Toray Industries ABS 315-X01 is an unfilled acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer supplied in pellet form under the Toyolac ABS designation. The grade is specified for injection-moulded components where thin-wall filling, short cycle time, and medium impact resistance are jointly required. Representative datasheet values are consolidated in Table 1. Melt volume-flow rate measured at 220 °C under 10 kg load is 42 cm³/10 min according to ISO 1133-1:2022. Density is 1.04 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1. Tensile yield stress is 43 MPa under ISO 527-2, flexural modulus is 2100 MPa under ISO 178, and Charpy notched impact strength at 23 °C is 16 kJ/m² under ISO 179-1/1eA. The deflection temperature at 1.80 MPa is 86 °C under ISO 75-2, and Vicat softening temperature Method B50 is 95 °C under ISO 306. The base natural pellets are normally self-coloured or masterbatch-dosed; no filler or flame-retardant system is present in the standard grade.

Flow length in thin-wall sections is controlled by melt temperature, mould temperature, injection velocity, and the solidification rate of the SAN matrix. At a melt temperature of 230 °C and a mould temperature of 50 °C, part sections with nominal wall thickness of 1.2 mm are filled in production tools when runner diameter and gate geometry maintain shear rates below 50,000 s⁻¹. Above this shear rate, frictional heating raises the gate melt temperature by 8–12 °C, lowering viscosity but increasing the risk of surface degradation, jetting, and splay. The interaction creates a practical processing window of ±5 °C around the set melt temperature, particularly in hot-runner systems where residence time is not uniform across the manifold.
Spiral flow length measured in a 2 mm test mould at 230 °C is typically 38–45 cm for this melt-flow class. Where direct spiral-flow data for the X01 modification is unavailable, laboratory spiral evaluation is required before multi-cavity tool design. Injection pressure at the transfer point should not exceed 120 MPa hydraulic pressure on a 350 t machine, and switch-over to holding pressure is normally set at 95–98 % of shot volume. These limits are based on production trials with general-purpose screws having 36:1 L/D ratio and 2.5:1 compression ratio.
Desiccant drying is mandatory for ABS 315-X01 when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %. Residual moisture above 0.05 wt% generates splay in hot-runner tools and reduces screw recovery stability. Drying at 80–85 °C for 3–4 h with a desiccant dryer dew point of −30 °C or lower is typical. Moisture verification by loss-on-drying or Karl Fischer titration is required before start-up. Overdrying above 95 °C or drying beyond 8 h can cause pellet clumping and a measurable reduction in Charpy notched impact strength.
Barrel temperature profiles are normally set in reverse profile: feed zone 40–60 °C, compression zone 200–220 °C, metering zone 220–240 °C, and nozzle 230–250 °C. The measured melt temperature should not exceed 250 °C for residence times above 10 min. Thermal decomposition of the polybutadiene phase produces free radicals that can lower Charpy notched impact from 16 kJ/m² to below 10 kJ/m² under severe overheat conditions. In hot-runner systems, manifold and drop temperatures are held 5–10 °C below the nozzle setpoint to avoid dead-spot degradation. Screw retraction is kept at 3–6 mm beyond shot size to prevent decompression-induced moisture uptake and air entrapment.
The thermal stability of ABS 315-X01 is limited by the unsaturated polybutadiene phase rather than the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix. At melt temperatures above 250 °C, polybutadiene auto-oxidation generates hydroperoxides and carbonyl species, which accelerate chain scission and form brown degradation products. In hot-runner manifolds with dead zones, this chemistry produces black specks and inconsistent Charpy notched impact values across cavities. Purging with general-purpose ABS or polystyrene is performed at 220–230 °C; purging compounds containing vinyl chloride or acetal should not be used because decomposition products accelerate SAN matrix degradation and plate-out on mould surfaces.
Residence-time limits are equipment-dependent. For 25–35 mm diameter reciprocating screws, total melt residence time should not exceed 15 min at 230 °C. For hot-runner systems with 4-cavity or 8-cavity manifolds, start-up after stoppage longer than 20 min should include a barrel purge of 1.5–2 kg before charging the manifold. Failure to purge results in elevated pour point and a reduction in the ISO 179-1/1eA Charpy notched impact strength of 10–20 % in the first-shot parts.
