Application of Toray Industries TOYOLAC™ ASA TA20 X01

Prior to moulding of unpainted exterior trim from TOYOLAC™ ASA TA20 X01, the granulate is dried in a desiccant hopper dryer to a residual moisture level below 0.05 wt-%. The dryer set point is typically 80–85 °C for 3–4 h. A dew point of −40 °C or lower is maintained. Melt temperature is held between 240 °C and 260 °C. Tool surface temperature is controlled between 60 °C and 80 °C. A reciprocating screw with 20:1 to 24:1 L/D and compression ratio 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 is used. Sequential valve-gate hot runners are preferred for large cowl vent grilles. Injection speed is staged: medium velocity through the gate, then reduced fill speed to avoid jetting and gas traps at rib intersections. Hold pressure of 50–70 MPa is applied until gate freeze. Clean runner regrind is incorporated at 10–20 wt-% for hidden mounting ribs. For Class A visible surfaces, the virgin-to-regrind ratio is maintained at 9:1. Colour change after weathering is evaluated by SAE J2527 xenon arc exposure at 3000 kJ/m². A ΔE target of ≤ 3.0 is commonly used for unpainted exterior trim, but OEM-specific approvals must be confirmed. Gloss retention is assessed under ISO 2813. The grade is moulded into cowl vent grilles, mirror housings, tailgate trim, roof rail covers, and antenna housings. Residence time above 260 °C is kept below 8 min to avoid yellowing. Purging with acrylic-based compound is used after shutdown if melt has been held in the barrel. Moisture exposure above 60% RH for more than 2 h requires re-drying.

Outdoor Electrical Enclosures, PV Junction Housings and Utility Meter Covers

TOYOLAC™ ASA TA20 X01 is injection moulded into outdoor disconnect switch housings, photovoltaic combiner boxes, and smart-meter covers. The controlling flammability requirement is the grade-specific UL 94 yellow card. Many outdoor enclosures require UL 746C f1 outdoor-UV performance. Those ratings must be confirmed at the final wall thickness. Long-term UV weathering is verified by ISO 4892-2 or ASTM G155 xenon arc exposure. The acrylic ester rubber phase is more resistant to UV-induced chain scission than butadiene rubber, which is the basis for selection. Final gloss retention values must be confirmed per ISO 2813. The material is not inherently conductive. Surface resistivity is a part design issue. For wall thicknesses above 3.5 mm, packing pressure is held until gate freeze to prevent sink marks at bosses and snap-fit features. Mould temperature is maintained at 65–80 °C. Melt temperature is set to 240–250 °C for light grey grades to reduce yellowing. Regrind is limited to 15 wt-% because dust contamination can reduce tracking resistance. Black enclosures use carbon black masterbatch at 1.5–2.0 wt-% in ASA or SAN carrier. Halogenated flame retardants are avoided in unpainted outdoor housings because of UV colour shift. The final parts are used for solar combiner enclosures, DC disconnect housings, three-phase meter covers, and antenna mounting boxes. Ingress protection such as IEC 60529 IP65 depends on joint design and gasket compression, not solely on resin selection. The material must not be exposed to strong alkalis or concentrated acids beyond short-term splash contact. Stress cracking under constant mechanical load is evaluated using ISO 22088-3 with the relevant service chemical.

For building components installed above 800 m elevation, unpainted ASA is selected over ABS because of reduced ultraviolet embrittlement of the saturated acrylic ester modifier. TOYOLAC™ ASA TA20 X01 is injection moulded into skylight mounting bases, roof ventilation louvres, window balance blocks, and façade sensor mounting flanges. In thin-wall louvres with wall stock 1.8–2.2 mm, melt temperature is held in the lower half of the processing window at 235–245 °C. Higher melt temperature reduces viscosity but increases the risk of flash in multi-cavity tools with more than 16 cavities. Tool temperature is set to 55–70 °C. Injection velocity is adjusted to 80–120 mm/s to maintain flow front continuity. Black components use carbon black masterbatch at 2.0–2.5 wt-% in an ASA or SAN carrier. The carrier type matters: polyethylene-based masterbatch reduces Charpy impact by creating immiscible domains. White and sandstone parts should avoid optical brighteners based on stilbene chemistry. These can yellow under titanium dioxide photocatalysis. Weathering acceptance is typically tested by ISO 4892-2 at 2000 h with ΔE ≤ 3.0. Flame performance under EN 13501-1 must be evaluated on the final assembled component. The material is not intended for structural building elements. It is used in non-load-bearing exterior components where dimensional stability and UV resistance are required. Regrind from cold runners is limited to 20 wt-% for non-visible structural bosses. The parts are assembled with stainless steel or coated fasteners to avoid galvanic corrosion at contact points.

