Application of Toray Plastics (Malaysia) TOYOLAC™ ASA TA30 X01

In automotive exterior trim programs where painted ABS has been rejected because of film delamination and UV-induced gloss loss, TOYOLAC™ ASA TA30 X01 is processed as a single-point direct-gated melt into mirror shell tools, cowl-vent grilles, and lower A-pillar covers. The principal compliance anchor for unpainted exterior components is accelerated weathering under ISO 4892-2:2013 xenon-arc exposure with daylight filters, supplemented by SAE J2527:2017 for OEM exterior trim approval. Mechanical acceptance uses notched Charpy impact evaluated according to ISO 179-1/1eA at 23 °C and -30 °C, while weld-line strength is checked on dual-gated test plaques with a gate spacing of 80 mm because direct-gated cowl-vent grilles exhibit opposing flow fronts at the bridge ribs. The addition ratio in production is 100 wt% TA30 X01 as received; color concentrate let-down is held between 2.0 wt% and 3.0 wt%, and regrind from post-industrial runners is limited to 15 wt% to prevent an increase in melt viscosity that changes the short-shot pressure envelope in ribbed sections. Drying prior to molding uses a closed-loop desiccant dryer with a dew point below -30 °C, a bed temperature of 80 °C, and a residence time of 4 h, targeting residual moisture below 0.05 wt%. The molding line is a reciprocating-screw injection machine with a screw L/D of 20:1 to 24:1, a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1, and a non-return valve with a ring clearance not exceeding 0.08 mm. Melt temperature at the nozzle is maintained at 240–260 °C, and tool temperature is controlled to 60–80 °C using pressurized water units; draft angles on grained surfaces are held above 1.5° to limit ejection shear whitening at the mirror-housing retaining clips. Terminal part geometries produced from this process include exterior mirror housings without paint, cowl-vent grilles, hinge covers, wiper-arm caps, and lower A-pillar covers. A field-observed failure mode is premature gate blush when first-stage injection velocity exceeds 90 mm/s on direct-gated mirror tools; reducing first-stage velocity to 45–65 mm/s and switching to holding pressure at 95–98% of the cushion position eliminates the blush without increasing cycle time beyond 55 s for a 450 g shot.

How Does TA30 X01 Withstand Water Spray and Xenon-Arc Weathering in Security Camera Enclosures?

Outdoor security camera dome bases and telematics antenna covers are engineered around a combination of UV resistance, dimensional stability, and low-temperature impact after weathering. The relevant compliance baseline is UL 746C F1 for ultraviolet water exposure and immersion; however, because F1 ratings are grade-specific and colorant-dependent, the final molded compound using TOYOLAC™ ASA TA30 X01 must be verified for the specific housing color and wall thickness. When F1 is not available for the specific colored compound, qualification defaults to UL 94 HB flammability with a minimum wall thickness of 1.5 mm and IEC 60529 IP65 or IP66 sealing at the foam gasket groove, with compression set tested according to ISO 1856:2018 after 72 h at 70 °C. Formulation addition is 100 wt% resin; UV stabilizer masterbatch addition above 1.0 wt% is not recommended because it reduces notched Charpy impact at -20 °C below 8 kJ/m² in dark-gray compounds. A mold temperature of 50–70 °C is used to produce a low-gloss surface on the dome ring, with melt temperature set to 240–250 °C and a screw back pressure of 4–6 MPa. Thin-wall flow length is evaluated with a spiral-flow tool at 240 °C, where a spiral length of at least 450 mm at 2 mm wall thickness indicates adequate fill for box-like enclosures with snap-fit fingers. The process uses a hydromechanical clamping unit with clamp force calculated at 40–60 MPa projected injection pressure; tools are fitted with conformal cooling around the lens-mount ring to maintain the inside diameter within ±0.05 mm after ejection. Terminal part types include bullet-camera body shells, junction-box lids, PTZ camera covers, and antenna radome bases. A documented field failure occurs when the dark-gray compound is processed above 260 °C, causing silver streaks at the hinge boss; the corrective action is to reduce nozzle temperature to 245 °C and slow the injection speed to 35 mm/s for the first 50% of the fill stroke.

