Toray Industries ABS 700-314U is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer injection-molding compound supplied within the Toyolac ABS product line. The grade is identified in manufacturer literature as a UV-stabilized, high-flow ABS for unpainted appearance components. The designation 700-314U differentiates the material from general-purpose Toyolac grades by the presence of an ultraviolet-stabilizer package and a melt rheology calibrated for thin-wall filling. The product is not a polycarbonate/ABS alloy; published data for the specific polymer matrix configuration are limited to standard ABS characterisation and should not be extrapolated to polycarbonate-based blends.
Density is typically reported at 1.05 g/cm³ according to ISO 1183-1:2019. Melt mass-flow rate is commonly measured at 220 °C with 10 kg load under ISO 1133-1:2022; the resulting flow classification places this material among high-flow injection-molding ABS grades. The material is opaque in natural or colored formulations, and the UV-stabiliser system is intended to delay change in yellowness index and surface gloss under window-filtered sunlight, not to replace opaque pigmentation for long-term exterior load-bearing use.
The primary product differences are observed in melt fluidity, stabiliser content, and rubber-phase toughness distribution. Compared with general-purpose Toyolac ABS, 700-314U is adjusted to a higher melt mass-flow rate, which reduces injection pressure drop in thin sections and shortens cooling-limited cycle time. This flow increase is generally accompanied by lower melt viscosity and a moderate reduction in Charpy notched impact strength relative to high-impact grades such as Toyolac 500.
Against Toyolac 400 plating-grade ABS, the 700-314U product does not provide the controlled butadiene domain morphology required for chromic acid etch adhesion in electroplating. Tensile yield stress and flexural modulus are similar to general-purpose ABS, but plating adhesion values are not directly comparable. Published data for this specific configuration are limited. Substitution into plated automotive or plumbing components therefore requires a separate plating trial and adhesion validation.
Against heat-resistant Toyolac 900 and 930 grades, the deflection temperature under load is lower. Continuous-use temperature for 700-314U should be limited to approximately 70–80 °C for unstressed or lightly stressed applications; load-bearing components at elevated temperature require certified heat deflection values from the lot-specific datasheet. Dimensional stability also decreases as the material approaches its heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa.
Flame retardant grades such as Toyolac 600 contain halogenated or phosphorus-based additives to achieve UL 94 V-0 classifications. 700-314U is not formulated to meet V-0 requirements and is normally classified HB at standard thicknesses. Substitution into electrical enclosures must be evaluated against IEC 60695-11-10 and UL 746C end-use conditions. The UV-stabiliser package does not impart flame-retardant properties.
ABS pellets absorb moisture through surface diffusion. At 50% relative humidity and 23 °C, equilibrium moisture is typically 0.2–0.4 wt%. Processing with moisture above 0.05 wt% produces splay marks, surface streaks, and apparent viscosity loss. The material should be dried in a closed-loop desiccant dryer at 80–90 °C for 3–4 h to a residual moisture below 0.05 wt%, with dew point below −30 °C and airflow of at least 0.5 m³/h per kg/h pellet throughput. If pellets are exposed to relative humidity above 60% for more than 4 h after drying, re-drying is required.
Injection-molding machine configuration affects melt homogeneity. A general-purpose screw with L/D ratio of 20:1 and compression ratio between 2.0:1 and 2.5:1 is sufficient for this grade. Barrel settings are typically profiled from 210 °C at the rear zone to 240 °C at the front zone, with nozzle temperature maintained at 240–250 °C. Mold temperature should be maintained between 40 °C and 80 °C; higher mold temperatures improve surface gloss and weld-line strength but extend cooling time and may promote plate-out from the UV-stabiliser package if residence times are excessive.
Melt residence time should not exceed 5 min at 240 °C. Prolonged residence or hot spots above 280 °C degrade the butadiene phase and UV stabilizer, producing brown streaking, monomer odour, and reduced impact strength. Screw speed of 30–60 rpm and back pressure of 0.3–0.7 MPa are typical for homogeneous melt without excessive shear heating. Shot size should be maintained between 30% and 70% of barrel capacity to limit residence-time variation.
For thin-wall filling, the high-flow design permits nominal wall thickness down to 1.0 mm in properly vented tools. Vent depth should not exceed 0.03–0.05 mm for ABS to avoid flash. Gates should be located to avoid direct impingement and jeting; a 20–30% weld-line strength reduction relative to bulk should be assumed for design stress calculations. Published data for this specific configuration are limited, so mold-filling simulation inputs should be calibrated with actual spiral-flow or short-shot data from the production lot.