What Limits Continuous Outdoor Service in Agricultural Sensor and Irrigation Housings?

Ultraviolet radiation, aqueous fertilizer salt solutions, and wet-dry cycling are the main limits. TOYOLAC™ ASA TA20 X01 is used for pivot-irrigation control boxes, soil moisture sensor housings, valve covers, and sprinkler riser bodies. The resin has lower moisture uptake than polyamide 6 or polycarbonate. Equilibrium moisture content at 23 °C and 50% RH per ISO 291 is below 0.35 wt-%. This reduces dimensional shift in snap-fitted sensor caps. Chemical resistance is assessed by ISO 175 immersion in 10 wt-% sodium chloride solution and 5 wt-% acetic acid. Typical results show no surface cracking after 7 d at 23 °C. Grade-specific data must still be verified. Concentrated fertilizers containing aromatic solvents must not be used as cleaning agents. Moulding of thick-wall valve covers with sections up to 4.0 mm requires lower holding stress and longer cooling. Core surface temperature is set to 60–80 °C. Melt temperature is kept at 240–255 °C. Regrind addition can be increased to 25 wt-% for non-load-bearing irrigation covers if the flake is free of soil and mineral contamination. Drying before regrind use is still required. Screw recovery speed is reduced to avoid frictional heating. The parts are assembled with EPDM gaskets. Silicone sealants are preferred over polysulfide sealants at joint interfaces. UV performance is tested per ISO 4892-2 with a minimum of 1500 h exposure. The service life target for agricultural housings is typically 10 years in temperate climates. Published data for this specific grade in desert field trials is limited.

When Chlorinated Vapour and Reflected UV Affect Pool and Spa Equipment

ASA is used in pool heater enclosures, spa blower housings, salt chlorine generator collars, and automation control box lids. The service environment contains low-level chloramines and hypochlorous acid vapour. Stress-cracking resistance is evaluated by ISO 22088-3 bent-strip immersion in 0.5 wt-% sodium hypochlorite solution at 40 °C for 48 h. Any visible crazing or cracking at 0.8% outer fibre strain indicates a formulation or moulded-in stress problem. Moulded-in stress is minimised by holding cavity pressure at 60–70 MPa until gate seal. Melt temperature is controlled at 240–255 °C. Tool temperature is set to 65–80 °C. Ejector pins are placed outside high-gloss visible areas. The part must be able to drain condensation. Inserts are sealed to prevent capillary gaps where chlorinated water can concentrate. UV absorber masterbatch is added at 2.0–4.0 wt-% in ASA carrier. Higher addition can cause plate-out on mould vents. Regrind is avoided for salt-cell collars because chlorine exposure may degrade already stressed polymer chains. For non-load-bearing covers, clean regrind is kept below 10 wt-%. End products include pool salt cell housings, control box lids, blower motor covers, and automatic pool cleaner deck boxes. The material should not be used for fittings continuously immersed in chlorinated water at temperatures above 50 °C. Published data for this specific configuration is limited. Long-term testing in actual service is required.

Moulding of tractor roof contours, combine side shields, and sprayer control housings from TOYOLAC™ ASA TA20 X01 requires a balance between low-temperature impact and ultraviolet resistance. Large-shot parts are produced on injection machines with clamp force from 800 t to 1600 t. Melt distribution is maintained by an externally heated hot runner manifold with balanced flow channels. Melt temperature is set between 240 °C and 255 °C. Tool temperature is controlled at 60–80 °C. For large visible panels with wall stock 2.5–3.0 mm, hydraulic injection speed is reduced to avoid shear heating above 300 s−1. Holding pressure is programmed in two stages: 70 MPa for the first 2 s, then 40 MPa until gate freeze. This profile reduces sink marks around mounting bosses. Clean regrind from sprues and runners is incorporated at 15 wt-% for non-visible areas only. Glass-fibre reinforcement is not used in this grade. If higher modulus is required, a different TOYOLAC grade should be selected. Low-temperature impact is assessed by ISO 180/1A notched Izod impact at −30 °C. UV weathering is checked by SAE J2527 or ISO 4892-2. Painted components require adhesion testing per ISO 2409 cross-cut. Unpainted parts avoid the need for primer. The parts are mounted with slotted holes to accommodate thermal expansion. Approximate coefficient of linear thermal expansion for ASA is 80–100 × 10−6 K−1. If an exact value is required, consult the current Toray technical data sheet. The material is used in tractor roof edges, combine side panels, sprayer fender extensions, and telematics module covers.
