In automotive exterior trim programmes where paint-line elimination is documented as a piece-cost reduction measure, a melt-compounded material derived from Techno-UMG DIALAC ASA S311 is pre-dried at 80 °C for 3 h to 4 h in a closed-loop desiccant dryer until residual moisture falls below 0.05 %. The melt volume-flow rate should be confirmed against the lot certificate under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C and 10 kg. The granulate is fed to a reciprocating-screw injection moulding machine with a screw L/D of 20:1 to 22:1 and a compression ratio of 2.2:1 to 2.6:1. Barrel temperatures are set from feed zone to nozzle at 210 °C, 220 °C, 230 °C, and 235 °C. Mould temperature is maintained at 50 °C to 70 °C. Holding pressure is applied at 40 MPa to 70 MPa. Black exterior formulations contain carbon black at 1.0 wt% to 3.0 wt%, a high-molecular-weight hindered amine light stabilizer at 0.2 wt% to 0.8 wt%, and a benzotriazole UV absorber at 0.1 wt% to 0.5 wt%. Light-coloured parts replace carbon black with surface-treated rutile TiO₂ at 1 phr to 4 phr. Without the stabilizer package, accelerated weathering under ISO 4892-2 produces measurable carbonyl formation after 1500 h. After xenon-arc exposure at 0.35 W/m² at 340 nm with a black-panel temperature of 65 °C for 3000 h, surface chalking, colour shift, notched impact, and flexural strength are evaluated using ISO 179-1, ISO 178, and ISO 527-2. Components produced in this class include mirror housings, B-pillar appliqués, cowl vent grilles, and tailgate spoilers. The limiting processing defect is silver streaking caused by moisture hydrolysis when the dryer dew point rises above -30 °C during high-humidity production shifts.
Window profile lines that require a weatherable capstock over rigid PVC process DIALAC S311-based ASA through a separate 30 mm single-screw auxiliary extruder fitted with a barrier screw and melt pump. The PVC substrate is fused in a conical twin-screw main extruder. The ASA melt temperature at the die entry is held within a ±5 °C band around 225 °C to 235 °C. Above 250 °C, thermal degradation releases acetic acid odour and produces visible yellowing. Capstock thickness is controlled at 0.2 mm to 0.5 mm through the coextrusion feedblock and slot die. The melt bank above the calibrator must remain uniform. Edge tearing from low melt strength is corrected by adding an acrylic processing aid at 0.5 wt% to 1.5 wt%. Weatherable pigments are used because organic colorants fail in south-facing building profiles. For deep-brown and black profiles, carbon black is added at 1.0 wt% to 2.5 wt%. For white and pastel profiles, rutile TiO₂ is loaded at 8 phr to 12 phr to achieve hiding power and chalking resistance. Accelerated weathering is conducted under ISO 4892-2 with xenon-arc exposure for 8000 h. A colour change ΔE*ab below 3.0 and 70 % retention of Charpy notched impact under ISO 179-1/1eA are typical targets for building profiles. Profile dimensions are checked against EN 12608-1. Thermal expansion is assessed because the ASA capstock has a higher coefficient of linear thermal expansion than the underlying rigid PVC. Final products include window lineals, door sills, soffit panels, and fascia boards. The primary failure mode is delamination at the coextrusion interface when the PVC substrate skin temperature falls below 150 °C at the die exit. For line speeds above 3 m/min, feedback control on the melt pump and vacuum calibration at 0.06 MPa to 0.08 MPa are required to prevent dimensional drift.
| Process variable | Setpoint | Defect condition |
|---|---|---|
| ASA melt temperature at die entry | 225 °C to 235 °C, tolerance ±5 °C | Yellowing and acetic acid odour above 250 °C |
| Capstock thickness | 0.2 mm to 0.5 mm | Pinholing below 0.15 mm, delamination above 0.6 mm |
| PVC substrate skin temperature at die exit | ≥ 150 °C | Interfacial delamination |
| Calibration vacuum | 0.06 MPa to 0.08 MPa | Profile distortion or collapse |
| Line speed | 3 m/min to 6 m/min | Edge tearing or melt-bank instability |
When outdoor electrical cabinet housings are specified for direct sunlight exposure, the first design constraint is not UV retention alone but the interaction between moulded-in stress and sealing surfaces. Large enclosure components are moulded from S311-based ASA when the specification requires dimensional stability, low water absorption, and ultraviolet resistance. The granulate is dried to 0.05 % moisture and processed on a medium-clamp injection moulding machine. For a projected part area of 0.4 m², clamp force is maintained at 4 kN/cm² to 7 kN/cm² of projected area to prevent flash. Barrel temperatures are set at 225 °C to 240 °C, and the mould temperature is held at 60 °C to 80 °C to reduce moulded-in stress. Fan gates or tab gates are used with wall-thickness transitions of 2.5 mm to 4.0 mm. The non-flame-retardant outdoor formulation contains carbon black at 1.0 wt% to 2.5 wt%, a hindered amine light stabilizer at 0.3 wt% to 0.8 wt%, and a processing stabilizer at 0.1 wt% to 0.3 wt%. Where a UL 94 V-0 rating is imposed, 12 wt% to 18 wt% of phosphorus-based flame retardant may be added. The resulting melt viscosity increase can reduce flow length by 15 % to 25 %, and the notched impact value falls steeply above 18 wt%. Published data for this specific flame-retardant configuration is limited, so the lot-specific UL 94 file must be consulted. Outdoor suitability is evaluated under UL 746C F1, which combines xenon-arc weathering with water immersion before mechanical and dielectric tests. After 1000 h of xenon-arc aging under ISO 4892-2, the enclosure must show no cracks, no delamination, and no electrical tracking beyond the material’s comparative tracking index under IEC 60112. Enclosures are sealed with EPDM or polyurethane gaskets to reach IP65 under IEC 60529. Products include electricity meter boxes, telecom street cabinets, solar combiner box shells, and outdoor junction boxes.
