    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Toray Industries ABS 910-X15 is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer within the Toyolac® ABS resin family. The grade identifier positions it among opaque, general-purpose injection-moulding materials and distinguishes it from transparent, flame-retardant, electroplating, or glass-fibre-reinforced ABS variants. The X15 suffix is a manufacturer-internal designation and does not by itself communicate filler content or flame-retardant package; the supplier’s product-code legend should be consulted. Secondary-source published data specific to 910-X15 is limited; therefore, the manufacturer’s technical data sheet and batch certificate of analysis remain the controlling documents for melt mass-flow rate, tensile yield stress, flexural modulus, notched impact strength, and Vicat softening temperature. In process planning, the resin is handled as a hygroscopic material requiring forced hot-air or dehumidifying drying before melt processing. Applications commonly associated with this class of ABS include appliance housings, consumer-electronics enclosures, automotive interior trim, and thin-wall electrical accessories. The absence of an optical or plating-specific additive package restricts the grade to opaque, non-plated end uses unless additional validation is performed.

Melt Conditioning and Screw Geometry for Reciprocating-Screw Processing

Residual moisture is the first controlled variable. Pre-drying in a dehumidifying dryer with an air dew point of ≤ −30 °C is imposed at 80–90 °C for 3–4 h. When the ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, drying time is extended to 4–6 h to maintain a residual moisture target of ≤ 0.05 wt%. Inadequately dried ABS generates splay, silver streaks, and reduced weld-line strength because surface moisture volatilizes during injection and disrupts the flow front. In production-scale dryers, the desiccant bed must maintain a closed-loop air supply because ABS reaches equilibrium moisture rapidly in humid plants. A hopper residence time of 3–4 h is based on pellet bulk temperature, not air temperature alone; the resin must reach the target pellet core temperature before entering the barrel. Batch-to-batch moisture variability is observed when regrind is added because regrind surface area and fines increase water uptake. The regrind fraction is limited to 20–30% to avoid inconsistent melt viscosity and colour shift. Drying hoppers with insufficient air flow or clogged after-filters produce wet pellets even when the controller displays the correct set point; dew-point sensors should therefore be located at the hopper inlet.

Barrel zone profiles are normally set from 210 °C near the feed throat to 250 °C at the nozzle; the melt temperature measured by an insertion pyrometer is held between 230 °C and 250 °C. Residence time above 250 °C should not exceed 10 min to limit thermal degradation of the polybutadiene phase. Mold temperature is controlled at 40–80 °C. Surface temperatures below 40 °C cause premature freeze-off in thin ribs and bosses, while temperatures above 80 °C increase cycle time and may produce gloss graduation on textured surfaces. Back pressure is applied at 0.5–1.5 MPa; screw rotation is regulated at 50–120 rpm to avoid excessive shear heating. Injection units with L/D 20:1–24:1, compression ratio 2.5:1–3.0:1, and a non-return valve are recommended. The melt should be processed in the pseudoplastic region, where apparent viscosity decreases with increasing shear rate. Hot-runner manifold temperatures are set at 220–250 °C; internal dead spots and abrupt diameter transitions are avoided because prolonged hold at high temperature produces carbonized black specks. Purging with general-purpose ABS or polystyrene is performed before shutdown and before colour changes.

Rheological measurements on ABS melts in the 220–260 °C interval show shear-thinning behaviour. For balanced-flow grades, apparent viscosity commonly falls from approximately 1000 Pa·s at 100 s⁻¹ to below 100 Pa·s at 5000 s⁻¹. Simulation of 910-X15 flow requires Cross-WLF coefficients from the supplier because viscosity curvature determines packing-pressure decay, gate-freeze prediction, and weld-line position. The two-phase morphology of ABS creates shear-induced orientation of polybutadiene particles; in thick sections, insufficient packing may cause centre-line porosity and reduce through-thickness impact retention. Gate-freeze time for a 2.5 mm wall in a cold-runner system is estimated at 1.5–3.0 s; the hold-pressure stage is maintained beyond this interval to compensate volumetric shrinkage. For valve-gated hot runners, sequential opening reduces weld-line length but increases the required melt pressure because the flow length is extended. Process tests at the press should include short-shot analysis; the short-shot series identifies flow-front hesitation, air traps, and unbalanced filling before pressure-limited injection begins. Adjustments are made to gate dimensions rather than melt temperature alone because the viscosity curve of ABS is temperature-sensitive but more shear-sensitive. Gate width and depth are sized to produce shear stress below the critical value for melt fracture, which for ABS is approximately 0.1–0.3 MPa depending on melt temperature.

Which Mechanical Property Trade-offs Define the 910-X15 Grade Relative to Other Toyolac ABS Types?

The 910-X15 grade is best evaluated as a general-purpose ABS in which melt processability and room-temperature impact resistance are balanced. Grade verification utilises standardized specimen preparation and conditioning: ISO 294-1:2017 for injection-moulded specimens, ISO 291:2008 for conditioning at 23 °C and 50% RH, ISO 527-2:2012 for tensile yield stress, ISO 178:2019 for flexural modulus, ISO 179-1:2023 for Charpy notched impact, and ISO 75-2:2013 for deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa load. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; the manufacturer’s certificate of analysis provides the controlling numerical values.

