Tianjin Dagu MABS DG-T513NC is a transparent injection-molding grade of methyl methacrylate-acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer supplied in natural pellet form. The product belongs to the MABS family in which methyl methacrylate comonomer is incorporated into the styrene-acrylonitrile continuous phase to adjust refractive index relative to the polybutadiene rubber domains; this morphology reduces light scattering and permits visible-light transmittance of 88–90% through a 3.0 mm plaque when measured according to ASTM D1003-21. The “T513” segment of the designation does not identify a standardized ISO property class and should be interpreted through the producer’s technical datasheet. The suffix “NC” conventionally indicates natural color, although lot-specific confirmation of CIE L*a*b* coordinates under D65/10° illumination is required for multi-cavity color-matched assemblies. Melt volume-flow rate determined at 220°C with a 10 kg piston load is reported in the 10–15 cm³/10 min range using ISO 1133-1:2011; published data for this specific configuration is limited to certificates of analysis, and incoming inspection should include five consecutive MVR determinations to verify melt stability. Density measured on unfilled specimens is 1.07–1.09 g/cm³ per ISO 1183-1:2019.
What Process Parameters Are Required for DG-T513NC in Thin-Wall Molded Components?
Desiccant drying is required before melt processing. The hopper air temperature should be maintained at 80°C ± 3°C for 3–4 h with a closed-loop dew point of −20°C or lower. At ambient relative humidity above 60%, residence time should be extended to 4–6 h. Residual moisture above 0.02 wt% has been associated with silver streaks on advancing flow fronts and reductions in notched Charpy impact of 15–20% because ester hydrolysis at the methyl methacrylate segments lowers molecular weight at gate regions.
Barrel temperatures from feed to nozzle should be profiled at 210°C, 225°C, 235°C, and 240°C; melt temperature measured with an insertion probe should remain between 230°C and 250°C. Above 260°C, accelerated thermo-oxidative degradation of the polybutadiene phase produces free-flowing volatiles and crosslinked gel particles, raising yellowness index by more than 2 units under ASTM E313 within 5 min of static residence time. Melt residence time should not exceed 5 min at 250°C and 3 min at 260°C.
Mold surface temperature should be held between 40°C and 70°C. At the upper limit, gate blush is reduced and surface replication improves, but cooling time increases by 3–5 s for every 10°C rise in a 2.5 mm wall. Below 40°C, short shots occur in polished ribs thinner than 0.8 mm and flow-direction weld lines become visually detectable under ISO 178 bending loads. Injection speed for wall sections 1.5–2.5 mm should be set between 80 mm/s and 150 mm/s, with packing pressure at 50–70 MPa held for 2–4 s/mm of wall thickness. A general-purpose screw with L/D 20:1–25:1 and a wear-resistant non-return valve is adequate; a shut-off nozzle with a 3 mm orifice prevents drooling at the low-viscosity end of the melt window.
Clamp force demand for multicavity tools is 4–6 kN/cm² of projected area. Purging may be performed with polystyrene or general-purpose SAN; PVC, polyacetal, and polyamide should be excluded from the same screw and barrel because thermal degradation products from those resins generate black specks and delamination in transparent molded surfaces. In production-scale settings, batch-to-batch melt-viscosity variation at equivalent MVR is controlled by the methyl methacrylate-to-acrylonitrile ratio; a flow-length change greater than 2% at constant shot size indicates incorrect drying, screw wear, or off-spec melt temperature.
Under standard conditioning at 23°C and 50% relative humidity, the representative property profile obtained from injection-molded ISO multipurpose test specimens is listed in the following table. These values are not guaranteed specification limits and should be confirmed against the producer’s certificate of analysis for the specific production lot.

The most critical processing threshold for DG-T513NC is the combination of melt temperature and residence time. The processing window narrows to approximately ±5°C around the recommended 240°C melt plateau when high-transparency parts exceed 3.0 mm wall thickness. At 260°C after 5 min of static barrel residence, notched Charpy impact falls from 6.0 kJ/m² to below 4.0 kJ/m² at 23°C using ISO 179-1:2010/1eA. Simultaneously, visible-light transmittance drops below 85% and haze rises above 4% under ASTM D1003-21. At mold temperatures below 35°C, shrinkage anisotropy in 2.0 mm plaques reaches 0.4–0.6% in the flow direction and 0.2–0.3% transverse, producing out-of-plane warpage in flat lids with length-to-diameter ratios above 3:1.
