Toray Industries ABS 700V0 is a flame-retardant acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer supplied in pellet form for injection molding and extrusion of components requiring vertical burn classification to UL 94 V-0 at the certified minimum thickness, commonly 1.5 mm. The material is designated under ISO 2580-1 as an ABS molding resin with a flame-retardant additive package. Typical density for this resin class is 1.18 g/cm³ to 1.21 g/cm³ when measured according to ISO 1183-1. Melt mass-flow rate values are reported under 220 °C and 10 kg; lot-specific values vary, and the manufacturer's certificate of analysis controls injection-molding parameter selection.
Common applications include electrical enclosures, battery-management system housings, terminal blocks, relay sockets, and switch components where flame propagation across adjacent molded parts must be suppressed. In multi-cavity tools with wall-thickness transitions, sections below the certified minimum thickness invalidate the UL 94 rating unless the molder validates a separate rating at the actual part thickness. Electrical connectors with 64 or more cavities have shown higher variation in UL 94 performance at weld lines when injection speed is set outside the moderate shear range; cavity-to-cavity fill imbalance can place thin webs into the V-2 or HB boundary even when the bulk material is V-0 rated.
The vertical burn classification is not a bulk material property but a specimen geometry and conditioning result. Under UL 94, five specimens of controlled thickness are conditioned at 23 ± 2 °C and 50 ± 5 % relative humidity for 48 h before two successive 10 s flame applications. A V-0 classification requires afterflame time for each specimen not to exceed 10 s, total afterflame time for five specimens not to exceed 50 s, afterflame plus afterglow after the second flame application not to exceed 30 s for each specimen, and no ignition of the cotton indicator. Toray Industries ABS 700V0 lot certification should record the exact thickness at which V-0 is claimed; if parts contain living hinges, bosses, or snap-fit features thinner than 1.5 mm, those regions require separate evaluation.
Drying before injection molding is required to avoid splay, hydrolysis of the rubber phase, and reduction in mechanical integrity. A desiccant dryer with dew point below -20 °C and drying temperature of 80 °C for 3–4 h is used to bring moisture below 0.05 % by weight. On production lines with hopper systems, residence time in the drying hopper should not exceed 8 h to avoid yellowing of the flame-retardant package. Barrel temperature profiles from feed throat to nozzle are typically set between 200 °C and 240 °C, with nozzle temperature held at 230 °C to 240 °C. Mold temperature is maintained at 40 °C to 80 °C; lower mold temperatures reduce cycle time but increase frozen-in stress and may reduce UL 94 performance at weld lines.
Injection speed is kept in the moderate range rather than high-shear conditions. A three-zone general-purpose screw with L/D of 20:1 to 22:1 and compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 is preferred for homogeneous melt without excessive shear heating. Screw rotation speed below 120 min⁻¹ and back pressure below 10 MPa hydraulic limit frictional temperature rise. Accumulation of degraded flame-retardant residue at vent ports or mold surfaces indicates that melt temperature has exceeded 250 °C or residence time has exceeded 10 min. On twin-screw compounding lines, L/D ratios of 36:1 to 44:1 with vacuum venting are used to disperse the flame-retardant package without exceeding the thermal degradation threshold of the rubber phase.
Flame-retardant ABS grades exhibit a narrower thermal processing window than general-purpose ABS because the additive system increases viscosity sensitivity to temperature and shear. The melt flow ratio between 220 °C and 240 °C can shift by more than 10 % per 10 °C, making cavity balance sensitive to nozzle and runner temperature control. Processors evaluate flow length ratio using spiral molds and in-mold pressure sensors rather than relying on melt mass-flow rate alone. The risk of residual stress cracking in flame-retardant ABS is higher at gate sites and around metal inserts; post-mold shrinkage and warpage should be measured after 48 h of conditioning at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity in accordance with ISO 291.
