    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Toray Industries ABS 520-X17 is a high-flow acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer injection moulding grade marketed within the Toyolac product line. The material consists of a continuous styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer matrix surrounding discrete polybutadiene rubber domains; this biphasic structure gives the grade its characteristic balance of practical toughness, rigidity, and processability. The 520-X17 designation is associated in supplier literature with fast cavity filling at moderate clamp forces, but the manufacturer’s public technical datasheet for this specific numerical suffix is not always accompanied by the same level of traceable lot data that is available for adjacent Toyolac 500-series and 700-series grades. When lot-specific certification is required, the certificate of analysis should be compared against the processing window before mould release. The base polymer is typically supplied as cylindrical pellets with a bulk density measured in accordance with ISO 60:1977 in the range 600–700 kg/m³ and packing moisture below 0.10 % by mass for sealed containers.

Classification under ISO 2580-1:2019 covers ABS moulding and extrusion materials; 520-X17 falls within the injection-moulding category intended for thin-wall electrical, appliance, and consumer component production. The continuous SAN phase contributes stiffness and chemical resistance, while the dispersed butadiene phase contributes impact. The molecular weight distribution of 520-X17 is shifted toward a lower high-molecular-weight fraction to increase melt flow, which reduces melt strength, solvent resistance, and upper service temperature relative to higher-viscosity grades. This makes the material less suitable for extrusion or blow moulding, where melt strength is critical. Supplier documentation indicates that mould shrinkage in the flow direction can exceed cross-flow shrinkage by 0.1–0.2 percentage points in long thin sections, requiring tool compensation for dimensional accuracy.

What Processing Constraints Apply When Filling Walls Below 1.5 mm?

Pre-drying in a desiccant dryer equipped with a dew-point monitor is required whenever sealed packaging is broken beyond 2 h at ambient relative humidity above 60 %. Typical drying conditions are 80–90 °C for 2–4 h to reach a residual moisture target below 0.05 % by mass. Hopper drying temperatures higher than 95 °C can cause pellet agglomeration and should be avoided when long interruptions are expected.

A general-purpose single-screw injection unit with an L/D ratio of 20:1–25:1 and compression ratio 2.0:1–2.5:1 is adequate for this grade. Barrel settings commonly follow a rising profile from 210 °C in the rear zone to 240–250 °C at the nozzle, yielding a melt temperature between 230 °C and 250 °C. Mould temperature should be held between 40 °C and 80 °C; the lower half of this range improves cycle time but may reduce weld-line strength in parts with multiple gates. For wall sections below 1.5 mm, injection velocity is raised to 80–150 mm/s and back pressure is limited to 0.5–1.5 MPa to avoid excessive screw recovery time.

High-flow grades such as 520-X17 are sensitive to residence time because the polybutadiene phase undergoes thermal oxidation at upper melt temperatures. At 250 °C, total barrel residence time beyond 5–8 min can produce yellowing and a measurable fall in notched impact. Production lines with hot-runner systems should be purged after 15 min of tool interruption; if the tool remains open, the screw should be pulled back and the nozzle temperature reduced by 20 °C. Gate shear can raise local melt temperature by 10–20 °C, so fill time, gate diameter, and injection pressure should be logged to separate shear heating from barrel melt temperature.

Short-term mechanical values reported for 520-X17 in supplier literature are generated on ISO specimens conditioned for 40 h at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity before testing. The following envelope reflects the commercial data band for a high-flow ABS of this class rather than a certified lot average; moulders should use the certificate of analysis for release testing because normal resin variation can shift individual values by several percent.

Charpy values at -30 °C are typically 40–60 % lower than the 23 °C values, which restricts the use of 520-X17 in load-bearing fastenings exposed to freezing conditions. The combination of moderate heat deflection temperature and fast flow fill makes the grade suitable for large-area but not for continuous service above 85 °C under mechanical load. In flexural fatigue, ABS of this flow class displays a knee-point in S-N curves near 10⁶ cycles; published data for 520-X17 at that specific cycle count is limited, and part-level validation under ISO 178 three-point bending or ISO 527-2 tensile fatigue is recommended.

When 520-X17 Replaces a Slower-Flowing Toyolac Grade in an Existing Tool

Direct substitution of 520-X17 for a general-purpose Toyolac 100-series or high-impact Toyolac 500-series is not a drop-in operation, despite identical pellet geometry and drying equipment. The primary difference is a lower apparent melt viscosity at shear rates typical of injection moulding, which shortens fill time and may reduce injection pressure by 10–25 % relative to a grade with melt volume-flow rate below 12 cm³/10 min. That advantage is frequently realized only when the tool has adequate vent depth, because high-velocity flow fronts can trap gas more rapidly. Published data for this specific comparative configuration is limited; short-shot studies on the production tool should be used to map pressure-limited fill.

Against Toyolac 500-series impact grades, 520-X17 sacrifices a portion of notched impact and heat capability. The higher-flow molecular weight distribution can reduce Charpy notched impact by 15–30 % and lower HDT by 3–8 °C under the same test conditions. Against Toyolac 700-series rigid grades, 520-X17 typically exhibits lower flexural modulus by 5–15 % but better practical toughness, making it less prone to corner cracking in snap-fit geometries. These differences are class-level relationships; when the exact X17 suffix represents an undisclosed lubricant or color package, plate-out on core pins and mould deposit rates should be monitored against the incumbent grade.

Because the melt temperature window is similar to other Toyolac grades, gate freeze time is controlled by mould temperature and part thickness. However, the higher flow length can permit smaller gate diameters; reducing a side gate from 1.0 mm to 0.6 mm without adjusting hold pressure may create sink marks and weld-line weakness. Packing pressure should be set from a gate-sealing study rather than from a general ABS profile. Colored versions may shift flow length by a few percent due to pigment nucleating effects; masterbatch addition should be limited to 2 wt% and evaluated under ISO 1133-1:2022.

Regulatory documentation for ABS 520-X17 is issued at the lot level and typically contains statements for the RoHS 2 Directive 2011/65/EU and its amending Directive 2015/863. Supplier declarations are also available for REACH Regulation EC 1907/2006 with respect to Candidate List substances under Article 33. The grade is not automatically cleared for food-contact or medical-device use; product-specific FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 or EU 10/2011 compliance must be confirmed in writing before those applications are considered. Published data for this specific configuration is limited for repeated-use food-contact or pharmaceutical packaging. Flammability of the natural grade is generally HB at 1.5 mm under UL 94; published data at 0.8 mm is limited.

ABS 520-X17 should not be exposed to ketones, esters, chlorinated solvents, or aromatic hydrocarbons under stress; such fluids accelerate environmental stress cracking at weld lines and gate vestiges. Cleaning with release agents containing silicone or hydrocarbon carriers can contaminate regrind and degrade paint adhesion. Hot-air drying above 95 °C, or regrind ratios above 30 wt%, may increase yellowing and surface splay. When the resin is stored at ambient temperatures above 40 °C for extended periods, sealed packaging should be checked for moisture uptake; if bulk surface moisture exceeds 0.15 %, a secondary desiccant drying step is required before processing. UV stability of unpainted ABS 520-X17 is finite; prolonged outdoor exposure produces chalking and embrittlement of the butadiene phase. Black grades with carbon black show improved UV resistance, but published data for this specific color package is limited and accelerated weathering should be conducted under ISO 4892-2 Method A before exterior specification.