Used as an unplasticized surface layer over a rigid PVC substrate, TOYOLAC™ ASA TA30 X01 supplies gloss retention and color stability without coextruded PMMA’s lower impact resistance in window-profile capstock coextrusion. The relevant European compliance anchor is EN 12608-1:2016+A1:2020 for PVC profiles, with additional weathering qualification under RAL-GZ 716/1 Part 2 for finished coloured profiles. The capstock thickness in commercial production is held between 0.15 mm and 0.30 mm for window lineals exposed to south-facing facades; thicker layers up to 0.50 mm are used only for deep-grain siding profiles. Formulation addition is 100 wt% TA30 X01 in the capstock layer. Regrind from capstock edge trim is limited to 10 wt% in the PVC substrate only, because introducing dried ASA granules into the PVC extruder creates viscosity stratification. The capstock line uses a parallel twin-screw main extruder with L/D 26:1 and counter-rotation for PVC, and a single-screw satellite extruder with L/D 24:1 for ASA. The PVC core melt enters the coextrusion block at 180–195 °C, while the ASA cap melt is maintained at 210–230 °C; this 20–35 °C differential keeps interfacial melt viscosity sufficiently close to avoid encapsulation defects at the die lip. A gear melt pump after the coextrusion block is set to 4.0–6.0 MPa inlet pressure. Calibration is performed in a dry vacuum sizing tank with -0.03 MPa to -0.06 MPa vacuum; haul-off speed is matched to screw speed to keep wall thickness variation within ±0.05 mm. The terminal profile types include window main frames, sash profiles, glazing beads, door leaf profiles, fence profiles, and cladding planks. The principal process conflict is HCl evolution from the PVC core at die temperatures above 200 °C; if the ASA capstock melt exceeds 230 °C, the interface can develop laminar streaks due to local viscosity inversion. Therefore, thermocouple residence time in the satellite extruder is limited to 3 min and screw speed is limited to 25–40 rpm on a 45 mm screw. Batch-to-batch MFR variation is monitored under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C/10 kg; a deviation beyond ±8% from the reference lot shifts the capstock distribution across the profile width and must be corrected by adjusting satellite extruder speed 2–3 rpm.

When Thermoformed ASA Sheet Replaces Gel-Coated GRP in Marine Locker Lids and RV Fender Skirts

Marine locker lids and recreational vehicle fender skirts are produced from TA30 X01 sheet stock when manufacturers require thermoformable parts with better low-temperature crack resistance than gel-coated GRP and improved UV retention over ABS. Compliance is anchored to ASTM D4329:2021 cycle A UV aging, with notched Charpy impact under ISO 179-1/1eA at -20 °C held above 8 kJ/m² to avoid crack initiation at snap-fit holes; salt-spray resistance under ISO 9227:2017 for this specific grade is limited and must be generated for ocean-facing installations. The formulation addition for sheet extrusion is 100 wt% resin, with post-industrial same-grade regrind limited to 20 wt% to preserve low-temperature impact. The sheet line uses a single-screw extruder with L/D 30:1 to 32:1, a barrier screw with pineapple mixing tip, and a three-roll polishing stack. Melt temperature at the die is 220–240 °C; the die gap is set to 1.15–1.20 times target sheet thickness. Calendering roll temperatures are 70–85 °C top roll, 60–75 °C middle roll, and 50–65 °C bottom roll. Thermoforming uses twin-sided IR heating to a sheet surface temperature of 170–185 °C, with plug speed 250 mm/s and tool temperature 60 °C. Terminal parts include deck hatch lids, glovebox lids, RV fender skirts, battery box covers, and console side panels. The main batch-to-batch variance observed on commercial lines is sheet gauge deviation at the die bolt positions when regrind level exceeds 20 wt%; this is corrected by installing an automatic die-bolt adjustment based on a downstream beta gauge.

Outdoor Power Equipment Cowlings and Sequential Valve-Gated Injection Molding

On outdoor power equipment assembly lines, cowlings molded from TOYOLAC™ ASA TA30 X01 are used where painted ABS hoods fail by chalking and where PP lacks the surface hardness for snap-fit louvres. The compliance stress is outdoor weathering under SAE J2527:2017, with low-temperature impact checked at -30 °C by ISO 179-1/1eA because portable generators and snow thrower chutes are serviced in cold climates. The addition ratio is 100 wt% resin with 1.5–3.0 wt% color masterbatch; post-industrial regrind is capped at 15 wt% and is not used in the outermost cosmetic layer when two-shot or sandwich molding is employed. Drying to 0.05 wt% moisture is mandatory; a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 4 h is used, with return air dew point held below -30 °C. The molding cell uses an injection machine with clamp force from 8,000 kN to 20,000 kN and a hot-runner manifold with sequential valve gates arranged along the part length; gate opening is sequenced with a delay of 0.3–0.6 s between adjacent nozzles to shift weld lines into low-stress ribs rather than the visible hood surface. Melt temperature is 230–250 °C, mold temperature 40–60 °C, and first-stage injection pressure is 70–90 MPa. Venting is cut to 0.02–0.03 mm depth on the parting line; vent depth above 0.04 mm is not used because it produces flash on grained surfaces. Terminal part types include ride-on mower hood and side panels, portable generator top covers, snow thrower discharge chutes, pressure washer shrouds, and wheel covers. The main field failure is knit-line cracking at the hood hinge when the sequential valve gate timing is advanced more than 0.6 s and the melt front cools below 220 °C before merging; lowering injection speed by 10–15 mm/s and raising melt temperature to 250 °C improves knit-line elongation at break by approximately 10% without violating the upper temperature limit.
