applied to parts with rack-and-pinion bosses to prevent over-packing and warpage. Terminal product types include scanner document covers, printer paper cassette windows, copier control panel lenses, and office machine status-light diffusers. The boundary condition is environmental stress cracking: contact with solvent-based cleaning agents used on office equipment must be evaluated by ISO 22088-3:2008 or ASTM D543-21 before release, and continuous surface temperature should not exceed 65 °C under internal lamp load.

For juvenile transparent items such as toy lenses, rattle bodies, and transparent building-block windows, Toray TOYOLAC® MABS 930-355 U is processed only as a virgin formulation with a color masterbatch added at 2.0–4.0 wt%; recycled content is excluded because traceability under EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 and ASTM F963-23 requires lot-level control of heavy metal migration. The relevant regulatory checklist includes REACH Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 Annex XVII entries for phthalates and cadmium, and U.S. small parts dimensional requirements under 16 CFR 1501 for finished articles intended for children under three years. Production uses an 80–150 t injection molding machine with a 20 mm diameter screw, a melt temperature of 220–240 °C, and a mold temperature of 40–55 °C; the lower mold temperature is selected to reduce cycle time, but gate area gloss loss is compensated by a 0.5–1.0 mm radius side gate and an SPI/SPE A-2 polished cavity. Terminal product types include transparent toy lenses, rattle bodies, building-block windows, and action figure accessory components. The operational boundary is chemical contact: components that may be mouthed are excluded from formulations containing solvent-based decorative coatings, and compatibility with saliva simulant is evaluated by DIN 53160-1:2010 or customer-specific protocols; published data for this specific configuration is limited.

    More Introduction

Toray TOYOLAC® MABS 930-355 U is a methyl methacrylate–acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene copolymer formulated for transparent injection-moulded components. In MABS chemistry, methyl methacrylate units lower the refractive index of the styrenic continuous phase toward that of the dispersed polybutadiene-rich phase; this refractive-index matching reduces internal light scattering and produces a material with total luminous transmittance near 90% at 3 mm thickness under ISO 13468-1 or ASTM D1003, while the butadiene component retains notched impact behaviour above that of amorphous polymethyl methacrylate. The designation 930-355 U combines the 930 series base resin with a suffix that may indicate colour, additive package, or ultraviolet-stabilization status depending on Toray regional nomenclature; the suffix should be confirmed against the supplier’s certificate of analysis because public grade-specific data for 930-355 U is limited. The ranges below derive from the transparent TOYOLAC MABS 930 series and should be replaced with lot-specific nominal values for design calculations.

The ranges above are typical unfilled transparent MABS 930 series values. They are not design minima. For load-bearing or safety-relevant mouldings, the structure should be evaluated using lot-specific minimum values at the specified temperature and strain rate, and final part testing should be conducted on the actual wall thickness and gate design.

What separates TOYOLAC MABS 930-355 U from transparent ABS, PMMA, and polycarbonate?

Relative to general-purpose TOYOLAC ABS, the 930 series provides lower haze and higher visible-light transmittance. Conventional transparent ABS often shows haze values above 3% at 3 mm; MABS 930-355 U is typically in the 0.8–1.5% range. The impact resistance of MABS, however, remains lower than that of high-impact ABS grades used in opaque mouldings because optical clarity requires a controlled rubber-particle size distribution and reduced refractive-index mismatch. Compared with PMMA, MABS 930-355 U trades surface hardness and modulus for higher notched impact strength: PMMA typically exhibits Charpy notched impact below 3 kJ/m² and flexural modulus above 3,000 MPa, while the MABS 930 series is near 6–9 kJ/m² and 2,200–2,400 MPa. PMMA retains superior outdoor weatherability and scratch resistance; MABS is not an equivalent substitute for externally exposed lenses unless the U suffix is confirmed as a UV-stabilized grade and the part passes ISO 4892-2 exposure criteria.

Compared with polycarbonate, MABS has lower heat resistance and toughness. Polycarbonate heat deflection temperature at 1.80 MPa is typically above 120°C, whereas MABS 930-355 U remains near 84–89°C. The practical advantage of MABS is lower melt viscosity and less demanding drying, which can reduce cycle time and injection pressure in thin-wall transparent parts. Polycarbonate remains the preferred choice when autoclavability at 121°C, high-energy impact, or dimensional stability at elevated temperature is specified. Within the Toray TOYOLAC MABS portfolio, the 930 series is positioned as the high-flow transparent injection-moulding grade; lower-flow MABS grades may provide marginally higher impact strength but require higher filling pressure for the same part geometry.

Before melt processing, TOYOLAC MABS 930-355 U is dried in a dehumidifying hopper dryer to a residual moisture content no greater than 0.03 wt%. Drying at 80–85°C for 3–4 h with a supply-air dew point of −30°C or lower is typical; higher moisture levels produce surface splay, silver streaks, and increased haze in transparent sections. Melt-temperature settings for injection moulding are commonly 230–250°C, with rear zone at 190–210°C, middle zone at 220–230°C, front zone at 235–245°C, and nozzle at 240–250°C. A mould temperature of 50–70°C is used for polished transparent surfaces; below 40°C, flow marks, weld-line visibility, and residual stress may increase. The melt should not be held above 260°C for more than 5 min. Hot-runner channels with sharp dead zones are a known source of yellowing and black specks in transparent MABS production; valve-gated systems with streamlined melt channels reduce stagnation. A general-purpose screw with L/D 20:1–24:1 and compression ratio 2.2:1–2.5:1 is usually adequate.

