    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Toray Industries ABS 100SG5 is a pelletised acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer distributed within the Toyolac ABS grade family. The material is classified under ISO 2580-1:2019 as an injection-moulding general-purpose ABS without glass-fibre reinforcement and without polycarbonate alloying. The suffix structure in 100SG5 indicates a controlled melt-flow designation; supplier literature associates the grade with moderate flow, high surface gloss, and rigid mechanical behaviour. Because Toray Industries publishes limited multi-point data for this exact configuration, production decisions should be based on the lot certificate of analysis obtained through authorised distribution. The values discussed in this document are representative general-purpose ABS lot-control bands and must be replaced by supplier-certified values before tooling or production release.

What Is the Specification Envelope for ABS 100SG5?

Specification control for ABS 100SG5 centres on density, melt mass-flow rate, tensile yield stress, flexural modulus, notched impact, heat distortion temperature, and flammability. Specimen preparation follows ISO 20753:2018 for multipurpose test specimens and ISO 294-1:2017 for injection moulding of test specimens. The table below lists lot-control bands for general-purpose ABS. Production lots of 100SG5 should be accepted only against the supplier certificate of analysis.

Published data for this specific configuration is limited; the bands above are not a substitute for supplier certification. The melt mass-flow rate is measured at 220°C with a 10.0 kg load under ISO 1133-1:2022. This load is higher than the standard 1.2 kg test because the grade is intended for injection moulding; an inappropriate load can produce values that do not correlate with spiral-flow filling behaviour.

Pre-drying is mandatory before injection moulding. A desiccant-bed or dew-point-controlled hopper dryer is used to maintain a dew point of −30°C or lower. The pellets are dried at 80°C for 3 to 4 hours when ambient relative humidity is below 60%; if relative humidity exceeds 60%, drying is extended to 4 to 6 hours. Moisture content at the feed throat is held below 0.05% by weight. On production machines, residual moisture above this limit produces silver streaking at the gate and an observable reduction in notched impact after moulding. Drying air flow should be at least 3.8 m³/h per kg/h of resin throughput; lower air flow permits moisture re-absorption in the dryer hopper at high ambient humidity.

Melt processing is performed on a reciprocating-screw injection moulding machine with a general-purpose ABS screw. Screw geometry is typically 20:1 to 24:1 L/D with a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1. Barrel zone temperatures are set from 210°C to 240°C, with the nozzle held at 220°C to 235°C. Melt temperature is measured at the nozzle with an immersion probe and should not exceed 250°C. Above 250°C, the polybutadiene phase undergoes thermal oxidation; production lots then show yellowing, reduced Charpy impact, and gel particles visible at the part surface. Residence time at melt temperature is limited to 5 minutes or less. Shot size is maintained between 40% and 75% of barrel capacity; a smaller shot increases residence time and thermal history, while a larger shot can reduce plasticating consistency.

Mould temperature is controlled from 30°C to 60°C. At the lower end, gloss and knit-line strength are lower but cycle time is short. At the upper end, gloss is more uniform and internal stress is reduced, but cooling time lengthens and mould temperature differences above 10°C across the cavity can create differential shrinkage and visible gloss banding. Injection pressure on production machines is generally set by cavity filling requirements; typical hydraulic injection pressures for ABS 100SG5 are 80 to 120 MPa at the nozzle. Holding pressure is set from 50% to 70% of the peak injection pressure for 2 to 6 seconds, depending on gate freeze time. Back pressure during screw recovery is 0.5 to 1.5 MPa and screw speed is kept between 30 and 80 min⁻¹. High back pressure or high screw speed raises melt temperature by viscous shear heating and may push the melt into the degradation range even if barrel set points remain moderate.

Clamp force is calculated from the projected area of the part. For ABS 100SG5 the required clamp force is usually 0.4 to 0.6 metric tons-force per square centimetre of projected area. Lower clamp force leads to flash at the parting line; higher clamp force can vent poorly and produce burn marks or short shots. Vent depths on the tool are kept between 0.02 and 0.03 mm for ABS. Vacuum-assisted venting is used when thin-wall sections below 1.0 mm are moulded.

ABS 100SG5 exhibits pseudoplastic behaviour. Under typical injection shear rates of 10³ to 10⁴ s⁻¹, viscosity decreases with increasing shear. Melt mass-flow rate alone is a single-point low-shear measurement and does not fully predict thin-wall filling. Capillary rheometry under ISO 11443:2021 can be used to compare flow; a material with identical MFR but lower high-shear viscosity may fill thin sections more easily. Production-scale observations on colouring lines using twin-screw extruders with 32:1 to 44:1 L/D show that kneading-block sections can raise melt temperature above barrel set points; melt temperature at the die should be monitored to avoid exceeding 250°C during high-shear dispersion of pigments.

When 100SG5 Replaces Unfilled ABS in Injection Moulding

Replacement of an existing unfilled ABS grade with 100SG5 requires a review of melt-flow length, impact, and surface-gloss balance. In comparison with high-flow Toyolac grades such as the 900 series, ABS 100SG5 shows a lower melt mass-flow rate; therefore thin-wall parts with flow length-to-thickness ratios above 150:1 may require an increase in melt temperature within the 210°C to 240°C window, or an increase in injection velocity. In comparison with high-impact Toyolac grades such as the 700 series, 100SG5 has a lower notched impact response under ISO 179-1:2023 at 23°C and a higher bending modulus. The higher modulus is useful for rigid parts that must resist room-temperature creep, but the lower impact imposes a minimum wall thickness or larger radii at sharp corners. The material should not be used as a direct substitute for a high-impact ABS in applications with notched geometry and low-temperature impact requirements below −20°C unless the part is validated by instrumented impact testing under ISO 6603-2:2023.

