In automotive cowl vent grille production, TOYOLAC™ ASA TA10 X01 from Toray Plastics (Malaysia) is introduced to the injection molding cell only after desiccant drying at 80 °C for 3–4 h to reach a residual moisture level below 0.05 wt%. The barrel profile is set with the rear zone at 200 °C, the middle zones at 220 °C to 240 °C, and the nozzle at 245 °C; mold temperature is maintained between 50 °C and 70 °C. On a 2,500 kN hydraulic clamp injection molding machine, large grille surfaces require sequential valve gating to push weld lines away from mounting bosses and hinge points. Weld-line strength is checked against the weld-free tensile strength according to ISO 527-2:2012; if the welded specimen retains less than 80% of the reference value, mold temperature or injection velocity is adjusted before production continues. Hot runner tips with a diameter below 1.5 mm cause excessive shear heating and should not be used in long-run tools, because the acrylate rubber phase becomes locally degraded and visible as silver streaks near the gate. After molding, parts are annealed at 80 °C for 1 h to relieve residual stress before painting or film lamination. End products include cowl vent grilles, mirror housings, and antenna shrouds where color stability and low-temperature impact are specified to OEM standards.
Weatherability is verified under ISO 4892-2 cycle 1 with xenon arc irradiation at 0.51 W/m² at 340 nm, black-standard temperature 65 °C, and intermittent water spray. Gloss retention is measured at 60° geometry and color shift is reported as ΔE. Unfilled ASA parts for exterior trim typically show lower chalking than ABS after 1,200 h, but the exact gloss retention for TA10 X01 should be requested from the supplier because pigment grade and surface texture interact with the weathering stabilizer package. The grade is not a substitute for glass-filled PC/ASA in structural body panels; when flexural modulus above 2,400 MPa is required, the design should move to a filled grade rather than increasing wall thickness alone.
Because a weatherable cap layer must dominate interfacial mechanics before UV exposure, three-layer coextrusion lines for PVC window and door profiles use TOYOLAC™ ASA TA10 X01 as the outer layer over a rigid PVC substrate. The cap layer thickness is set between 80 μm and 200 μm with positive-displacement gear pumps on the cap extruder; the substrate extruder typically supplies a 2.5–3.0 mm profile wall. If the cap layer falls below 60 μm, ultraviolet screening becomes highly dependent on the dispersion of titanium dioxide. Titanium dioxide agglomerates above 0.5 μm create pigment-poor zones where the underlying PVC can undergo dehydrochlorination and surface chalking after 1,000 h of xenon arc testing. The feedblock temperature is kept at 220–230 °C to avoid thermal degradation at the ASA/PVC interface.
| Cap layer thickness | UV screening mechanism | Production implication |
|---|---|---|
| <60 μm | TiO₂-scatter dependent; polymer diffusion path short | High delamination risk; requires dispersion below 0.5 μm |
| 80–150 μm | Polymer plus pigment absorption | Typical production window; layer thickness monitored every 2 h |
| 150–200 μm | Polymer absorption dominant | Warpage and die swell mismatch risk at profile edges |
Adhesion between ASA and rigid PVC is not intrinsic. A coextruded acrylic tie layer of 20–50 μm is required between the capstock and substrate; without it, peel strength drops below acceptable values after thermal cycling. Capillary rheometry at 190 °C and 220 °C is used to match the viscosity of the TA10 X01 cap layer to the PVC substrate. When the apparent viscosity ratio exceeds 3:1 at the die lip, interfacial waviness appears and must be corrected by raising the PVC barrel temperature by 3–5 °C before changing screw speed. Extruded profiles are tested for dimensional stability to EN 12608-1:2016, for weathering to ISO 4892-2, and for low-temperature impact to ISO 179-1 at −20 °C. Delamination after weathering is examined by cutting a 100 mm section and applying a 90° peel force; any continuous separation between cap and substrate is a rejection criterion.
For outdoor telecom enclosures and solar junction boxes, TOYOLAC™ ASA TA10 X01 is selected only when retention of impact after humidity cycling is more important than tensile stiffness. The typical wall thickness is 2.0–3.0 mm, and the parts include molded-in bosses for PCB standoffs and cable glands. The resin is dried below 0.05 wt% moisture and processed at a melt temperature of 235–245 °C in a two-cavity hot-runner mold. Pneumatic valve gates are preferred over open hot tips because large orifices leave visible blush on the top surface; the valve pin closes against the gate land to minimize stringing. Charpy notched impact strength is tested per ISO 179-1/1eA at 23 °C and −30 °C. Production lots with notched impact below 12 kJ/m² at 23 °C are not suitable for enclosures with snap-fit covers, because crack propagation follows knit lines around cable entry bosses under assembly stress.