In multi-cavity transparent moulds, intermittent splay defects and batch-to-batch optical variability have been associated with inadequate dryer dew-point control and poor return-air filtration. Closed-loop drying with dew-point alarms, clean return-air filters, and routine desiccant-bed regeneration is recommended. Regrind usage is possible up to 20 wt% provided the regrind is dry and free of contamination; repeated heat history and higher regrind fractions increase haze and lower notched impact strength. Mould venting should be provided at the parting line with vent depth of 0.02–0.03 mm to reduce burn marks and gate blush. For optical mouldings, gate position and venting are not secondary. A side or fan gate with land length of 0.5–1.0 mm and width at least 60% of the part wall thickness is preferred; pin gates create high shear at the gate and can produce a visible gate-haze defect. Cold-slug wells are used upstream of the cavity. With a mould surface finish of SPI A-1 or A-2, the transparent part replicates a high-gloss surface; fine cavity scratches become visible in the part and are not masked by pigments. In thin-wall sections, flow-induced orientation near the gate can produce a local haze pattern; reducing injection velocity and raising mould temperature lowers the orientation gradient and improves optical uniformity.

Hot-runner systems should be externally heated with thermocouples in each nozzle, and the temperature spread among nozzles should be held within ±5°C. In multi-cavity transparent MABS moulding, nozzle-to-nozzle variation larger than 5°C has been associated with cavity-to-cavity haze differences. Clamp force can be estimated from cavity pressure and projected area; for transparent thin-wall MABS components, cavity pressure at gate seal is commonly 30–50 MPa. A machine with clamp force below the calculated value can allow flash and dimensional variation, while an oversized machine may extend residence time and increase thermal degradation risk.

Optical, thermal, and regulatory reference data

Compliance areaApplicable standard or directiveData source or limitation
RoHS 2 restricted substancesDirective 2011/65/EU Annex IIGrade-specific supplier declaration required
REACH SVHC communicationRegulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Article 33Safety data sheet and candidate-list screening
Food-contact suitabilityFDA 21 CFR 177.1020 or EU 10/2011Written supplier certification required; not inherent to raw grade
Medical device biocompatibilityISO 10993-1End-device extraction and biological evaluation required
Accelerated weatheringISO 4892-2UV-stabilized suffix only; design-specific validation required

Compliance statements are grade-specific. The absence of a supplier statement in the lot certificate means that the moulder must perform its own verification under the applicable product directive. Thermal history, colourants, process aids, and regrind can alter the final regulated-substance profile; therefore, a raw-polymer certification does not automatically cover coloured or regrind-containing articles.

Chemical exposure limits are a selection criterion. The 930 series is not recommended for continuous immersion in ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, or chlorinated solvents; these solvent classes plasticise the styrenic matrix and can cause environmental stress cracking under injection-moulded residual stress. Short-term wiped contact with dilute soap solutions, ethanol/water mixtures, or household cleaners may be acceptable, but repeated disinfection of stressed transparent covers should be tested by the moulder. The grade is not designed for autoclave cycles at 121°C or continuous hot-water service above 80°C because the heat deflection temperature under load falls below such conditions and the optical surface may distort. Mounted parts with metal inserts or screw bosses may develop microcrazes if exposed to ester-based mould-release agents or aggressive disinfectants; external lubricants and incompatible colourant carriers can also reduce environmental stress cracking resistance and should not be incorporated without application-specific validation.

When thin-wall transparency and impact resistance must coexist in a single cavity

Toray TOYOLAC MABS 930-355 U is a candidate for transparent housings, diagnostic instrument covers, optical sensor windows, cosmetic and personal-care packaging, and consumer-electronics trim. In thin-wall mouldings below 2.5 mm, the lower melt viscosity of the 930 series reduces filling-pressure demands compared with higher-viscosity MABS grades, making it suitable for high-cavitation tooling. Gate design controls optical quality: a side or fan gate reduces jetting and haze, whereas pin gates can create high shear and local optical defects. For diagnostic housings, the final article may require ISO 10993-1 evaluation; the raw MABS grade alone does not confer medical-device clearance. For housings exposed to hospital-grade disinfectants, repeated wet-wipe protocols with alcohol-based or quaternary ammonium solutions should be conducted under strain to detect stress cracking. Published long-term data for the 930-355 U suffix under gamma irradiation or electron-beam sterilization is limited; if radiation sterilization is specified, a validation study on the finished component is required.

In cosmetic packaging, MABS provides the transparency required for wall thicknesses around 1.0–2.0 mm and the notched impact behaviour needed for snap-fit closures. Contact with ester-containing formulations may require compatibility testing; the polymer should not be used with solvent-based perfumes or nail-polish removers unless validated. Moulded part surfaces can be polished to high gloss, and weld lines can be relocated by gate position to minimise visible optical disturbance. Cold-chain diagnostic housings should be impact-tested at service temperature because notched impact strength decreases as the polybutadiene phase approaches its low-temperature transition; low-temperature qualification under ISO 179-1/1eA or ISO 180/A is required when service temperatures fall below 0°C.
