Tianjin Dagu Chemical ABS DG-307P is a pelletized acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer intended for injection-molded components that receive post-molding electroplating. The “P” suffix identifies the grade as a plating-oriented material within the Dagu ABS range rather than a general-purpose injection grade. Supplier typical lot data place melt flow rate at 17 g/10 min when measured under ASTM D1238 at 220 °C with a 10.0 kg piston load. Typical density is 1.04 g/cm³ per ASTM D792. The resin is supplied in pellet form, and lot-level certificates of analysis govern actual rheology, mechanical strength, and etch performance. DG-307P is formulated to generate uniform chemical-etch microporosity after chromic acid conditioning while retaining sufficient fluidity for thin-wall injection.
Mechanical and thermal values determined on injection-molded specimens include tensile strength at yield of 43 MPa at a crosshead speed of 50 mm/min per ASTM D638, flexural modulus of 2200 MPa per ASTM D790, and notched Izod impact of 190 J/m at 23 °C per ASTM D256. A Vicat softening temperature of approximately 97 °C is measured under 1 kg load per ASTM D1525; heat deflection temperature at 1.82 MPa is approximately 84 °C per ASTM D648. Mold shrinkage determined on a 150 × 150 × 3 mm plaque is typically 0.4–0.6% per ASTM D955. These values are typical lot results, not specification limits.

Relative to the general-purpose Dagu DG-417 injection grade, DG-307P differs by a combination of higher flow, controlled rubber-phase architecture, and lot-consistent etching behavior. Under ASTM D1238 at 220 °C/10.0 kg, DG-307P is typically reported around 17 g/10 min, while DG-417 lot averages are often nearer 15 g/10 min. The higher flow assists shorter fill paths and lower cavity-pressure requirements in thin-wall parts. The trade-off is a lower notched Izod impact value, typically 190 J/m at 23 °C for DG-307P compared with around 210 J/m for DG-417 under ASTM D256. These are typical industrial values and should be confirmed with the relevant certificate of analysis.
In electroplating, DG-307P is specified for chromic-sulfuric acid etching at 60–70 °C for 5–15 min. The grade is formulated so that the etch removes butadiene rubber domains and creates a high density of mechanical anchor sites for electroless nickel or copper. General-purpose ABS resins may etch unevenly under the same line conditions and can give lower peel adhesion after metallization. Industrial plating specifications commonly require a minimum peel adhesion of 0.8 kgf/cm (7.8 N/cm) when tested according to ASTM B533. Published direct comparative adhesion data between DG-307P and DG-417 is limited; however, the differentiation is primarily in etch uniformity and plate adhesion rather than in tensile or flexural values alone.
The exact rubber particle size distribution and graft ratio are proprietary and therefore not published in routine technical literature. The grade is not marketed as a flame-retardant ABS, a high-heat ABS, a glass-filled ABS, or a food-contact certified material. Users requiring those performance classes should select a different product. When maximum room-temperature impact without plating is the primary requirement, DG-417 or an impact-modified general-purpose ABS may be more suitable than DG-307P because the plating-oriented morphology of DG-307P typically reduces bulk toughness relative to the highest-impact ABS grades.
Before melt processing, DG-307P must be dried to below 0.05 wt% residual moisture. Desiccant dryers at 80 °C ± 5 °C for 2–4 h are typical. Ambient hopper dryers may fail in production areas above 60% RH. Production-scale processing is performed on reciprocating-screw injection molding machines with L/D ratios of 20:1 to 24:1 and compression ratios of 2.5:1 to 3.0:1. Nozzle melt temperature is maintained between 210 °C and 240 °C, while mold temperature is held between 40 °C and 80 °C. Mold temperatures below 40 °C may produce visible flow lines and poor surface replication after electroplating; temperatures above 80 °C extend cycle time without a proportionally documented gain in adhesion. Injection pressure typically ranges from 70–120 MPa depending on gate geometry and flow path. Back pressure of 0.5–1.5 MPa and low-to-moderate screw surface speeds are used to avoid excessive frictional heating. On a multi-cavity automotive trim tool with a projected area of approximately 0.25 m², production-line clamp force calculations often specify machines at or above 2,500 kN, but cavity-pressure validation is required for each tool.
