    More Introduction

The Toray Industries transparent ABS grade designated 920 XT10 within the Toyolac series is an amorphous acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer developed for through-thickness optical clarity rather than pigmented opacity. The grade is listed in technical bulletins under the model name Toyolac ABS XT10 and is differentiated from general-purpose opaque Toyolac grades by a controlled SAN matrix refractive index and a reduced rubber-domain scattering cross-section. Representative values published in Toray technical literature include a melt flow rate of 21 g/10 min at 220 °C under 98 N load using ISO 1133-1, a density of 1.07 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1, a tensile yield stress of 42 MPa under ISO 527-1/-2, a flexural modulus of 1,750 MPa under ISO 178, and a notched Izod impact of 14 kJ/m² at 23 °C using ISO 180/A. Deflection temperature under load is reported between 74 °C and 76 °C at 1.82 MPa under ISO 75-1/-2, and Vicat softening temperature is reported near 92 °C under ISO 306. These values are material characterizations, not component-specific performance guarantees; the current Toray datasheet and lot-specific certificates should be consulted before tooling release.

Why Does Optical Clarity Constrain Rubber-Particle Morphology in Toyolac ABS XT10?

In conventional opaque ABS grades, butadiene rubber domains with diameters in the 0.5–2.0 µm range act as strong scattering centers, producing opacity. Toyolac ABS XT10 is structurally different: the rubber particle size is reduced below 150 nm or the SAN matrix refractive index is matched to the rubber phase so that visible light is transmitted rather than scattered. This morphological constraint is the primary source of the reported 88 % total light transmittance and 3 % haze at 2 mm thickness under ASTM D1003. The same constraint limits the rubber volume fraction and rubber-domain energy absorption available for impact modification. As a result, notched Izod impact for XT10 is lower than that of high-impact opaque ABS grades in the Toyolac range, which may reach 20–30 kJ/m² at 23 °C under ISO 180/A depending on the specific grade. Processors should not select Toyolac ABS XT10 as a direct substitute for an opaque high-impact ABS in load-bearing snap-fit designs without re-running mating-force and drop-impact calculations.

Compared with transparent polycarbonate grades, Toyolac ABS XT10 has a lower deflection temperature under load, 74 °C versus 125–130 °C at 1.82 MPa under ISO 75-1/-2, and lower notched Izod impact. Compared with PMMA grades, XT10 has lower flexural modulus, 1,750 MPa versus 3,000–3,300 MPa under ISO 178, and higher elongation at break, which reduces brittle failure in low-strain clip features. These differences define the application boundary: XT10 is used where ABS chemical resistance and processing ease are required with transparent covers, but not where continuous heat exposure above 70 °C or PMMA-level surface hardness and scratch resistance are the primary demands.

Prior to melt processing, Toyolac ABS XT10 must be dried to a residual moisture content below 0.10 %; dehumidified-air drying at 80–85 °C for 3–4 h with a dew point of -25 °C or lower is standard practice. Moisture above 0.15 % in transparent ABS produces splay, silver streaks, and localized haze in molded parts. On a production-scale injection molding machine with a three-zone screw of 20:1 L/D and compression ratio 2.0–2.5:1, the melt temperature is maintained between 220 °C and 250 °C, and the mold temperature between 30 °C and 60 °C. A high-flow transparent grade such as XT10 permits thin-wall filling at lower injection pressures than higher-viscosity opaque ABS, but local pressure drops in gates below 1.0 mm diameter can produce jetting and haze. Hold pressure is typically set at 50–80 MPa, back pressure at 5–10 MPa, and screw speed below 120 rpm. These parameters are processing-window starting points; mold-flow analysis and in-mold pressure transducers are required to establish the actual process for a specific tool geometry.

Gate design for transparent Toyolac ABS XT10 parts uses a land length of 0.5–1.0 mm and a gate diameter between 0.8 mm and 1.2 mm for a nominal wall of 2.5 mm. Edge gates and fan gates are preferred over submarine gates because secondary runner modifications minimize gas traps and localized optical defects. Hot-runner systems are specified with naturally balanced channels and nozzle tip temperatures controlled within ±2 °C to prevent drool and material degradation at the gate. Mold venting depth is set at 0.02–0.03 mm for ABS to avoid flash while allowing gas escape; insufficient venting causes burn marks at the fill end and reduces weld-line transparency. A cavity surface finish of SPI-A-1 or SPI-A-2 is required for optical surfaces because micro-roughness increases diffuse scattering and reduces measured total light transmittance.