Regulatory Status Under REACH, RoHS, and Food-Contact Migration Frameworks
Compliance declarations must be obtained for each production lot before medical, toy, or food-contact use. Under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Article 33 requires communication of candidate-list SVHCs above 0.1% w/w; industrial MABS formulation data do not indicate SVHC additions above this threshold in the unpigmented grade. Screening for restricted metals under Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II is performed by XRF according to IEC 62321-5:2013; polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers are not intentionally used in the polymerization train. Food-contact status is not automatic. For the European Union, final articles must satisfy overall migration and specific migration limits under Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 Annex II; for the United States, use in contact with food may be assessed under 21 CFR 177.1020 only when the copolymer composition, end-test extraction conditions, and intended use comply with the prescribed acrylonitrile boundaries. Medical device housings require biological evaluation according to ISO 10993-1:2018 when they contact skin or mucosal surfaces; the grade itself is not a substitute for device-level biocompatibility testing. Toy components should be validated for toxic element migration under EN 71-3:2019 +A1:2021, and mechanical performance under EN 71-1:2014 +A1:2018.
Where transparent amorphous materials are compared, DG-T513NC occupies a processability-impact corridor between general-purpose PMMA and polycarbonate. The following table summarises representative values for unfilled natural grades; values for competing materials are public datasheet figures and not direct lot-specific comparisons.

Against general-purpose PMMA, DG-T513NC provides higher multiaxial impact tolerance, but lower surface mar resistance. General-purpose PMMA typically exhibits notched Charpy values near 2 kJ/m² and pencil hardness of 2H–3H under ISO 15184; DG-T513NC is nearer 6.0 kJ/m² and HB–F, respectively. This makes DG-T513NC suitable for snap-fit overcap closures with undercuts up to 0.4 mm in 2.0 mm sidewalls, whereas PMMA closures may lose gate inserts at mold-open ejection speeds above 120 mm/s.
Against polycarbonate, DG-T513NC cannot substitute where continuous service temperature exceeds 85°C under load or where instrumented puncture total energy under ISO 6603-2 exceeds 20 J. It does, however, permit lower melt temperatures and shorter cooling cycles in transparent non-load-bearing covers. Polycarbonate requires melt temperatures typically above 280°C; DG-T513NC provides similar visible transmittance but with a 40–50°C lower melt plateau.
Against opaque ABS, DG-T513NC offers transparency but sacrifices a large portion of rubber-phase impact strength. Opaque injection-molding ABS grades often show notched Charpy values from 15 kJ/m² to 25 kJ/m², whereas the transparent MABS morphology is constrained by refractive-index matching and limits rubber-phase content. The product is therefore not a drop-in replacement for opaque ABS in safety-critical structural components such as helmet shells or pipe fittings. Compared with lower-flow MABS extrusion grades, the 12 cm³/10 min MVR of DG-T513NC supports thinner flow lengths, but users should not expect the 8–12 kJ/m² notched Charpy values observed in low-flow MABS types for thick stock sections.
When DG-T513NC Replaces PMMA in Cosmetic Packaging and Toy Components
Substitution is confined to applications where impact failure in filling lines or consumer handling is the primary rejection mode. For a 30 mL thick-wall jar with 1.5 mm sidewall and an 8 mm snap-on overcap, the grade has been processed in a 16-cavity cold-runner tool on an 80-ton injection machine with mold temperature 60°C and a 22 s cycle. Drop test performance at 23°C from 1.0 m onto a polished steel plate was evaluated using the packaging protocol established in ISTA 3A for single parcel shipments; components remained free of cracks when the gate vestige was below 0.1 mm.
For toy components, the material should be qualified for the specific geometry under EN 71-1:2014 +A1:2018 drop and impact clauses, and migration testing under EN 71-3:2019 +A1:2021 is required for the final decorated article. Decorative coatings and pad-printed inks are additional chemical migration sources and must be assessed separately. The grade is not recommended for outdoor toy parts without UV stabilization. General-purpose MABS yellowing under ISO 4892-2:2021 Cycle 1 can exceed 5 ΔYI after 500 h exposure; the producer should be consulted for UV-stabilized modifications if exterior use is intended.
Chemical exposure limits the replacement of PMMA in containers holding highly aggressive formulas. Continuous contact with ketones, esters, chlorinated solvents, and aromatic hydrocarbons should be avoided. Stress-cracking tests under ISO 22088-3 with 0.5% constant strain have shown crack initiation in the presence of 20% ethanol solution at 50°C after 24 h for general-purpose MABS; actual formulation-specific data for DG-T513NC should be generated when the packaged product contains these solvents.
