Toray Industries Toyolac ABS 100G-30 is a glass-fiber-reinforced acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene molding compound identified under ISO 1043-1:2011 as ABS-GF30. The compound contains a nominal 30 wt% silane-sized short glass fiber distributed within a styrene-acrylonitrile continuous phase containing dispersed polybutadiene domains. The glass fiber increases tensile stiffness, flexural modulus, heat deflection temperature, and dimensional stability relative to unfilled Toyolac 100, while reducing notched impact toughness and melt flow length. Manufacturer technical literature places the solid density between 1.27 g/cm³ and 1.29 g/cm³ per ISO 1183-1:2019. The product is supplied as cylindrical pellets for injection molding and, with hardened screw components, for extrusion-compression conversion.

The tabulated values are derived from injection-molded plaques in which fiber orientation is predominantly flow-directional. The mechanical response is anisotropic: transverse-to-flow flexural modulus is typically 35% to 50% lower than longitudinal flexural modulus. Differential shrinkage between flow and transverse directions can produce warpage in flat components exceeding 200 mm in major axis, so mold designs must employ balanced gating, ribs, and appropriate cooling-channel layout. After plastication, the number-average fiber length is reduced from chopped strand feed length of approximately 4.0 mm to 0.2 mm to 0.5 mm by screw shear, which directly affects reinforcement efficiency. Weld-line tensile strength retention in this glass-reinforced grade is typically 40% to 60% of the unwelded parent value; gates should be positioned to prevent knit lines in load-bearing regions. Published fatigue data for this specific compound under fully reversed bending are limited, and design validation should use S-N data generated per ASTM D7774-22 on end-use geometry.
On a production-scale 1,600 kN toggle clamping unit with a general-purpose three-zone screw, stable conversion is achieved when melt temperature at the nozzle is maintained between 230 °C and 260 °C. Cylinder set points are typically 220 °C at the feed zone, 240 °C in the compression zone, and 250 °C in the metering zone. A mold temperature of 60 °C to 80 °C is specified to balance filling, surface formation, and part ejection. Desiccant drying at 80 °C for 3 h to 4 h is required to reach residual moisture below 0.02 wt% because the silane sizing on the glass fiber is hygroscopic; moisture above 0.05 wt% produces gate-area splay and reduces interfacial adhesion through sizing hydrolysis.
The melt is more viscous than unfilled Toyolac 100 at equivalent shear rates, and the glass fiber is abrasive. Hardened bimetallic barrel liners, a hard-coated screw tip, and a hardened shut-off nozzle are recommended to control wear. Back pressure should be limited to 0.3 MPa to 0.5 MPa; higher back pressure accelerates fiber attrition and increases melt temperature non-uniformity. Screw surface speed is normally held at 0.15 m/s to 0.30 m/s. Holding pressure between 50 MPa and 80 MPa is applied through a timer-controlled gate seal; premature gate freeze-off causes sink marks and anisotropic density variation. Screw decompression after recovery of 2 mm to 5 mm prevents drool at the nozzle. Minimum edge-gate diameter is 1.5 mm for nominal wall sections of 2.0 mm to 3.0 mm. Smaller gates generate excessive shear heating, fiber orientation gradients, and surface delamination near the gate.
Melt residence time must be controlled. Extended residence above 270 °C degrades the polybutadiene phase, producing yellowing, reduced impact strength, and styrenic odor. In hot-runner systems, thermally insulated nozzle tips and internally heated manifolds are preferred to minimize dead zones. Mold venting depth of 0.02 mm to 0.03 mm is sufficient for ABS-GF30; insufficient venting leads to diesel-effect burn marks at end-of-fill locations. Cooling time for a 3 mm nominal wall is typically 20 s to 30 s at a mold temperature of 70 °C, with ejection temperature below 85 °C to avoid deformation of flat parts. Regrind use should not exceed 20 wt% in load-bearing parts unless property retention is verified by tensile and impact testing per ISO 527-2:2012 and ASTM D256-10.
Toyolac ABS 100G-30 is specified for injection-molded structural brackets, office automation chassis, electrical installation frames, and pump housings in which continuous static load at 60 °C to 80 °C must not produce excessive creep strain. The higher flexural modulus relative to unfilled Toyolac 100 permits wallstock reduction of 15% to 25% in rib-reinforced designs at equal bending stiffness. The compound is also used as a lighter replacement for zinc die-cast brackets and small aluminum housings, reducing component density from approximately 2.7 g/cm³ to 1.28 g/cm³ and eliminating secondary machining. However, the notched Izod impact range of 5 kJ/m² to 8 kJ/m² is significantly lower than the 18 kJ/m² to 25 kJ/m² range of unfilled Toyolac 100, and glass-reinforced ABS is generally not recommended for high-rate impact service below −10 °C. Bosses, snap-fits, and living hinges must incorporate minimum corner radii of 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm; sharp internal corners function as brittle fracture initiation sites in glass-reinforced ABS.
Compared with PC/ABS blends, Toyolac ABS 100G-30 provides higher flexural modulus and lower density but lower low-temperature ductility and multiaxial impact resistance. PC/ABS notched Izod at −30 °C can exceed 15 kJ/m², whereas the glass-reinforced ABS grade is not assigned to that service window without part-specific validation. The grade also differs from unfilled Toyolac 100 in mold shrinkage anisotropy and warpage control: unreinforced ABS exhibits more isotropic shrinkage but greater absolute shrinkage, while ABS-GF30 requires stricter gate-balance and cooling-line symmetry to maintain flatness. Part geometry with ribs, deep bosses, and abrupt wall-thickness transitions should be reviewed by mold-filling simulation using fiber orientation tensors; the flow-length ratio is lower than unfilled ABS, and short shots occur if the minimum hydraulic pressure or gate diameter is not maintained.
Chemical compatibility must be confirmed for the intended service environment. Prolonged contact with ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated solvents can induce environmental stress cracking in molded parts with high residual stress. If external chemical contact is unavoidable, compatibility testing per ISO 22088-1:2006 or equivalent is required. The grade should not be exposed to steam sterilization or continuous hot-water immersion above 60 °C unless property retention is validated, because glass sizing can hydrolyze and reduce interfacial adhesion over extended exposure. No UL 94 classification statement is made for Toyolac ABS 100G-30 without a current supplier-issued UL Yellow Card. REACH and RoHS compliance should be confirmed through the manufacturer’s current product documentation rather than inferred from similar grades.
