    More Introduction

Toray Industries, Inc. supplies the acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer designated ABS 470Y-TG1 within the Toyolac resin family. The grade is formulated for high-flow injection molding of thin-wall components in which melt filling, surface appearance, and impact resistance are balanced against fast cycle-time requirements. The material consists of a styrene-acrylonitrile continuous phase and dispersed polybutadiene rubber domains; the TG1 suffix identifies a specific stabilizer and lubricant package within the manufacturer’s series designation. Typical physical data reported for the Toyolac 470Y series include a density of 1.04 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1:2019 and a melt mass-flow rate of approximately 24 g/10 min at 220 °C and 10 kg load under ISO 1133-1:2022. Lot-specific values for the TG1 variant are controlled by the certificate of analysis and may vary by production site; the following series data are not design allowable limits.

Melt Rheology, Drying Thresholds, and Injection-Molding Envelope

Before processing, moisture content is reduced to below 0.05 wt% in a desiccant dryer with a dew point at or below -30 °C. A drying temperature of 80 °C to 85 °C for 3 h to 4 h is standard for the Toyolac 470Y class; wet resin produces splay, weld-line weakness, and unstable melt-flow behavior. On production-scale injection machines, a general-purpose screw with 20:1 to 24:1 L/D and a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 is acceptable, although a low-compression or mixing screw may be used when color masterbatch dispersion is critical. Shot-weight calculations should use a melt density near 0.95 g/cm³ rather than solid density because the melt density at processing temperature is lower than the room-temperature solid value.

Capillary rheometry data for the 470Y series indicate shear-thinning behavior typical of high-flow ABS. Apparent viscosity decreases from approximately 250 Pa·s to 80 Pa·s as the apparent shear rate increases from 100 s⁻¹ to 1,000 s⁻¹ at 230 °C. This shear sensitivity supports thin-wall filling at reduced hydraulic pressure compared with lower-flow ABS grades. Recommended melt temperature at the nozzle is 220 °C to 250 °C; mold temperature is maintained at 40 °C to 80 °C, with lower mold temperatures favoring surface gloss and higher mold temperatures improving weld-line strength. Melt temperatures exceeding 260 °C accelerate degradation of the polybutadiene phase and can produce yellowing, release deposits, and reduced notched impact retention.

Representative mechanical values for the Toyolac 470Y series include a tensile yield stress of 42 MPa at 50 mm/min under ISO 527-2:2012, flexural modulus of 2,000 MPa at 2 mm/min under ISO 178:2019, and notched Izod impact of 18 kJ/m² at 23 °C under ISO 180:2019. These are dry-as-molded single-point values. For structural calculations, lower tolerance limits should be established from lot testing and final part validation because pigment loading, regrind ratio, and molding conditions shift the dataset.

Thin-wall electrical enclosure production uses 470Y-TG1 when the combination of 18 kJ/m² notched Izod impact at 23 °C under ISO 180:2019 and a tensile yield stress of 42 MPa under ISO 527-2:2012 is sufficient for snap-fit retention and customer-specific drop testing. Multi-cavity tools with wall sections of 1.2 mm to 2.0 mm and tunnel gates are processed with lower injection pressure than a general-purpose ABS because the grade is designed for reduced viscous heating at high apparent shear rates. On polished cavity surfaces, the material produces high gloss; however, gloss retention depends on mold temperature uniformity, gate vestige control, and packing-pressure profile. If hydraulic injection pressure is maintained below 90 MPa and fill velocity is staged, short-shot defects in thin sections are reduced in comparison with lower-flow ABS grades.

Automotive interior trim components such as switch bezels and speaker grilles are produced from this grade in black and precolored variants. For automotive interior applications, material suppliers may provide test reports for total volatile organic compounds and fogging under VDA 278 and ISO 6452; the processor must request grade-specific reports because color concentrates and processing aids influence emissions. The product is not formulated for outdoor ultraviolet resistance unless a UV-stabilized variant is specifically confirmed for the application. Continuous service above 85 °C under mechanical load is not recommended because creep and stress relaxation can reduce dimensional stability.

