Injection molding of transparent blender jars and food-processor bowls from Toray TOYOLAC MABS 920 FC is governed by the resin’s narrow pre-drying window and the shear sensitivity of methacrylate-modified butadiene-styrene flow. Production-scale single-screw injection machines with L/D 20:1–22:1, compression ratio 2.0–2.5, and shut-off nozzle are set to a flat barrel-temperature profile from 230 °C to 250 °C; mold temperature is held between 40 °C and 70 °C to preserve light transmission and minimize silver streaking. Dehumidifying drying at 80–90 °C for 3–5 h with a dew point of ≤ −35 °C reduces residual moisture to ≤ 0.05 wt%, because free moisture above this level hydrolyzes the rubber phase at the barrel residence time and produces visible bubbles at the part surface. The food-contact requirement is anchored to FDA 21 CFR 177.1020, EU (EC) No 10/2011 with overall migration below 10 mg/dm² under EN 1186-1, and GB 4806.7-2023, but final article compliance must be verified with the specific color masterbatch and regrind ratio. In formulation practice, the converter typically uses 100 wt% virgin resin for export-market articles, or up to 20 wt% clean in-house sprues and runners re-ground below 4 mm; color masterbatch loading ranges from 0.5 wt% to 1.5 wt% only when the carrier is ABS- or MABS-compatible, and masterbatch base resin must itself meet the same food-contact requirements. The downstream production process employs medium-high injection speed into fan gates or edge gates sized to 70–80% of wall thickness, with hydraulic packing pressure 50–70% of injection pressure for 2–5 s effectively avoiding sink marks around thick base transitions. Terminal article types include transparent blender jars, food-processor bowls, spice-grinder containers, and small clear lid assemblies for kitchen machines, all of which are subject to cyclic top-rack dishwasher exposure and require welded bosses for blade-bearing inserts.
| Jurisdiction | Reference standard | Test method | Limit or condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| European Union | EU (EC) No 10/2011 | EN 1186-1 | Overall migration ≤ 10 mg/dm² |
| United States | 21 CFR 177.1020 | 21 CFR extraction cells | Resin-specific end-test and migration limits |
| China | GB 4806.7-2023 | GB 31604.1 | Specific migration per resin monomer list |
Pressure-bearing transparent reservoirs for water filtration equipment and hot-beverage appliances are molded from MABS 920 FC only after considering the trade-off between burst strength and gate-induced weld lines. When the wall thickness is increased from 3 mm to 8 mm, a sequential valve-gated system with melt delivery to the thickest cross-section is required; direct sprue gating into thin sidewalls generates jetting turbulence, entrapped air, and anisotropic weld lines that can fail at 50–70% of virgin tensile strength when tested under ISO 527-2:2012. For potable-water contact, the quoted resin grade should be confirmed against the national regulatory scheme, typically NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 for water-contact articles in North America, EU (EC) No 10/2011 migration testing using simulated aqueous foods, and FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 for styrenic copolymer food-contact polymers; national certifications must account for finished-part surface-to-volume ratio and any sealant or elastomer used in the assembly. Formulation is restricted to 100 wt% virgin TOYOLAC MABS 920 FC where potable-water certification is required; regrind may be limited to 0 wt% unless the certification dossier explicitly permits post-industrial scrap from closed-loop production, and melt-compatible masterbatch addition is generally held below 1 wt% because inorganic pigments can create localized stress concentrations at pressure boundaries. Processing on a hydraulic clamp injection machine with clamping force calculated at 0.3–0.5 t/cm² projected area, barrel temperatures of 235–245 °C, and mold temperature 50–70 °C provides sufficient flow length for reservoir sidewalls. The mold is vented to 0.02–0.04 mm along the parting line and ejector pins, with a holding pressure of 60–80% of injection pressure for 4–8 s; the resulting products include water filter housings, espresso machine water reservoirs, electric-kettle water level windows, and steam-generator water boxes.