Thermal stability boundaries for DG-307P are consistent with low-viscosity ABS plating grades. At melt temperatures above 250 °C or residence times beyond 5 min, the butadiene phase may undergo thermal oxidation and the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix can generate volatile low-molecular-weight compounds. These species can migrate to the part surface during filling, creating a weak boundary layer that interferes with chromic acid etching and lowers peel adhesion. Production-scale defects traced to excessive barrel set temperatures have appeared as plate peel, etch clouding, and color drift after electroplating. Barrel temperature profiles should therefore keep the maximum melt exit temperature at or below 240 °C and minimize hold-up in hot-runner drops and valve-gate nozzles.
Resin moisture is a second boundary condition. At ambient humidity above 60% RH, pellets can pick up surface moisture, and processing wet material produces splay, voiding, and surface hydrolysis products. These defects reduce the consistency of catalyst adsorption during the electroless nickel or copper step. The resin should not be mixed with incompatible engineering polymers such as polyamide or polycarbonate residues in the hopper or screw because segregation and interfacial delamination can occur. Purge procedures using a compatible ABS or commercial purging compound should be followed before switching from other polymers.
In rheological terms, DG-307P behaves as a pseudoplastic ABS melt. Melt viscosity decreases with shear rate; gate geometry and injection speed should therefore be selected to generate shear rates typical of thin-wall ABS, generally in the range of 10²–10⁴ s⁻¹ depending on gate diameter and fill time. Hot-runner temperature should be kept between 220 °C and 240 °C. Holding pressure is adjusted to maintain a cushion of 2–5 mm and to limit sink marks. Processors should monitor cushion stability across shots because fluctuations above 1 mm can alter packing pressure and weld-line integrity, which may become visible after electroplating.
Electroplating on DG-307P is normally performed by cleaning, conditioning, chromic acid etching, neutralization, activation, electroless nickel or copper, strike copper, acid copper, semi-bright nickel, bright nickel, and chromium flash. Chromic acid etching baths for ABS electroplating typically contain chromic acid at 350–400 g/L and sulfuric acid at 350–400 g/L, operated at 60–70 °C for 5–15 min. The exact immersion time depends on the part’s surface area-to-volume ratio and bath age. Overetching can expose stylus-visible pits that cannot be concealed by bright nickel or chromium. Underetched parts may fail thermal-cycle adhesion even if initial peel values appear acceptable. After metallization, peel adhesion is tested according to ASTM B533 or the equivalent ISO method. The minimum adhesion target for electroplated ABS in many automotive trim and plumbing applications is 0.8 kgf/cm (7.8 N/cm). Some OEM thermal-cycle specifications require higher values after humidity aging and temperature cycling; published data for DG-307P under every proprietary OEM cycle is limited, so end-user validation is required on the intended tool.
Lot-to-lot consistency is a major consideration for electroplating ABS. Melt flow index, rubber content, and ash content are typically reported in supplier certificates. A shift in melt flow index of more than 1–2 g/10 min under ASTM D1238 may indicate a change in molecular weight distribution and can alter filling behavior on multi-cavity tools. A shift in rubber-phase grafting can change the etch rate even if bulk mechanical values remain within limits. For critical automotive trim, incoming lot validation should include a small production run and plate adhesion testing, not solely resin property tables.
Part design for DG-307P should follow ABS electroplating rules. Wall sections should be as uniform as possible, with thickness transitions not exceeding 25% to reduce sink and stress concentration. Gate locations should avoid direct evidence on Class A surfaces because gate vestiges and weld lines remain visible after chromium deposition. Weld lines in electroplated ABS can appear as linear plate adhesion weaknesses; placing gates to minimize weld lines near load-bearing or visible surfaces is mandatory. Venting must be sufficient to avoid gas burns and surface porosity that become obvious after metallization. Texturing should account for the additional thickness of flash chrome and bright nickel layers, typically 10–30 μm total plated thickness depending on application.
For regulatory documentation, processors of DG-307P typically obtain RoHS and REACH declarations from the resin supplier. The RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU restricts lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE in homogeneous materials. The supplier declaration covers the pellet; final plated article compliance must also include plating-bath additives and chromium finishes. Under REACH EC 1907/2006, substances of very high concern above 0.1 wt% require communication in articles. For food-contact use, verification against 21 CFR 177.1020 and end-use migration testing are required; DG-307P is not inherently food-contact certified. For melt-flow certification, users should request lot-level test reports in accordance with ASTM D1238 or ISO 1133-1:2022, and mechanical lot testing should be performed under ASTM D638, ASTM D790, and ASTM D256.