When regrind is used, addition above 20 % by weight can reduce flame-retardant performance and notched impact strength because the additive package undergoes partial degradation during first processing. If regrind is allowed by the application specification, it should be dried separately and blended by automatic gravimetric dosing; manual preblends introduce lot-to-lot variation. Notched Charpy impact data measured according to ISO 179-1/1eA should be generated from dry-as-molded specimens because moisture conditioning changes the brittle-ductile transition and may mask the true effect of recycled content.
Compared with general-purpose TOYOLAC 700, Toray Industries ABS 700V0 typically exhibits higher density, reduced room-temperature impact strength, and lower maximum continuous use temperature under load. Compared with polycarbonate/ABS blends, it offers lower heat deflection temperature and lower multiaxial impact resistance but avoids the higher melt viscosity and higher processing temperatures of PC/ABS. General-purpose ABS does not carry a UL 94 V-0 rating at 1.5 mm.

PC/ABS blends can meet V-0 at similar thickness but require mold temperatures up to 80 °C and drying at 100 °C for 4 h. The choice between Toray Industries ABS 700V0 and a PC/ABS blend in an enclosure application depends on heat deflection temperature under load and chemical exposure to battery electrolyte or cleaning agents. PC/ABS provides higher ISO 75-2/A deflection temperature but may exhibit greater sensitivity to alkaline cleaners; ABS 700V0 is more susceptible to organic solvents such as methyl ethyl ketone and toluene.
Substitution of ABS 700V0 by PC/ABS in an enclosure tool designed for flame-retardant ABS is not drop-in. The higher melt viscosity and higher recommended mold temperature of PC/ABS shift fill pressure requirements and can overload injection units sized for ABS. Clamp force requirements increase by approximately 10 % to 20 % for equivalent flow length because cavity pressure rises; molders should verify hydraulic clamp force against the projected area multiplied by an estimated cavity pressure of 30 MPa to 40 MPa. Reverse substitution from PC/ABS to ABS 700V0 can leave short shots unless the ABS melt temperature is raised to the upper limit of 240 °C and injection velocity is increased moderately.
When molded parts are exposed to battery electrolyte, flame-retardant additives can migrate to the surface and alter contact resistance. Contact resistance is measured according to IEC 60512-2-1; a shift above 10 mΩ after 500 h of thermal aging at 85 °C may indicate additive exudation at the connector contact zone. Mold release agents based on silicone are generally compatible; amine-based lubricants can react with the flame-retardant system and should be avoided.
Regulatory compliance for electrical and electronic equipment requires verification of flame retardants against the restriction directives. Table 2 lists the relevant standard designations that should appear in a compliance summary.
| Requirement | Standard or regulation |
| V-0 vertical burn classification | UL 94 |
| Density | ISO 1183-1 |
| Melt mass-flow rate | ISO 1133-1 |
| Tensile properties | ISO 527-2 |
| Flexural properties | ISO 178 |
| Charpy impact | ISO 179-1 |
| Restriction of hazardous substances | IEC 62321 series |
| REACH SVHC statement | EC No 1907/2006 |
| Halogen-free verification, if required | IEC 61249-2-21 |
Under IEC 62321 test methods, lead, cadmium, mercury, and hexavalent chromium concentrations must not exceed the limits in Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II. For REACH, the supplier should provide a statement under EC No 1907/2006 confirming the absence of listed Substances of Very High Concern above 0.1 % by weight per article. Halogen-free requirements are not automatically met by all flame-retardant ABS grades; if an application specifies halogen-free materials under IEC 61249-2-21, the exact additive chemistry of the lot must be confirmed by the manufacturer. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, so verification against the lot certificate is required.
Storage conditions should be maintained at 5 °C to 35 °C and 50 % relative humidity or below, with sealed original containers until drying. Avoid contact with amine-based mold release agents, some epoxy-based regrind additives, and certain phenolic antioxidants at processing temperatures because these can interact with the flame-retardant system and cause color shift or plate-out. When drums are opened, drying should be scheduled immediately before molding rather than stockpiling open containers.