Transparent thick-wall cosmetic packaging made from MABS 920 FC is specified for rigid thread profiles, low internal haze, and resistance to stress whitening when closures are repeatedly torqued. Injection molds for cream jars and outer shells require polished STAVAX or hardened S420-type cavities with diamond-flow finishing and ejector placement outside the visible bottom; cycle time in thick-wall sections from 4 mm to 15 mm is controlled by cooling channels placed at 8–12 mm from the cavity surface. Compliance for cosmetic packaging is usually assessed under EU Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 for the finished article’s suitability with the cosmetic formulation and under 94/62/EC for packaging heavy-metal totals, with migration testing carried out in accordance with EN 1186-1 using the intended cosmetic simulant; where the package is additionally marketed as food-contact-compatible, EU (EC) No 10/2011 and FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 apply. The formulation addition ratio in this sector is normally 100 wt% virgin MABS 920 FC for transparent thick-wall jars; when brand-color tinting is required, solvent-free masterbatch at 0.2–1.0 wt% is added only after laboratory evaluation for visual transmission and torque-retention effect. The downstream production process uses closed-loop process control with melt temperature 230–245 °C, screw back pressure 0.5–1.0 MPa, decompression 2–6 mm, and mold temperature 50–70 °C to reduce flow-line artifacts at the base-to-wall junction. Terminal finished article types include transparent cosmetic cream jars, outer shells for lip balms, snap-fit transparent over-caps, and pump collars where the visual appearance of the product is part of the consumer qualification.
Because the MABS 920 FC grade tolerates intermittent steam and mechanical shock without the weight of glass, manufacturers insert transparent panels into small domestic kitchen equipment where IEC 60335 safety and dimensional stability are required. The industry compliance standard for this non-direct-food-contact application is IEC 60335-1:2020 with associated material tests for glow-wire ignition and comparative tracking index according to IEC 60695-2-11 and IEC 60112:2020; where the panel edges are located adjacent to food-contact zones, the same material can be covered by EU (EC) No 10/2011 for the relevant surface area. Formulation uses 100 wt% virgin material with 0.5–1.0 wt% masterbatch for tinted versions; regrind of ≤15 wt% is permissible only when used in non-visible back plates or internal brackets to avoid visible particle defects. The production process is injection molding in hybrid or hydraulic machines with a mold temperature of 40–60 °C, barrel temperatures of 230–250 °C, and sequential valve gating where lens thickness falls below 2 mm. Terminal product types include transparent control lenses, push-button surrounds, display windows, and drip-tray panels for kettles, coffee machines, and food processors.
Beverage dispenser components manufactured from MABS 920 FC enter production when glass replacement is driven by repeated sanitisation, line-pressure fluctuations, and consumer-visible impact resistance. The governing compliance framework is EU (EC) No 10/2011 for plastics intended for repeated contact with aqueous and low-alcohol beverages, FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 for the styrenic copolymer, and national migration documentation for the French market based on harmonized EU standards; the actual specific migration limits for acrylonitrile, butadiene, and methyl methacrylate monomers are not exceeded only if the conversion parameters do not thermally decompose the resin. In this application the recommended addition is 100 wt% virgin 920 FC for all wet-side transparent components; regrind from the same product is occasionally permitted up to 10 wt% after three consecutive heat histories are validated by melt-flow testing under ISO 1133-1:2022 and color measurement to ASTM D1003-21 haze. The downstream production process is multi-component or single-shot injection molding with outside and inside surface finishing; melt temperature is capped at 245 °C, hot-runner drop temperature is kept below 255 °C, and mold temperature is 45–65 °C to maintain transparency through the snap-fit undercuts. Terminal article types include cold-side beverage dispenser bowls, juice machine reservoirs, carbonated beverage outlet nozzles, and removable drain trays.