Transparent covers for small appliances, office equipment, cosmetic packaging, point-of-sale fixtures, and non-load-bearing instrument panels are typical application areas for Toyolac ABS XT10. In these applications, the 88 % total light transmittance and 3 % haze at 2 mm thickness provide sufficient through-plane visibility without the higher melt-processing temperatures of transparent polycarbonate. For outdoor weatherability, unmodified ABS undergoes photo-oxidative yellowing under prolonged UV exposure; accelerated weathering under ISO 4892-2 is required to estimate color shift for a specific part geometry. UV-cured hard coats with a thickness of 15–30 µm are commonly applied to improve surface hardness and UV resistance, with adhesion checked under ISO 2409 cross-cut testing after 24 h conditioning at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity.

When Barrel Residence Time Exceeds 8 Minutes in Transparent ABS Molding

When barrel residence time exceeds 8 min at melt temperatures above 250 °C, the SAN matrix of Toyolac ABS XT10 undergoes thermo-oxidative yellowing that shifts the CIE b* value and reduces total light transmittance at 2 mm thickness. In multi-cavity hot-runner tools with unbalanced channels or in small-shot molding on oversized barrels, residence time can exceed 10–12 min; the result is a color shift that cannot be corrected by regrind dilution. The measured deflection temperature under load of 74 °C at 1.82 MPa under ISO 75-1/-2 defines the upper service boundary for load-bearing transparent components: continuous exposure above this threshold produces creep and dimensional relaxation, particularly in snap-fit features. The grade is therefore excluded from hot-water-contact, hot-air sterilization, and automotive interior light-transmitting components adjacent to heat sources. The lower heat resistance nevertheless permits lower melt temperatures in injection molding, typically 30–50 °C below those required for transparent polycarbonate; this reduces energy input and thermal degradation risk during processing.

Regrind of clean sprues and runners from Toyolac ABS XT10 can be incorporated at levels up to 20 wt% in transparent parts where the resulting haze increase is acceptable; each additional heat history raises yellowness index and reduces notched Izod impact. Published data for the exact haze increase at a specific regrind content is limited, so mechanical and optical testing is required for production release. Regrind from hot-runner systems with long residence may carry pre-degraded material and should be segregated. In production, regrind is dried to the same moisture specification as virgin compound and is blended in a desiccated hopper with virgin pellets at ambient humidity below 60 % to maintain feed consistency.

Regulatory Documentation and RoHS/REACH Boundary Conditions

Toray publishes compliance declarations for Toyolac ABS XT10 under Directive 2011/65/EU RoHS and Regulation 1907/2006 REACH. The flame rating is typically UL 94 HB at 2.0 mm thickness, which limits use in electrical enclosure applications requiring V-0 or V-2 ratings at equivalent wall thickness. If food-contact compliance is required, the specific grade lot must be evaluated against the relevant national migration standard; no unrestricted food-contact status is stated in standard technical literature for this transparent ABS grade. The material should not be combined with flame-retardant masterbatches or antistatic additive packages without re-testing optical haze under ASTM D1003 and notched Izod impact under ISO 180/A, because polar additive packages can raise haze and lower weld-line strength. Strong acids, ketones, esters, and chlorinated hydrocarbons are chemical incompatibilities; stress-cracking resistance under chemical contact should be evaluated using bent-strip methods referenced in ISO 22088 or equivalent internal standards.

For ultrasonic welding of 2 mm transparent ABS joints, a 20 kHz ultrasonic press with a stepped horn and a welding amplitude of 25–35 µm at 100–200 ms weld time is used on production lines. Joint design uses an energy director or shear joint; amorphous ABS forms a local melt pool that resolidifies without crystalline shrinkage, but weld flash and internal stress reduce optical clarity within 1–2 mm of the weld plane. Laser welding with 980 nm diode lasers requires an absorber additive; otherwise transparent ABS transmits the beam through the top substrate, producing no interfacial melt. For solvent bonding, methyl ethyl ketone or cyclohexanone is applied at room temperature, but assemblies with high molded-in stress must be annealed at 60 °C for 1–2 h to avoid stress cracking. Post-mold annealing is also used to stabilize optical properties and reduce birefringence in parts with heavy wall-thickness transitions; annealing time and temperature must be kept below the heat deflection threshold to prevent dimensional distortion.
