    More Introduction

Toray Industries ABS HI-20 is a high-impact acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin supplied as unpigmented pellets for injection moulding, profile extrusion, and sheet extrusion. The grade designation places it within the manufacturer’s HI series, where the suffix 20 corresponds to a nominal melt mass-flow rate of 20 g/10 min at 220 °C and 10 kg piston load when tested according to ISO 1133-1:2022. Regional Toray technical datasheets may express the same flow parameter as melt volume-flow rate in cm³/10 min; direct comparison therefore requires conversion using melt density. The resin is typically supplied with a density of 1.03–1.06 g/cm³ per ISO 1183-1:2019, and its high-impact classification implies an elevated polybutadiene rubber content relative to general-purpose ABS grades. Published lot-specific certificate-of-analysis values should be used for acceptance, because Toray Industries does not publish a single globally harmonised datasheet for HI-20 in all sales regions.

What Constitutes the HI-20 Grade Within Toray’s ABS Portfolio?

The product is characterised by a biphasic structure in which grafted styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer forms the continuous matrix and discrete polybutadiene rubber particles provide impact absorption. For a high-impact grade with a nominal melt flow rate near 20 g/10 min, the rubber phase typically produces notched Izod impact values in the class envelope of 20–35 kJ/m² at 23 °C per ISO 180/1A and reduced-temperature values in the range of 8–15 kJ/m² at −30 °C. Tensile yield stress generally falls between 38 MPa and 45 MPa per ISO 527-2/1A/50, while flexural modulus is commonly reported between 2000 MPa and 2400 MPa per ISO 178. These values are not Toray-guaranteed HI-20 specifications; they define the property envelope for high-impact ABS grades of similar flow class and should be verified against the specific lot certificate. The heat deflection temperature under 1.80 MPa is typically in the 85–95 °C range per ISO 75-2/A. The Vicat softening temperature, when reported, is commonly 95–105 °C under 50 N load per ISO 306/B50.

Drying, Melt Processing, and Tooling Conditions

Moisture control is the first processing boundary for HI-20. Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resins hydrolyse at melt temperatures when residual moisture exceeds 0.05 wt%, producing surface splay, internal voids, and molecular weight reduction. The resin should be dried in a desiccant-bed dryer at 80–90 °C for 2–4 h to achieve <0.05 wt% moisture before injection moulding. At ambient relative humidity above 60%, drying time should be extended to 4–6 h, and hopper loading should be arranged to prevent re-absorption. Melt temperatures for HI-20 are typically set between 210 °C and 250 °C, with the rear zone 10–20 °C lower than the nozzle. Mould surface temperatures of 40–80 °C balance surface gloss, part dimensions, and cycle time. Injection speed should be moderate to high; excessive shear above 10,000 s⁻¹ can cause rubber-phase coalescence and surface delamination. Screw geometry should use a compression ratio of 2.0:1–2.5:1 and a check-ring non-return valve. Back pressure of 0.5–1.0 MPa and screw speed of 50–100 rpm are typical starting points for 25–40 mm diameter screws. Residence time at melt temperature should not exceed 10 min; longer residence causes yellowing and butadiene-phase degradation. For sheet extrusion, a single-screw extruder with L/D 30:1–36:1 and a barrier screw is used with melt temperatures of 200–240 °C. The melt is commonly filtered through a screen pack of 60/100/60 mesh to remove agglomerated rubber particles. Chill-roll temperatures of 80–100 °C are standard for ABS sheet.

