    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Tianjin Dagu Chemical ABS DG-417KF is a medium-impact injection-molding acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin supplied as cylindrical pellets with a nominal diameter of 3.0 mm to 3.5 mm and a bulk density near 0.55 g/cm³. The KF designation in the manufacturer’s product range identifies a modified lubricant and stabilizer system intended for faster plastication and more uniform pellet metering in high-speed machinery; it is not a flame-retardant grade. Published third-party data for the KF variant remain limited, and the technical description below combines manufacturer certificate-of-analysis ranges with processing behavior of the surrounding Dagu medium-flow ABS series.

DG-417KF is positioned between DG-417 and DG-417K in the Dagu injection-molding ABS portfolio. In manufacturer literature, plain DG-417 has lower melt flow and slightly greater room-temperature ductility; the K-modified grade has higher flow for thin-wall molding but may show reduced low-temperature impact. The KF variant is reported to combine the higher flow of the K package with a narrower pellet-size distribution and lower fines content, which reduces hopper bridging and gravimetric feeder variability. Quantitative comparative data are not published in full, so incoming lot testing against the specific tool is required before changing from DG-417 or DG-417K.

What Drying and Injection Molding Conditions Prevent Polybutadiene Degradation?

Pre-drying in a desiccant hopper dryer at 80 °C to 90 °C for 2 h to 4 h is recommended. Target residual moisture is below 0.05 % by weight; if ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %, the resin should be transferred directly from sealed containers to a closed-loop hopper dryer and exposed to ambient air for no more than 15 min. Melt temperature measured at the machine nozzle should be maintained between 210 °C and 240 °C. Barrel set points in a three-zone reciprocating screw are typically rear 190 °C, center 210 °C, front 225 °C, and nozzle 235 °C. Mold temperature should be controlled between 40 °C and 70 °C; lower mold temperatures reduce cycle time but produce higher molded-in orientation and more gloss variation on textured surfaces.

Screw geometry should provide an L/D ratio of 18:1 to 22:1 and compression ratio of 2.2:1 to 2.6:1. A melt decompression setting of 2 mm to 4 mm prevents drooling, while back pressure should be kept between 0.5 MPa and 1.5 MPa. Back pressure above 1.5 MPa can raise melt temperature into the 250 °C to 260 °C region where the polybutadiene phase begins to degrade and notched Izod impact retention falls. Hot-runner systems processing DG-417KF should be heated with manifold set points from 230 °C to 240 °C and tips at 240 °C to 245 °C. Residence time in the hot runner should not exceed 5 min; longer residence times at 245 °C can cause visible yellow streaks in transparent or light-colored parts.

Rheologically, DG-417KF is shear-thinning. At 220 °C, apparent viscosity falls from roughly 800 Pa·s to 1,200 Pa·s at 100 s⁻¹ to 80 Pa·s to 150 Pa·s at 1,000 s⁻¹. These values are not specification limits but are typical of medium-flow ABS with a polybutadiene domain diameter below 1.0 µm. The melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C/10 kg is commonly reported in the range 18 cm³/10 min to 22 cm³/10 min; incoming lot acceptance should include melt volume-flow rate, residual moisture, and pellet-size distribution.

    Mechanical and Thermal Property Benchmarks

The following lot-average ranges are compiled from typical Dagu medium-impact ABS data and are not guaranteed minimum values. The certificate of analysis for each production lot remains the controlling specification.

Post-mold shrinkage is anisotropic; parallel-to-flow linear shrinkage over 24 h at 23 °C ± 2 °C and 50 % ± 5 % relative humidity commonly falls between 0.4 % and 0.6 %, while transverse shrinkage is typically 0.5 % to 0.7 %. For parts with gate-to-flow-end length exceeding 150 mm, differential shrinkage can produce measured flatness deviation above 0.5 mm unless mold cooling is balanced to maintain cavity-wall temperature difference below 5 °C. Clamp force requirements are influenced by projected area and wall thickness. As a starting estimate, 0.35 kN/mm² to 0.50 kN/mm² of projected cavity area is typical for ABS with melt temperature 220 °C to 230 °C and hot-runner manifold temperatures of 230 °C to 240 °C. Multi-cavity electrical enclosure tools with projected area of 300 cm² therefore require clamp force in the 1,050 kN to 1,500 kN range.

When DG-417KF Replaces a Lower-Flow ABS in Thin-Wall Business Machine Housings

Changing from a lower-flow ABS to DG-417KF in thin-wall business machine housings alters the filling-pressure curve and the gate-freeze time. In plant-scale evaluations of medium-flow ABS grades, a 180 t hydraulic injection molding machine with a 24 mm screw diameter and L/D ratio 20:1 could fill a 1.8 mm nominal wall thickness plaque at 225 °C melt temperature and 50 °C mold temperature with a peak hydraulic pressure below 80 MPa. However, when the edge gate was reduced below 1.0 mm, flow hesitation caused surface flow marks at the gate transition; gate widths of 1.2 mm to 1.5 mm and a short land length of 0.8 mm to 1.0 mm prevented the defect. The grade’s external lubricant package reduces screw torque, but venting depth should not exceed 0.025 mm to avoid flash because the lower-viscosity melt front penetrates small vent channels.

Regrind addition up to 30 wt% is tolerated, but each pass reduces low-temperature impact and shifts the yellowness index. At 30 wt% regrind from sprues and runners, the −30 °C notched Izod impact can fall below 12 kJ/m²; for unpainted automotive interior parts, regrind should be limited to 15 wt%. The vented screw recovery speed should be reduced when regrind percentage exceeds 20 wt% because non-uniform particle size increases plasticating pressure fluctuations and can destabilize shot weight.

Compared with high-gloss ABS grades, DG-417KF produces an as-molded surface with lower specular gloss but better adhesion readiness for solvent-borne coating and polyurethane adhesives. Surface polarity after flame or plasma treatment can be raised to a wetting tension above 38 mN/m; untreated as-molded surfaces typically measure 34 mN/m to 36 mN/m. Painting lines using two-component acrylic topcoats at 80 °C for 30 min have achieved cross-hatch adhesion ratings of 0 to 1 under ISO 2409. This behavior follows the general response of medium-flow ABS with a stabilized polybutadiene phase and is not exclusive to DG-417KF.

At the pellet level, the manufacturer declares conformity to REACH and RoHS. Residual acrylonitrile and styrene monomers are monitored by gas chromatography; specifications are batch-specific and the certificate of analysis should be requested for threshold values. The grade is not assigned a broad food-contact clearance under FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 in the available technical literature; direct food-contact use should be rejected unless article-specific migration testing under EU 10/2011/EC and FDA 21 CFR is completed.

Thermal stabilizer chemistry in DG-417KF is based on hindered phenolic antioxidants; amine-based antistatic additives and certain secondary aromatic amines should not be compounded without thermal aging trials because interactions can accelerate yellowing at melt temperatures above 240 °C. Copper-stearate lubricant packages and some flame-retardant synergists can likewise reduce polybutadiene phase stability at the 250 °C upper limit. Dry-blending with color concentrates is permitted, but the carrier resin should be ABS or styrene-rich SAN with a melt-flow rate within ±5 cm³/10 min of the base resin to avoid visible streak defects in unpainted parts.
