Toray Industries ABS 600-X06 is an injection-moulding acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene grade positioned as a high-flow member of the Toyolac ABS series. The material is specified where reduced melt viscosity, faster cavity filling, and stable filling of thin-wall, multi-cavity tools are more important than maximum low-temperature impact. Publicly available Toyolac commercial summaries describe the grade as a general-purpose ABS with a melt volume-flow rate near 33 cm³/10 min under ISO 1133-1 at 220°C and 10 kg, tensile stress at yield near 43 MPa under ISO 527-2, and flexural modulus near 2400 MPa under ISO 178. These figures are representative release-range values and are not a substitute for a certificate of analysis.
The melt volume-flow rate measured under ISO 1133-1 with 220°C/10 kg is the primary differentiator for 600-X06. At approximately 33 cm³/10 min, the grade provides enough volumetric throughput for tools with flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratios above 120:1 when processed at a melt temperature of 230–250°C. In thin-wall and multi-cavity moulding, this reduces gate pressure demand by an estimated 15–25% relative to lower-flow Toyolac grades with melt volume-flow rates in the 10–18 cm³/10 min range. Capillary rheometry indicates shear-thinning behaviour that permits use of 20–25 mm diameter reciprocating screws at an L/D ratio of 20:1 without excessive screw recovery torque. On 100–120 ton clamp force machines with hot-runner systems, screw back pressure is normally held at 0.5–1.5 MPa hydraulic to avoid gas trapping while maintaining a cushion of 3–5 mm. Batch-to-batch variation in melt volume-flow rate is typically controlled within approximately ±2 cm³/10 min; however, filling imbalance has been observed in tools with more than 16 cavities when manifold channel temperatures vary beyond ±2°C.
Thin-wall cordless-tool clamshell housings, desktop printer chassis, and small-appliance control-panel frames are common application fields for 600-X06 because nominal wall stock of 1.2–2.0 mm can be filled at acceptable clamp tonnage. Mould shrinkage evaluated under ISO 294-4 is generally 0.5–0.7% parallel and perpendicular to flow, which requires tool designers to allocate differing shrinkage allowances for ribbed bosses and snap-fit undercuts. When mould filling is performed at 230°C melt temperature and 40°C mould temperature, rib sections below 0.8 mm should be analysed with short-shot studies for hesitation marks; otherwise, knit lines at the base of bosses can reduce notched Charpy impact under ISO 179-1/1eA by 10–15% relative to plain panel sections.
The Toyolac series includes lower-flow, general-purpose grades such as 100-X01 and impact-modified grades such as 500-X01. The main structural difference is rubber-phase content and matrix molecular weight distribution. In 600-X06, the butadiene rubber phase is retained at a moderate level, while the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix is designed for lower pressure drop during mould filling. The consequence is a lower notched Charpy impact value than high-impact 500-X01 but improved melt fluidity. Under ISO 179-1/1eA at 23°C, 600-X06 typically falls near 18 kJ/m², whereas high-impact extrusion grades can exceed 30 kJ/m². Under ISO 1133-1, the same high-impact grades usually exhibit only one-third to one-half the melt volume-flow rate of 600-X06. For an injection moulder, 600-X06 is therefore selected when the part has long flow paths, thin walls, or a high gate count; it is not selected when sub-zero impact or high abuse tolerance is the controlling requirement.

Processors substituting 600-X06 into a tool originally qualified with a lower-flow ABS should verify the injection-pressure gradient and gate freeze time. Because higher-flow materials exhibit lower viscosity but can also display reduced melt strength, edge-gated parts may show higher jetting at short injection times. The remedy is to hold melt temperature at the lower end of the processing window and use a profiled injection velocity of 30–50 mm/s through the gate rather than a single high-speed fill. No change in mould steel or surface coating is required when compared with other unfilled Toyolac ABS grades.
For high-gloss covers, reducing melt temperature below 230°C assists colour stability but raises viscosity, increasing packing pressure and the risk of sink marks above ribs. Mould temperature is therefore maintained at 50–70°C with pressurized water or oil temperature-control units operating in turbulent flow. Under those conditions, 600-X06 can meet a 60° gloss unit reading under ISO 2813 at 20° geometry when the tool surface is polished to SPI A-2 or better. Below 40°C mould temperature, weld-line visibility increases and gloss readings can fall by 10–20 units; above 70°C, cycle time lengthens and ejection may mark the softened surface. The operating window is therefore process-critical for parts combining 1.0–1.5 mm ribs and appearance surfaces.
As with other Toyolac ABS grades, 600-X06 is hygroscopic enough to require pre-drying when exposed to ambient humidity above 60% RH for more than 30 min. Recommended drying uses dehumidified air with a dew point of -30°C or lower at 80°C for 3–4 hours to reach residual moisture below 0.05 wt% determined by ISO 15512. Insufficient drying produces silver streaks, gate splay, and reduced notched impact. Regrind from sprues and runners may be added at 20 wt% maximum for structural parts and 30 wt% maximum for non-appearance parts. Repeated recycling above three cycles reduces Charpy impact by an additional 5–10% owing to rubber-phase crosslinking and SAN chain scission. Residence time at melt temperatures above 250°C should not exceed 15 min; otherwise, volatile monomer odour increases and mould deposits may form on vent surfaces. Avoid contamination with acetal or polyvinyl chloride, which can generate acidic or formaldehyde-based decomposition products that attack the butadiene phase.