Reusable cold-side drinkware and food storage vessels molded from TOYOLAC MABS 920 FC are process-sensitive around weld lines because tumblers and bowls combine thin rims with thicker bases. Mold-filling simulation and short-shot studies on production machines show that seam-line strength in the base-to-sidewall transition depends on melt temperature being maintained at 235–250 °C, mold temperature at 50–70 °C, and injection profile using a fast initial velocity followed by controlled deceleration; a hot tip gate at the center of the base avoids multiple radial weld lines in the sidewall. The compliance set includes FDA 21 CFR 177.1020, EU (EC) No 10/2011, and GB 4806.7-2023, with migration testing per GB 31604.1 for articles sold in China; for dishwasher-dominated use, repeated cycling under EN 12875-1 is required because discoloration after 50 cycles at 65 °C is a common field failure mode. Addition ratio is 100 wt% virgin resin for transparent external layers; if a two-component molding route is used, the inner tinted layer may contain up to 2 wt% masterbatch, but the outer transparent skin remains uncolored at 0 wt% to maintain depth of appearance. The production process is single-cavity or multi-cavity injection molding with negative-draft side cores for drinking lips and closure threads; terminal products include reusable cold-beverage tumblers, salad bowls, cereal bowls, and storage vessels where hot liquid is excluded.

Toray TOYOLAC® MABS 920 FC is a transparent methyl methacrylate-acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer supplied as cylindrical pellets for injection moulding and profile extrusion. The FC designation identifies a food-contact-oriented grade within the Toyolac 900 series; nevertheless, every production lot requires certificate-of-composition verification because food-contact status is conditional on regional migration limits and the particular food simulant categories applied under Regulation (EU) 10/2011 or 21 CFR 177.1520 as applicable. The polymer is distinguished from conventional transparent ABS by partial substitution of styrene with methyl methacrylate, reducing the refractive index mismatch between the grafted butadiene phase and the continuous SAN/MMA matrix. Under ISO 14782, sheet haze is approximately 2.0 % at 3 mm thickness; under ISO 13468-1, total luminous transmittance is approximately 91 %. Melt processing is normally carried out between 230 °C and 260 °C, with mould surface temperatures between 40 °C and 80 °C.
Moisture uptake is the principal processing constraint. At residual moisture above 0.05 % by mass, hydrolytic chain scission occurs in the barrel, producing splay, gate blush, and loss of optical clarity. Desiccant drying with a dew point no higher than −30 °C is required. Drying at 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h is sufficient when ambient relative humidity is below 60 %; above 60 %, drying time is extended to 4 h to 6 h and a closed conveying system or hopper blanket gas is advised. A typical barrel profile is feed 210 °C, compression 230 °C, metering 240 °C, and nozzle 245 °C, with adjustments for screw diameter, screw speed, and shot size. Single-screw reciprocating injection units with L/D ratios between 18:1 and 22:1 and compression ratios of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 provide adequate plastication without excessive shear. Melt residence time should be kept below 10 min at the upper melt setpoint to limit butadiene-phase yellowing. Production-scale moulding cells running hot-tip valve gates report that parabolic silver streaks radiating from the gate are typically caused by air entrapment or residual moisture; a screw decompression setting of 2 mm to 4 mm reduces air entrapment without drooling from the shut-off nozzle. If pellets are exposed to ambient relative humidity above 60 % for more than 2 h after drying, re-drying is required. Overdrying above 85 °C should be avoided because pellet surface tack can lead to bridging in gravimetric dosing units.
The property profile below derives from published technical data sheets for ISO molded specimens and optically polished plaques. Values should not be used as a specification without lot-specific test certificates.

Optical values are thickness-dependent. Transmittance decreases and haze increases in plaques above 4 mm because the scattering path through butadiene rubber domains lengthens. The MVR of 18 cm³/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg classifies MABS 920 FC as a medium-flow MABS grade; it fills thin-walled parts down to 1.5 mm nominal wall with moderate injection pressure, but published data for specific spiral flow lengths in production tools is limited.