Applications for ABS 315-X01 include thin-wall enclosures for office automation, consumer electronics housings, keyboard frames, and small appliance components where high flow and moulding cycle reduction are specified. The grade is not typically selected for thick-wall structural components because high flow is achieved through controlled molecular weight reduction, which reduces melt strength and impact. Part designs with wall thickness below 1.5 mm and flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratios of 100:1 to 150:1 fall within the working envelope when gate diameter is not less than 0.8 mm. Compliance with RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 is supply-chain dependent; the producer declares no intentional addition of restricted substances listed in Annex II of RoHS at the time of manufacture. Food-contact status under FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 applies only if the finished article is tested for migration and the colourant, processing aid, and regrind history are covered by the producer’s food-contact statement.
Differences from other ABS grades are primarily rheological and mechanical. ABS 315-X01 exhibits a melt volume-flow rate approximately 1.7 to 2.3 times higher than general-purpose ABS grades in the same supplier range, allowing shorter injection time and lower hydraulic pressure. However, Charpy notched impact at 16 kJ/m² is 20–30 % below typical general-purpose ABS values of 22–26 kJ/m², and flexural modulus of 2100 MPa is at the lower end of the unfilled ABS distribution. Compared with high-impact ABS grades having notched impact above 28 kJ/m², the X01 modification is not suitable for parts requiring high-energy drop resistance at sub-zero temperatures. Flame-retardant ABS grades are lower flowing and require lower barrel temperatures because of bromine/antimony systems; ABS 315-X01 is not flame-retardant and carries only UL 94 HB.
When a mould is converted from a general-purpose ABS grade, shot volume, cushion, and holding pressure must be re-qualified because the lower viscosity of ABS 315-X01 can cause flash in vents and excessive part weight variation if hold pressure is not reduced. Production observations from 4-cavity and 8-cavity hot-runner tools indicate that reducing switch-over position by 2–5 % compensates for faster fill. Table 2 summarises comparative datasheet ranges.
| Typical datasheet property | ABS 315-X01 | General-purpose ABS | High-impact ABS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melt volume-flow rate, 220 °C/10 kg | 42 cm³/10 min | 18–24 cm³/10 min | 8–14 cm³/10 min |
| Charpy notched impact, 23 °C | 16 kJ/m² | 22–26 kJ/m² | 28–34 kJ/m² |
| Flexural modulus | 2100 MPa | 2300–2500 MPa | 1800–2100 MPa |
| Deflection temperature under load, 1.80 MPa | 86 °C | 88–92 °C | 84–88 °C |
Mould shrinkage is governed by wall thickness, gate geometry, and holding pressure. For a 2 mm plaque moulded at 230 °C melt temperature and 50 °C mould temperature, linear mould shrinkage is typically 0.4–0.6 % according to ISO 294-4. Post-mould dimensional stabilisation can be improved by annealing at 70–80 °C for 2 h, but annealing above 85 °C can produce warpage in parts with uneven wall thickness. Ejection temperature should be maintained below 70 °C to avoid distortion in thin-wall sections.
Chemical resistance boundaries must be observed in production. Direct contact with ketones, esters, chlorinated solvents, and vegetable-oil-based mould-release agents should be avoided because these substances migrate into the SAN phase and can reduce tensile strength. Published data for this specific X01 configuration is limited; chemical resistance for a given end-use environment should be evaluated by immersion testing under ISO 175. Only producer-approved neutral mould-release agents should be used. The grade is not inherently UV-stabilised; outdoor applications require carbon black or hindered amine stabiliser addition. Published weathering data for this specific X01 configuration is limited, and accelerated weathering under ISO 4892-2 Method A should be performed before exterior use.
Regrind levels above 20 wt% reduce notched impact by 10–15 % per pass; if regrind is used in visible parts, the maximum recommended production limit is 20 wt%. These limits are based on repeated injection-moulding trials on 25 mm reciprocating screws and should not be generalised beyond this equipment class. Hot-stamping, laser marking, and solvent bonding are feasible secondary operations. Flame treatment or corona pre-treatment should not be used because the butadiene phase oxidises rapidly and can produce surface microcracking.