Compared with transparent Toyolac 920, the 910-X15 grade does not use a methyl methacrylate-modified matrix or refractive-index-matched rubber phase to provide translucency. The transparent modification usually lowers notched impact strength and solvent resistance relative to opaque ABS; therefore, substitution into clear covers or light-pipe components requires optical verification according to ISO 13468-1 or an equivalent method. Compared with electroplating ABS, 910-X15 is not formulated with a bimodal butadiene particle-size distribution and controlled surface diene concentration for chromic acid etching. Electroless nickel and copper adhesion on non-plating grades often fails because anchor sites are insufficient; cross-cut adhesion to ISO 2409 or peel testing to ASTM B533 is required before any plating process is approved.

Against flame-retardant ABS or ABS/polycarbonate blends, the base 910-X15 grade should be assumed to carry a UL 94 HB classification unless the supplier’s yellow card states a V rating. Flame-retardant packages based on brominated or phosphorus-based additives are not normally present in general-purpose grades, and press-side let-down of FR additives is not supported. Against high-heat ABS grades, the conventional ABS Vicat softening temperature is typically 90–100 °C under ISO 306/B50; α-methylstyrene-modified or maleimide-modified grades may exceed 110 °C. Grade-specific data for 910-X15 must be confirmed before elevated-temperature load-bearing applications are designed.

Compensating Shrinkage Anisotropy in Multi-Gate Tools

Tool design for ABS 910-X15 uses grade-specific mould shrinkage values. ABS injection-moulding grades are commonly reported with linear shrinkage of 0.4–0.7% parallel to flow and 0.5–0.8% perpendicular to flow; pigment loading, regrind fraction, and packing pressure shift the result, so the cavity-cutting value must be taken from the supplier datasheet. In multi-gate tools, shrinkage anisotropy produces out-of-plane distortion when flow orientation differs between adjacent regions. The last-filled area is vented with a depth of 0.02–0.03 mm to avoid flash and burn marks. Weld lines in ABS typically retain 60–70% of nominal tensile strength; if a weld line falls in a snap-fit or screw boss, the gate is moved, a tab gate is added, or valve-gated sequential filling is applied.

Rib design follows the standard ABS rule: rib thickness is 50–70% of the adjoining wall, and the base radius is 25–50% of wall thickness. Draft angles of 0.5–1.0° are used on textured surfaces. High-gloss polished cavities may require an additional surface texture depth of 0.02–0.04 mm because ABS replication of fine textures is pressure-dependent. For heat-rejecting parts, a cooling-channel layout that maintains a cavity-surface temperature variation of less than 5 °C is specified to prevent warpage from differential solidification. Warpage predictions in process simulation should use anisotropic shrinkage coefficients from the material database. If isotropic shrinkage is used in the model, out-of-plane distortion in flat lids or bezels may be underestimated. For tight-tolerance enclosures, dimensional checks are performed after conditioning at 23 °C and 50% RH for 48 h; measurement before this interval may show transient shrinkage or moisture reabsorption effects. Parts ejected below the Vicat temperature may exhibit post-ejection relaxation; cooling time is set so that the mean part temperature at ejection is below 80 °C to reduce deformation.

When 910-X15 Is Considered for Thin-Wall Electrical Housings

Thin-wall electrical housing design below 1.5 mm wall thickness imposes higher melt-pressure demand and more severe shear conditions. Cavity pressure in a 1.0 mm wall can exceed 50 MPa at the gate, requiring high-injection-speed capability and precise switch-over control. In such applications, the mold surface is maintained at 60–80 °C to delay freeze-off, and the melt temperature is kept near the upper limit of 250 °C to reduce viscosity. Production-scale fast-cycling machines with clamp force calculated at 0.5–0.8 tons/cm² of projected area are used; insufficient clamp force causes flash at the parting line and dimensional error. The processing window is narrow because melt temperature above 260 °C risks thermal degradation, while mold temperature below 60 °C yields short shots in the ribs and snap-fits.

For electrical housings, compliance testing is defined by the end-product standard, not by the raw-material grade alone. Comparative tracking index is evaluated to IEC 60112; glow-wire ignition and flammability are assessed to IEC 60695-2-11 and IEC 60695-11-10. A general-purpose ABS may satisfy HB criteria in wall thicknesses above 1.5 mm; thinner sections require a flame-retardant grade or a redesign with a thicker wall. Thermal cycling resistance is tested under IEC 60068-2-1 and IEC 60068-2-2 conditions appropriate to the appliance class. Residual stress from fast filling is reduced by annealing at 80 °C for 1–2 h when dimensional stability after heat ageing is specified.

Compliance documentation for Toray ABS 910-X15 should be requested as a supplier declaration. The following test designations are relevant to grade release and regulatory review.

Regulatory obligations are site- and application-specific. The grade should not be assumed to satisfy food-contact requirements unless a specific FDA 21 CFR or European Union 10/2011 migration-compliance statement is issued for the exact formulation. If the application is sold in the European Union, REACH SVHC screening and RoHS 2011/65/EU annex II restrictions are verified against the supplier’s declaration. The resin is not recommended for continuous service in contact with ketones, esters, or chlorinated solvents; swelling and environmental stress cracking occur in aggressive media. For outdoor use, unpigmented or general-purpose ABS grades exhibit gloss loss and yellowing under UV exposure; long-term weathering requires a UV-stabilized or painted grade or an acrylic capstock.