Compared with conventional transparent ABS in the Toyolac 900 series, MABS 920 FC lowers haze from typically 3 % to 5 % to 2.0 % at 3 mm without reducing notched impact strength to PMMA levels. Conventional transparent ABS often reports haze in the 3 %–5 % range at 3 mm; MABS 920 FC is specified near 2.0 %. PMMA grades may report Rockwell M hardness values of 90–100 under ASTM D785, while MABS 920 FC remains a softer copolymer and is more prone to scratching. PMMA also retains higher stiffness, with flexural moduli of 3000 MPa to 3300 MPa under ISO 178, but PMMA Charpy notched impact strength is usually below 2 kJ/m². MABS 920 FC, at 8 kJ/m², is therefore selected for transparent snap-fit lids, hinged closures, and clips that require resilience. Relative to general-purpose polycarbonate, MABS 920 FC has lower Vicat softening temperature and lower resistance to polar solvent stress cracking, but higher melt volume-flow rate at similar moulding temperatures reduces filling pressure and cycle time in multicavity hot-runner tools. Unlike standard transparent ABS, MABS 920 FC is formulated for lower yellowness, although the datasheet may not report a yellowness index under ASTM D1925; PMMA provides higher UV stability and higher surface gloss, while MABS 920 FC provides higher impact strength and lower melt viscosity.
Transparent appliance housings and food-processor bowls require mould temperature uniformity within ±5 °C across the cavity to prevent flow-induced haze. Centre-gated parts can show radial haze because of orientation of the butadiene rubber phase; this is reduced by lower injection velocity and a post-fill holding pressure of 40 MPa to 60 MPa. Wall-thickness transitions should not exceed 25 % to avoid sink marks on textured surfaces. Hot runner systems with direct valve gates are preferred for multicavity production because cold sprue gating increases regrind ratio and can introduce unmelted particles. Regrind levels up to 20 % by mass are typical without measurable optical change when the regrind is dried and free of contamination; higher regrind ratios may shift melt viscosity and reduce light transmittance through accumulated thermal history. For joining, MABS 920 FC can be ultrasonically welded or hot-plate welded; solvent bonding agents that dissolve the matrix may cause stress cracking at weld lines or at knit lines, so bonding agents should be screened on part-scale prototypes.
Food-contact status in the EU is assessed under Regulation (EU) 10/2011 using migration simulants DS1, DS2, DS3, or DS4 depending on the food type. In the U.S., a food-contact notification or exemption may be required beyond 21 CFR 177.1520 because the methacrylate comonomer differs from the styrene-butadiene monomer provisions in that section. The processor must maintain lot-level resin certificates, thermal history logs, and first-article migration test reports. Exceeding a melt temperature of 260 °C or a residence time of 10 min may generate degradation species that invalidate the supplier’s compliance certification. Published data for this specific configuration is limited when the final article involves fatty food simulants or alcohol-containing foods; direct supplier confirmation is required.
| Checkpoint | Reference standard or regulation | Verification basis |
|---|---|---|
| Food-contact status in the EU | Regulation (EU) 10/2011 | Migration limits for DS1–DS4 simulants; supplier certificate |
| Food-contact status in the U.S. | 21 CFR 177.1520 as applicable; a food-contact notification or exemption may be required for the methacrylate comonomer | FDA notification or exemption at the final article stage |
| Restriction of hazardous substances in electrical/electronic housings | Directive 2011/65/EU | Supplier declaration for Pb, Cd, Hg, Cr(VI), PBB, and PBDE |
| REACH SVHC control | Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 | Article 33 communication; supplier declaration |
Outdoor UV exposure is an operational boundary. MABS 920 FC is not a weatherable grade; prolonged solar exposure causes photo-oxidative yellowing and surface microcracking unless a UV-clearcoat or hindered amine stabilizer package is added in a secondary step. Accelerated weathering under ISO 4892-2 may show gloss loss and visible transmittance reduction before 500 h depending on light source and cycle; published data for this specific FC configuration is limited.
Ethylene oxide sterilization is compatible with MABS 920 FC provided aeration after exposure reduces residual ethylene oxide and ethylene chlorohydrin below device-specific limits. Autoclave steam sterilization is not applicable because the Vicat B50 of 102 °C is below the 121 °C standard cycle, causing dimensional distortion under load. Alcohol-based disinfectants, including 70 vol% isopropanol, may induce environmental stress cracking at threaded inserts or snap-fit undercuts when applied to stressed sections. Design stress must be limited to a fraction of the yield stress determined by tensile creep-rupture testing under the intended chemical agent; published data for this specific configuration is limited, so prototype validation is required. For repeated solvent exposure, polycarbonate, polyphenylsulfone, or clarified polypropylene alternatives are generally substituted in clinical hardware.