Application contexts for 700-314U are dominated by unpainted indoor and protected outdoor appearance parts. In automotive interiors, the grade is used for door-panel insert frames, switch bezels, center-console side finishers, and instrument-cluster surrounds where low-gloss or textured surfaces require resistance to discoloration from sunlight passing through glass. These components are typically molded with a cold or hot runner system; cold sprue and runner regrind should be limited to 20–30% by weight to preserve UV-stabilizer content and impact stability.
Tensile yield stress for the grade is measured according to ISO 527-2:2012, flexural properties according to ISO 178:2019, and Charpy notched impact according to ISO 179-1:2010. These values are reported at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity; they are not equivalent to low-temperature performance. At −20 °C, notched impact falls sharply relative to room-temperature values, so snap-fit designs must be evaluated with low-temperature impact testing or dynamic mechanical analysis before production release.
Colour and gloss retention are influenced by pigment loading, mold temperature, and regrind content. For UV-stabilized ABS, weathering comparisons are typically made using ISO 4892-2:2013 cycle A or automotive OEM methods; the grade is not intended for unpainted exterior body panels. If an application requires long-term outdoor exposure exceeding 12 months with tight gloss retention, an ASA or ASA/PC grade should be selected unless the component is painted or otherwise shielded.
Plating-grade Toyolac 400 is formulated with controlled polybutadiene particle size and crosslinking to withstand chromic acid etch and electroless nickel/copper deposition. 700-314U is not designed for this process. If substituted in plated grille or bezel applications, plating adhesion as measured by peel test or thermal cycle is likely to fall below automotive specification limits because the rubber phase lacks the required etch micro-roughness. No published adhesion data are available for this specific configuration, and validation is required before any plating trial.
Heat-resistant grades Toyolac 900 and 930 have higher glass transition temperatures and higher heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa. For components exposed to 85–100 °C under load, 700-314U is not appropriate. Creep and stress relaxation become significant at temperatures approaching the heat deflection limit; fastening bosses and snap features can lose retention force, and dimensional tolerance may shift beyond design limits.
Chemical exposure boundaries are those of standard ABS. Ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated solvents soften or dissolve the matrix; methyl ethyl ketone, toluene, and trichloroethylene should not be used for cleaning. Environmental stress-cracking risk increases when the molded part is in contact with plasticized PVC, certain lubricants, or hand creams; testing under ISO 22088-2:2006 is recommended if incidental contact is expected.
Flammability classification is typically HB under UL 94 at 1.5 mm and greater; the grade contains no halogenated or phosphorus-based flame-retardant package. It must not be used for enclosures requiring V-0, V-1, or 5VA without additional verification. Electrical installation applications should be assessed under IEC 60695-11-10 and IEC 60695-2-11 glow-wire end-product requirements.
Before using 700-314U in a formal design, the following representative physical property values are useful for preliminary comparison. The values are drawn from typical Toray Toyolac 700-series technical literature and are not limiting specifications. Lot-specific certificate values may differ because colour concentrate and regrind content modify final properties.

Compliance status for ABS 700-314U must be confirmed against the specific production lot, color formulation, and supply-chain declaration. The following matrix identifies the relevant frameworks that commonly apply to ABS molding compounds in electrical, business-equipment, and consumer-facing applications. It is not a regulatory certification for the product.
| Regulatory framework | Standard or clause | Verification boundary |
|---|---|---|
| EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU | Annex II restricted substances | Homogeneous material limits for lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, PBDE |
| REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 | Article 33 SVHC communication | Substances above 0.1% w/w in article; lot-specific supplier declaration required |
| FDA food-contact ABS | 21 CFR 177.1020 | Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer with extractive limits; final article testing required |
| Recycling identification | ISO 11469:2021 | Marking as >ABS< for polymer identification |
| Flammability | UL 94 | HB class at specified thickness; color and regrind may alter classification |
| Environmental stress cracking | ISO 22088-2:2006 | Application-specific chemical contact testing required |
Lot-specific supplementary documentation such as a certificate of analysis, REACH declaration, and UL Yellow Card should be requested from the compounder or Toray representative before production release. Test plaques should be molded under the same processing conditions as the final component, because barrel temperature, mold temperature, and regrind ratio affect final mechanical, colour, and regulatory outcomes.