How Does 470Y-TG1 Compare with High-Impact, Heat-Resistant, and Plating ABS Grades?

Relative to high-impact ABS grades such as Toyolac 700, 470Y-TG1 exhibits higher melt mass-flow rate and improved ability to fill thin sections, but lower notched Izod impact and reduced resistance to constrained slow crack propagation. Under ISO 180:2019, high-impact ABS may exceed 25 kJ/m² at 23 °C, whereas this high-flow grade generally operates in the 18 kJ/m² to 20 kJ/m² range depending on specimen preparation and color. The higher flow is achieved through molecular weight control and rubber-phase modification; this changes melt elasticity, can reduce die swell, and may lower gate blush at high injection velocities. For load-bearing snap arms, the lower impact values require a radius above 0.5 mm at the snap-arm root and gate placement that avoids weld lines in tensile zones.

Against electroplating ABS, 470Y-TG1 is not designed for adhesion to electroless deposits after chromic-acid etching. Plating-grade ABS uses a controlled rubber particle size distribution and surface chemistry to produce a microporous surface that accepts electroless nickel or copper after etching and neutralization. The TG1 grade is intended for bright or textured molded surfaces rather than plated surfaces. Published data for chromium adhesion of 470Y-TG1 under ISO 2819:2017 is limited, and plated-part performance is outside the standard application envelope. Compared with heat-resistant ABS, 470Y-TG1 has lower heat deflection temperature and lower Vicat softening temperature. Heat-resistant ABS grades can exceed 100 °C HDT/A at 1.82 MPa, while 470Y-TG1 remains at approximately 89 °C under ISO 75-2:2013. Compared with transparent ABS, 470Y-TG1 is opaque because polybutadiene domains scatter visible light; it is not suitable for light-transmission applications tested under ISO 13468-2:2021.

    When Hot-Runner Manifold Temperatures Exceed 250 °C

Thermal stability limits are governed by the polybutadiene phase and the stabilizer package. At hot-runner manifold temperatures above 250 °C, the melt can degrade at residence times longer than 10 min to 15 min, producing yellowing, loss of notched impact, and deposit formation on vent surfaces. In production trials with eight-drop hot-runner systems, cavity-to-cavity pressure variation increased when degraded material accumulated at gate tips; thermocouple drift of 3 °C to 5 °C was sufficient to create visible color shifts in natural and white resins. The barrel temperature profile should be set with a rear zone of 180 °C to 200 °C, a middle zone of 210 °C to 230 °C, and a nozzle of 220 °C to 250 °C. Actual melt temperature should be checked with an immersion probe before the run is approved.

For a typical 40 mm screw, maximum screw speed should be limited to approximately 0.4 m/s to 0.6 m/s peripheral speed; excessive screw rotation raises melt temperature through shear heating and may increase the melt-flow rate beyond the specified range. Back pressure is held at 5 bar to 10 bar hydraulic, avoiding long plastication residence times. The grade is incompatible with high moisture levels, which cause hydrolytic chain scission during processing and surface splay. It is also not recommended for direct contact with ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons, or strong organic solvents; chemical resistance should be validated under ISO 22088-2:2006 environmental stress cracking procedures where applicable. The material should not be combined with low-molecular-weight brominated flame-retardant masterbatches that can cause plate-out and gas staining at processing temperatures; if flame-retardant modification is required, the final compound must be re-evaluated under UL 94 and ISO 4589-2:2017.

Regulatory and lot-level release of 470Y-TG1 should be verified before production. The material is generally supplied as natural or precolored pellets; regrind may be incorporated up to 30 wt% if the processor validates melt-flow rate, notched Izod impact, and color change after repeated heat histories. A certification package may include REACH, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and automotive interior emission test reports; food-contact status is not automatically implied and must be confirmed for the specific regulatory regime. If a component requires a UL 94 classification higher than HB, the unmodified grade is not the appropriate selection, and published data for flame-retardant-modified variants is limited. Dimensional validation of molded parts should follow ISO 294-4:2018 for shrinkage and ISO 291:2008 for standard conditioning before measurement.