Outdoor suitability is documented by a UL 746C F1 rating on the yellow card; the exact rating for TA10 X01 at the molded thickness must be checked before final UL certification. Unfilled ASA grades generally carry UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm; when a V-0 requirement at 1.5 mm is specified, a flame-retarded grade or a metal backplate is required. Dimensional stability after heat aging is measured according to IEC 62208 for empty enclosures, with a maximum dimensional change of 0.5% across the service temperature range. Ketone-based cleaning agents and aromatic hydrocarbons must be avoided during assembly; isopropanol swabbing is acceptable for removing solder flux from the housing surface.
| Standard designation | Test condition | Acceptance criterion for TA10 X01 application |
|---|---|---|
| UL 746C | Outdoor exposure, UV plus water | F1 rating verified on UL Yellow Card at molded thickness |
| IEC 62208 | Empty enclosure temperature rise and moisture | Dimensional change ≤ 0.5% |
| ISO 179-1/1eA | Notched Charpy at 23 °C | ≥ 12 kJ/m² |
| ISO 4892-2 | Xenon arc, 1,000 h | ΔE ≤ 3.0 |
During marine deck hatch frame production, a 3,500 kN injection molding machine is used with a heated mold at 60 °C and a fill time of 1.5–2.5 s to avoid visible knit lines around hinge inserts. TOYOLAC™ ASA TA10 X01 is chosen for its acrylic ester rubber phase, which retains impact strength after repeated UV and salt fog cycling. Cut edges introduced by drilling or milling expose styrene-rich material that is less resistant to salt spray than the molded skin; edges are rounded and the parts are thermally annealed at 80 °C for 1 h to reduce microcrack growth. After 500 h of neutral salt spray testing according to ISO 9227, followed by 1,000 h of xenon arc exposure according to ISO 4892-2, the acceptance criterion is no visible cracking and gloss retention above 80%. RV air-conditioner shrouds made from TA10 X01 are normally produced by thermoforming of extruded sheet rather than blow molding, because the melt strength of this grade is lower than high-molecular-weight ASA grades.
Chemical exposure in marine service includes diesel fuel, mineral oil, and alkaline deck cleaners. The material withstands alkaline cleaners better than polycarbonate, but prolonged contact with methanol, toluene, or solvent-based antifouling agents produces stress crazing, especially around molded-in metal inserts. For RV AC shrouds, a sheet thickness of 3.0–3.5 mm is extruded on a 90 mm single-screw extruder with a barrier screw and a die gap of 0.6–0.8 mm. The sheet is then thermoformed at a surface temperature of 170–185 °C; thinning at sharp corners must not fall below 60% of the original sheet thickness. Published data for salt-spray plus UV cycling of this exact grade is limited; long-term qualification should include a trial part exposed at the actual marine site.
Although extruded TOYOLAC™ ASA TA10 X01 sheet for spa cabinets and outdoor furniture shells can tolerate short excursions above 240 °C, the production melt temperature is held between 220 °C and 240 °C. Shear heating in a 30:1 L/D single-screw extruder raises the melt temperature by 5–10 °C at screw speeds above 80 rpm, so barrel settings must not be used as the only process limit. When the melt exceeds 260 °C, thermal oxidation of the acrylate rubber phase increases the b* yellow-blue coordinate under D65/10° illumination. The b* shift often exceeds 2.5 before tensile strength drops, making color stability the more sensitive early warning signal than mechanical property loss. The extruded sheet is calendered between polished rolls at 80–100 °C; roll gap is adjusted so that sheet thickness variation does not exceed ±0.05 mm across a 1,500 mm width.
Thermoforming of the sheet is performed at a surface temperature between 150 °C and 180 °C. Below 150 °C, the sheet shows elastic recovery and poor corner definition; above 180 °C, free-surface sag leads to unacceptable wall thinning in female molds. Mold shrinkage is anisotropic, with flat panels showing 0.4–0.6% in the flow direction and 0.3–0.5% transverse when measured according to ISO 294-4. End products include spa cabinet side panels, outdoor furniture armrests, and step treads that are specified for at least 5 years of UV exposure under ISO 4892-2 conditions. The resin is not suitable for thermoformed parts requiring deep draw ratios above 1:1.5 because the sheet thins below 60% of original thickness and the part becomes vulnerable to corner impact fracture.
Field-installed agricultural irrigation controller housings and small GPS equipment enclosures are molded from TOYOLAC™ ASA TA10 X01 when sunlight exposure and occasional contact with fertilizer salts define the part envelope. The primary processing difficulty is the large flat panel area with multiple holes for conduit fittings. Knit lines around these holes are pushed into non-visible ribs by moving the gate to the periphery of the cavity and by using a short injection time of 0.8–1.2 s. The resin is dried at 80 °C for 3 h; melt temperature is set at 230 °C. Chemical resistance is tested according to ISO 175. The material withstands aqueous fertilizer salt solutions at 25 °C for 72 h without significant loss of tensile strength, but solvent-based pesticide formulations containing xylene cause stress cracking if the housing is under assembly stress from mounting screws.
Impact requirements for agricultural enclosures are lower than for automotive. A Charpy notched impact strength of 10 kJ/m² at 23 °C is typically sufficient. UV-exposed parts are tested under ASTM D4329 UV-A exposure for 1,000 h; a ΔE below 3.0 is acceptable for non-appearance housings. If published lot data for TA10 X01 is limited, a trial batch should be exposed in the target installation orientation before production release.