| Qualification pathway | Test standard | Condition | Pass criterion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outdoor polymer suitability | UL 746C F1 | Xenon arc plus water immersion | No cracking after 1000 h |
| Accelerated weathering | ISO 4892-2 | 0.35 W/m², black-panel 65 °C | ΔE*ab < 3.0 |
| Ingress protection | IEC 60529 | Dust and water jets | IP65 |
| Comparative tracking index | IEC 60112 | 50 drops, 0.1 % NH₄Cl | CTI ≥ 600 V optional |
Marine deck hatches, shore-power inlet housings, and RV baggage doors are fabricated from S311-based ASA sheet that is compounded, extruded, and thermoformed. The sheet is produced on a vented single-screw extruder with 45 mm screw diameter and a slot die feeding a three-roll polishing stack. Sheet gauge is controlled at 2 mm to 6 mm. Melt temperature is held at 220 °C to 235 °C, and roll temperatures are set at 70 °C to 90 °C. After absorption drying at 80 °C for 4 h, the sheet is thermoformed at a surface temperature of 150 °C to 180 °C. Female aluminium tooling at 60 °C is used to control sag and wall thinning. Adhesive assembly uses two-part methyl methacrylate structural adhesives or polyurethane sealants after flame or plasma surface treatment. Salt-spray resistance is checked under ISO 9227 neutral salt spray for 500 h. No blisters or fibre-like corrosion are accepted. Weatherability is assessed under ISO 4892-3 with QUV-type exposure at 0.76 W/m² at 340 nm for 1500 h. The compounded sheet contains carbon black at 1.5 wt% to 2.5 wt% for black and dark grey parts. White marine sheet uses rutile TiO₂ at 8 phr to 10 phr plus a benzotriazole UV absorber at 0.3 phr to 0.6 phr. Low-temperature impact is tested under ISO 179-1/1eA at -30 °C. The operational boundary is that ASA S311 is not recommended for continuous immersion below the waterline or for direct contact with petrol, hydraulic oil, or strong solvents. Published data for this specific marine configuration is limited. End products include sailboat deck hatches, engine cover side panels, shore-power inlet housings, and RV baggage door frames.
For garden power equipment and riding-mower engine shrouds, the dominant requirement is resistance to sunlight, grass acids, and occasional fuel splatter without excessive part weight or paint. A textured injection mould is used to hide flow lines in the unfilled melt. The S311-based compound is dried at 80 °C for 3 h to 4 h and processed at a melt temperature of 230 °C to 245 °C with a mould temperature of 40 °C to 60 °C. Wall thickness is maintained at 2 mm to 3 mm. Carbon black is added at 1.0 wt% to 2.0 wt% for black and dark-green shrouds. A hindered amine light stabilizer is used at 0.5 wt% to 1.0 wt% because the parts remain outdoors during seasonal storage. Glass-fibre reinforcement is not used because it raises melt viscosity and reduces textured surface appearance. Impact testing is conducted under ISO 179-1/1eA at 23 °C and -20 °C. Flexural modulus is checked under ISO 178. Flammability is typically classified as UL 94 HB. Chemical exposure to commercial grass cleaner and two-stroke fuel splash is screened for 24 h at 23 °C, and stress cracking is visually rated against ISO 22088-3. The parts include brushcutter motor cowls, lawn-tractor dashboard carriers, blower fan housings, and snow-thrower chute bases.
Externally mounted channel-letter faces and backlit sign cabinet panels are routed from extruded ASA sheet because PVC edges discolour and acrylic is more brittle in thin sections. Sheet is extruded at 3 mm to 8 mm gauge with a colour concentrate containing UV-stable pigments. CNC routing uses a single-flute upcut bit at 18,000 rpm to 22,000 rpm and feed rate of 1.5 m/min to 3 m/min. Edge polishing is performed with a diamond bit or flame polishing at 160 °C to 180 °C surface temperature. Heat bending for sign returns is conducted at 140 °C to 160 °C. The UV package is based on a benzotriazole absorber at 0.2 wt% to 0.5 wt% and a hindered amine light stabilizer at 0.3 wt% to 0.7 wt%. Weathering is evaluated under ISO 4892-2 for 3000 h. Colour shift ΔE*ab must remain below 2.0 for white sign faces. The formed panels are assembled with MMA or polyurethane adhesives. LED module enclosures inside the sign are evaluated separately under their own UL 94 requirement. End products include channel letter returns, architectural fascia letter faces, transit shelter advertising frames, and directory sign backplates.