Compared with glass-fibre-reinforced ABS, 100SG5 avoids fibre-related anisotropic shrinkage and surface roughness. The unfilled grade has lower tensile strength and lower heat distortion temperature than a glass-fibre-reinforced ABS, and it is not suitable for structural brackets where continuous service temperature exceeds 80°C under load. Compared with a PC/ABS blend, 100SG5 has a lower Vicat softening temperature and lower low-temperature notched impact, but it provides more predictable paint adhesion and easier processing at lower barrel-temperature settings. Paint adhesion for 100SG5 is most predictable when waterborne primers or ABS-specific solvent systems are used. Solvent-based paints containing ketones, esters, or chlorinated hydrocarbons can induce environmental stress cracking; adhesion and stress-cracking behaviour should be evaluated under ISO 22088-2:2006 or an equivalent constant-strain test.

Gate design for 100SG5 follows general ABS practice. Edge gates and submarine gates are used for housings; tab gates are used for thick sections; film gates are used for large cosmetic surfaces. Gate land length is kept at 0.5 to 1.0 mm. Gate thickness is set to 50% to 70% of the part wall thickness; below this range, the gate can freeze before holding pressure packs the cavity, causing sink marks. Above this range, cycle time lengthens and gate blush becomes visible. For parts with wall thickness below 1.5 mm, multiple gates or sequential valve gates are used to balance flow and reduce weld-line depth. Weld-line strength in ABS 100SG5 is sensitive to mould temperature; increasing mould temperature from 30°C to 60°C improves knit-line impact but can increase cycle time by 20% to 35% in deep-draw parts. Venting at the weld line is mandatory; trapped air at the melt front creates a V-notch that reduces weld-line impact under ISO 179-1:2023.

Mould shrinkage for unfilled ABS is typically 0.4% to 0.7% parallel to flow and 0.5% to 0.8% perpendicular to flow, measured on 60 mm × 60 mm × 2 mm plaques. The actual value is affected by mould temperature, holding pressure, gate freeze, and part thickness. Post-moulding dimensional stabilisation can be accelerated by annealing at 75°C to 85°C for 2 to 4 hours; this relaxes orientation stress and reduces subsequent dimensional movement in service.

Before production release, mould-filling simulation for ABS 100SG5 should use shear-rate-dependent viscosity data generated by capillary rheometry under ISO 11443:2021 and pvT data under ISO 17744:2004. Simulation alone does not remove the need for short-shot studies on the injection moulding machine. Short-shot progression is recorded from 70% to 100% fill in 5% increments to verify gate freeze, weld-line location, and air-trap position. Cavity pressure sensors are placed near the gate and at the last point to fill; a pressure drop greater than 20 MPa between these positions indicates filling resistance that may require a gate or vent change.

Common production failures with ABS 100SG5 include silver streaking, gloss banding, and short shots. Silver streaking is usually caused by moisture above 0.05% or by degraded material in the hot runner. Gloss banding is traced to mould temperature differences above 10°C or to holding-pressure termination before gate freeze. Short shots in thin sections occur when the melt front freezes before filling; adjustments are made within the established processing window rather than by raising melt temperature above 250°C.

Comparative Positioning Within the Toyolac ABS Grade Family

The Toyolac ABS portfolio separates grades by impact class, flow class, heat resistance, and surface aesthetic. ABS 100SG5 sits in the general-purpose surface-gloss segment where melt-flow control and part appearance are more important than maximum impact. The following table provides grade-family positioning for injection-moulding materials; quantitative comparisons require the specific lot datasheets for the exact grade and colour.

The principal differentiation of 100SG5 from a standard 100-series grade is the controlled melt-flow suffix and the surface-gloss designation. Production lots with higher moisture or wider mould-temperature spread can lose the gloss advantage and widen b-value colour shift. Colour change should be performed with purge compound; purge temperatures should not exceed 250°C.

Regulatory compliance for Toray Industries ABS 100SG5 is documented in the supplier safety data sheet. REACH registration under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and RoHS recast compliance under Directive 2011/65/EU should be confirmed for the specific production lot because additive packages and colour concentrates can change the declarable substance profile. The base ABS resin is typically supplied in natural, black, or custom-matched colours. Custom colour batches may contain inorganic pigments that alter melt-flow and impact properties; the lot certificate of analysis must be checked after colouring because pigment dispersion under high shear can affect notched impact more than tensile yield.

Incoming resin should be sampled for moisture, melt mass-flow rate, and apparent density. Moisture is determined by ISO 15512:2019 or an equivalent Karl Fischer method. Apparent density is measured under ISO 60:1977; variation in pellet bulk density beyond the supplier control band can indicate regrind content or pellet dimension change. Regrind use is limited to 20% by weight for appearance-critical parts. Repeated regrind cycles raise the yellowness index and reduce notched impact because the polybutadiene phase accumulates thermal history. No food-contact, medical, or potable-water claim is made for 100SG5 within this document.