In automotive interior applications, HI-20 is processed into glove-box housings, pillar trim, and instrument-panel subcomponents where low-temperature impact and moderate heat resistance are required. These parts are typically validated against OEM emission and fogging limits such as VDA 270 or SAE J1756, and lot-specific HI-20 evidence should be requested from Toray because published data for this specific configuration is limited. In electrical-enclosure applications, the material is normally rated UL 94 HB at wall thicknesses of 1.5 mm or greater, and glow-wire ignition temperature testing per IEC 60695-2-11 may be required for unattended appliance housings. The grade is also used in appliance fascia and vacuum-cleaner housings, where the combination of 20 g/10 min nominal flow and high-impact classification reduces short shots in ribs and bosses while retaining drop-impact toughness. For food-contact applications, end users must verify compliance with FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 or regional migration limits, because ABS grades differ in residual acrylonitrile and styrene migration behaviour depending on polymerisation and finishing technology.

Where HI-20 Departs from General-Purpose and High-Flow ABS Grades

Toray Industries ABS HI-20 differs from general-purpose grades such as TOYOLAC 100 primarily in the rubber-phase volume and particle-size distribution required to maintain impact strength at the 20 g/10 min flow level. A general-purpose ABS with comparable flow may exhibit notched Izod impact below 15 kJ/m² at 23 °C, whereas HI-20 is positioned to retain class-level impact above 20 kJ/m². Compared with TOYOLAC 500, a higher-impact ABS grade in the same manufacturer portfolio, HI-20 typically provides higher melt flow but lower low-temperature impact and slightly lower tensile yield. Compared with TOYOLAC 300, a high-flow grade, HI-20 may show marginally lower mould fill at equivalent barrel settings but better impact retention in thicker sections. The product is therefore not a direct substitute for either high-flow or maximum-impact grades; material selection should follow the predominant failure mode of the part, namely thin-wall fill versus impact at sub-ambient temperatures. Published side-by-side datasheets from Toray Industries should be used for quantitative comparison, because additive packages, stabiliser levels, and colour concentrates shift final properties by 5–10%.

When the Processing Window Is Violated: Defect Mechanisms and Incompatibilities

If HI-20 is processed without adequate drying, the first observable defect is splay or silver streaking caused by steam evolution at the melt front. In severe cases, the butadiene phase oxidises, producing a brownish-yellow colour shift and a measurable loss in impact strength. The resin should not be blended with polyvinyl chloride, acetal homopolymer, or polyamide resins without purging because thermal decomposition products from these polymers catalyse ABS degradation. Long contact with strong acids, aromatic solvents, ketones, and esters can induce environmental stress cracking in moulded parts; end-use compatibility should be tested according to ISO 22088-2 or an equivalent strain-limited method. Outdoor exposure without ultraviolet stabilisation leads to surface chalking and gloss decay within 6–12 months; UV-stabilised versions or opaque colour concentrates are required for exterior use. At barrel temperatures above 260 °C, acrylonitrile decomposition begins, and volatile emissions increase. At mould temperatures below 40 °C, weld-line strength declines because the melt front cools before rubber-phase coalescence can occur. Hot-runner systems should avoid dead spots and use externally heated manifolds with ±5 °C temperature uniformity to prevent resin stagnation.

REACHRegulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Article 33 SVHC communicationSupplier declaration required; no blanket SVHC-free statement without lot data
Food contact, United StatesFDA 21 CFR 177.1020End-use migration testing is required; resin compliance alone does not guarantee finished-article clearance
FlammabilityUL 94, IEC 60695-2-11Typical HB rating at 1.5 mm; final rating depends on colour and part thickness

Published data for this specific configuration is limited for certain niche applications, including medical-device housings and food-contact articles, because Toray Industries does not provide global regulatory clearance for every sales grade. Processors should request a certificate of analysis and a regulatory compliance statement for the exact production site and lot. Dimensional stability after moulding is influenced by post-mould shrinkage of 0.4–0.7% in the flow direction and 0.3–0.6% transverse to flow, measured after 24 h at 23 °C per ISO 294-4. Annealing at 80 °C for 2 h can reduce internal stress but may increase shrinkage. These process-specific variables are not intrinsic specifications; they are operational boundaries derived from standard ABS processing literature and should be validated on production tooling.
